How good is the camera - honestly!

The new iphone 3Gs has a 3mp camera. This isnt many pixels really when cameras are now around 12mp.
What are your views on this?

If there is a cell phone with a 12MP camera, what a waste someone is paying a premium for nothing since the camera lens is not good enough for this along with the camera having a fixed lens with a digital zoom only.
My 3G with a 2MP camera captures pretty good photos in good light conditions, which is what a cell phone camera is for. If you want to capture the best quality photos, that is what a dedicated camera is designed and intended for.
As already provided, do a Google search for Megapixel Myth.

How good is the 3G arial on the iPad? For example is it better than the iPhone 4 one?

I'm using the IGP on 2 networked pc's and to be honest have had no problems with it. Runs all my games at ease inc the network games, (some are very power hungry too). Ok not as fast as the latest all singing cards but costs you nothing. You can always stick another card in if you get problems. One thing though, gotta make sure you make use of the Dual channel memory, this really speeds things up with the IGP in use.

  • N73 how to make the camera MUTE (no click sound)??...

I want to know how to make the camera without any sound during taking the picture in NOKIA N73 music edition.
please tell me as soon as possible
    Thank u

Typical for discussion forum, the experts to give usless advice( ie "try silent mode") folowed by " its a privacy issue".
I am unable to mute the camera on my E71.  I also assumed it was a legal issue.  Recently a friend of mine, showed me the Iphone 3Gs take a picture silently.  Silent photography with a cell phone is possible.
This looks like something for a symbian upgrade or even a third party camera app.
Send your camera upgrade request to Nokia, cross your fingers.

  • How good is the audio jack?

In the past I've connected my iPod to my stereo using a mini to RCA adapter. It gave me a weak signal (even with the volume turned all the way up). How good is the Mac Mini's audio when plugging into a stereo? Thanks.

Optical out to a DAC supports 24-bit (and even 32-bit on the new mini, whatever that is for, I guess DSP). It shares the analogue headphone jack out, but when you put a mini Toslink in it, you get the light out.
You can also use USB out or use a USB/coax converter (which I am messing around with). Others have told me that the USB/coax converter is better because it externally clocks the signal, but I cannot hear any difference between that and the optical out. Optical goes up to 96kHz sampling frequency. To get higher, you need the USB/coax adapter.
The NOVA that I have, linked to above, supports 16-bit output from USB and 24-bit output from optical toslink and coax. I think the USB limitation might be imposed by the software in the DAC, however, not at the mac end.

  • How good is the Stock Cooler

    Hi ppl.
As u prob know I am building a PC for my friend. It will be a AMD 64 3200
My question is if I bought the retails then how good is the cooler? Also will it come with a Thermal Pad
If I bought the retail could I scrap off the Pad and used Thermal Paste Supplied with my Zalman 7000Al/Cu as this isnt silver based. Would this boid the warrenty.
Or I would buy the OEM version and get a Thermaltake Silent Boost along with Artic Silver 3.
Wot would u guys do because u get a warrenty with the one and not with the other. I think the Silent Boost would be a much better option for cooling.
My friend will be doin now otherclocking but wants a stable cool running system without being very loud (so no TORNADOS lol)
    Cheers

what does cool n quiet do exactly?
i enabled it in my BIOS and i dont notice any difference,
    i have a SLK948U with a Panaflo L 80mm
You need to have your fan plugged into the motherboard CPU fan header for it to reduce fan speed, I guess you don't with that fan as it draws too much current.
Oh and even if you are going to Overclock you will find the stock cooler is actually fine for mild overclocks of a couple of hundred mhz, I tried it with my Clawhammer and got it to 2200 mhz with 41 deg idle and 48 deg under load, temps that are fine in my opinion.

  • How good is the iPod Touch Upgrade?

How good is the iPod touch upgrade? is it really worth it? should i upgrade? or should i wait for the sdk to come out and then upgrade?
And are there any safety/security features for safari? to protect your ipod touch from hacks and viruses?

There were some Mac viruses in the past (like 10 years ago), but none for OS X.
Sophos provides a list of Mac viruses here. Almost all are from the late 1980's and early 1990's. The most recent one being June 1998 - and all of them affecting Mac OS 7, 8 or 9 - none for Mac OS X
Virus software on the Mac mainly detects and protects against passing on Windows viruses, which do nothing on a Mac.
In fact, Virus protection software on the Mac is a bit of a scam, as there's none to protect against.
A couple of 'proof-of-concept' viruses were demonstrated for OS X but never released, and as I said, there's not a single virus in the wild that affects current shipping versions of OS X.
    Not a single one.

  • How good is the Airport Express inbuilt Digital to Analogue converter?

