How I got my L7780 Direct Digital Filing to work on MacBook Leopard 10.5.6

My situation was that I had miraculously been able to get Direct Digital Filing working once, but couldn't remember the exact steps I made to get it to work. I then had to clean reinstall my MacBook. And even when I put the exact path name that I had used originally in the web server for the printer (EWS?) and had set the network settings the same way I had originally. I was unable to get DDF to work.
I was able to set up the L7780 wirelessly. I was able to print and scan from my MacBook wirelessly. BUT I couldn't get Direct Digital Filing to work.
Neither Technical Support nor internet forums helped me entirely. I just took good tips here and there and finally got it all working together. Had a nightmare of a time figuring it. I called HP Tech Support and they told me I had setup everything on the L7780 correctly...only it just wouldn't working. Tech Support didn't offer to send me a new printer, but only suggested that I could do without Direct Digital Filing???
What I did...
Uninstall everything, the HP software from laptop. Making sure that all traces of the printer, or its drivers were off computer. Reset Network settings to default on printer. Reset factory defaults under Tools Menu on printer. Reset my wireless router.
1. I turned the router on
2. I turned the printer on (at this point, it is not connected to the network at all, either ethernet wire, or wireless, it has no IP address)
3. I turned my MacBook on
4. Connected my MacBook to L7780
5. Installed the Printer software that I downloaded from HP website on MacBook. (Installed L7780 as USB)
6. Tested the printing, and the scanning from my MacBook to make sure it works.
7. Downloaded the Software Update from Apple that always comes up to update the HP driver after installation.
Then for Direct Digital Filing,
8. From the L7780 I selected the Setup Wireless Network Wizard or something like that. After that, the printer was connected to my network, and had an IP address.
9. (Unable to get DDF working on my MacBook, I made a last ditch effort to see if it worked on my Windows Vista Laptop that had worked before as well) I turned on my Windows Vista Laptop, opened up Command, and pinged the IP of the printer. It worked.
10. I created a folder and configured it to share for the printer. After configuring it. It will tell you the Address that you use to type into the Direct Digital Filing speed dial path to the folder. I did that. I tried DDF to the Windows Vista folder and it worked on my Vista laptop. Encouraged...
11. I then tried it on my MacBook. I got into Terminal. I pinged the IP of the L7780. Strangely, I got an endless ping result list, it wouldn't stop. You have to press CTRL+C to stop it.
12. Then I created a folder in root directory of my MacBook Hard Drive. "Scan." Went into Systems Preferences. Went into the Sharing Tab. Clicked the + sign to add a shared folder. Selected the new "Scan" folder. Made sure the Option was for SMB sharing (Must type in user ID & password). Made sure "File Sharing" was selected.
Voila it finally worked!!!!
NOTE:
In the EWS? (web embedded print server by typing in the IP of the printer in your web browser)the Path is as follows: \\HARDDISK\Scan
type in user name & password
leave PIN blank, or erase it if there is anything there
(If you have it in your Documents folder, it would look something like this... \\HARDDISK\Users\Username\Documents\Scan ..... However, becareful in the EWS if your path name is too long, you can't type in the entire path .... ALSO the original time that it was working (I don't know how)... I had my path as \\192.168.1.5\Username\Documents\Scan .... For some reason I was able to use my IP address of my MacBook, and then skip to my User name without the "Users" path before it .... However, since I reinstalled my MacBook, that address no longer worked for some reason.)
NOTE:
Either After I got it working on my Windows Vista Laptop, or after pinging the printer from my MacBook. I noticed a strange change in my Networks in the System Preferences. There was a new Location ncamed "hp nct temp set" instead of the original "Automatic" location that was there before. On the left, all "Airport" icons, "Connected" & full signals, instead of a variety of icons, Bluetooth, Airport, Ethernet, etc that the original Automatic location had. Either way, it seems to be making the Direct Digital Filing working, so I won't ask why. Further details in "Advanced" showed nothing different other than under "Airport" "Preferred Networks:" there was an additional Network Name "hpsetup" other than my home Wireless network. All other settings seem to be the same.
SUMMARY:
(Like I said, I'm not sure if Direct Digital Filing started working on my Macbook running Leopard because I got it to work on my Windows computer first, or because I used Terminal to ping the printer.)
but...
1. Setup L7780 wirelessly by making sure your Wireless network is working, and then turning on the printer, and then select "Wireless Setup Wizard" under Network on printer. It will give you a list of wireless networks from which you choose yours, and then type in the security password. After that is complete and it says your printer is now connected to the network, select display wireless network settings to make sure the L7780 has an IP address.
2. On your Mac, open up Terminal and ping the IP of L7780. CTRL+C to stop it from pinging if it doesn't stop automatically
3. Create and share folders on your Mac (making sure it's SMB with user id and password, and that the path to the folder isn't too long)
3. Then setup Direct Digital Filing speed dials in the EWS by typing in the printer IP address in your web browser and going on the "Settings" tab.
4. Test it from the L7780 by pushing the Direct Digital Filing button under Scan!
I wrote this out for all those people that must be having a hard time with this as I had myself, and not getting any help from the internet or from Technical Support. I hope I figured it out for most of us.

