How does changeip determine the dns hostname?

Hello,
i've been trying to setup my 'test' server at home according to the info i find online.
one of the first parts is setting the hostname. It is recomended that you use something like
server.myowndomain.com
when i use sudo changeip -checkhostname i get
Primary address     = 192.168.xx.xx
Current HostName    = server.myowndomain.com
DNS HostName        = myowndomain.com
To fix the hostname please run changeip for your system with the
appropriate directory with the following values
   /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/sbin/changeip 192.168.xx.xx 192.168.xx.xx server.myowndomain.com myowndomain.com
dirserv:success = "success"
at my external dns control panel there are 2 A records for my domain name
localhost
A
127.0.0.1
server
A
78.xxx.xxx.xxx
when i ping from a remote location i get results for both myowndomain.com and server.myowndomain.com
i had my server working when i used myowndomain.com as hostname, but everywhere i read it says you should use something like server.myowndomain.com as a hostname.
Is there an other tool i can use to check what dns hostname i'm having?
can someone shed some light on this for me please?
thanks
Marco

If you are setting up your server on your LAN, then you need to support what is called split horizon DNS.  This means that you need to run a public DNS (which you have based on the ("at my external dns control panel there are 2 A records for my domain name") and you must run DNS on your LAN as well.  The reason for this is simple.
When running your server on a LAN behind a firewall, your server has two identities.  The first identity is its LAN address.  As above, this is something on the 192.168.x.x network.  This is a private address range and can not be used for public routing.  The second identity is that of the public Internet.  As above, this is represented by the 78.x.x.x address that is the public address used by your firewall.
When users on the LAN reference your server, they will need to reference it by the 192.168.x.x address.  When users externally want to access it, they will need to route to the 78.x.x.x network.  Thus, the need for two DNS entries.
Now, the DNS entries are commonly the same.  The difference is the number assigned to the record.  For example, server.myowndomain.com will point to 192.168.x.x on your LAN and server.myowndomain.com with point to 78.x.x.x on the WAN.
Other ways to check DNS would be to use nslookup or dig.  Also, check the server's network preference panel and look at your DNS entries.  The first entry should be a 192.168.x.x address and it should be pointing to a DNS server on your LAN.  This could be you server or it could be another device that is already running DNS.
DNS is considered the foundation service for OS X Server.  However, it all depends on the services that you are running.  For Open Directory, Profile Manager, and others, DNS is critical.  Failure to implement it properly will give you nothing but headaches and likely cause future service deployment issues.  However, if you are just hosting a bunch of web sites, then DNS is not as critical, especially if the server is deployed on a LAN with no clients.
As a note, if you were running your server with a public address, you could use BIND views.  However, this is not advisable for security reasons.

This may be a basic question... but in InDesign, how does one determine the pixel size of a text box? Specifically, we need to write text to specifications of 600 pixel width, and have no idea a) how to scale a text box to specific pixel width, b) how to determine what word count we can fit in, and c) how to do it in a table? Thanks!

Set your ruler increments to pixels Preferences>Units & Increments. You can fill the text box with placeholder text Type>Fill with Placeholder text and get a word count from the Info panel with Show Options turned on from the flyout.
From the Transform panel you can set a text box's width and height

  • How does one determine the amperage in macbook pro 5,4

I need to replace the battery for my MBP 5,4 and have tried about 4 or 5 by now and none of them are holding a decent charge by which I mean more than an hour or so.  I've tried to educate myself on the meanings of amperage, mAh, watt hours, etc, etc, to determine what I need to look for in a compatible battery that may mean it'll last longer but I'm lost in the technicalities of the electronics field.  Any guidance out there??

Yes, battery manufacturers are very imaginative with their specs (or what they leave out of the specs), you need 60 watts to run your Mac, extra is wasted. What the spec omits is how long the battery can supply it for.
    Buy a genuine Apple one.
You get what you pay for, no more. (especially with expensive batteries)
But I do have one more query, does your Mac run hot?

  • How does iPhoto determine the recent photos in the sidebar?

    Hello All,
My iPhoto library is fixated on one date and always shows the same date at the top of the Recent group.  I have imported many photos since that date but it continues to show the single date - containing a single photo.
Where or How is iPhoto making this decision/calculation?  It's kinda funny...but annoying too.
    Thx

Sorry it was too complicated for you
    By  looking  at "recent" activity
The activities you have recently engaged in
So the top item is the most recent event viewed and changes when you view different events
The item at the top of the list - the one you ask about - is the event you most recently viewed - each time yu view a new event it changes to the then most recently viewd event
    - the last "n" months is the last "n" months photos and changes when the month changes
THe last "n" months item (by default the last "12" months) shows the photos imported in the last "n" months and it changes each time you import photos
    - the last import is the last group of photos imported and changes with each import
The item called last import shows the photos you imported on the last import - each time you import it changes to the then last import
    - etc - etc
And so on  --  and so on - each item has a clear set of photos and a clear update cycle - all depending on your "recent activity"
    Enjoy

  • How does iOS4 determine the time?

