How much can high ISO RAWs really be improved?

Hi everyone,
I've taken some test pictures with my new Panasonic FZ150, some of them in difficult conditions (night and/or lens at full tele) and at various ISOs. I then tried to see how much of an improvement can be brought about by the processed RAW file, in comparison with the JPG that was produced by the camera at the same time. I did this test because, in my opinion, the JPGs of the FZ150 at high ISO are too noisy to be of any use, and to see whether the (already good) low ISO ones can be improved even further.
Howver, after playing around with the Develop settings in LightRoom 3 (lum/hue NR, sharpness, detail, etc), I did not manage to get the RAWs to really look any better than their JPG counterparts, at least in terms of the trade-off between noise and detail. So I am now wondering if this is really the limit of the camera's RAW pics and/or of LightRoom (in other words: whether it's worth even bothering with RAW), or whether I am simply not using LightRoom skillfully enough!
Therefore, if anyone enjoys a RAW challenge, I'd be very curious to see just how good the following RAWs can be processed to become, particularly the high ISO ones. Many thanks in advance!

Been playing around with LR some more, as well as with RawTherapee, but still can't obtain a significant improvement in terms of noise/detail. Any input from more experienced RAW users out there would be very much appreciated

  • How much can high temperature contrib. to KPs/freezes??

    So I've been using G4s for years, my first--my beloved 2000-model Ethernet Firewire--was my introduction to modern desktop Macs, and served me well for nearly 7 years, until the depressing crash of its internal/boot drive necessitated I move on. A family member who was upgrading themselves gave me their old 2002-era noisy Mirrored Door G4 recently, and I in turn upgraded it to the last installment of Tiger (I hope that it'll tide me over until I can upgrade to a newer Powerbook or iMac running Leopard within the year).
    However, with the inheritance of this newer G4--and in particular, upgrading to Tiger--I was introduced to a variety of new problems: freezing, and the dreaded Kernal Panic warning. I've been trying to troubleshoot, but it's difficult because there are a lot of variables.
    However, one possible factor that I don't want to rule out is temperature. Every time I pull this G4 out, it's running really hot (which doesn't seem to make sense, since as LOUD as the fan is, you'd hope it'd be working). So for all I know, part of the problems could simply be due to this thing overheating. Is that likely? I had been assuming it was a RAM problem--incompatible/insufficient--and had been considering adding more, but don't want to do so if it's just going to get fried...
    I remember hearing that Apple offered a fan & power replacement supply plan for this particular model, but have NO idea if I can utilize that now. And THIS website says it has a firmware download to help reduce high fan speeds, but I think that was only while using OS9...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120171
    Do you have any ideas? Any suggestions on WHERE to place the computer, additional fans/devices I can use to keep it cool? (assuming that this fan/power replacement supply is unavailable).
    Help!!!

    Thanks again, I guess I was just naively overlooking the 3.5.2 package... duh.
    Yeah I called Apple Care, they were actually fairly helpful, and suggested that the 256 mb RAM alone would be enough to run Tiger, so less and less am I suspecting that RAM is an issue...
    That Temperature Monitor program was really helpful too, showed that my computer was averaging around 57-58 degrees shortly after activation... yikes. Even after I put it to sleep for an hour or so, after I reactivated it, it shot back up from the 31-32 degrees in its inert state to 50 or so.
    But I Deinstalled (fortuately wasn't anything to deinstall), and the Hardware Tools switch did show up in Preferences, like you said. Fortunately, even WITHOUT changing a single one of the settings--well, that's not entirely true, I switched it to Dual CPU, which my computer is--the temperature seems to be remaining around 43 degrees or so, so already something's working. But, do you have any suggestions on how to further adjust it? I ask, because I see pull-downs for the L2 & L3 caches...
    Also, what about any of the other programs that showed up in the CHUD folder--BigTop, MONster, Saturn, Shark--can any of THOSE help me?? At the very least, the Spindown HD one in Hardware Tools looks relevant....
    Anyway, if you have any further suggestions on how to help keep this computer cool, I'd really appreciate it. Though I may not currently be up to the task of doing anything like that PCI slot fan, or the thermal compound, I'm not adverse to learning more (certainly troubleshooting this whole issue has already been pretty educational). That xlr8yourmac had some interesting suggestions, but only a few of which I think I'd be qualified to try (certainly any soldering is outside my capabilities, and I'm not even going to TRY to touch on the guy who irrigated his G4 with cool water...).

