How does iPhoto Save photos from multiple Cameras

I have had a Mac for about 18 months. I have a Canon Digital Elph 410. Because I had only photos from this one camera I never have worried about naming. So all my photos are sequentially numbered IMG_0031, IMG_0032 etc. This last weekend, for a big trip, I purchased a Panasonic with a zoom lens. I also have on order a replacement for my Elph, a Canon SD630.
How will iPhoto distinguish between the similarly numbered photos from different cameras? The Panasonic may have a different numbering scheme, but the newer Elph is likely to come up with identical numbers as my old Elph. I know enough that when iPhoto asks me to replace I will say no. But how will I get the newer photos of the same serial number onto my iMac without erasing the old photos? Does iPhoto have a way---opaque to the user---of distinguishing between these two sets of photos based on the day they were shot?
Thanks.

Importing shouldn't be a problem, iPhoto will figure it out and nothing will get deleted.
You can have multiple files with the same "title" in iPhoto. The title is what you see in iPhoto, not the actual filename of the file stored on the disk, though the two are usually identical upon import.
For iPhoto5, it works like this:
1) If two different photos with the same name and date are imported, the second gets a "_1" appended to its filename on the disk but the titles you see in iPhoto will still be identical to the original filename.
2) If two photos with the same name but different dates are imported, they are stored in different folders in the iPhoto database so no "_1" is appended and, again, the titles you see in iPhoto will be the same.
3) If the photos are identical, a dialog box will pop up to ask you what to do. You can apparently import the same photo more than once.
iPhoto6 has a different directory structure on the disk so (2) may not apply. In any case, there shoudn't be a problem.

I'm sorry, but are you referring to another app other than the native Messages App? I'm thinking that is what you are referring to, since I'm not aware of any setting like that in the native Messages app. If that is the case, it could be that you do not have Messages set to access the Camera Roll in Privacy. The app may not have access to the Camera Roll. Check that in Settings>Privacy and see if the Messages app is listed there. I'm guessing that you are referring to Facebook Messenger?

  • How do you save photos from import or Photo Stream to an album?

How do you save photos from import or photo stream to an album?  I have a MacBook Air (which keeps telling me my start-up disk is full) and I am trying to organize photos so there aren't duplicates and triples.  I have photos in events, last import, photos and albums....I feel like they are all taking up space.  If I move a photo from photo stream to an album, then delete the photo from photo steam its deleted from the album.  That doesn't make sense to me.  There should be a way to clean up photo stream, and events, and last import by putting photos into albums.  Even more bizarre; I imported photos from my 4S, and only a fraction of them transferred over.
I am completely lost.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

and I am trying to organize photos so there aren't duplicates and triples.  I have photos in events, last import, photos and albums....I feel like they are all taking up space.
    Sarah,
Only the photos you are seeing in the events and the Photo Stream will take up space. iPhoto stores each photo only one. After you import it, it will be assigned to one event.
Then you can use it in many albums and projects. Using the photo this way will only reference the one single copy of the photo in the event. The albums don't store the photos and do not require additional space. If you delete a photo from an event, it will be removed from all albums that have been using the this photos.
What you are seing are not actually duplicate photos but different ways to access the same photos.
The "Last event" is the same event as the last one you imported. It is there for a quick access to your recently imported photos.  Photos is a quick access to all photos in your library as an endless stream of photos. These are also no duplicates.
So if you want to save space and delete photos, do that by browsing your events. Deleting a photo from an event will delete the original image file and remove the photo from all albums, books, and other products. You have only duplicate photos, if you are seing the same photo twice in an event.
Even more bizarre; I imported photos from my 4S, and only a fraction of them transferred over.
That is a different problem, but it may be related to to fact that you need to free space.
If you get a warning, that the system needs space, don't do anything but update the backup of your mac and move files to an external disk to free space.
It is not save to keep working, when the system is running out of space.
How much free space do you have? Anything below 15GB free space is really critical.

  • HT4910 How do i get photos from my Camera Roll into my Photo Stream?

How do i get photos from my Camera Roll into my Photo Stream? It seems it is supposed to do it automatically , but it does not.

Photos are normally uploaded automatically as long as you are connected to wifi, have the camera app closed and have at least 20% battery life remaining.  (It doesn't require a manual iCloud backup first.)
If yours are working, if you haven't already done so, try turning off photo stream, then turn it back on.
Sometimes people have issues getting photo stream to work on their home wifi, even if other devices in the home seem to work fine.  To troubleshoot this as a possible cause, some things to try include:
Power-cycling your router (unplug for 15 seconds, then plug back in), then go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Reset Network Settings, then rejoin your wifi network.
See if there is a firmware update available for your router.
Change the DNS settings in your router to Google's Public DNS (see https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using)
As a diagnostic step, go to a public wifi hotspot and take a photo, then wait a minute or so to see if it appears in your My Photo Stream album on your phone.  If it does, this confirms that the problem is with your home wifi.

