How do you view file on an external drive using Unix?

Hi Folks,
I'm a serious UNIX newbie...Basically I took up unix in order to use a specific image processing software package... I've learned enough to write a script to batch process all of my images, but I have so many that I would like to use an external (USB) drive to hold the data and point the script towards those files.
Is there any way to navigate to an external drive in UNIX?
I see a lot about "mounting" drives, but I have no idea how to do this... I really need someone to hold my hand!
Thanks.
-Brent.

PS:
here is an example of mounting a network drive if you have to go across the network and actually have the external drive mounted, as opposed to just copying to/from (which would probably be the case coz' things like "scp" are going to ask you for a password):
mount -t smb server.work.com:/vol/vol0/Projects /Projects
-t is keyword for type of of filesystem and smb is the actual type.
server.work.com:/vol/vol0/Projects is path to actual directory on external networked drive. The trailing "/Projects" is the mount point and name on your computer.
Visit the "man" pages for mount in Terminal for more info, at prompt, type
man mount
You won't have to bother with this with a locally mounted (i.e., on the same computer that you are working on) firewire or USB drive. The local path is just
/Volumes/{NameOfExternalFirewireOrUSBdrive}/{filepath}

iPhoto is not a photo viewer, it's a photo manager with non-destructive processing. If you want a photo viewer, check put Preview.

Files on an external hard drive open just like files on the internal drive - but I get the idea that you are having a problem just finding and seeing those files. Is that correct?

  • ?: How do you move files to an external hard drive

    Hello everyone,
    I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5
I am starting to run out of internal HD space as my images in Photoshop are very large (over 1 GB ea.)
I currently use an external hard drive for Time Machine but would like to use a different external hard drive just to have my photo images on it.
Im assuming that i would purchase another external hard drive formatted for mac, plug it into my MBP and simply drag my image files from my MBP onto the external hard drive icon. After that just delete the images from my MBP HD. Is that all there is to it?
I wasnt sure if there was a step in there where you have to tell your MBP that the new external hard drive is NOT for Time Machine, but is simply to transfer image files onto (?)
Please let me know if this is how it works and how to do this.
best to you all and thanks so much for your help
    take care,

    Rick,
the “EDIT” note in my last response was an “oh yeah, I should mention this” moment that I’d had after initially responding with my single “yup” sentence. You had mentioned that you were already using Time Machine to back up your internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I’d wanted to clarify that your new external hard disk should not be simultaneously used as a Time Machine backup drive; it should be treated just like your internal hard disk, in that it gets backed up by Time Machine (a “source” drive) rather than receives Time Machine backups (a “destination” drive), which your current external hard drive already does.
As far as my recommendations, I’ve had good results with the Hitachi hard drive series with five-year warranties. I’m currently using a Samsung 840 PRO SSD as my internal disk; so far, so good, but I don’t have long-term experience with it yet. (The 840 PRO has a five-year warranty also. As you can tell, I prefer drives with long warranties.) Since you have a 2009 MacBook Pro, getting your new drive in an external enclosure with a FireWire 800 port (and getting a FireWire 800 cable for it, of course) will allow the best performance when reading from or writing to it. Since it will be holding large images, performance will probably be an important criterion for you.
To set up your new external drive to be backed up by Time Machine, plug it in to your MacBook Pro, open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences, unlock the lock in the lower left corner if it shows a locked padlock,  press the “Options…” button in the lower right corner, and make sure that your new external drive is not in the list of drives excluded from being backed up. If it’s not there, then you should be good. If it is there, then you’ll need to select it and press the “-” button to “subtract” it from the list of excluded drives.

    MBP 10.9.2

    Hi -
We haven't similiar extertal device in hand currently. So we tried to reproduce the issue with an external device ORICO 8628SUSC-PRO dual bay hard drive dock. It has eSATA (3GB/s) and USB (2.0) Ports. And connected it to a Mac Tower with 10.9.2 OS.
After tried several times with different capacity 500GB, 2.0TB, 4.0TB, etc, the hard drives could all be recognized by Prelude CC without any issue through eSATA and USB connection.
We also tried to connect a Synology 4 bay disk station, but failed. Because it only could be attached with kinds of external hard disks.
How did you connect your OWC device, by eSATA cable or USB? I noticed that your HDD has much higher interface than ours (your device interface: eSATA 6.0GB/s, USB 3.0; our device interface: eSATA 3GB/s and USB 2.0). I’m not sure whether the issue is caused by this. We are still working on this issue. Will keep you update.

  • How can I import files from an external drive?