I found this post and the HP instructions for setting up digital filing to be extremely frustrating, because nothing worked -- UNTIL I tried shutting down my Mac and rebooting after entering the settings (a simple restart would probably have done as well). Digital Filing then immediately worked like a charm. For the benefit of others like me who find abstract paths useless, here is the specific path setting that works on my Mac (you will of course have to use a different path on your Mac, but this will give you a real-world example of a path that works) -- this is on an HP Officejet Pro L7780:
\\BillCheesemanG5\cheeseb\Public
In abstract terms, this is:
\\<computer name from Sharing pane of System Preferences>\<short user name>\<folder named Public in my user domain, which comes already set up for sharing when you install Mac OS X>.
I hope this helps somebody.

  • DIRECT DIGITAL FILING FOR WINDOWS

i HAVE AN HP OFFICE JET PRO 8600 PRO AND AN HP ENVY COMPUTER.  HOW DO I SET UP DIRECT DIGITAL FILING FOR WINDOWS?

    Hello @shodes1225!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I should be able to provide some help regarding digital filling with the  Officejet 8600.  Whether you are setting up digital filing for fax or for scanning they are both located in the same area.  In order to setup the digital filling you must ensure that the Officejet 8600 full feature software and driver is installed.
For the Officejet 8600 software click here: HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver
Once the software is installed you should get an icon of the printer on your desktop.  Open that icon and you should get the HP Printer Assistant.  If you do not have the icon on the desktop you should be able to locate it in your start menu.
In the HP Printer assistant are 2 options for setting up digital filing.  There should be an option for scanning called Scan to network folder wizard and another option for faxing called Digital fax setup wizard.  Open what ever one you want to setup and just follow the steps.  The wizard should guide you through the setup!
Let me know how it goes and thanks again for posting on the HP Forums!

  • L7600 Direct Digital Filing Problem

I have an L7600 on my network that I'm trying to get to scan to a central location. It works just fine scanning to a share on a workstation but when I try and get it to scan to a server it falls over. After reading the *tiny* amount of information available on this subject I've noticed a mere footnote that DDF isn't compatible with Active Directory. Now, what the hell does that mean? Does this mean it won't save to a server that has AD installed? Is it something to do with the logons? Is it possible to get DDF to save to a server at all? Thanks in advance for any and all information!

No problem. Glad you found workaround.

  • How do i get my direct selection tool to work properly?

using adobe cc 2014 and all of a sudden the space bar does not turn the direct selection tool into the hand to drag a pasteboard.
it seems universal across the above programs
amazing how such a little thing kills productivity

    spooney,
As I (mis)understand the issue, you may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Has anyone got DiskWarrior 4.2 - 4.3 to work w/ Snow Leopard?

My iMac is totally up to date and I've tried both DW 4.2 and 4.3 on it and it will NOT let me boot up from that DW disk. It's always the ownsership issue. I tried their tech 'help' person with no luck. He just tells me to not use a wireless keyboard and other stuff like download to a DVD, not a CD. I've spent easily 20 hours messing around with no luck.
I hold down the C key and it always just comes back to the regular desktop. Anyone got a sure-fire fix for this? I've read online that Snow Leopard just won't let DW work anymore. Worst of all, Apple blames THEM for the issue and DW blames Apple.

