How does FCP Pro X manage free frames?

I see that adding a freeze frame has been restored in v10.1.2 - I wonder what happened there?
Now that the menu entry is back again I have created a freeze frame.  FCP assumes that I want to use it where it is in the timeline - freezing the action.  I guess some people might want to do that - but I want to use it elsewhere in the project, which means moving the clip out of the storyline, deleting the partial clip created when the original clip was sliced to create the freeze frame and then extending the original clip back to full size.  Geez, these developers sure know how to create a lot of extra work - it would be nice if FCP just created a new clip in the browser.
But what exactly is this new clip?  It seems to exist only in the timeline.  It has no individual name, I cannot favourite it or add a keyword.  Perhaps I have to create a new compound clip?  I am assembling a batch of stills (maybe 50-60) from my footage to use at the end of the film - it seems that this will require an awful lot of work if I have to do all these steps for every freeze frame I create.
I can't easily do it from the browser either - because there is a lot of material in the browser than there is in the timeline and it is not sequenced the same way.
Workflow?
1.     Locate the clip in the timeline, press Option F
2.     Move the new clip out of the timeline
3.     Delete the partial clip on one side of the gap created by moving the new freeze frame clip out of the timeline
4.     Extend the clip to its former length
5.     Select the new clip and make a new compound clip
6.     Assign keywords
7.     Repeat for each freeze-frame.
I can see I am not on the same planet as the people who built this software...  Does anyone know an easier way to achieve this?
Stephen
ps: did anyone else notice that the Add Freeze Frame (Option F) menu item was missing and has now returned?

Thanks for that  - that's much better.
Perhaps I have an old copy of the manual - I will check.  This is what the manual says - and this produces an inline freeze frame:
Create freeze frames
You can easily create freeze-frame clips from any video clip. Freeze-frame clips hold a particular frame in place, temporarily stopping the action onscreen.
You can create freeze-frame clips from clips in the Timeline or the Browser. If you create a freeze- frame clip from the Browser, it is attached to the primary storyline at the playhead location as a connected clip.
You can create freeze frames on the fly during playback or by navigating to a specific frame in a clip.
Note: A freeze-frame clip preserves any attributes that were applied to the source clip, such as settings and effects.
Create a freeze-frame clip
1 In the Timeline or the Browser, do one of the following:
Move the skimmer or playhead to the frame you want to freeze.
Begin playback of the clip.
2 Choose Edit > Add Freeze Frame (or press Option-F).
How the freeze frame is added to the project depends on whether the freeze frame was created
from the Timeline or the Browser.
If you created the freeze frame from a clip in the Timeline: A new freeze-frame clip is inserted at the skimmer or playhead location in the Timeline.
If you created the freeze frame from a clip in the Browser: A new freeze-frame clip is attached as a connected clip at the playhead location in the Timeline.
Change the default duration of freeze-frame clips
Freeze-frame clips have the same default duration as still-image clips: 4 seconds. You can change the default duration in Final Cut Pro preferences.
1  Choose Final Cut Pro > Preferences (or press Command-Comma), and click the Editing button at the top of the window.
2  Adjust the Still Images value slider.
If you don’t want to create a separate clip for freeze frames, you can create a hold segment using the Retime pop-up menu. For more information, see Create a hold segment on page 300.

  • How does FCP Pro X handle mixed frame rate video clips?

My camcorders are by Canon and both can shoot 50i or 25p. Normally I shoot 25p to avoid interlace artefacts. As I understand it, FCP Pro X conforms the clips to match the initial clip in the storyline. But what would be the outcome if I included clips from another camcorder that only offered 30p? Would those clips be converted to 25p if the initial clip was 25p. Or, would the 25p clips be converted to 30p if the initial clip was 30p?
Assuming I made a movie entirely out 30p footage, would that be uploaded to You-Tube at that frame rate?  If my movie is 25p is that converted to 30p for You-Tube upload? Could I otherwise export a QT movie to my desktop at 30 fps or any other frame rate?
It seems that the 25p setting on my camcorders still means that the recording is made as 50i but repackaged somehow. Can anyone explain please?
Yes, I am in the UK in a PAL environment.
    AW.