I've seen several topics but no resolution. What I thought initially was a Telus (Canada) thing, I've instead come to realize it must be a iPhone or iOS4 thing ...
That is, my new iPhone 4 was born 45 seconds ahead of accurate time, and it has since lost ~1 sec per day and is now 13 sec behind. I've just been around the world, and it cannot be a Telus (or any carrier) problem because I've employed pre-paid SIMs in Jo'berg (Vodacom) and in Brisbane (Optus), to return to Canada, re-insert the Telsus SIM, and the clock never changed ('cept to change relative to the local time zone).
It's ironic that I forsake an accurate wrist watch in lieu of the extra $$ for the quality the iPhone generally represents. There are clock apps that will show me accurate time via network time servers (eg, Emerald-Sequoia), but iOS4 (and Apple) disallows 3rd-party synchronization ... which is reasonable, but why doesn't Apple create and use a similar app for providing accurate time?
40 seconds, or where (when?) my iPhone will eventually end up are not trivial -- even to be 5 seconds off should be an embarrassment for Apple in this day&age. In what time zone will my iPhone eventually end? I simply do not get it??

Please explain " ...as soon as I changed cell at London City Airport a couple of stations down the track ..." relative the plausibility of my swapping SIMs twice in 2 different counties, on both sides of the IDL, then to return to Canada, in a location other than my home, and still have the minute+second hands in the same place(?)

  • How does SharePoint determine files are duplicates in search results?

In the search results, some files are grouped as duplicates (a hyperlink view duplicates appears under the search result).
How does SharePoint determines that 2 files are duplicates?
How does SharePoint determines the one that is shown in the search result (the 'main' file)?
    Can we influence both?
    Patrik | My Blog

I don't know if this helps, but I've been looking into the same problem that's come to light a few times during troubleshooting customised deployments of SharePoint recently.  This is my understanding so far (paraphrased from http://blogs.technet.com/harikumh/archive/2008/11/14/some-interesting-facts-about-sharepoint-2007-search.aspx):
Document similarity or matching for the purposes of identifying duplicates is based only on a hash of the content of the document.  None of the file properties are used in calculating the hash (i.e. things like filename, author, create and modify dates are not used).  The SQL table MSSDuplicateHashes in the SSP’s search database holds all the 64bit hashes necessary to determine if one document is a near-duplicate of another against each indexed document.  This table is read while doing a search to determine duplicates if removal of duplicates is enabled.

  • How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport

How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport
I want to use dns servers other then the one that airport extreme is using. For example I got the 172.16.1.1 (the default gateway - airport extreme), but I want to use the office dns servers, that are in a 10.x.x.x range.
    Is there a possibility?
    Thanks and happy eastern

The Airport Extreme uses the DNS servers assigned by the network that it connects to. Is you Airport Extreme on the 10.x.x.x network? if it is then you are already using the 10.x.x.x DNS servers. Check your Airport Extreme with the Airport Utility and you will see in the Internet tab, the DNS servers used. The devices connecting to the Airport Extreme are assigned a DNS address of the Airport Extremes IP, In your case 172.16.1.1 but all DNS searches and resolution are done with the DNS servers you see in the Airport Extreme.
If you want to use some other DNS then you can override in the Airport Extreme which will be used by all devices connecting too the Airport Extreme, Or you can edit the DNS address in each devices wireless settings.

If you're running iPhoto 8 (09) select the event and look at the Info pane at the lower left hand corner of the window.  It will give you the number of photos and size:
for iPhoto 9 (11) open the Event, select all of the photos in it and open the Info drawer at the right by typing Command+i.  The number of photos and size will be at the top of the Info drawer.

how does vendor determine if no info record is maintained for the material

    Hi
If you have to determine a vendor, the minimum requirement is Info record. Beyond that, you can ofcourse maintain Source Lists, Quota Arrangements but Info record is bare minimum for automatic determination of vendor.
Otherwise, you have to maintain the vendor manually in th Purchasing docs.
Tcodes for Info record are ME11, ME12, and ME13.
    Hope this clarifies.