How good is the Airport Express inbuilt Digital to Analogue converter?
I have just purchased a 2012 dual band Airport Express which has the combined optical/3.5mm analogue jack audio output.
This is to connect to my hifi seperate amplifier, which does not have an optical input.
This gives me a couple of options
    a) just use a standard 3.5mm jack to phono cable (and use the built in DAC in the airpor express)
    or
    b) purchase a seperate DAC to convert the optical from the Express into phono and connect that to the amplifier
I will be sending 250-320kbps music to the airport express wirelessly.
Will I see much/any benefit in sound quality with option B vs option A?
I ask because option A is free (I already have the cable) and option B will be around £20-£30 depending on which DAC I were to buy (I would also need a new TOSlink optical cable).
These are the sort of DACs I was looking at.
    Thanks, Chipstix

How good is the Airport Express inbuilt Digital to Analogue converter?
Please check out this stereophile article on the earlier AirPort Express. I understand that the newest version may use basically similar audio hardware.
I will be sending 250-320kbps music to the airport express wirelessly.
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) works only with iTunes v4.6+ and is limited to music files that iTunes can read; ie, 16-bit data only. (An exception is you can use a third-party product like Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil to stream other non-iTunes sources.) These data, though, can be in any file format that iTunes recognizes, from lossy MP3s at the low-quality end of the spectrum to Apple Lossless and lossless AIF or WAV files at the high end. It is also important to note that the AX functions only at a 44.1kHz sample rate. When you play 32kHz or 48kHz data, iTunes sample-rate-converts the data in real time before sending it to the AX.
iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirPlay to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port. As you already know for analog, the AX has a built-in DAC to convert the Encoded Digital Audio to Analog which is sent to the same audio port.
One operational glitch is the fact that, as the AX doesn't have a local clock circuit, when the incoming data is interrupted, as it is when you change songs in iTunes, there is no longer a digital output to feed the DAC, which loses lock as a result. Using an external DAC, which may offer better audio performance, may have issues with this glitch. Some DACs are more sensitive than others.

iPhone 4S photos on the info tab of iPhoto are 3,1Mpx. How I change the camera to 8Mpx?

    Zoom out.
There are not settings to control the image quality, the device always takes the largest image possible.  Zooming in will cause the image to be a lower resolution.

  • How good are the WD MyBook Studio Ed. Refurbished Replacements?

I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition for Mac - External Hard Drive that is 2 years old, and has started to have problems.
It keeps running constantly and gets very warm. I unplug the cables from it, let it cool for a few minutes, replug the cables, and do a forced backup.... but the next scheduled backup, it starts up and will keep running for hours without doing the backup.
So I unplug it again, let it rest, replug, then do a forced backup, and everything repeats itself as previously mentioned.
I called WD Support this morning, and she said that I could send it in, and they would send me a refurbished replacement. I have read on other forums (tools, etc.) that people send items in for a replacement, and they get back a refurbished unit that is all banged up, and doesn't work properly.
My question is... how good is the WD refurbished replacements that they send back. Are they in good condition? Does anyone have any experience with WD on this?
I have even thought of just getting a new external HD from another company, (G-Drive, LaCie, etc), but I have seen mixed reviews on them. I like the G-Drive Solid State (no moving parts) but that is over $500.... too rich for my blood.
    Any recommendations on either question.
    Thanks,
    Jim

From what I've read on the internet WD offer poor customer service and their products are of low quality. Certainly I have experienced first-hand many WD hard drives failing, mostly with the dreaded click click click. I've only known two or three Seagates go this way in all the years I've been using hard drives (pretty much since the early days of 120MB).
It may be expensive, but I highly recommend the ReadyNAS Duo as a backup solution and / or as general network storage. I have one set up with two 1TB Seagate NS drives in mirrored mode and it works very well. Seagate NS drives are enterprise-standard, designed for use in RAID hardware where they will be in close proximity to one another, Seagate AS drives are not designed for this purpose and so may fail in this situation. Other hard drive manufacturers make enterprise-grade drives too, I'm guessing that the ones WD use in their MyBook products are not these drives though which might explain why there are so many failures. The enterprise-grade drives typically cost about £20 more but I think for reliable backup purposes it's well worth the extra expense.

  • How good is the N97 for you to replace your multip...