But what would be the outcome if I included clips from another camcorder that only offered 30p? Would those clips be converted to 25p if the initial clip was 25p. Or, would the 25p clips be converted to 30p if the initial clip was 30p?
Subsequent clips will be converted to match the project settings created by the first clip into the timeline. I don't know how well FCP does this timebase conversion from NTSC to PAL frame rates or vice versa. Compressor would probably do a better job. There is also Standard Conversion software from Graeme Nattress that will do an excellent job.
YouTube will take either. You would need to use Compressor to change the frame rate on export, though you don't want to do that unless you absolutely have to.
Most consumer cameras do not actually shoot 25 separate frames when they're set to 25p. They shoot what's called segmented frames, two fields just as the 50i setting, only the two fields are supposed to be identical. That's the theory; in practice some cameras do this better than others.

  • How does FCP handle 23.98 DV Files?

    Hi All,
Has anyone Edited using the DV-NTSC 24P (23.98fps) Easy Setup?
    1) How does FCP handle this video connected to a DV Converter Box like the Canopus ADVC-110?
    2) Does it actually play at 23.98fps on a monitor connected to the DV Converter Box?
    3) Does it get converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it gets displayed?
    4) is it displayed at 29.97fps or is it really being displayed at 23.98fps?
these are things that I am not sure of.
sorry if I posted this message a couple of times. I didn't know that hitting the "Tab" Button posts the message, I thought it would just function like the Tab in a normal Text editor and indent a line. But here it doesn't.
    thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for the feed back. I guess I should fill in the caps a little.
    *DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:*
One of our main Clients Disney, is migrating to a Tapeless Workflow based on ProRes HQ 422 @ 23.98fps. From here on out, they will only send us ProRes HQ 422 1920x1080 files @ 23.98fps and they want us to Edit every project we work on for them @ 23.98fps. At the moment, it doesn't sound like they care if we Edit our projects in ProRes HD or some SD format, but the important thing to them is that we edit @ 23.98fps.
    PROBLEM:
Our facility doesn't have the infrastructure to support 25 machines accessing ProRes HQ 422 files. Our facility was built to support DV NTSC @ 29.97fps and we have been working this way fairly well, for a number of years.
    SOLUTION:
I am trying to find a way to continue to us our current equipment and satisfy Disney's request to work on all their projects at 23.98fps, starting from 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 422 files @ 23.98fps. So, it was my hope to be able to take the 23.98fps ProRes files and export them to 23.98fps DV NTSC. This way we wouldn't have to reconfigure our entire Facility (which would cost a couple hundred Thousand dollars).
    My approach was to:
    1) Use Media Manager to render a new DV NTSC file at 23.98fps, which it does pretty well for the most part. It keeps the Timecode consistent between the two files (very important), but doesn't allow you to Letterbox the 16x9 video in the 4x3 frame, it just stretches it to fill the entire 4x3 frame (not so good).
    2) Then import the newly created DV NTSC 23.98fps file into a FCP Project based on the DV NTSC 24(p) 23.98fps EASY SETUP. Which works well. No problems there.
    3) Then Play the file in FCP out through a Firewire based Canopus ADVC-110 DV Converter connected to a SD Sony Monitor. This seemed to worked fine also.
The fact that it plays is great!!!! But, that brings up the question, is it really playing a 23.98fps?
My understanding of Standard Definition and specifically DV NTSC, is that it can only be displayed at 29.97fps, it doesn't support 23.98fps natively. So the fact that it played when I tested it got me thinking that I may be missing something here and DV NTSC and other SD equipment (like the Sony SD Monitor) can playback/support 23.98fps SD video. But that goes against everything I know up to this point!!!
Have I been wrong all this time?
    1) Can SD Video and DV NTSC Video be displayed at 23.98fps?
    2) Or is it getting converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it is getting displayed?
    3) If it is getting converted back to 29.97fps, then where is it getting converted, FCP or in the DV Converter Box?
I am sorry I went a little long on this email, but it is a problem that will have great influence on they way we work for a couple of years to come!!
    Thanks for your input!!