  • How can i change the DNS Name of a 10.6 Server

Hello when i installed the Server i made a mistake and put in a wrong dns name wich is not reachable from the clients. How can i Chane the DNS Name?

The core command is changeip, and Google will find some details and discussions.
    $ man changeip
    $ changeip {-v} {-d path} directory-node old-ip new-ip {old-hostname new-hostname}
It's not always successful; the host name tends to get embedded everywhere.
For the official documentation on this, see the [Advanced Server Management Manual|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/ServerAdminv10.6.pdf] for a discussion of what (else) needs to happen when the IP settings change; see the +Understanding Changes to the Server IP Address or Network Identity+ section.

  • How can I determine the type of video out connector I need?

    Howdy,
I have a white macbook purchased Jun/2008. I want to connect to a TV but don't know what adapter I need. How can I determine the type of video out jack my macbook has?
System Profiler says the model identifier is "MacBook 4,1". Under Graphics/Displays the only thing it says about the "Display Connector" is that no display is connected. Too bad it doesn't tell me what type of connector it is. If I knew the name of the connector I'd probably be home free. But it seems like every macbook model has a different video connector (since the state of the art has advanced over the years) and I haven't been able to keep up with the names.
Now, I have a 6" long adapter that will convert this connector to VGA. And searching the Apple store for VGA adapters, the existence of mine says my connector is might be one of "Mini DisplayPort", "Apple Mini DVI", "Apple DVI", or "Apple Micro-DVI". But then there is also the connector at
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8639G/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
and that looks like the one I have. But unlike the other adapters, this one is just called a "VGA Display Adapter". Does the connector have a name? How can I find adapters that have that same connector?
I know I could use the adapter I have, plus a VGA to VGA cable, to hook up to a TV. But the quality of the VGA signal is poor in the digital world. My goal is to hook up to the TV via HDMI. Is this even possible? By which I mean, will my macbook generate the signals necessary to be able to be converted to HDMI?
    Thanks for any help,
    Zebulon T

    Thanks, Ded,
You're right, the cable that I have won't work. I't from my previous, 2004 iBook. This is pretty embarrassing... I looked at the cable but didn't bother to try plugging it in.
Looking at the close-up picture of the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, that does look like the right connector. So I have Mini-DVI, and the other apter you pointed to can convert this to DVI. I'll take a look to see what makes the most sense, connector wise, downstream from that.
    Thanks very much.

  • How Can I Determine the Size of the 'My Documents' Folder for every user on a local machine using VBScript?

    Hello,
I am at my wits end into this. Either I am doing it the wrong way or it is not possible.
Let me explain. I need a vb script for the following scenario:
    1. The script is to run on multiple Windows 7 machines (32-Bit & 64-Bit alike).
    2. These are shared workstation i.e. different users login to these machines from time to time.
    3. The objective of this script is to traverse through each User Profile folder and get the size of the 'My Documents' folder within each User Profile folder. This information is to be written to a
.CSV file located at C:\Temp directory on the machine.
    4. This script would be pushed to all workstations from SCCM. It would be configured to execute with
    System Rights
I tried the script detailed at:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2005/03/31/how-can-i-determine-the-size-of-the-my-documents-folder.aspx
    Const MY_DOCUMENTS = &H5&
    Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
    Set objFolder = objShell.Namespace(MY_DOCUMENTS)
    Set objFolderItem = objFolder.Self
    strPath = objFolderItem.Path
    Set objFolder = objFSO.GetFolder(strPath)
    Wscript.Echo objFolder.Size
The Wscript.Echo objFolder.Size command in the script at the above mentioned link returned the value as
'0' (zero) for the current logged on user. Although the actual size was like 30 MB or so.
I then tried the script at:
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Languages/Visual_Basic/VB_Script/Q_27869829.html
This script returns the correct value but only for the current logged-on user.
    Const blnShowErrors = False
' Set up filesystem object for usage
    Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    ' Display desired folder sizes
    Wscript.Echo "MyDocuments : " & FormatSize(FindFiles(objFSO.GetFolder(objShell.SpecialFolders("MyDocuments"))))
' Recursively tally the size of all files under a folder