You have to have a valid Mac operating system on the external hard drive in order to boot from it. (By the way, holding the 'C' key forces the computer to boot from a system DVD disc if there's one in the optical drive. It has nothing to do with booting from a hard drive. Holding the 'Option' key will booting will bring up a menu showing all the valid system drives your computer knows about.)
Copying DW to the external drive isn't enough. You first need to put an OS on it. There are two methods: Use a program like CCC to copy (clone) your current drive) or use your restore disc to install the Mac OS on the external drive. Since your computer's drive is not well, I suggest the latter.
So get your system disc (probably the grey disc that came with the computer when it was new, or the Snow Leopard disc if you upgraded to SL after buying y our computer.) Insert the disc, restart the computer - and now hold the 'C' key until you see the grey Apple logo.
Check out this article on how to format an external hard drive. Then install the Mac OS on the drive.

  • How can I get an HP Deskjet 882C to work with Snow Leopard?

Is there a way to get our HP Deskjet 882C to work with Snow Leopard?  This printer is a workhorse, and even though it is so old, our budget and common sense say not to get rid of it.

Install the HPIJS package. This is an open source set of drivers for older printers.  HP dropped support for a whole lot of printers when Snow Leopard was developed.  These drivers fill the gap.
You will need to install three components - Ghostscript, Foomatic RIP and the hpijs package.  They are all on the HPIJS web page.  Once installed, restart your Mac, connect your printer.  You will probably need to go into System Preferences > Print & Fax to select the printer and set it as your default printer.  After that it works great.  And it also works on Lion.

  • How come my dvd studio pro 3 is not working properly with leopard? Need help!, How come my dvd studio pro 3 is not working properly with leopard? Need help!

I recently installed os leopard on my power MAC G5 and my DVD studio pro 3 application is not working properly as it used to be. I was unable to create motion menu and build the dvd properly. Then I deleted and reinstall dvd studio pro 3, but it did not solve the problems. What should I do?

I have a sneaking suspicion it won't work in 10.5.x, possibly because of the version of Quicktime...
    System Requirements:
    Mac OS X v10.3.2
733 MHz or faster PowerPC processor (G4 minimum) and AGP graphics card
256 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended)
    20 GB available disk space
8 MB of video memory (32 MB recommended)
    QuickTime 6.5
    DVD drive required for installation
I think your going to need a dual boot Mac with 10.4.x on another drive or partition.

  • HP Digital Filing function doesn't work with Mountain Lion....?!

My HP Officejet L7780 is an All-in-One with a fabulous feature of Direct Digital Filing allowing us to do a digital scan and filing into a folder on my Mac. It is operated entirely from the printer by a single button.
It works perfectly on my MBP with Snow Leopard.
On my new MBP with Mountain Lion this function does not work - (the printer cannot find the computer, or says it is not turned on or it is not accessible..) Applecare cannot explain it - the Apple Genius does not know how to fix it - HP washes their hands saying the printer is no longer Supported.....
I have a perfectly good printer/scanner/copier/fax - and i can still call a scan from my computer - but i can no longer send a file from the printer.
I've done all the software downloads, uninstalled and reinstalled all the MAC-OS and Printer software, 3 times - looked throughout the HP website for udpate drivers to work with OS10.8
Does anyone know how to fix it, please ?

    Hi ShlomiL,
Thanks - i'm sure your answer is correct, it is totally consistent with the observed facts. but i ask myself WHY, oh WHY does Apple do such a short-sighted move to cut off legacy apps or legacy hardware forcing people either to not adopt their latest hardware/software, or waste totally good office equipment which is still perfectly workable.
As luck would have it, i have an MBP with OS10.6 for my business - i can do a Direct Digital file scan to it perfectly OK but my new Retina MBP which i use for all my personal finances, taxes etc is the one i want to use with the printer, at home.
I can get stuff from the scanner to my home MBP but have to do that poor workaround - and i refuse to be forced to trash a perfectly good 4 year old printer just to please some software re-designer.
Is there a work-around (hack ?) where i can download the old SMB file/driver into Mountain Lion and replace the SMBX version which comes with the new OS, please ?