  • How much can the iPod Touch really hold?

    Suddenly my 16GB iPod touch could hold 3000 of my photos, 40 videos and 4500 of my songs. But the album artwork was all wrong so I made the stupid decision of restoring my iPod.
    Now I can only fit 2500 photos, home videos which are pretty weak on the MB and I had to compromise the 4500 songs to 4055.
    What happened?

    yeah it seems that the first restore left some fragmented files or somthing on your touch takin up some space. Another restore couldnt hurt and if it leaves more unuseable space you should look into a replacement cause it looks like a bug.

    Hi,
    Are we sure that a voice memo can only be 35 minutes long? I only ask as I'm about to start Uni and was quite keen to use the voice memo feature to record lectures (which are definitely longer than 35mins).
    Just to test (as I've never really used mine before) I might leave mine running tonight and see when it cuts out/stops.
    BTW, what's iTalk....and how do I get it???
    Thanks :o)

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

    How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
    I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

    You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • How much computing horsepower do I really need to use iMovie?

    How much computing horsepower do I really need to use iMovie effectively?  I'm trying to make a one-hour movie from HD camcorder clips and still images.  My iMac 24 with Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.33 GHz and 2 GB of RAM severely bogs down and regularly locks up or crashes.  Now that I've painfully managed to insert all of the video clips and still images, my iMac won't play the video back smoothly so that I can edit the work.  Within a second or two, the video either stops or becomes extremely jerky, while the audio continues to play.
    Do I really need an $8000 MacPro 12-Core computer running at 3.3 GHz, with 32 GB of RAM, twin, 2 TB hard drives, and a $1000 27-inch Apple display, or will something less costly work fine for producing videos?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Joe

    Thanks for your reply, Klaus1.  I'm currently running Snow Leopard.  I'd considered upgrading to Lion but was told, even by Apple, that I wouldn't be satisfied with its slow performance on my iMac 24.
    I have plenty of hard drive space with 160 GB available on my internal hard drive, but I've been storing the archived video clips and the iMovie projects on a fire-wired, external 2 TB drive.  Could it be that using an external hard drive for the iMovie project is part of the performance problem?
    A quick check on the Apple website shows that my iMac 24, which was manufactured in mid-2007, can support up to 4 GB of RAM.  I wonder if I should consider a RAM upgrade before upgrading the entire computer.  How big a deal is it to replace RAM in the iMacs?

    I know that you need to be an Enterprise user to have completely customized storefronts, but how much can you customize Professional user storefronts? What do they look like? Most magazines I've seen are Enterprise level

    With a Professional account, you cannot customize the storefront. If you create a subscription app, you can specify subscription tiles and indicate with subscription durations are available, but that's about it.

  • Kernel Memory limits. How much can it usefully use?

    I just wanted to check something.
    Obviously the Linux kernel can handle a lot of memory, but the question is how much can it usefully use before it needs to be specially compiled?
    I need to build a server to clean email, and because it is very very busy, (well the last one was and so is its stand in) it will need 4GB of RAM as an absolute minimum but I would like to put in 8. If I go for 8, do I need to rebuild the kernel?
    Kind regards
    Benedict White

    If you install Arch64 and use the normal kernel package -- no. You won't touch the RAM limit for some decades to come.

    What is "kali tools"? If you want help from others, you need to give information. We're not psychics. Generally you install packages using pacman (either from the repos, using ABS or using the AUR). If this is something specific to Kali linux, it probably is not available for Arch Linux. But without information about exactly what you're talking about, it's hard to say.
