How is iTunes deciding what music to sync?

After my previous question received no responses I broke down my process for testing music syncing even further.
In my music syncing preferences, I have sync "selected playlists... (etc)" selected, do NOT automatically fill space, and exactly ONE playlist selected for syncing: Top 50 Most Played. Up at the top of the screen next to "Sync Music" it says "50 songs" which would be correct. There should be the 50 songs that appear on this one selected playlist on the phone. Simple.
But down at the bottom where it shows the space taken, it's showing 2105 songs, and it certainly seems like that's what's being synced. Although if I go to "On this phone" it shows 83 songs in that list, but some of that appears to be streaming stuff, which I'm not sure how it got there because I never stream anything - I only want music that I've specifically synced to the phone to appear. There is a ton of stuff actually on the phone that is NOT appearing in "On This iPhone."
I've been using iTunes since it was called SoundJam MP - the fact that I can't figure out how to get specific music on my phone is a NIGHTMARE. I'm officially at the point where if it were possible to use non-Apple software to do this, I'd try it, because I've spent way too much time trying to figure out a simple thing.
Anyway - I hope I'm just being an idiot and someone can explain it to me easily. That'd be a nice surprise. Thanks!

Don't try to change the songs. Connect the iPod, click on the name of it, go to the Summary page and Restore it as a new device.

De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.

  • How does Apple decide 'what's hot' among iphone apps?

How does Apple decide what to list in its "what's hot" section of the iphone application store? I assume there is some hard coded logic behind that phrase.

Sorry, but Apple never discloses how they choose those sorts of features.

  • How do i choose what information is synced

i have 1260 albums 550 artists.  when i sync my ipod i get thousands of artists, i only want the album artist. how do i limit what information gets sync'd?

The iPod classic only recognizes the artist field, not album artist. You can cut down some of the clutter by setting the compilation flag for compilation albums, and enabling one of the Compilations menu items in the classic menus. To get things really organized however you should also move all guest/featured artist information out of the artist field. There are other issues regarding common album titles such as Greatest Hits. See Grouping tracks into albums for more information.

  • How do i decide what files iCloud does and does not upload/store?

    Hello,
I am in the process of uploading my music to the iCloud.
This includes music from the iMatch facility that I am subscribed to as well as other music that I need to upload because it’s not available in the ITunes store.
    I have a question?
How do I control what files/playlists etc are uploaded to the cloud??
As at present I only have 50GB of storage, how to I best manage this to see what I have and check I upload all that I want?
In the same way as doing a standard sync with your iPod/iphone to your PC, you can control what playlists and tracks that you add and which you don’t?
How in essence do I do this with ICLOUD and prioritize what it holds??
    Appreciate your feedback folks
    Simon.

    Hi Kirk,
    Thank you for your response.
I was under the impression that the limit was 50GB max or 25,000 files whichever came first?
    I have a total of 80gb :-)
Anyway, if the limit is 50GB and say for somereason i only wanted to upload 3/4 of my files to the cloud, how do i detrmine which ones are uploaded and stored via match or non match upload and which remain outisde the cloud?
    Can this be done?
    Regards
    Simon.

  • How can I control what music is stored on my iPhone?

Apple has decided that all the music I purchase from them is going to be constantly changing disorganized mess of deleted songs and placeholder albums and is controlled by it's own zombie scheduling. I makes me very, VERY angry. I see two options, rip all my iTunes purchases as MP3s, or buy and Android (really not serious about that, but this has been an issue since IOS7). Any other last ditch strategies I should consider???

Sounds like somethings very wrong ...
If capacity is a constraint, and things don't add up for you, you might be carrying a large photo collection in your Camera Roll -- more so than you may think.  There seems to be an issue with some users where the photo usage does not add up between what is displayed vs. the true amount of storage being taken by photos.  Some users resolved this by:
    (a) Temporarily turn off automatic date/time:  Settings/ General/ Date&Time/ Set Automatically/ OFF.
    (b) Manually set your iPhone's date and time to somewhere in or before August 2014.
    (c) Go to your Photos app and look in your "Recently Deleted" folder.  You may find a LOT of photos there that weren't before.
    (d) Re-delete all the recently deleted photos from this folder.
    (e) Go back to (a) and set your date&time automatically.
That may be your first problem.
You may also have "All Songs" turned on, which shows you all songs you've purchased even if they're not actually on your iPhone.  Go to:
Settings/ iTunes & App Store and then turn the "Show All" option OFF for both Music and Video.
Now, if you had the "Show All" enabled and selected one of these iCloud songs, they will download to your iPhone and you may have a heck of a time removing them.  If you've done this, the best method I've found is:
    (a) Set the iPhone for Manually Manage Music & Video (sounds like you already do this).
    (b) While connected to iTunes, open the contents of the iPhone and select all songs and delete them.
    (c) Manually initiate a local (not iCloud) backup of your iPhone to your computer.
    (d) Restore the iPhone, then select the backup.  Let your phone re-populate all the apps (should be no music)
    (e) Disconnect and check the Music app, verify that there truly is no music.  If there is, go to:
Settings/ General/ Usage/ Manage Storage/ Music, then swipe across "All Songs" (from right to left) and select Delete.
    (f) Reset your iPhone, or do another backup and restore.
That should clear out all music ... now re-populate your music, either manually or auto-sync all songs or partial (i.e. sync to selected playlists, artists, etc.)  If you want to autosync just part of your library, you can.  My library exceeds 100GB yet I autosync about 42GB of that to my 64GB iPhone. This is done by defining what I want synced via a series of playlists, some of which auto-populate based on my ratings and what I play (i.e. some songs drop out for awhile once I listen to them) as well as static playlist where I can manually place complete albums I want to remain.  The first auto-sync takes an hour or two, but subsequent auto-syncs only take a matter of minutes -- the whole thing doesn't re-sync each time, just what changed.

  • Itunes store bought music wont sync post crash of Iphone

Crash occurred due to last IOS update. One option on Itunes says it will erase all music on iphone and use everything in library. appreciate your help. Itunes seems more complex than necessary.

Were they bought in iTunes on the computer, or on the phone? If purchased on the computer, connect the phone to the computer, select Music tab, select what music you want to sync to the phone, click on Sync. See this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1351

    thanks
You cannot sync music to an iPhone with more than a single iTunes library at a single time. (i.e., I can't sync music from my desktop computer and then sync music from my laptop and keep both syncs)
This means you've synced this iPhone to another iTunes library, probably on another computer.
You either keep the music that is on this iPhone now, or you sync with this iTunes library.  You cannot do both.

  • HT201250 How does backupd decide what counts as a weekly backup?

Time machine seems to have decided that all but the oldest of my daily backups over a month old are expired backups to be deleted.
I thought it would keep all weekly backups until the disk became full.
The backup disk is far from full, so how did it decide that none of the backups it deleted counted as a "weekly backup"?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

  • My itunes will not sync any of my music onto my iphone 4s. It also has this huge "other" category that is about 4 gb long. How can I get my music to sync back onto my iPhone?

  • How do I get my music to sync with iTunes?

I couldn't find this answer, Basically, I added 2xSSD's in my Windows PC and reinstalled iTunes. I had certain songs on my ipod touch (about 900) and I have about 3000 in my iTunes that are all checked now after the reinstall of iTunes. I never created a list, but rather just chose music along the way and sync'd them that way. How can I get just the Music on my iPod touch to sync with itunes in a way that I don't have to uncheck all the songs in iTunes? Or do I have to start all over again?
