How is this for a PC spec for home video editing?

OK - we've decided to get the new PC now, focused around decent performance for video editing at home when we do it.   Any feedback on the below would be greatly appreciated.  I've tried to put in my "principles", but as you note I've highlighted some questions around these.
Principles
* Decent computer for Home Video Editing - so when we do it want it to be reasonable from a performance point of view (not annoying).  Also want assurance for the video data that a single HDD crash won't mean lost data.
* Hard Drive Configuration - Assume RAID 1 for data
C: 500GB - Operating System (1 x 500GB)
D: 500GB - Swap Area for O/S (1 x 500GB)
E: RAID 1 Redundancy for Data ( 2 x 1TB )
* 64 bit Windows 7 Pro
* Questions re Principles
Is it really worth having a separate drive (D: drive) for Swap?
Is there any real need to have a drive F: (another one) for exports?  This is non-real time so it shouldn't be an issue should it?
Any major improvement re moving say the C: drive to SSD? (or not worth the $$)
SATA II versus SATA III drives? (I've assumed both are ok when picking)
The Spec
CPU - Intel Core i7 960 Processor LGA1366 3.2GHz 8MB Cache CPU
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R X58+ICH10R QPI 6.4GT/s DDR3 2000 PCI-Ex16 SATAII SATA3 USB3.0 RAID GLAN ATX
RAM - Kingston 12GB(3X4G) KIT 1333MHz(PC3-10600)
Video Card - NVIDIA GTX560 - Gigabyte GTX560 OC 1G GDDR5 PCIE DualLink DVI  [?? matches motherboard / is this overkill ??]
RAID Card - Adaptec AAR1220SA-SGL SATAII RAID0 1 JBOD/2 PORT/Low Profile/PCIEx1/OEM/No Cables [?? is this ok - seems cheap ??]
HDD (non-RAID) - 2 x Western Digital 500G RE4 SATAII 7200rpm HDD 64MB Enterprise [?? only SATAII this is ok no??]
Case - CoolerMaster RC-942-KKN1 HAF X 942 Black No PSU [?? is this overkill - just took someone recommendation here ??]
Power Supply - Corsair HX-850 ATX Power Supply w 140mm Modular Cables [?? power ok?  again just took a recommendation ??]
O/S - 64bit - Microsoft Windows 7 Pro 64bit OEM(Microsoft OEM Terms&condition apply)
Note - I'm looking at the following local site re where to source if this assists: http://www.umart.com.au

Greg (correct me if that's not correct!),
You're spec. looks like a great start for what you are trying to do. I have a few comments, and also two questions!
Comments:
- Spec. generally looks fine
- I particularly like your case and p/s choices!
- For a home PC, you may consider bumping up your OS choice to Ultimate, which adds some nice multimedia capabilities
- Regarding the D drive for swap (and I assume you mean Premiere Pro media cache and media cache database too) will definitely speed up aspects of Premiere Pro, but likely be unnoticeable for other home PC day to day use. Why not build out the system and decide then if you need the extra speed for Premiere Pro - it is so easy to add something like that later.
- I'd vote no regarding a need for a F output drive for this system
- Regarding your OS drive... Speed and responsiveness versus cost - what do you choose? This really is a personal choice. I will say that a 2x1TB RAID 0 OS boot array would probably be a bigger step up in performance than a similar priced SSD option and a 2xSSD (60 to 80GB) array will perform better than a single larger SSD.
- Sata II vs Sata III - I have some of each now, and I would agree with other posters and articles on the Internet that say the often larger cache size on the Sata III models is more important than the Sata III interface. Keep going like you are going, with the assumption that both are OK.
- finally, your CPU; personnaly, with the new lower cost pricing on the i7-970, I'd suggest you downgrade to a i7-950 and same some money or upgrade to the 32nm 6-core i7-970 CPU and jump to a significantly new level of performance and power per watt
Questions:
- what version of Premier Pro will you be running?
- what will be your workflow (i.e. DV, Sony consumer AVCHD, Canon DSLR, etc.)?
Cheers,
Jim

  • Does this PC have good specs for after effects?