  • L7650 Digital Filing via WIFI

I have a proper operating L7650 All-In-One. Printing via WIFI or ethernet cable works perfectly.
I can not get the 7650 to connect to a Windows 7 laptop for "Digital Filing" when using WIFI. Pressing the Start Scan button causes the printer to try connecting but eventually it quits with "Cannot connect to \\Inspir...\Scanned Files . Make sure the remote computer is turned on. Press OK to continue". If I plug in an ethernet cable all works well so sharing, path name, security, etc. are all ok.
How can I get Digital Filing to work over WIFI?
    Thanks!
    Ron
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I positioned my LT 6 ft. from the wireless router so signal strength would not be a problem. It's also close enough that my ethernet cable reaches easily.
Using Internet Explorer I accessed the built-in web page in my L7650. Going to Settings - Direct Digital Filing Speed-dial I filled out the appropriate entries for the Address Book and saved them to the 7650. Looking at the screen of the 7650 I can see the network path change when I make and save the changes, thus, I'm able to access the 7650 via WIFI.
I then went to the 7650 and pressed Digital Filing and Start Scan to initiate the process. The printer tries to connect but in about 15 sec. it quits with "Cannot connect to \\Inspir...\Scanned Files . Make sure the remote computer is turned on. Press OK to continue".
If I now connect the ethernet cable, disable WIFI and allow time for the LT to get on the network step 3 works properly and the document gets scanned and saved correctly.
Pulling the cable and re-enabling WIFI returns the LT to the problem stated in step 3.

  • How do I determined if the USB ports are working?

How can I determine if the USB ports are working.  Macbook Pro i7.
Thanks for any help.  This is a new computer to me migrating from a PC system.

Blessings to those who are able to reply with possible answers.   I am sorry....but I have spent days working on getting my two USB ports to work also.  I basically use the USB ports for a wireless mouse and various flashdrives/memory sticks.  I have a MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard 10.6.8  I have tried software update, SMC and PRAM resets, battery reset, hardware test, creating a new user account....and browsing and reading numerous discussion boards.....awgh!  I have stopped short of using my install DVD (fear of loosing data), upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion (some fear of loosing an application that might not be compatible), contacting an Apple Store (AppleCare or whatever--live 2 hours away + fear of expense), and of course, trashing the laptop.  Does anyone out there have any possible solutions?   I see I am not alone.  --A frustrated first-time Apple products owner.

  • How do I get hp 4000 laserjet to work in snow leopard

How do I get an HP Laserjet 4000 to work in Snow Leopard, 10.6.8 ?
Supposedly it is not compatible, but maybe there is "workaround" For instance some sort of Universal Print Driver like HP has for this printer for Windows  7 problems.
    Thanks

    HP?  Donno.  Start at www.hp.com.
FWIW, HP likely retired those printers many years ago; the follow-on LaserJet 4200 and LaserJet 4300 series I've been working with are probably seven or eight years old now, and your LaserJet 4000 models are yet older.
According to Wikipedia, the LaserJet 4000 and LaserJet 4050 series was discontinued in 1999.  (When or if the support for that printer has ended, I don't know.  That's a question for HP.)
If you're familiar with networking and have a wired network available (and most WiFi devices have that option available), then I'd get the JetDirect path going; that's vastly easier to manage and maintain than is dealing with any other path into those printers.
Assign the JetDirect a static IP address outside the pool of addresses the local DHCP server is using, and configure a network printer at that address.
On the LaserJet 4200n and 4300n series, those provide Bonjour announcements, which means they're really easy to configure; OS X finds those automatically.  And those are web-managed, meaning you can connect to the printer via Safari, and check its status and supplies.  (I don't know if the LaserJet 4000 series offers that; that's older than I've worked with recently.)
HP does (did) have a universal driver for OS X, though they've probably not modified the drivers for those printers in years.  (A Google search for /HP LaserJet 4000 Series Full Solution Driver Mac/ does find a set of drivers of some ilk for OS X 10.6.)
The LaserJet 4000 is old enough that the generic Postscript driver in the Apple CUPS package in OS X will probably work fine, too.

    Hi @brownierl,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are trying to setup the digital filing network folder for your HP Officejet pro 8610. I am happy to help!
I would recommend to go through this guide, Scan From the Control Panel (Including Scan to Email, to a PDF, and to a Network Folder) for HP Offi.... Select How to scan directly to a network folder (network connections only), when you get to Step two: Set up the Scan to Network Folder. Make sure to select Windows, and try each of the options available.
    Hope this helps!
