How do you set up an Airport Extreme to extend the range of a Verizon router?

Basically I want to know if the new Airport Extreme can be used fro extend the range of a Verizon modem/router?

Not by wireless. The apple routers can act as repeaters only to another apple router.
You can use ethernet or homeplug (EOP adapter) to place the Airport in another location where you need wireless and set it up in bridge mode.
Or you can buy another airport.. a cheap second hand extreme is very possible.. plug that into  the Verizon by ethernet and extend with the second apple wireless.. but nope.. you cannot do it directly.

Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.
    Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Tesserax,
Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices.
I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.

  • How do i use airport extreme to extend the range of my imac

I have an 2012 Imac and I would like to plug the Internet to my imac and use the the imac wireless and use my airport express to extend the range of the imac wireless signal.  I am having an awfully hard time figuring this out - can anyone pass along a link to a document or any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Apple's instructions for this are here:

Although two AirPort Extremes are pictured in the example, the setup for a Time Capsule and AirPort Express would be exactly the same.
In general, a good starting location for the AirPort Express would be a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. You may need to experiment with the location of the Express a bit depending on the number of obstructions like walls and/or ceilings in the signal path

  • How do I resolve error 10057 when trying to set up my airport express to extend the range of my wireless network

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • How do i set up my airport extreme to access from my work windows based PC

How do I set up my airport extreme to access from my work windows based pc?

To mount the AirPort Disk in Windows 7 or Vista:
Open the Network browser by double-clicking Network on the Windows Desktop.
The AirPort Extreme base station name should appear in the browswer.
Double-click the name and you should get a login prompt.
Now depending on how you set up disk access:
In the Name field, either enter the user account name or for base station/disk access, leave this field blank.
In the Password field, enter the base station, disk, or user account password.
Select the volume(s) you want to mount, and then, click OK.

How can I set up mhy Airport Express to extend my Time Capsule wifi wirelessly
Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.

i have an airport extreme attached to cable, then one airport express to extend the range. when i try to add an additional airport express to extend range in another area of house, can't get it to work. utility says it has found a new base station and asks if i want to use it. if i click yes, then the old setup is disabled.

Ok, thanks for clarifying which models you have. Please see the following Apple Support article on how to configure these older base stations for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • Help: Using Airport Express to extend the range of Airport Extreme

I am trying to use the Airport Express to extend the range of the network created by my Airport Extreme. The Express works in terms of streaming music from iTunes on the PC connected to th Extreme.
However, I am trying to run a short Cat-5 cable out of the Express to a nearby PC in order to have access to the internet. If the Express is recognized by the Extreme and can play music through connected stereo cables, why can I get an internet connection through the LAN port..??
Here's a real basic representation of my connections...
    Cable Modem >>-- Cat5 -->> Airport Extreme >>-- Wireless -->> Airport Express >>-- Cat5 -->>PC#2

To wirelessly extend the range between two AirPorts, you need to configure them in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
To facilitate the WDS set up, try the following:
o Perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Stations & a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) before setting up the WDS.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach each of the remote/relay base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station. Of course, this would be dependent on the AirPort types used for the main/relays/remotes.
o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the relay/remote base stations first and the main base station last.

  • HT4259 I am trying to connect airport express to extend the range of my airport tower. What type of cords do I need to connect the airport express to a hardwired outlet in the wall of a bedroom?

I am trying to connect my airport express to extend the range of my network to a bedroom that is hard wired for internet. What type of cord/cords do I need to do that?

You can connect the AirPort Express to the wall port in the bedroom for the setup.....but first....if you have not already done so.....it would be a great idea to make sure that the connection in the bedroom is working correctly.
To do that, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop directly to the wall port in the bedroom using an Ethernet cable. Make sure that the laptop can get a good Internet connection that way.  If it can, this tells you that the cabling is working correctly, so the Express will work well when you connect it up.
If you don't have a laptop with an Ethernet port, then we'll have to assume that the folks that pulled the cables and installed the jacks tested things as part of the installation.
When you are ready to install the Express, you can use an iPhone or iPad if you have one handy for the setup.

  • How do I set up my AirPort Extreme  to provide IP addresses without being connected to the Internet?

II'm trying to set up my AirPort Extreme in the field without an Internet connection so that devises can communicate wirelessly but there aren't any IP addresses being generated

Just run the AE in router mode.. if you have difficult with the setup do it completely manually..
This is how I do it.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
As long as the AE is running in DHCP and NAT mode it will produce IP addresses.. however you cannot turn off WAN.
You could give it a static IP .. so set to static instead of dhcp if you like.. eg.
DNS and WAN errors.. double NAT, Ethernet unplugged, etc.. so it makes no real difference..
The AE will function fine as router (Wireless AP) to your network however..
    Just ignore all the errors.

  • How can I set up an Airport Extreme as a router, in conjunction with my AT&T modem/router?

I am trying to set up an Airport Extreme as my router, and I am currently using an AT&T modem/router combo. I am wondering what would be the easiest way to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme. This cable must remain in place permanently.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on AirPort Extreme xxxxx
The utility will take a moment to analyze the connection, then a screen similar to this will appear with your AirPort Extreme instead of an AirPort Express
Type in a short simple name that you want to use for the wireless network
Type in a device name for the AirPort Extreme
Enter a password that will be used for both the AirPort Extreme and wireless network
    Verify the password
    Click Next
The utility will setup everything for you. When the message of Setup Complete appears, click Done and close AirPort Utility.
The AirPort Extreme wireless network is now available.

  • How can I utilize a 2nd Airport Extreme to extend a network but not WIFI, only hardwired?

Hi All.  Need your help figuring this out.  The location of the cable line in my home causes a bit of an issue for my internet dependant electronics.  My computers have no problem connecting over Wifi but certain peripherals require an ethernet connection as Wifi is not an option for them.  I have prepared this quick diagram to explain my perfect set up.  I have a current gen Airport Extreme and a Previous gen as well.  How can I set my 2nd Airport to receive the Wifi from my main airport, but then only serve as a router, not extend the WIRELESS network.  Only provide a hardwired network.  In other words, I know how to "extend network" with airport utility, but then the 2nd airport also casts its own wifi network and causes problems.  I only want the one single Wifi network.  The 2nd router should only be providing ethernet connectivity.
Is this even possible?  Both Airports are running the most updated firmware.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

With a properly configured extended network both AirPorts will be broadcasting the "same" Wi-Fi network. This shouldn't impact wired clients at all. The other advantage of using an extended network is that your older AirPort Extreme's Ethernet ports will be enabled for wired clients.
At present the only other option would be to connect the older Extreme to the newer one using an Ethernet connection between them. Then disable the older Extreme's Wi-Fi radios.