I am debating wether to buy the new Apple Mac pro 6 core cpu or PC that is built that has these specs:
    4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4770K 3.5GHz processor
    16GB DDR3 1600MHz memory
    1TB 7200 RPM SATA-III hard drive
    120GB SATA-III solid state drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 3GB dedicated graphics card
    12X Blu-ray combo drive
    10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet
    NZXT Phantom 410 gaming case
    2 USB 3.0 (front), 4 USB 3.0 (rear), 4 USB 2.0
    Front panel 12-in-1 card reader
120mm closed loop liquid cooling system
I am limited to these 2 options only.
I will be using the computer mainly for video editing and some 3d work(mainly title sequences using some 3d text and). Also i will be using AFter effects for special effects such as explosions and what not.
Im really confused and a newbie when it comes to specs needed on your comp to run after effects properly. Given the 2 options, New Apple mac pro or the PC with the specs listed above. What would be my best option? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest the X79 platform with the 4930K 6 Core CPU or better. If you get the Asrock Extreme 9 boards then the E5 V2 Xeons up to the 12 Core Xeons are available just like the nMPro. That becomes a major upgrade option later if your workflow changes. The workstation system would also push a 780GTX or 780TI card far better. I would suggest the 780Ti btw over the 780GTX. I would definitely suggest the PC over the nMPro for Adobe especially AE at this point unless you just require OSX.

  • How can I dynamically alter search spec for results set based on parameter

We have defined a string parameter in BIP as p_lastName.
We pass this to our RTF template in $p_lastName, definition in RTF as per below:

We want to include this data in a table based on our dataset but applying the parameter as a search criteria - in the form of

  • What is best mac and software for home video editing and creation

I am about to buy a mac to capture 30 years of photos, film, and video (multiple formats).
I want to then edit a series of videos to make movies to capture our family history.  I know I will have a lot of conversions to make and will use a local video transfer place to do that.
I am not worried about price.
My goal is to make a series 30 of DVD's each about 1.5 hours in duration.
I have a lot of organizing, editing, publishing and storing to do.  I know it will take me a long time.
I am about to purchase the mac and other things needed.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dave

I do LOTS what you are about to do.
I think I can confidently say I have tried all software and the vast majority of video converters. Here is how I do it.
    Computer:   Mac Pro
Movie editor:  iMovie 06, (more expensive than iMovie 11 but well worth the price) I have iMovie 11, but I would not use it for making DVDs.
DVD authoring:  iDVD 09 / 11  ( iDVD has not changed in a couple of years, just make sure you're using iDVD 08 or later).
You will also need a A/D coverter. (Like the Grassvalley ADVC300)
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I also own an Elgato EyeTV,  it's in a drawer somewhere. The ADVC300 gives much better results ESPECIALLY WITH TAPES.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!

  • Looking for a desktop replacement, how will this one fare?

I think I settled on the one I am looking for...
My price range is probably no more than 1300-1500.

    Toshiba X875-Q7190
How will this stand up to some moderate to heavy editing? I am new to the video editing world, coming from music production. I would mostly like to make simple youtube videos for man on the street stuff and work my way up to documentaries and the like, maybe around 45 mins in length or so with lots of graphics and stock footage. Will this be a good bargain for what I am looking for? I would rather it be overkill than get invested in the process of editing only to find out my computer cant cut it...
Thanks a lot you guys I am always learning more when I come here!

BTW...this is something I did recently which got me on this kick. I did it on my brothers Dell. I think it was a 17R if im not mistaken. It took it pretty well and rendering was about 2 hours for this 22min clip which is longer than I would have liked. But I didnt do any color correction or get to heavy into it, I was just learning the lay of the land for Pp.
I will mainly be using AVCHD full 1080p from my Canon Vixia M500 and 1080p from my GoPro Hero 3 Black if that makes any difference...Thanks!
    heres the clip.

