How is the screen lit?

Hey, I just got my mbp 17 inch in the mail and i was wondering how the screen is lit...
The reason i'm curious is just because when i stand from a distance, or look at the screen from an angle, all along the top i can see places where it's lighter, but just along the top, not evenly spaced... I was wondering if everyone gets this or not... Thanks
-a paranoid mac owner.

The 17-Hi Res display is not LED backlit as the new 15.4 display. It’s still incorporates the Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display (TFT) chemical based design. Unfortunately, it can show variations in contrast brightness.

  • My screen on my MacBook Pro blacks out constantly. If I press on the bottom left side of the MacBook, I can keep the screen on. I have been placing a small note pad to keep pressure on the bottom in order to keep the screen lit up.

You should try taking the battery out and putting it back in, but then if that doesn't work, you should take it into your Apple Retail Store and have a genius at the Genius Bar take a look. That seems like a hardware problem to me.

  • NB100 - How set the screen brightness?

    Hi all.
Just bought an NB100 - overall very very pleased with it. Well built, good screen and very compact etc.
Got a couple of questions? The screen brightness is controlled by Fn+F9/F10. I like to have it set to "halfway" or less - partly to preserve battery - but also because I find max brightness is actually TOO bright for me! But on reboot the machine seems to always start at maximum again. Is there any way round this? Does it perhaps need a firmware update (my machine seems to be running version 1.90 which I believe is the latest)?
I noticed other threads mentioning Fn + F8 as a means of selecting Bluetooth/Wlan etc? Mine seems to just control the fan setting and processor speed - The "grey" fan setting gives 1.6ghz and the fan comes on - whereas Fn+F8 toggles a "white" fan icon - where the processor throttles down to 800/900 ish and the fan slows/stops(?). [in passing I've noticed some videos become "jerky" if the lower setting is chosen]
I'm not 100% sure what Fn+ "pipe" key does (to the left of F1)? The Fn+F1 switches on wireless/wifi I know - but the "pipe" key seems to be a Wlan symbol (or is that the key to use for Bluetooth or GPS or whatever)? Sorry to sound so ignorant - but the user guide doesnt go into that much detail. I'm fairly sure the machine I bought - which was a Toshiba Refurbished/Reconditioned NB100 - model PLL10E - hasnt got any BT/GPS etc - just the basic wifi which F1 switches on and off.
Final comment - and others have said this - the key tops are very difficult to see in low light!! The "grey" colour was definitely a design mistake! But I can live with it - either a usb light? or some stickon (white) letters?
    Regards to all.

hi, i think the best way to set brightness is in options of energy properties accessible in system tray icon. I know about bt and wlan activation, it seem that bt and wlan dispositives are on the same circuit on/off, so not indipendents. Nb100 is a good inexspansive machine :)

  • How will the ipad batery and screen like this ???

    hi!
i plan on using my ipad in the dental surgery i am working in to stand most of the time on a dock.
while standing on a dock i want it to run movies or slideshows with special offers, before after pictures etc and then i want to take it off the dock several times a day to show the patient his or her pictures i took before to explain findings.
how would the screen like to run 8 hours a day? would it be bad?
how would the batteries react to the ipad running 8 hours a day, most of the time on a dock with power supply but several times a day 5-10 min battery powered. would the battery have a new loading cyce every time i put the ipad back on the dock? would this use reduce the battery life of it?

Most battery suppliers of Nickle-Metal Hydride batteries say leaving them on a charger all the time shortens battery life...but you really have to ask what does that mean with respect to the planned life of the display you are planning. Your own plans for changing to another display approach may make that concern moot.
Apple provides this information on the iPad batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html
An important part of that is the recommendation of monthly complete charge cycles: drain the battery all the way, the unit shutsdown automatically at a charge level of 1%, or so. Then recharges on wall power to full charge. You could probably do that with a single days' usage as you have described.
Since the unit would be constantly changing images, you would not have to worry about anything like display damage from burning pixels like you do with computer monitors.
Why not get one and try it out and see what the patient reaction is? Sounds like a clever use to me.

  • My iPad mini won't work at room temperature.  I have to warm it up in my hands/arms for 2-3 minutes before the screen works correctly.  Anyone else have this issue or know a solution?

Two or three weeks ago, I had a cracked screen replaced on my iPad Mini 2 with retina display (32G).  It worked perfectly for 2-3 weeks, so I don't know how relevant the screen repair is.  Anyway, the iPad is currently running iOS 8.1.3.  I completely reset it because I want to sell it, but recently, the screen display started to have issues.  One afternoon I turned it on and the screen was a faint gray with vertical streaks that went away after I turned it off then back on.  That night, the screen would stay black when I tried to turn it on.  It was a different black to being off, though.  When I try to turn it on it changes to a brighter black, if that makes sense.  I can see a change in the shade of black, but there's no color or app icons.  The sound works even when the screen doesn't.  The only way I can get it to turn on properly is if I hold it in my hands/arms for 2-3 minutes.  I think the heat from my hands has something to do with it.  It's just weird that regular room temperature seems to be too cold.  We've had a cold winter in NY this year and my iPad may have spent 1-2 hours in my cold car the day this happened, but I can't say for sure.  Has anyone else heard of this issue or does anyone have a solution?

