How do you copy the entire contents of a hard drive?

Without all the permission issues and such? One example is when I try to copy my drive to an external firewire drive that's empty I get the can't copy a file cause one already exists. The drive is blank? I'm doing a quick reformat and it would be easiest to just copy the entire drive and pull files I need over later. It's a powerbook G4.

    How do I copy the entire contents of my laptops failing hard drive to copy back onto a new computer.

    If the drive has failed the only way to get any data off it is to send it to a Data Recovery company. Which is very expensive and no guaranty they will be able to retrieve any data.
    That is why Apple has included a system to backup your Mac on a regular basis, Time Machine. Also there are other Apps to do basically the same thing by Cloning your internal drive to an external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. Along with using Disk Utility to Image the internal drive to an external drive.
    Sorry to tell you but if the drive has really failed your Data is gone unless you pay a large sum of money to one of the Data recovery companies.

  • !0.5.8 How do I copy the 'system' form one internal Hard drive to an other (BY CD Packed up) Thank you

    !0.5.8 How do I copy the 'system' form one internal Hard drive to an other (BY CD Packed up)  I have tried but it will no show 'live' system folder - do and how can I bless it ? Thank you

    Carbon Copy Cloner will allow you to de-select directory trees, so you could use it to copy over everything EXCEPT the /Users directory tree.
    Mac OS X is NOT just the System Folder.  If you do not copy over the rest of Mac OS X, it will not boot.  So better to exclude Users and take everything else, then it is to try and pick and choose.
    The other approach is to install a New Mac OS X, and then copy over the stuff you want from the home folder(s) and reinstall any apps you want.

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

    how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. I have run backup now to an external drive so that is not an issue.

    Hi,
    Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:

  • How do you copy your iphoto library to ext. hard drive?

    I am sorry to ask this lame question, but: How do you copy your iPhoto library to an external hard drive, just to back it up? I'm confused, because of three things: a) I can't seem to find, in iPhoto pref's, where you select what the "path" is to the library; b) in the iPhoto library folder on my computer (which is NOT on my boot drive, but a different internal drive..) the newest "year" folder in there says 2005, yet we have imported many newly-taken photos for the last 3 years, AND c) in the user>Pictures folder there is a "file" called iPhoto Library, but I can't quite figure out exactly what that is, what it does, etc.
    So, I apologize, but if someone can help me figure what I would like to think should be a very simple backup, I would be grateful. Thank you very much.

    Drag it to the external drive
    a) I can't seem to find, in iPhoto pref's, where you select what the "path" is to the library;
    There not one - you change the path by launching iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and using the select library option to repoint to a different libary - however you would not do this to a backup library - it would just be a copy
    b) in the iPhoto library folder on my computer (which is NOT on my boot drive, but a different internal drive..) the newest "year" folder in there says 2005, yet we have imported many newly-taken photos for the last 3 years,
    This is probably an unused older library - a backup for a previous version
    c) in the user>Pictures folder there is a "file" called iPhoto Library, but I can't quite figure out exactly what that is,
    That probably is your iPhoto library and it is probably not a file but a Unix style "package"
    Launch iPhoto and in events view select a photo and right click (control click) on it and select the show file option to see the path to the currently active library - I find the column view the easiest to see the path

  • How do you install the OS on a new hard-drive?

    I have a Thinkpad T400 and I just received a new HDD today. I would like to reinstall windows and I have created 3 DVD's with the Create Product Recovery Media software. However, when the first disk loads up it asks me to insert the OS reinstall disk. It seems that none of the 3 DVD's I burned can be used for this. Am I doing something wrong? How can I install the OS that my Thinkpad came with onto this new HDD that I just purchased?

    I ran into exactly the same problem. I can't get past the first Start Recovery Disk. That one went without a problem. Then,when asked for the 'set of Operating Recovery Disks", I inserted the Product Recovery Disk 1 that I downloaded and it replies 'wrong disk'. I tried the Product Recovery Disk 2 and got the same reply.
    Any ideas? Thanks
    Hi and welcome to the forum fomiga!

  • How do you Determine the Largest Size/Fastest Speed Hard Drive

    In general, how do you determine the maximum hard drive size/speed you can upgrade to?

    As long as the drive your are considering physically fits as already stated there is no maximum size you can install. Please complete your profile so we know what machine you have.
    If your machine is covered by a warranty or AppleCare I would recommend against installing another HD as this may invalidate the warranty. I would recommend in that case using a Firewire 800 external HD instead.