  • Does FCP-X have arrow and frame generators?

I'm considering moving from FCP 5 to FCP-X, but I want to be sure that FCP-X can do the things I'm doing every day in FCP-5.
I do tutorial videos. In these tutorials I point out and emphasize a lot of things using arrows and frames of various shapes (circles, squares, rectangles, ovals, etc.).
In FCP-5 I have the Stibb's Arrow Generator plugin. This video generator can create an arrow of any thickness or length, with a choice of head or tail styles. I can click on a start point and an end point for an arrow, and move these points around. With this generator it only takes me a few seconds to create an arrow of the required length and thickness to point out something on the screen.
I can "animate" one of these arrows by simply revealing it with an edge wipe. The edge wipe makes the arrow appear to stretch out to point at something.
FCP-5 can also generate frames of various types. I most often create circles around things that I want to draw attention to. I can "animate" a circular frame by revealing it with a clock wipe, which makes the circle appear to draw itself.
I use these arrows and frames all the time. My question is, are there equivalent video generators in FCP-X?

I must be going nuts. I just realized that I already asked this question here about a month ago. But I can't see any way to delete this question, so I'll just add this note to it. Sorry about that, and I appreciate the answers I got earlier, which seem to have boiled down to buying a suite of special callout effects from Ripple for $50. Or else creating something in Motion, which is another program I'm not very competent with, having only watched some video tutorials of it (by Larry Jordan, I think). That Stibbs arrow generator in FCP 5 was so simple and elegant, and it was free.
I've been in the Adobe Premiere Pro forums asking the same questions, and all they can do is refer me to After Effects to create arrows and frames. Well, I do have Adobe CS6 and After Effects, and I've been trying my best to learn to create arrows and circles in Premiere Pro with it, and so far I just can't figure it out. AE is a complex program, and many of the procedures just skid right off my elderly, hardened-up brain.
Besides, Premiere Pro doesn't seem to be able to do the things I've always done with FCP, which is why I'm considering buying FCP-X instead.  It's tough to teach an old dog new tricks. And Premiere seems to be buggy. A test video I tried to make with it locked up after I made several ripple edits on the timeline. Its "Canvas" just froze and stopped showing the edits. Phooey on Premiere. Other people have complained about all the bugs in it on the Mac. Plus it has pathetically few video transitions for the Mac (the PC vewrsion seems to have gotten all the goodies).
But Using After Effects to quickly create simple arrow of variable length and thickness seems like using a sledgehammer to squash an ant. The same goes for Motion in FCP X. There has to be an easier way, such as a simple generator of the Stibbs type.
So, I guess I'll get the Ripple generator for call-outs in FCP-X and see what it can do, as some have suggested. If anyone has any new ideas, I'd love to hear them.

  • How does Macbook Pro compare to G4/800 Powermac

I currently have a G4/800 Quicksilver Powermac with 1Gb of memory, two 7200rpm hard drives, and a ATI RAdeon 7500 GPU with 32Mb of RAM.
I mainly use my computer for amateur photograph editing (Photoshop elements) and video-editing (imovie and Final cut express), and I play the occasional game (older games like wolfenstein, medal of honor, warcraft 3). I've read a lot on this forum about how crappy the GMA in the macbook is, but to give me an idea, how does it compare to my equally crappy ATI radeon 7500 ? Would the macbook be ok to play games like C&C generals, Homeworld 2 and other 3D strategy games ? I like the occasional 3D shooter but I don't need the graphical splendour of Quake 4. And I've read that Final Cut pro has some issues with the macbook but I suppose Final cut express would be ok ?
How would the 2Gh Macbook compare to my G4 Quicksilver speedwise overall (I would max out the ram in the macbook) ?
    G4/800 QS - G3/400 Pismo PB Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    G4/800 QS - G3/400 Pismo PB Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I dunno your asking a MBP question in the MacBook
    forum.
Try asking in the correct forum.
If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that the MBP
would be faster then the QS on all accounts even when
running photoshop (which would run under rosetta).
The G4 has faster drives going for it, but overall
the MBP specs are superior to the g4 so my vote is
that yuor going to see an improvement. The only
suggestion I'd give is boost the ram to at least a
gig and your doing a lot of photoshop work, then get
    1.5 to 2.0 gig.
    Mike
Sorry, I actually meant the Macbook.