Hi, a quick question for anyone who has an N97 and using it for more than communication.
I have had a Nokia of all types (6310i, N71, 6680 etc) for almost 10 years and two weeks ago, I decided to upgrade to the N97 (cost: Euro269 with Vodafone Ireland,12 month contract).
The main reason I got my N97 was to cut down on the tech clutter (Plugs, data cables and memory devices) I had for misc. media playback. I had an PSP (video playback, via 16GB MSProDuo), Ipod (music for walking & in-car audio via Belkin FM transmitter) and an N95 8GB (phone calls). Yes, I could have gotten the Iphone but the change over to O2 and the min. euro45/month fee on an 18 month contract was not worth the hassle involved.
What I wanted was, ideally, one device for all three needs: audio, video and communications.
Two weeks after getting the N97, I'm happy that it has solved two of the three requirements: Video playback & communications) but audio playback is still clunky to use & difficult to edit.
-The video: as I mentioned in another posting, porting over an .avi video file is still clumsy (I'm using Windows 7, maybe compatibility issues?). I've been using with 100% transfer/playback success -handbrake (single file) and AVS (Multiple files) to convert to .MPEG4 and file manager to drop the Mpeg4 file into "Video" folder. It's multiple steps instead of the seamless process promised by PC SUITE/OVI but, hey, it works for me!
-Audio: a huge pain to create a simple playlist for walking. I know the 2.0 firmware promised in late Oct. looks great (from the video preview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_iajkv2YE8) but trying to simply find a song is tedious in a what should have been an intuitive touch screen interface. Using the selection menu is like using Win 3.11 after using Win 7 -slow, clumsy & not designed for a smart phone. Also, the "find album art" in Nokia Music is slow & inaccurate. I do like the FM Transmitter feature and the little I have used so far in car, has been seamless to setup and a snap to use.
-Communication: This is the first touch screen phone I have had and while it has taken time to make the mental shift from hitting physical keys, I'm happy with the handset's performance. Being blunt, I really hope the firmware upgrade addresses the N97's buggy OS. I have had to hard reset twice (change all, and I mean all "Save To" setting -messages, email, cache etc, to "Mass Memory" not "Phone memory" as this seems to have stopped cold the "memory full" warnings I was getting). Also, I'm finding the camera much better with the N97 Vs the N95 8GB and the free app. PhotoBrowser (http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-photo-browser) is simply amazing to use as an indexing tool. If you want to impress family with the phones functions, take a photo of them and open up PhotoBrowser for the wow! impact.
Sorry if this is long winded but while I have read a lot of postings on the site for specific issues, just wondering how anyone in general is finding using the handset/computer for day to day media use? Personally while the battery life demands I have a charger with me always, I really like having a single device that does two of the three functions I was looking for in a single unit.

  • How to restore the Camera App./Icon that comes with the iPhone ?

I accidentally deleted my Camera app icon when I was rearranging icons on my iPhone 4S. Since it's a "standard feature" and not an "App" from the App store I cannot find out how to "resinstall" what came with your phone as standard feature. Yet, I can perform a search for Camera and have it come up and use it but I cannot locate it in a folder or even when I'm plugged in to the iTunes on my iMac to see all the apps. on the screen. What gives? Please don't tell me to restore my phone b/c for this one little app., it just seems like there should be an easier way to add it back to my home screen. Please and thanks!

It can't be deleted. It either got moved to another page or into a folder.
As for the "support icon", press and hold the icon till all icons begin to wiggle. You can then press the X on the icon to delete it. Press the home button when you are finished.

  • Vanishing Point Exchange - How to place the camera ?

When I import a .vpe file into AE, I'm given a "custom" camera with an un(real)worldly focal length, and six-figure position and zoom values. My 3D scene is in extreme close-up.
My intuition is to give the camera a 35mm preset, set the zoom in real-world terms (I know,... I'm not in the real world anymore, Toto) and then move the camera position to my required start point.
I've been trying this, with multiple variations, all day and am getting nowhere - whatever I do results in either correct geometry at an unusable distance, or a nicely composed frame with unacceptable geometry. (I got lucky once early this morning - but have since been unable to repeat the result).
A question to those who, unlike me, know what they're doing: How should I go about this ??
    Thanks !

    That's
brilliant - thank you so much. This points the camera squarely at the
front vertical plane (in the real world terms of my scene, the end wall
of the hall). I'm no longer lost in space.
    I then change the
camera Position Z-axis value to bring the camera closer to this plane
and ... Uh oh! the other four planes (side walls, floor and ceiling)
become stretched into a streaky blur. Where did I go wrong ?
If you want to post a screenshot, feel free to do it.
I suspect what you are seeing is a limitation for textures extracted from planes which have wild perspective shifts. When planes are more perpendicular to the "real" camera, the less actual texture information in the original, especially as pixels go further away from the camera. Zooming/orbiting with a 3D camera just makes this much more obvious So, there are some real world limitations when navigating pictures turned into 3D scenes in this way.
In clarification ... My final output is a QuickTime movie played from hard disk to a video projector. I work to a  frame size of 1400 x 1050 pixels to match the SXGA+ native resolution of my preferred projector (avoiding rescaling and loss of resolution in the projector). The size of my AE Footage image (in this case) is 5139 x 5433 to allow me to move my 1400 x 1050 frame around the footage to simulate camera movements. In the case of the "dolly in" towards the wall in my .vpe 3D set, 1400 x 1050 original pixels is the extreme limit of the movement beyond which I cannot go without interpolation and loss of resolution.
So to rephrase my question, with apologies for lack of clarity first time around, what would be a realistic limit to the pixel count of my footage image given the limitations of my system: 2.26GHz Quad-Core, 16 GB RAM and fast RAID ?
There should be no problems in such a case. In any case, just leave a couple of CPUs free in Memory and Multiprocessing, so that the other instances have more memory available to them.
(I've just ordered CS4, even though CS3 is more than adequate to my "aesthetic" needs, as I believe it offers better management of multiprocessing – and in the hope it will make my OpenGL problems go away.)
Multiprocessing in CS4 should be better, not worse. Sometimes "better" means taking a more conservative approach
In CS3, MP was more an "all or nothing" kind of thing, even if people used a buried text preference to turn off some cores. There are now officially supported management options for users.