  • HT1338 how do you copy all deleted emails to external hard drive

    i am running out of space on my macbook pro...  what is the easiest way to put them on a external drive?

    If they are "deleted" emails, shouldn't you just empty the Trash in Mail?
    I don't think you can move the storage location of the data files used by the Mail app, because they are stored in the Library folder of your user home folder, which is located on the startup disk (the internal drive volume) by default.  You can change the location of your entire user home folder, but you don't want to put it on an external drive volume, because there may be situations (especially for a MacBook) when the external drive is not connected.
    If you have a lot of stuff in your iTunes library, you may want to move your iTunes Media folder to an external hard drive volume, as a way to free up space on the internal drive

  • How do you find the right replacement for a hard drive

    i have a 2007 macbook and the hard drive just went out and i want to find a new one that would be combatible

    For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
    Or OWC for regular hard drives and SSDs  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
    Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
    After you put in your new hard disk put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
    Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
    You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

  • How do you print the entire contents from a data field?

    I have a simple Acrobat form that was sent to me and one of the data fields employs a scroll bar because it contains more text than the field can hold. How do I print my document so that it prints everything in that field, not just was is visible?
    Thanks

    I'm not sure you can do this with a standard Adobe Acrobat form. If the form is created with Acrobat Designer (Windows, not Mac product) there is the possibility to have the field grow in size. Designer based forms can be used on a Mac, but cannot  be created under the Mac OS (virtualization excluded).

  • How do I mark the entire contents of a RichTextBox (gRTbxInfo) with a background color of white?

    How do I mark the entire contents of a RichTextBox (gRTbxInfo) with a background color of white?
    I have code that finds / marks words with a different color.  Now I want to remove that color.  I've started with the following, but cannot complete it.
        //int iLength = gRTbxInfo.Length
        int iLength = 10;
        TextRange trText = new TextRange(gRTbxInfo.Document.ContentStart, gRTbxInfo.Document.ContentEnd);
        TextPointer tpStart = trText.Start.GetInsertionPosition(LogicalDirection.Forward);
        TextPointer tpSelectionStart = tpStart.GetPositionAtOffset(0, LogicalDirection.Forward);
        TextPointer tpSelectionEnd = tpSelectionStart.GetPositionAtOffset(iLength, LogicalDirection.Forward);
        TextRange tpSelection = new TextRange(tpSelectionStart, tpSelectionEnd);
        tpSelection.ApplyPropertyValue(TextElement.BackgroundProperty, new SolidColorBrush(Colors.White));

    Isn't that just
    TextRange tr = new TextRange(rtb.Document.ContentStart, rtb.Document.ContentEnd);
    tr.ApplyPropertyValue(TextElement.BackgroundProperty, Brushes.White);
    Hope that helps.

  • Can you add the entire content of your desktop to the allowable locations in flash player?

    can you add the entire content of desktop to the allowable locations in flash player?  when i click 'add' to allowable locations and type in file:///C:/Documents and Settings under website (i know it's not the website but where else would it be added) it doesn't show up in the overall list of allowable 'sites'.

    Hi radwh,
    Are you talking about trying to add your desktop to Flash Player's trusted locations? If so, you use the "Advanced" tab on the Local Settings Manager to designate folders and files as trusted. (Full path is Advanced->Developer Tools->Trusted Location Settings.) Here's a link to the documentation for that: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlayer/LSM/WS6aa5ec234ff3f285139dc56112e3786b68c-7ff0.htm l .
    Hope this helps, and get back to me with further details if this is not what you were asking.

  • Praviliuon dv7 hard drive; need to transfer entire contents to new hard drive

    My hard drive is on it last leg and
    I would like to transfer the entire contents to a new drive to invlude my operating system.

    Hi,
    If your current HDD is still working, try making a Image of the drive.
    You can use Windows 7 Imaging utility to back-up a copy of your HDD to an external HDD - the procedure is described on the following link.
    http://www.shivaranjan.com/2009/05/20/windows-7-how-to-create-a-system-image-of-a-hard-disk-partitio...
    At the end of this process, make sure you create the System Repair Disc.
    You can then load this saved Image to your new HDD by booting from the System Repair Disc, selecting 'Repair Your Computer' and follow Method 3 on the link below.
