How much RAM can CS5 access?

I will be buying a new computer and am trying to decide how much RAM to put on it. I, also, just purchased CS5, but I am not sure how much RAM it can access. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Depends on the applications. With Win 64 Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects can access anything you throw at it.
The rest are 32 bit apps and can only access two gigs max.

  • Photoshop CS6 on a Mac Pro 1,1 - how much RAM can it access?

    Hi everybody,
After reading many related threads, I have gathered that the MP 1,1 has 64bit architecture, but only runs a 32bit kernel. Will this limit PS CS6 accessing all the RAM (currently 13 GB) on my MP 1,1?
    Many thanks!

There are still benefits to more RAM when working with files that can grow or take up more memory even though you are not using 64-bit kernel, but still able to run CS6 as a 64-bit application.
people have outfitted their MacPro1,1 with more than 16GB to full 32GB to improve performance. That along with SSD for scratch and another for system (or use an array for scratch, though memory is your best "scratch") and of course an array for loading files and for your save volume (2GB files taking too many seconds?).

  • Okay, how much Ram can CS4 access?

I saw the other note about Photoshop 7.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate with CS4, along with 12 gigs of RAM and an internal D drive for a scratch disk.
I have Alien Skin's Eye Candy 6 loaded in the 64 bit section of Photoshop.
A while back, I noticed I was getting an error when trying to use Eye Candy 6, saying it was unable to generate the previews.
Today, I left a message with tech support and they called back. After hearing I had 12 gigs of ram and 70% of it allocated to PS4, he had me lower it to 50%, then had me make a change in Eye Candy to process based on more ram. It worked afterwards.
The tech support guy told me PS4 cannot service more than 4 gigs of ram, but the system will run much faster because PS will use all 4 gigs and let the remaining ram be used by other programs.
Eye Candy 6 has been the only 64 bit program or plug-in that has had a hick-up on this system.
Any insights would be appreciated. Am I paying a penalty performance wise by having my PS preference set back to 50% to run the plug-in?
    Thanks in advance,
    M. Jackson

    Hi Zeno,
I guess I was going at it the other direction. I may have a couple other programs open when I have Photoshop running, so I allocated the bulk of my ram to PS...75% or so originally. Eye Candy 6 has been the only plug-in to snag with that setting. I'll leave it at 50% for a while and see if the programs seems to handle things just as well since I use the Eye Candy filters fairly often. The tech support guy told me it was Photoshop's bottleneck and not theirs. That's what prompted the question here. I spent quite a bit extra to get more ram so I wouldn't get bottlenecks!

  • How much ram can my iMac take?

Hi all, just bought a iMac a few days ago and I'm just wondering how much ram can it take as I want to upgrade it. It didnt come with a manual, so I don't know.
    Here's the spec so far
    Early 2008 20"
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
Thanks for any help in advance

There are two answers: the official Apple answer and the "you're on your own" answer.
1 - For the official iMac max RAM, see iMac Memory specifications and upgrades
2 - For the "your're on your own" answer, everymac.com has a list of the Actual Maximum RAM you can put in every model Mac.  In many cases this is more than the official maximum RAM.
After deciding how much RAM you want to put in your iMac, I suggest going to Crucial.com and use the memory advisor or system scanner to see what RAM modules are compatible with your iMac.

  • How much ram can I put  In a 12" 867MHZ?

    Hi,
I've just picked up a 12" 867mhz Powerbook for a very reasonable price! My question is how much ram can i put in it? It currently has 640mb. Also if i can put some more in it will it run Leopard?

Bear in mind you can customise the install of Leopard to exclude some languages and particularly exclude printer drivers that aren't relevant to you, this will substantially lower the total required space. 12" Powerbooks are rather fiddly to work on - here's a really thorough guide on Hard drive replacement etc. for your Powerbook:

    Hello miss_papaya
That model supports 2 4GB modules for a total of 8GB, only problem is that 4GB modules are currently at a premium price. Have a look at the spec's in the following article or in the User's Guide that came with your iMac.

  • How much RAM can PS CS4e use in Mac OS 10.5.x?

I've tried to track this down from a number of places, but can't get an answer. I'm assuming the same as CS3e, which is a little over 3 GB.
I'm getting ready to build a new MacPro and I need to decide how much RAM to add initially. I'm a Mac tech, so pretty good at building kick-but systems, but I don't have CS4e yet, so can't figure this one out for myself. I usually max out my systems, but I don't think I can really utilize a full 32 GB of RAM with CS4 suite, but perhaps CS5. No sense in getting more RAM at this point in time, when I could use those dollars for good glass to take more pictures with! ;-)
And FYI, real PS performance comes from using 10K rpm drives for startup/apps and a second one for Scratch.

    Jerry,
That's a very important Tech Note. Thank you for pointing it out.
    EXCERPT:
    Allocating Memory with 64-bit Processors
Photoshop can directly access 3.5 GB of RAM when run on Mac OS (10.4.11 or later). If you have additional RAM on your computer, the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system. If you are working with files large enough to take advantage of these extra 2 GB of RAM, the RAM cache can increase performance of Photoshop.
When you run Photoshop CS4 on a 64-bit operating system Photoshop can access up to 8 GB of RAM. You can see the actual amount of RAM Photoshop can use in the Let Photoshop Use number when you set the Let Photoshop Use slider in the Performance preference to 100%. The RAM above the 100% used by Photoshop, which is from approximately 3 GB to 3.7 GB, can be used directly by Photoshop plug-ins (some plug-ins need large chunks of contiguous RAM), filters, and actions. If you have more than 4 GB (to 8 GB), the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system. If you are working with files large enough to take advantage of that extra RAM, the RAM cache can increase performance of Photoshop.

  • How much RAM can I put into my Macbook Pro?

    Here's my info:

I want to upgrade my RAM, as the computer is showing a bit of age at 3 years old now.  I looked at this support page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link8
And judged the installation to be easy enough for me to do, but I'm confused as to how much RAM I can buy.  The conflict I see is that "Additional notes" says I can use up to 8GB of RAM, but the table says only 4GB.  What's throwing me off is basic math -- is that 4GB only referring to my slots (thus 4+4=8) or is it saying that anything over 4GB will not be recognized by my computer?
I spoke with someone at Apple, but he seemed a bit confused by my question, and eventually gave me a "yes" that was timid enough that I felt the need to post here.  So, I'd appreciate the support!  Thanks a lot, everyone.  I'm just looking to not spend more than I need (in terms of buying excess RAM), and make sure I don't ruin my Mac in the process.

The MacBook Pro 4,1 can acces a maximum RAM of 6GB
However RAM comes in 4GB modules and you have two slots, so you install 8GB (two 4GB modules) and can only access 6GB of it according to MacTracker.
Use the free Crucial.com site to make sure your getting the extact specified RAM specs, you can buy it anywhere if you like.

  • How much ram can my MBP support?

First of all, there are two slots for RAM in a MBP, right?
Is there a limit to how much each can support, and a total limit for both?
I just discovered an article on DIGG about 8 GB sticks of RAM, and it got me thinking.

The actual amount of RAM depends on the specific model, since you don't mention that, it's impossible to tell.
However, I can tell you that currently the most any MacBook Pro supports is 4GB of RAM - two 2GB DIMMs.
I don't know the Digg article you're referring to, but it's highly unlikely that it's referring to laptop memory. It's likely to be full-sized DIMMs where space and power consumption are less important factors (all laptops use low-profile DIMMs which consume less power and take up less space than DIMMs used in desktop computers).