  • Does FCP Pro X edit to tape?

I looked for edit to tape but cant find anything..

I think Apple is betting that they will be the future, and the path there is by taking risks and changing standards that, in the present, still work for a lot of people. It is a small gamble. Personally, I love that they are full of that kind of energy, even though occasionally it leads off into Mobileme land.
The question is, will the present industry pros gamble on Apple or on another company? Will the industry standard become where Apple is going, with the cloud, no DVDs, no tape, or will it stay the same? I doubt Rod Serling would be able to predict where this is all going...Today newspapers are dying, tomorrow tv stations will be web based, heck it is all coming from one little cable.
In a way, it would be a good thing if some Outer Limits bizarre plan was at the core of it all...at least we would be on the menu.

  • Does FCP assume interlaced video if frame size happens to coincide with PAL?

I have a QuickTime MOV file that has a frame size of 720x576, at 25 fps. It's actually a series of full-frame JPEG images, so it's progressive video.
When I add it to the timeline in FCP-X, it shows up as PAL 25i - ie. FCP thinks it's interlaced.
My timeline is PAL 25p, so the source video is being de-interlaced by FCP when it shouldn't be, which is leading to image quality degredation.
Is there any way to stop FCP from assuming this progressive video is interlaced?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi,
MJPEG is simply a series of JPEG images. If you pull one apart in a hex editor, look for the bytes that start with 0xFFD8 - this is the JPEG Start-of-Image marker. Extract that section, until the following JPEG End-of-Image marker (0xFFD9), save it as a file, give it a .JPG extension  and voila, a fully standards compliant JPEG image.
Images I know about - it's video that's foxing me!
The incoming video is an arbitrary size - I could make it 512x512 for example. If I do that, and leave everything else the same, FCP treats it as *progressive*. It's only the 720 x 576 file that FCP is *assuming* to be interlaced.
    Here: a 512x512 mjpeg.
On the timeline - note, FCP does *not* assume it's interlaced this time:
I know the 720x576 file isn't interlaced: it's a series of full frame images.
So: any ideas how I tell FCP to stop treating the input as interlaced?
(Many thanks for your assistance by the way, it is appreciated.)

  • How does Mac Pro compare to iMac?

    Ok I'm Pisssed!
I just bought a mac pro with AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB to photo editing. I noticed that it's a bit sluggish with my 4k Dell monitor. I figured what I can do I already have the best mac there is guess I'll have to live with it.
And then BAM, the new iMac comes out with AMD Radeon R9 M295X. Will it perform better with photo editing?