  • Computer for Video Editing for the Present and Beyond

In an earlier post I announced that I have been a Premiere Elements user since Day One, and I also mentioned I was looking to have a new computer built from scratch rather than purchase from Dell or HP. I am close to finalizing that build, and am looking forward to upgrading to Elements 8.0. I am also looking forward to becoming a subscriber to Muvipix.com. Becoming a part of the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum coupled with being an eventual subscriber to Muvipix.com has elevated my enthusiasm for video editing. Special Thanks go to Bill Hunt and Steve Grisetti for anchoring this Adobe Pre E Forum. Your advice has motivated me to take my video editing with Premiere Elements to another level.
Speaking of advice, what does everyone think of the following specifications for my new computer? Is this a solid computer for video editing? In some cases some components lack specificity (model numbers, brand names, et cetera). Suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated as I take this final step. Thanks to all!
    ATX Antec     193 Computer Case
    X58 ASUS      Motherboard
    Core      i7- 930 Processor (1366)
    700W     OCZ Power Supply

I read your computer spec sheet. Thanks for sharing. You  said the ideal thing to do is use the computer just for video editing.  Best way to go. However, you still need an OS, which requires updates.  And you need to update drivers, and then there are product updates and  add-ons. You need to connect with the Internet to do all of this
I do not have $$ or space to have 2 computers, so my single computer is for day to day work, and video editing as a hobbyist... which of course is not "ideal" for video editing... but I don't make $$ at this, so I use what I have
I am still learning about Win7 64bit, so do not have all the startup process optimized... that is my next project, to figure out what does not need to be running, and remove that un-needed stuff from the startup
You also asked about backup... the IMAGE program I use is mentioned in http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM#SmartOwn

  • IMac or Mac Pro for iPhoto albums and home movie editing?

I have a Mac Pro OS X 10.6.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5. This system is now obsolete for ordering iPhoto albums. I need to upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 to buy a Mac produced photo album. To upgrade iPhoto I need to buy a new Mac as my 2004 Mac Pro with 2008 Snow Leopard can't be upgraded. I will use the new Mac for email, web surfing, iPhoto, and weekend video editing. I use Final Cut Express on my current Mac Pro. I will also need to transfer videos and about 20,000 photos from my current Mac to a new one.
So, here's the question: For my needs (listed above) which is better,
    (1) iMac 27" or (2) new Mac Pro? Then, with the one chosen, how should it be configured to do my basic video editing? I have 100 hours of family video on Hi8 and VCR tapes and will edit these on Final Cut and burn them to DVD's. (I understand both iMac or Mac Pro now require an external DVD set-up.) So, which computer and how should it be configured. Looking to pay between $2500-$3500. Thanks for your help!

What video formats are you talking about? DV, HDV, etc?
Mac Pro is a better solution, regardless. Here's why: Simply upgrading an iMac HD is not enough. You do not want to capture your video to the boot drive. It's too much to ask the drive to manage the OS, your editing software, AND your media. This scenario might work - but is certainly prone to dropping frames. Ideally, you want one drive for OS + editing software & a separate drive to capture media to.
Now, since you can only have a single HD in the iMac, you're demoted to using external capture drives. So let's say you get yourself a FW800 drive for capture and then hook up your camera/deck to an available FW400 port. You'd think you're safe - and again, you may be. But the problem now is that the iMac has ONE and only ONE FireWire bus. So in theory these 2 devices: HD & Camera are battling for the same bandwidth. So you've still got a bottleneck happening.
So DV only would probably work. But it may have issues that the expandability of the Mac Pro can conquer. Hope this helps.

  • Buying a second-hand MacBook for video editing

I've been in the market for a MacBook to do some HD video editing. I found a deal through someone selling an older (non-Unibody) white MacBook with the software I need (Adobe CS4 suite). After researching this MacBook, which was released in 2008, I'm not sure if it'll perform the way I need it to.
Here's the specs of what I may be buying (some upgrades have been made):
    2.26Ghz Intel Core2Duo processor(s) with 3MB L2 (per core)cache
    4GB DDR2 PC5300 Crucial RAM
320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black 7200RPM hard drive
From what I understand, the graphics processor is an Intel GMA X3100, which I have come to understand is not a good enough GPU to do high-end things like editing and gaming.
    Here's my issue:
The system comes installed with Adobe CS4 suite, and I plan on using Premiere Pro intensively to edit 720p/1080p video shot with a Canon 7D. I've read that software like Final Cut Pro 7 requires a dedicated graphics card and not something integrated like the GMA X3100.
Right now, I can't afford a MacBook Pro, and I need a system soon. My question is, +will this system be able to handle HD video editing through Premiere (or comparable software)?+
    Any help is appreciate, thanks.

