How do I use iTunes for 2 different iPods?

I just got my sister her first iPod, but her daughter's iPod is already set up on her computer. So we want to enable iTunes to support 2 iPods.
I was told that the only way to do this is to select certain playlists to be synched with one iPod and other playlists with the second iPod. However, I don't know how to do this.
My greatest concern is that as soon as I plug in one iPod it will automatically download all files. How does iTunes distinguish one iPod from the other?
This shouldn't be so hard. Any help would be great!

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one which has already been described is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). I have now created a second user account on my computer for someone else to access, and I want them to be able to access the full library which I have (4500 songs). How can I do this. Currently, when I open itunes in the other user's desktop, it is completely empty. I did try ticking share my music under preferences, but the library has still not appeared.... Well there are two way to go about this.
Number 1. Having seperate windows accounts, with iTunes on both, will give you seperate libraries.
Number 2. Set both iPods to update Automatically but to only the playlists you select. This will keep your playlists on it and whatever you don't want on there off. Same goes for the other iPod.
I myself use the number 2 option for my iPod Video and my Moms Nano. The only thind you got to remember, if you plan on updating or if you added new music and want it on your iPod, is to select the new playlist you made. This options works great

You need to "authorize" the Mac.
Launch iTunes on the Mac then from the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer.
Now, using the same Apple ID as you used to purchased iTunes media originally, you should be able to sync all your content.

I accidentally clicked the SET button in itunes which defaults itunes for internet playback.

Here's one way around it. For example, open iTunes, open the radio playlist and drag any station to the desktop. Highlight the icon, and click Command i. In the Info window there is a command "Open with:" It probably has iTunes as the default. If so, hold down the arrow for a menu of applications to choose from. (Mine has RealPlayer and Quicktime available.) If those aren't listed, choose "Other.." A window will open with available applications. Choose one and close the Info window. Open the application you've chosen. The controls will appear. Click Command o (Open). In the desktop window choose your radio station and play. I hope this works for you. It should work for any streaming source. Now if some body could tell me how to stop those irritating "rebuffering" interruptions, that'd be great.

How do I use iTunes with new iPod

I have my own video iPod, and use iTunes without a problem.
However, I bought a refurbished iPod for a relative, and am now trying to download music onto this new iPod. When I go into my iTunes with the new iPod connected to my computer, I can't get the new iPod to show up on the task bar -- so I can't download music onto it.

Using a second iPod is normally just a question of connecting it to your computer choosing how you want to update it and using your existing iTunes. You don't need a separate Windows account unless two users want to use the one computer and maintain separate libraries. You don't need two instances of iTunes for separate accounts. I would like to use the same PC with 15g (mostly mp3's)of music in my music folders for two devices WMP11(creative zen vision m) and itunes (video ipod).
I don't want the files to copy themselves into the itunes folder.
I have experimented adding folders to the itunes interface and while it doesn't copy music to itunes folder, it does pull in some stray wma's and then says "sorry wrong format". What if I want to clear a file? will it delete it from my hard drive or just delete it from the itunes library?
There has to be an easier way to use two types of players with one large selection of music.

iCloud is for document and data syncing and for backing up your iOS devices. I assume you mean iTunes match and iTunes in the cloud.
I couldn't really answer that question for you, I don't know how many movies etc you wish to carry arround with you, or whether you are in a location that allows downloading of TV shows or movies.
Myself I have always bought the 64 GB version of the iPad each time it's been released to give me access to my media content. I though it would be as simple as logging into her iTunes account through the iTunes software on my PC and then just download them through the program. That doesn't make any sense. She's logged into iTunes, We shouldn't have to create separate accounts on our PC. That should be handled by the iTunes software. If I log into say Netflix from my friends computer it will go to MY Netflix account. I wouldn't need to create an entire profile on his PC just to access my account.

i was wondering how i can use itunes to xfer music while disconnected to the net.
as it is right now (itunes v7.1), i get a message "cannot access itunes store", and will not bring up the usual menus on the left side of the itunes window where i view my music, vids, photos, and playlists.
needless to say, i dont even HAVE and itunes store account. it would be lovely if i could disable itunes store, but hey, i'm sure thats been made impossible.

for some reason when itunes first installs a new version, it opens up to the iTunes Store. Since you don't have net connection, its going to error out.
But the fact that you can't see any of the other items, I would recommend redownloading iTunes (and Quicktime to be sure) and reinstalling it and see if that helps.
Just for the record, can you click on the Library icon?