    Actually you are wrong.
You can change CPU in mac pro, but you cannot fit inside anything better or newer as you are limited to specific TDP and chipset. For instance, putting in new generation of xeon won't give you TB3 support and so on. It can also lead to instability of the system overall. So in basic words: you shouldn't change CPU you already have inside so no CPU upgrade there as well.
Also iMac is much better in single core performance than mac pro and 99% of applications don't use more than 2 cores and even if they do those actions are not so critical (rendering where you can wait or go get one coffee meantime,...) compared to for instance 3D modelling or animation, where you need smooth rendering and good CPU real-time computation.
Also new radeon R9 M290X and M295X is much better supported from AMD side and also in windows. We all know OS X 3D performance is miserable compared to windows and having one year old drivers for mac pro GPU's (13.25 version) compared to newest radeon drivers (14.9).
In addition to all, 4K monitors are very poorly supported on mac pro. For example sometimes when I start OS X half of the screen remains black on my dell UP2414Q and only solution is to restart my computer again. Dell says that they haven't tested with apple hardware and it should be apple to fix this while apple says dell should fix it while customers remain in the dark and with poor support. Thank you dell and apple.
And there is more bad news for apple: adobe has started to shift their support to nvidia and windows system as Illustrator CC2014.2 now supports hardware accelerated graphics rendering with nvidia GPU on windows! And even more, new GTX980 beats any AMD cards on the market and AMD probably won't make anything better because they can't. I never understood apple latest fascination with AMD. AMD is the worst company for GPU's and their support is so bad I'm considering selling my mac pro.
The release of new iMac with 5K was a big slap in the face of professional apple customers who paid big money for their pro machine which can only run final cut pro X in it's full power. Any other software is unable to utilize all that "power" that apple put into mac pro. It's a big shame and a good waste of money to have just a nice room warmer.
Instead of fixing old things apple went and made new version of consumer class PC that is better or at least equivalent to pro class PC's the sell.
What apple need to fix is:
-10-bit support for displays. I don't know why we throw so much money on good displays when computer only outputs 8bit at the end.
-drop AMD and pick up nvidia cards. Apple already supports openCL 1.2 with nvidia cards under OS X and nvidia offers physX and CUDA in addition to only openCL that AMD offers. Also nvidia drivers are much more stable and performance of nvidia cards is better in all aspects.
-give more support to developers like adobe and others to upgrade their software to take advantage of GPU's we throw so much money on. What good is it to have a good computer and then software that can't even use that computer in it full potential except only few operations while majority of operations are still slow and laggy.
-give better support for 3D under OS X. Right now I'm watching like 9-30 FPS in Maya and Unity, and sometimes I even run some games to free my mind. WoW hardly reaches 60FPS on low settings while under windows bootcamp on same hardware I can get easily 60FPS! OS X still only has openGL 4.1, while we have there 4.3 and 4.4 GPU's out.
There has been almost one year since the release of this mac pro and nothing pretty much changed. This "pro" computer is actually pretty slow compared to what competition offers and the only good thing on mac is now the friendliness of OS X, stability and good integration with everything which windows lacks. But overall it's a very slow system to work on. Apple promised much but we got nothing of it except high price tag and a lot of lost nerves!
I'm very very disappointed in apple right now and really considering switching back to normal PC where at least I get latest drivers for everything and things at least runs at normal frame rate I can work with.
And don't even let me start on new Yosemite "flat" look which they obviously copied from windows and it is ugly as ****. Instead of changing icons they should fix old mac problems and give us professionals more to work with. In reality we get slapped and pushed on the edge. Don't try and make professional multimedia computer if you can't support it!

  • How does the SecureMind Surveillance Manager work?

Is there someone who can explain to me how the SecureMind Surveillance Manager works when installed on an ix2?
I am looking in the share and it has a .jpg file matched with .nrv files. Does this program record video with audio and if the .nrv files are the video/audio how do I view?

I am sorry, I did not read your reply thoroughly, but I recognize it from one of the online manuals I looked at.
Because I couldn't figure it out and when the phone technical support couldn't figure it out after remote assisting to troubleshoot and the feature seemed to stop working that day compared to at least having an image of what my camera was viewing; they are sending a replacement where they say I should be able to install up to Lifline 4.01 again but I wouldn't. If the Lifeline that it comes with works with the only 2 other extra features I am interested in using(torrent, cam surveillance) then I should probably not mess with it by upgrading regardless of the system recommendations as I don't see what the difference would be between a recently purchased product and one sent directly from Lenovo.
Of course I will have to look at the changes between the upgrades of Lifelines to choose exactly what is essential and maybe I will call in to have help on choosing which Lifeline upgrade is proven to work etc.
The imagers they sent me would not work with my USB drives so I think there may be some problems that need to be addressed or perhaps the desktop storage devices aren't a big seller and lack the attention that they require to have smooth operation by consumers.
I am very happy of the price though . While packing it getting it ready to ship for when the replacement arrives I couldn't see the RAM. Is that in any way upgradeable or is it soldered to the board?

