How do I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

Hello,
I am currently running OS 10.5.8 and I would like to buy the Snow Leopard upgrade. How do I do this? I have looked around the apple online store and I cannot find anything about buying it. Any help would be great, thanks.

Your machine is likely too dated to run 10.8 at all , or if it does will run slow.
It won't run your PPC based software or hardware drives for external hardware.
10.6 will run your PPC software and likely is best for that machine performance speaking, Software Update to 10.6.8 and stay there.
You better do your research first.

How do I upgrade to snow leopard from leopard if I don't have the Mac App Store?

It has never been on the MAS. It's never been a download anywhere (except, maybe, as a pirated version on a torrent, which, along with being "free," will probably bring along some nice malware.)  It has always been a DVD, which may be possible to obtain by calling Apple and asking for Phone Sales. Should stlll only be $29.

I have OS X 10.5.8, how do I upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion?

As Ralph Landry1 mentions, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first (so you can access the App Store), but if your Mac qualifies, you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion without installing Lion first > Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

how do I upgrade my snow leopard to the latest version free of charge
    thank  you

10.6.8 update is the latest version of Snow Leopard. To check if you are running that, go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac and it should tell you.
If you want to upgrade to the latest version of OS X (Mavericks, 10.9.1 - free) you can select the App Store from the Apple menu and download it.
However, ensure your Mac meets the tech specs: https://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ and be aware that although the specs say 2gb or RAM is required, real-world use seems to indicate that 4gb is a realistic minimum.
Also many older apps will not longer work in Mavericks and PowerPC apps will not run because Rosetta, which enabled the ability, is no longer supported/available.
Check out this compatibility list to prepare your self for possibly having to upgrade or replace apps that you may a rely on in your work flow.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps
The Mavericks installer is a 5.3gb download - you may want to make a copy of it before running it - could save another large download in the future if you ever needed to re-install.
Ensure you have reliable backup you can restore from before embarking on the upgrade.

How do I upgrade to snow leopard (from leopard 10.5) and then restore my files from my time machine HDD backup...without losing any data or reinstalling leopard (10.5)?

Hello, it's great you have a backup, but 10.6 should just Install 10.6 system files over the top of 10.5 system files, & leave all your data intact on the drive.

  • HT2476 How do I upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 to lion 10.7?

I get an error message when tryin gto access the mac app store from my apple menu and any browser. I want to upgrade to iMovie '11 from '09. I also want to upgrade from snow leopard to lion.

Depends upon your machine if it can handle Lion or not.
Did you read the minimal specs? 2GB of RAM and a Intel Core 2 Duo (not Intel Core Duo) it really needs 4GB of RAM.
I don't advise any machine that came with 10.5 originally to upgrade to Lion, it's just too much for that older hardware and 10.8 is coming out very soon and that will not run on a lot of older machines so your behind again and having to buy all new software.
As you should know, your investment in PPC based software and hardware drivers for third party machines is not going to work in 10.7.

Perhaps you might want to wait for a new 10.8 or 10.9 machine.
If your sure about Lion, I highly advise making a bootable clone on a blank external drive first, makes it a cinch to come back to Snow.
Or at least disconnect your TimeMachine drive so it stays on 10.6, then you can erase from the disk and restore from TM.

  • How can I upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 on an i-Mac 24

I have an i-Mac 24, possibly pre dating 2007, I've had it four years and bought it from a re-furber.
But I want to be able to upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 ... every time I try I get the response that it is not possible with my device.
As always, Apple support seems to be like cracking a safe code....so here I am.
    Any advice?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Mavericks. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • I have an iMac 7.1 which has OSX 10.5.8 installed on it. How do I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Model ID: 7.1) with Mac OSX 10.5.8, (no new updates available) installed. I also use Time Machine with a La Cie 1TB external disk.
I occasionally have trouble sending mail from Mail (Version 3.6 (936)).
This computer is mainly used by my wife who uses it for email, some light web access, and some Word processingI.e. she is not a power user.
Is there any significant reason why I should upgrade her machine to Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6)?
If so, how do I do it? Do I have to order the DVD from Apple, or can I get it on line, and do I have to buy it?
    Thanks

