How is wireless connectivity supposed to work for HP wireless printers?

Does anyone know of any white papers, or similar, that describe how an HP  wireless printer is supposed to establish connection, 1) for initial setup, 2) for regular use after installation?  Trying to understand the process from experience, mine & others, without access to an analyser doesn't provide definitive answers.  It's a lot easier to solve a problem when you know how it's supposed to work . (and preventing them in the first place)
Initial setup appears to use the IP address for establishing connection, but for subsequent use there would seem to be a number of ways that fit the behaviour .  Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks TreeFrog.
My printer is a P1102w, and the support CD labelled P1100/P1560/P1600 series, so I guess any comment about the P1102w would be applicable to the 1560 & 1600s as well.  But it could also be useful to other printers with varying degrees of relevance.  Thats why I reckon a document discussing principles and ranges of devices they apply to could be useful (eg. "this method of connection was introduced in year x and not applicable printers before then, or something like that " .)    I also know that reading manuals is rare but I've found in the past that all sorts of useful interesting stuff can surface unexpectedly (the unknown unknowns of IT!).
The specific question I have relates to sending a print after the initial connection has been established and Smart Install has been completed.  Do subsequent connections depend primarily on the IP address, or is some other method of identification used, such as MAC address or device id?
If the IP address based on the dynamic DHCP request is used then this has implications in the event that the DHCP table on the DHCP service/router is reset, say in the event of a power or device reset.  Where such resets are frequent then it may be worth using an IP address determined some other way, such as a Manual(locked)-DHCP (if supported) or static (providing a static address outside the DHCP range can be found).
Thanks for your help.

  • MBA dropping wireless connection, workaround that works for me

    I have a brand new Macbook air 1.6HD that I purchased two days ago, and observed the issues with the wireless signal dropping out during regular web browsing activity, as often as every 3-5 minutes. I did not migrate settings from a previous machine, and have both a mac mini and thinkpad in the house which work without issues. The wireless AP (a linksys wrtg) has no WPA/WEP settings active, and is using a wireless channel that nobody else in the neighborhood is using according to my scanner.
    I wondered why certain activities like streaming a video or downloading a file never seemed to drop in the middle, whereas if I was browsing the web it would drop while reading pages during the time when nothing much was happening. I would download a few pages, and then when clicking a link I was suddenly being sent to the "internet connection has dropped" page in Safari, and the airport icon in the menubar showed no signal, until I went up and reconnected once again to my AP.
    So, I opened up a terminal window and started a ping to a host outside my network, a DNS server that is always reachable: "ping 128.95.112.1". Whenever this ping session is running, I do not seem to drop the wireless signal, and the behavior is normal. I have tested this on several different wireless points including the wireless at my work and at a local Starbucks, however if I interrupt the pings and just use the laptop as normal, it returns to the previous behavior and the wireless AP again "drops" only to be found again when I reconnect via the option in the menu bar.
    Something about constantly keeping the connection busy with these constant small packets seems to keep the laptop from "forgetting" the association to the AP. This workaround may work for some of the others out there seeing the same issue. It would be nice for Apple to fix or acknowledge whatever driver issue or design problem is causing the Air to have this problem, since the Mac Mini and other laptops in the house are clearly not having the problem, and it is limited to this new hardware.

    That sounds like the 'keep alive' is way too low.
    it sounds like a protocol/operating system issue based on how you describe it. (however if your other macs are on the same OS ver . . . then . . . never mind.)
    Does pinging the loopback keep the laptop from "forgetting" the association to the AP? (If so you may be able to set up a small script and add if to your login startup items. . . as a work around. just an idea.)

    Have you worked through the Troubleshooting iOS and WiFi knowledge base article?  If not, see if there is info in there that might help.
    Is the WiFi greyed out on all WiFi networks or just the one?  If it does this on all then there may be a hardwaer problem that needs attention from the techs at an Apple store genius bar.
    Before that, however, try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears.  That clears a lot of iOS hang ups that occur.

  • HP1102w wireless connection setup not working

    Followed, re-followed and re-installed the drivers from the website.  Turned off firewalls.  All other wireless devices in the household work EXCEPT this one.   Blue light flashes for awhile, then shuts off.  Note: Wired connection via usb works, just not wireless.  This is for SAMSUNG laptop model NP47...series

    Hi @d78d ,
    I see that you are experiencing issues setting up the printer over the wireless network. I will certainly do my best to help you.
    Reset the printer first to clear out any previous network settings.
    Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.
    Print out a configuration report and make sure the SSID and IPv4 address are cleared.
    Printing a Configuration Page.
    Power cycle the router, turn the printer off and the computer. Then once the router is back up again, turn the computer on and then the printer.
    Make sure the computer is connected to the proper network and check your network encryption.
    How to Find the WEP or WPA Key or Password for Your Wireless Network.
    Here are some settings to check on the router:
    If it is set to 5 GHZ network, you may need to change to 2.4 GHZ for the printer to work. (rename the 5ghz or shut it off)
    The WPA key setting needs to be on AES to work correctly not TKIP.
    If you use Mac address on the router, you will have to add the printer.
    Make sure there are no spaces or special characters being used for the network name, the printer may not recognize it.
    Connect the USB cable from the printer to the computer.
    Now to configure the wireless, access the HP Software, select the P1102w, then select Wireless Configuration.
    (To launch your applications, go to the Start Screen by pointing your mouse pointer to the left hand corner of the Windows 8 screen and click it) Run through the steps to configure the wireless.
    Then disconnect the USB cable.
    Test the printer.
    If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!