    Hello everyone,
I have an external drive containing all the video files I want to make a DVD from,
but when I open iDVD I am not able to select these files(as they are not in imoves / iphoto etc),
how can I get to these files to import them to an iDVD project without copying them to my hard drive?
    thanks!
    Dan

    Hi
To little info to be able to answer.
    Movie file - in what format/codec ?
Convert it into - StreamingDV .mov - then just drop it into iDVD Menu window (avoid active zoones).
BUT - if movie is 30fps - then start the iDVD project as NTSC/29.97 fps or if 25fps then let iDVD do a PAL (25fps) project.
Forcing iDVD to convert "works" - BUT result is from BAD to Worse !
I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert fps PAL/NTSC - as it does this very good and is free on internet.

  • When/how do you move files off of Hard Drive to make new room.

Maybe this is simple; I understand so far that you can choose the Library folder for iTunes and that that is the source of all songs, album cover art, everything that iTunes needs to display all the information for tunes. Please correct me if I am wrong on that.
When the directory fills up to the point that it is taking over your startup drive, then the iTunes library folder can be moved to an external backup drive and iTunes can start up fresh, empty, and ready to receive new songs. Also, Please correct me if that is not correct.
How many songs do you contain in iTunes before you consider it is too unwieldy and time to start fresh?
I've never done this before, new first-time iPod user here, and would like some pointers on how to handle this.
    Thanks In Advance,
    Ken

When the directory fills up to the point that it is taking over your startup drive, then the iTunes library folder can be moved to an external backup drive and iTunes can start up fresh, empty, and ready to receive new songs.
You can move it but you do not need to "start fresh".
Just move the folder to the external drive and use it for everything.
No need to use the internal drive.
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
    3 Restart iTunes holding (Shift-Windows, Option-Mac).
4 Select Choose library. Select the library in the folder you just moved.
5 Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
6 Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.
How many songs do you contain in iTunes before you consider it is too unwieldy and time to start fresh?
Over 100,000 songs and it will start to slow down.

  • SuperDuper - how do you partition a partially written external drive?

Just downloaded this program. I read it's best to partition the external drive otherwise it may overwrite existing data. My 150 GB external is 1/4 full. Can I partition it without distrubing the currently written data? How much space I need to assign to the partitioned section for backups?

I'm pretty sure you can't repartition without disturbing an existing partition, particularly if there's only one partition at the moment. If it's one quarter full, perhaps you can copy what's there back to the internal, repartition the external into the scheme you want, and then copy back to the external. But if you're only going to partition it to the same single partition you had before, there's no need to do it unless it was not formatted as the GUID type, which you need to boot an intel mac.
SuperDuper clones your drive, so it makes the external exactly like your internal and bootable too (assuming you do have the GUID type). So you can't have additional material on the drive to which you're cloning, as it wouldn't be a clone, right? What I do is use a 250 gig external, partitioned into two 125 gig partitions. One of them I use for SuperDuper to clone my internal, and the other I use for other backups of specific folders, offline storage of Aperture libraries, etc.

  • How do you view files in the icloud

My iphone has 4.9GB of data backed up to iCloud and I have only the 5G capacity and don't want to buy more.  I moved about half my data off my iPhone and now only have about 2 GB.  After moving the data off the iPhone, I then I backed up my iPhone to iCloud and it still said I had 4.9GB.  I figured it would remove from iCloud the data I moved off my iPhone.  Is there any way to go see what files are stored in iCloud or any way to reduce the size of iCloud  by removing them by doing a backup of my iPhone.
One other thing.  Although what I moved and deleted were mostly photos, is there a recycle bin on an iPhone I also need to empty that might be included in the iCloud backup?
Ultimately, I just want to reduce the size of iCloud to be similar to the amount of data on my iPhone.

Thanks for the messages.  I've also figured out the primary question of how to get the size of the iCloud size down after I removed files from my iPhone.  You have to Turn Off and Delete the the Camera Roll category for example, then turn it back on.  Then do another backup and this will resize the iCloud file size.

  • HOW do you save FCP X to external drives?

How do I set the scratch disk or change where my project is saved in FCP X?

With hair tearing frustration I can second that:
Just freed up 1tb drive, formatted for OSX Extended so we dont get the FAT 4GB file limit,
proceeded to make that my time machine backup, then loaded all my footage (which i archive off my cam manually by copying the BDMV folders, as my JVC only has 32GB internal so i do 'daily' footage copies and erase the cam) onto the drive, ready to use with my amazing new fcpx and, -  Whoa!
The amazement continues as only my moviecore drive (fat32) shows up in fcp, and not my AVCHDCore!!!
In one day of toying around, my meagre 320GB startup disk is so full of needlessly cached video files (which also had to be copied FROM the external disk when log/transfer or import from camera is performed), that the VM storage bound itself into knot and i had to force restart my machine.
While many professionals have workflow issues, FCPX seems great compared with the clunky, premiere style NLE of past versions, its a breeze with the clip/subclip management/linking happening in the background, not to mention proper multitask rendering.
But the orwellian treatment to your loyal customers who proudly use (or, used to) your products in both home and professional environments is staggering.
Please dont americanise your approach to your customers Apple, removing peoples rights and capabilities and telling them you're making it easier for them.