    FindFiles = FindFiles + FindFiles(objSubFolder)
    If Err.Number <> 0 Then ShowError "FindFiles:05", objSubFolder.Path
    Next
    Else
    ShowError "FindFiles:03", objFolder.Path
    End If
    End Function
' Function to format a number into typical size scales
    Function FormatSize(iSize)
aLabel = Array("bytes", "KB", "MB", "GB", "TB")
    For i = 0 to 4
If iSize > 1024 Then iSize = iSize / 1024 Else Exit For End If
    Next
    FormatSize = Round(iSize, 2) & " " & aLabel(i)
    End Function
    Sub ShowError(strLocation, strMessage)
    If blnShowErrors Then
    WScript.StdErr.WriteLine "==> ERROR at [" & strLocation & "]"
    WScript.StdErr.WriteLine " Number:[" & Err.Number & "], Source:[" & Err.Source & "], Desc:[" & Err.Description & "]"
    WScript.StdErr.WriteLine " " & strMessage
    Err.Clear
    End If
    End Sub
The only part pending, is to achieve this for the 'My Documents' folder within each User Profile folder.
    Is this possible?
    Please help.

Here are a bunch of scripts to get folder size under all circumstances.  Take your pick.

  • I have 2 websites and 1 IP address for my server, how do I set the DNS up?

I am having trouble following the boards and the Server Admin instructions to make sure I can activate a website.
IP address for the Snow Leopard Server on a mac mini
Server Settings for Web has the 2 domain names listed pointing to the same IP address and same port 80.
How do I point the DNS correctly to the domain I want to respond?  www.ziggythewinegal.com
If you put the IP address in a browser, it returns the default domain which is just the apache/osx server page. 64.142.85.71
If you put the first domain name in a browswer, it does the same. www.JoelQuigley.com
How do I setup the DNS to www.ziggythewinegal.com which is in the folder WebServer>ziggy>index.php ?

64.142.85.71 has an existing public DNS translation, so you'll be adding DNS CNAME (alias) records for the each of the additional hosts into your public DNS at WorldNIC DNS servers.
Your local host either isn't running DNS, or it's running local DNS.  If it's running local DNS, then hopefully it's not running with the same domain name as your public DNS services; that you have an external DNS zone and an internal DNS zone, with an external DNS domain and an internal domain name.  If you are running DNS locally and are using the same domain name for internal and external DNS servers, then you'll also need to add the translation for the new web sites into your local DNS server configuration.
Once the translation is added, add - as John Lockwood indicates - Sites into your web server.
The numbers of folders can vary.  Different sites may or may not be in the same folder, depending on what you're doing. Multiple ttraditional static HTML web sites are probably stored in separate folders.  A single site with several names can be in the same folder.  A web content management system (CMS) can be stored in one folder.
If you have a firewall here (and you should), then you may need some additional steps.  Particularly if you're running NAT, and don't already have rules and port-forwarding enabled on the server.  Given it appears you're using mail with this server, there are likely some rules in place, though you'll need to confirm that port 80 TCP and possibly port 443 TCP are (also) being forwarded for your web services.
Here is a write-up on adding what Apple calls Sites and what Apache calls virtual hosts.

  • How does OEM monitor the weblogic domain

    Hi Guys,
I would like to know how does the OEM monitor the weblogic domain, i.e where does the em agent (in the target host) check to determine if the weblogic domain is up or down ?
    - Does OEM fetch data regarding managed server from admin server ?
    - Does managed servers show up in OEM if the admin server console is down but the managed server is up ? (i think it does show up, even if the admin is down but then how/where does it get to know the status)
    - Is there any settings in the weblogic to be set ?
    - Does the behavior of weblogic EM console and the OEM grid console are same ?
Basically want to understand, how and what all needs to check when the domain is showing down in OEM (when domain is up and running in weblogic console and the agent is perfectly fine)
Similarly for the Database how does it check the status "up or down"
    - does it try to make a connection to the db ?
    - if so where do we give the details for the db connection user and password ?
Please help me in understanding these.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Harish

If the targets are actually up and showing down in OEM console , so it means something wrong with the configuration .
Can you check the error message in the console , why it is down ? Or you can also check agent logs on the target server.
To monitor the weblogic , it uses username used during the configuration.
Please check the picture at below link :
    Discovering Middleware Targets
Enter the WebLogic Administration Server user name and password. If you want to discover the target only for monitoring purposes, then it is sufficient to provide a user name that has a monitoring role. If you want to monitor the target and also perform start/stop operations, then ensure that you provide a user name that has either an operator role or an administrator role.Note: There is the potential of account locking issues if you enter the default WebLogic user name, and the account password is changed without updating the Enterprise Manager monitoring credentials for the Domain and Farm.

If you do not have the iPhone, does that mean it has been lost or stolen?  The only good the IMEI number will do in that case is to notify the carrier and see if they can blacklist the iPhone so it cannot be used.  Or, to file an insurance claim.  You cannot search or track based on the IMEI number.