  • How do I save photos from email to the photo library?

How do I save photos from email to the photo library? I've seen an online demo of users that hold their finger or thumb over the image for a few seconds and a "save photo" window option appears. That doesn't work on my 6-month old iphone. It's version 1.1.4 (4a102) ???? Help! Anybody with an answer?

Never mind. I figured out the 2.0 update. My system wasn't updating I-tunes...and the I-phone update option window was hidden behind some other system information. I figured it out. The download, install and re-synch took about an hour. Lots of horror stories out there about people trying to activate their new I-phones. Glad this worked for me!

How can I copy photos from the camera roll to an already existing album in ipad?

If you are in thumbnail view in the Camera Roll, tap the Edit button in the upper right corner. Tap the photos that you want to add to the existing album. Tap - Add To - in the upper right corner and then tap - Existing Album.
You can only add camera roll photos to albums that you have created on the iPad. You cannot add them to albums that you synced from iTunes.

when i import photos from my camera they save in the iphoto section but how do I then save those as jpeg files so that i can upload them to emails or to kodal gallery etc.

Another easy method if you're only dealing with a small number of photos, just drag the best shots from  iPhoto to the desktop.  Then they're easy to find for uploads.  Delete off the desktop when your done.  (they're still in iPhoto).

You can drag a photo from the email window onto the Album in the left hand pane of iPhoto and it will be added to that Album.  The photo will be in its own Event but will also be in the Album you dragged it to.

  • IPhoto downloading photos from the camera

Hi, is there any possibility to name the photo data other IMG_0001....whenever I import Photos from the camera, they are named with the same data and I have now about 20 photos named IMG_0001 and so on. I can give them a title but I want to change the name of the document and don't know how. Is there a way to name the photos before I import them from the camera?
    Thank you for your help
    Nicole

I tried to follow you trick, but it always open iphoto, as soon as I plug in the cord to import pictures.
So, quit iPhoto and launch Image Capture (in your Applications Folder). You Applications Folder is on your Hard Drive. It's where all your applications live. Or search for it with Spotlight.
And it is a lot of work to rename them all after importing. So it would be a huge help , if I could rename them before importing to iphoto.
It's exactly the same amount of work adding a title after you import as it is renaming files before hand. Use the Photos -> Batch Change command.

  • HT2498 How do I import photos from my camera without being forced to use any silly mac software?

I haev a PC as well as a new Mac Mini.
It has always bugged me that Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera when i plug it in.
On my PC (windows 7) it simply recognizes it as a "removable storage device" and i can access the flash memory as if it was a hard drive and simply drag my photos to a folder on my computer. (this same technique works with my iphone photos)
However on my Mac it seems there is no way to open up the flash memory and just drag photos off and manually import and manage my photos. I do not like all of the complicated software to complete a simple task like this.
Am i missing something? if so please fill me in. thanks!

Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera
It does not force you to do that.
Open iPhoto, go to iPhoto / Preferences and change the setting so no application opens when the camera is connected.
Whether you change the setting or not, the camera does indeed appear as a "removable storage device". At least mine does:
And you can double click the camera icon and navigate the contents. The contents are shown exactly as they would be on any "storage device":
Thus you have the option in iPhoto preferences to let it do it for you, or do it yourself if that is your choice.

  • How do I purchase photos from multiple events?

I want to purchase about 10 photos from multiple events. I can't seem to figure out how to make that happen so I am not spending 2.99 shipping for 2-3 photos from each event. How do you cluster them all for one shipping fee?
    Thanks

Make an album, drag the pics to that Album and use that for purchase.

  • How do I delete photos from my Camera roll in iOS 7

I have over 1,000 photos in my iPhone Camera Roll.  I would like to delete all the photos in the Camera Roll.  How do I do this efficiently in iOS 7?

    Hi mikeschumann,
Of course you can delete photos from your Camera Roll:
Go into your photos app and select the Camera Roll album
Click on Select at the top right of the screen
Select the photos you want to delete
Click on the Trash can at the bottom of the screen
Just remember, if you have not imported those photos into a photo app on a computer, they will be permanently deleted. You may have them on an iCloud backup, but each backup you do has only the image of the current state of your device. So, if the 1000 photos have been backed up in the last iCloud backup you do, then you delete them, and do another iCloud backup, that backup will not have those photos. Then, say, you take another 100 new photos, and back up to iCloud. That backup will have the most recent 100 photos, but not the 1000 previously backed up.
So, your best bet is to import them to your photo app on your computer, and then select delete photos from device when asked.
    Cheers,