Intel's graphics chips are horrible for gaming. They're low power and provide enough functionality for the average sort of things people tend to do with computers, but they're not set up for gaming.
But another issue with this system, is that they're selling the software with it. That's always a tricky proposition. While there's nothing illegal about it, if the person decides they want to make a copy of the install discs before selling it, and then uses the software on another machine... It can lead to problems.
Honestly, if you're planning on doing video editing, I'd recommend ruling out laptops altogether. They really are poor platforms for that sort of thing. Integrated graphics are just the start of the problems. Screen size is small, resolution is generally just a touch over 720p, limited upgrade potential, you'll need some kind of external mouse because a trackpad won't cut it. Buy a Mac Mini or an iMac. You'll have more screen real estate, no worries about batteries, better upgrade potential (though not much)... Sort of bottom line is that laptops are great for things like word processing, web browsing, and maybe movie WATCHING, on the go... They are NOT desktop replacements, and video editing of any serious nature is most definitely a desktop task.

  • How do I get iMovies to see my imported videos?

Using iPad2, I purchased the iMovie app, and when I take my home movies in .mov form and import them from iTunes to the iPad, iMovies does not see any videos. Surely this app will work with existing home videos and not just videos shot wight the iPad. If the was the case I never would have bought the app in the first place, I wanted to be able to edit my family vacation videos shot with a local hd cam directly on my iPad.
Anyone know if I am doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

I figured out several things in a past 24 hrs.
iOS iMovie will see videos only from iOS camera roll.
so if camera roll app cannot read the video iMovie will that fail at that to.
Videos from iPhone 4, and 3GS are not the problem.
I am trying to get videos from my other video camera.
Interesting observation: if you copy video from Mac iMovie events (.mov file) into a iOS camera roll it will not be recognized, but when you connect iPad to your computer and open Mac iMovie and you select iPad as camera source you will be able to see that video as beeing available for export.
All these .mov files are encoded differently so unless your video encoded exactly the same way as videos from iPhone 4 or 3GS it would not show in iOS camera roll.
Anybody has other ideas on encoding and file formats for iOS iMovie.
right now iOS iMovie is useless to me since it does not support my workflow, do not even want spend time learning it.
    Please prove me wrong.

  • How do I find out the specs of an LCD TV (for the modeline)

I bought a Toshiba 37x3030D LCD-TV, and I'm planning to hook it up to the DVI-out. However, I have no idea how to find out the different specs that X needs (vsync, hsync, that sort of thing) and I can't find a readymade modeline anywhere. Is there a decent tool for this, or something?

    There's this really nice utility if you need to figure out a modeline, called gtf. Lets try 1600x1200@85;
    [pelle@pelle-desktop ~]$ gtf 1600 1200 85
    # 1600x1200 @ 85.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 107.10 kHz; pclk: 234.76 MHz
    Modeline "1600x1200_85.00" 234.76 1600 1720 1896 2192 1200 1201 1204 1260 -HSync +Vsync
[edit] if you use any kind of modern monitor, you can leave the vertical and horizontal refresh rates out. These should be automatically detected.[/edit]
btw, i can even start X *without* an xorg.conf, so i was rather surprised you actually needed a modeline for your monitor...

  • HOW TO PREPARE TECH SPEC FOR OOPS PROGRAM

    Hi..
This is Sri .I Created a Report program in oops. can any one help how to prepare tech spec for this oops report,,can i need to mention Classes ,Methods, ref-classes,screens in preparation of Spec..
Thanks in advance..I surly reward with points if my prob is solved,,,,,,
    SRI

    Hi Sri,
Tech Spec is nothing but a document containing some technical information about
the object you have developed/coded. Normally this should be prepared before you code and not the other way round.
You should mention relevant classes created / used. If you have created / added some class components like attributes/methods/events/interfaces mention that too.
You can also mention functionality to be coded in methods of the class. Please understand it is not a replica of your program but some useful technical info that the coder will use to code and later people will use for maintainance purpose.
It is better if you have some defined template for the tech spec, else just put the info in a structured and readable manner.
    Regards
    Indrajit.