    I Also have this problem!!
In my situation, the screen simply started exhibiting the same symptoms a few weeks ago (early February) for no apparent reason.  At first I thought the screen was dead, but discovered the heat solution by accident.  Now I turn it on and keep it from going to sleep until I go to bed.  Thank goodness the battery is still awesome on this thing.
I bought it new and still has the original screen, I keep it at home (never below 62 degrees).  Coincidentally, this happened a day or two after the expiration of the warranty!!  Any help figuring this one out would be eternally appreciated.

  • My iPod won't turn on and the screen flashes white

the other day while using my ipod it all of a sudden reset and a diagnostics screen appeared and it started running all of these tests after which it stopped working. i then proceeded to plug it into my computer which recognized it and, after disconnecting, worked for about 10 minutes before it kept flashing in between the apple screen and the low battery screen. after a little of that it shut off completely until i plugged it back into my computer. After plugging it back in the screen lit up white and stayed lit until unplugged. once unplugged it flashes white every few seconds and thats it. my computer no longer recognizes it and restarting/reseting does not work. i could use all the help i can get. thanks.

    Any help here?

  • So how are the new iMacs? (Reviews, sightings, etc)

I've been scouring the 'Net for any information about the new Intel iMacs, but hardly a peep from anyone that I've seen. I'm specifically looking for information on the new 24, but any info will do.
    Are they quiet? Fast?
How are the screens? Are they too big (yeah, right). I read here [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3080026&#3080026] that the screens are dark on the sides. Isolated issue?
How do the internal speakers/bigger amp sound? I'm looking to get rid of mine to free up desk space and I'd like to confidently be able to put them into storage.
I've already ordered mine last week (second Mac to own, first iMac), but I'm waiting on it to ship, as it's a BTO with everything upgraded except the RAM is only 2G. This wait is killing me! There is little info on these new Macs. Please, someone post at least a first impression introductory review.
Any info/pics that anyone can share would be greatly appreciated. I've set up RSS with Flickr, Digg, Google news and the iMac discussions and I've seen 3 different 24" unpacking photo sets with what seems to be cell phone quality snapshots and 0 reviews.
Someone fill us in and post some quality shapshots so we can see how big this thing is!

    Michael,
Sorry to hear about that however once Apple ships the product it's in the hands of the shipper and Apple loses all control the same as Dell, HP, Acer etc... All the manufacturer's go to great lengths to ensure machines are packaged adequately so they can take the rigors shippers put them through however there are always going to be individual cases where contents are damaged. For example most computer manufactures make their packaging so the computers can be dropped from 10 or more feet onto a concrete floor. However there is no way they can protect a box if it's kicked in or crushed.
If she bought the computer from Apple's online store simply call AppleCare, explain the issue and they will arrange for a replacement. If it was purchased from another vendor and shipped to you then you will have to deal with that vendor's return policy.
Either way it's a shame and I'm sorry it happened to you and your daughter but rest assured it's a rare exception.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • How do you set the amount of time the screen stays lite after your last use?

How do you set the amount of time the screen stays lite after your last use?

    Settings>General>Auto-Lock.

  • How do I keep the keypad open when making a call? I may need to enter an extension and the screen is black.

After I make a call sometimes I need to enter an extension. When I receive certain calls I need to be able to hit a keypad number. The phone screen goes dark in both situations. How do I keep it lit?

It remains dark even when you move the phone away from your ear?  Is the proximity sensor covered by a screen protector or case, perhaps?
Try hitting the menu button to see if that lights up the screen so you can enter extensions or respond to prompts.

    Hi mafiose15,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
You can find the instructions in this article:
    Restoring iPod to factory settings

    All the best,

  • How to make the screen dim while music is playing

I can't get the screen to dim while playing music on my iPod Nano.  It used to be that the screen dimmed while music was playing until it lit up when I hit a button to change volume, track, etc.  This preserved the battery life.  It seems that I inadvertantly changed some setting just a few days ago because I saw the apple logo appear on the screen and since then have not been able to figure out how to make the screen dim while playing music.  I think the fact that the screen is staying on while I'm listening now is making the battery out very quickly.  Does anyone know how to solve this problem?  Thank you!

    Hello ZingMA,
You need to reset the backlight timer.
Go to settings, general, and backlight. You should be able to set if from there. I am assuming you have a 6th gen nano. If you have a different model the user manuals have the steps. Found here:

    Hope this helps.