"Is there any significant reason why I should upgrade her machine to Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6)?"
    No.
"If so, how do I do it? Do I have to order the DVD from Apple, or can I get it on line, and do I have to buy it?"
Buy the retail Snow Leopard DVD from Apple or Amazon (other places too). About $30 US. Current version is 10.6.3, so you'd need to apply the latest combo update to bring SL up to date.
From your description of the usage though, I frankly wouldn't bother. Leopard is perfectly fine and SL doesn't add anything of significance, other than a lot of grief updating printer drivers and third party software.

  • HT1338 how can I upgrade to snow leopard

I'm trying to get a new HD camcorder, and it seems that my iMovie is old, so I'm trying to upgrade my Mac software.  I'm still running 10.5.8 and I can't find anything anywhere about how to get Snow Leopard or Lion or Mountain Lion or whatever animal is currently the most recent version.  LOL
    HELPPPPPP !!!
I think I'm so outdated that I can't even download the software, and that I need to go to the Apple Store and get a disc or something????

Aways keep an eye on 'More like this', the column adjacent to your initial post.   You will often find answers and positive leads to your questions there.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion.    Start by buying the Snow Leopard retail disc
10.6.3, then update to 10.6.8 via the combo updater >>>

Buying Snow leopard from Apple.        Last I read, you must call them (1-800-MY-APPLE). It is $29 plus tax for family pack and $19 plus tax for a single.     The disc is no longer available through a store.
Before you buy anything, first make sure your Mac is compatible.

  • How can I upgrade to Snow Leopard with a broken cd drive?

I recently bought the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 cd and was looking forward to the upgrade. I forgot my cd drive is broken. How can I get around this? I tried zipping the file on a friends computer and unzipping on my computer (so I could fit the software on a thumb drive). Not successful. Other ideas?

If you have Mac or PC which has DVD drive, Remote DVD/CD drive could work.

  • How do I upgrade to Snow Leopard (and then Lion) if it's unavailable?

I have an imac that has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo... so, I should be able to run Mountain Lion.  However, my latest OSx update is version 10.5.8.
It looks like I need to update my OS to Snow Leopard before I can upgrade to Mountain Lion but I can't seem to find it available.  It looks like Apple had it available on their site last Fall but it's not there now.  Retail sites don't seem to carry it anymore, either.
What are my options? It seems silly that Apple is no longer offering it for sale when it's necessary to have (for some that don't have it) to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

  • How can I upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion from Leopard 10.5.8?

I can't find any way to get Snow Leopard from the apple store. It is on Amazon for $100+ and there are lots of fake ''free'' downloads online, but I don't want to use them?
Is there any ways to get to Snow Leopard or Lion from this old opperating system?!
My mac is a 2008 Macbook Pro.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
I just bought the iphone 5 but have a 2009 Macbook Pro so was running 10.5.8. Needed to upragde to snow leopard then to mountain lion. S.L. is no longer available in stores. The guy in the shop told to cal apple support (0800 048 0408) but was skepitcal. Amazin was quite expensive so I ended up ringing just to check... TOTALLY WORTH IT! Got it for £13, when I would have paid about £70. Apparently they are trying to encourage people to get SL so they can get the icloud.
Ring up! Honestly, their customer serivce was so helpful and lovely. Whole episode has reminded me why I love Apple.

  • How can I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks?

The thing is, some of my software doesn't yet work in Yosemite, and doesn't in Snow Leopard. I'm on an iMac (≈2010). I haven't downloaded Mavericks on anything else, so I don't have it in the app store, but I got a Macbook which came with Mavericks. Is it possible to do this?

No. Apple has removed Mavericks from downloading since the release of Yosemite.