  • How's Adobe Media Encoder CS5 working for you?

    This is the first thread on the new Adobe Media Encoder forum, so I thought that it would be appropriate to open it up by just asking a general question:
    How is Adobe Media Encoder CS5 working for you?
    Please be sure to install the Adobe Media Encoder CS5 (5.0.1) update. Instructions for updating are included in this post about the Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.2) update.
    If you're having a specific problem that you want help with, or if you have a specific question, please start your own thread on this forum. This thread is intended for general feedback about how Adobe Media Encoder CS5 is working out for you.

    First of all IT IS GREAT and I use it a lot I also used the CS4 version before!
    But I have to report two issues about version CS5:
    1. I bought the English version of the production premium CS5 but I have a German operating system (win7 64bit) all other adobe application are in English except Adobe Media Encoder it shows up in German language! Not a show stopper but should be fixed.
    2. Recently I wanted to encode a video into an h264. I made some custom settings for that and the encoded video played very stuttered in Microsoft Media Player 12 (like 12fps instead of 25fps [settings were set correct in AME]) but fine in Quicktime and VLC Player (execpt for the gamma bug but that's an other story...)
    I did a lot of testings and found the issue! Sometimes when you change a lot of the h264 settings (don't know when it happens exactly) Media Encoder seems to not set the fps correctly allthough AME shows 25fps in it's settings this setting is not encoded into the final file!
    Quicktime and VLC seems not to care about the missing information but Windows Media Player gets confused.
    It does not happens when using a preset in AME it only happens when changing a lot and using custom settings!
    You can see the missing fps setting when right clicking the encoded file and choose properties (german:Eigenschaften) switch the tap to Details and there is no fps setting in the stuttering files but when encoded with a preset in AME there is the correct 25fps setting!
    I have attached a screenshots to demonstrate it:
    My workaround so far was to choose a preset with 25fps and close to my desired settings and change as few as possible - Fingers crosses and with a chance of 3/4 I was able to encode a working file containing the fps setting in it which plays perfect in Microsoft Media Player!
    I hope you take a look into this issue because if you have a long file and you have to encode it again because it fails....... uiuiui
    Thanks Todd for the possibility to give this direct feedback to Adobe
    This is real support!

  • How do I get sound to work  for games...?

    How do I get sound to work for game apps, when I have sound for other items on ipad2?

    Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
    Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • How class.getResourceAsStream() is supposed to work?

    here is what I am trying to do:
    public class FileTest {
         public static void main(String[] argv) {
              //this opens the file, no problem:
              try {
                   Scanner in = new Scanner(new File("myfile.properties"));
              } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              //null here:
              InputStream is = FileTest.class.getResourceAsStream("myfile.properties");
    The InputStream variable is null after executing the last line of code.
    Documentations says that getResourceAsStream "Finds a resource with a given name..." But it looks like it doesn't. Am I having the wrong idea on how class.getResourceAsStream() is supposed to work?

    It find resources in the classpath. If the "resource" you enter does not begin with a slant ( / ) then it "starts looking" in the same package as the class used to make the call. If it does start with a slant ( / ), then it "starts looking" at the varying classpath "roots", as amply explained in the API docs.

  • My wireless keyboard won't work for one of the users

    All of a sudden the wireless keyboard stopped working for me, but it works when my wife logs in.  I had to create a new account for myself and the keyboard now works.  However, the keyboard won't work for my original account. Any thoughts?

  • How do I connect my printer to a new wireless network?

    I currently have a MacBook Pro and HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-one printer. I have had the printer a long time, and have since lost the cable to connect it to my laptop, and any paperwork or cds recieved with it.
    I have been unable to figure out how to change my printer's settings so it is connected to my new house's wireless network, the wireless test report showed it is trying to connect to my old one in another town. I have a usb cable I can borrow to hook the printer up to my laptop, but would like to be able to just print wirelessly. Is there any way to do so?

    If you want to change your existing connection to a wireless network, follow these instructions.
    Open HP Device Manager.
    Figure 5: HP Device Manager icon
    From the Information and Settings drop-down menu, click Setup Assistant .
    The HP Setup Assistant window opens.
    Follow the on-screen instructions to change your connection type to an existing wireless network.