I have the white paper explaining how Grid Control discovers databases, listeners, application servers, etc. But I am not able to find a paper that tells how the Application Manager discovers the Oracle applications. Does anyone know of such a paper or which perl scripts are run?

One of the biggest problems I have run into when doing these discoveries is that the agent and iAS and/or Oracle are owned by different users and the agent does not have permissions to read the configuration files.
You situation may be a bit different.
If the host is real busy, it sometimes takes a long time to load the gathered information into the repository. From looking at your log file, this may be your issue.
How busy is the server(s) and database for you OMS and OEM database?

I am looking to modify my coding practices to minimize RAM usage.
I follow the "Labview 101" do's and don't for optimised code but I need more information about how the VI's are handled in memory.
My background is in embedded C coding where when a function is called the code is run from ROM and uses memory from the stack, releasing it on completion.
My observations (best quess) from my cFP application is that all vi's are unpacked (decompressed) into RAM (takes 5-10 minutes) and executed is from there.  Each .VI keeps it's memory.
My application uses quite a lot of code reading configurations at the start, never to be used again.  I am speculating that this resides in RAM until the end of time.
If this is the case, is there a method to release the unwanted VI from memory.
To minimise RAM usage I tend to use In Place structures and wire data in and out of VI's using it.
Attached code snippet show data from an object being passed through a sub .VI.
I want to be sure that additional RAM isn't being used here,  If so I will need to do the manipulation directly to the object.

    tst,
    Thanks for the links.
The array allocation is a bit of an eye opener, I will think carefully about how I use arrays.
I have seen the OOP one before, re-reading it was helpful.
I found a few hints about default data.
It does illude to once all vi's (not dynamicaly loaded) are loaded into memory and stay there, required or not.
In the case of dynamic allocation, this makes sense for a transient object, in my case the objects hand aroung, about half of the methods are only called at startup, Squatting on memory without further need.
I can think of an ugly workaround where a "Read Config" VI is dynamicaly loaded, Hands off it's data to a more permanent object before being dumped.
I would like to know more about the deallocate memory VI, Does it Dump RAM and Program or just RAM?
Does it apply to LVOOP Methods?

  • How does Apex access and manage db objects in other schemas?

I'm looking for a description of how Apex accesses and manages database objects in other schemas.
I'm sure I've seen such a description somewhere earlier but am unable to find it again...

    Hi Rene,
When you are connected to sqlworkshop, it is basically connected to the sceham owner of the workspace. If you execute the query
select sys_context( 'userenv', 'current_schema' ), user,  username from user_users;you would see the schema and user(currently connected) and schema owner through which you have logged in. The user will have all the privileges granted to schema owner. So basically you get connected through APEX_PUBLIC_USER and it has all the privileges of the schema owner.
    In order to run scripts in another schema you would need grants on other schema same like you are connected to user A through sqlplus and wants to create objects in schema B. For example lets say you want to create a table in schema B and you have create table privileges in scehma B , you can execute command create table B.emp as select * from A.emp;
I hope this answers your question.

  • How does the "Windows 10 is free for its 1st year" offering affect licensing for enterprise customers paying Software Assurance?

At the keynote on 21 January 2015, there was an announcement that Windows 10 was going to be a free upgrade for the first year of its release.
As an enterprise customer,  I'd like to know about the impact of this announcement on Software Assurance. How is the cost of Windows changing for the enterprise?

To sum it up SUBSCRIPTION FEE. for each computer in your enterprise this make more sense then what we have seen in the years. In sales we are starting to see free one year software, that requires to sign up for that free one year use, I am certain this

You are entitled to your opinion, that doesn't make it correct.
Personally, I'll go with Ed Bott since he has a much closer relationship
    with Microsoft than you do:

perpetual license that's good for the supported life of the PC, and there's
no plan at this time to offer Windows as a subscription."
