How much Ram do I need in a MacBook Pro for Software Engineering?

I plan to buy a new MacBook Pro in the next month for school and hopefully for work. I would like this computer to get me at least 4 years of use. I will be majoring in software engineering. My question is how much ram would I need in a Macbook Pro for software engineering? I am currenty looking at the 15" 2.3ghz base model with 8gb of ram as well as the 15" 2.4ghz base model retina. I really like the retina but its at my max budget. Will the 8gb of ram be enough since it is not upgradable? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am currenty looking at the 15" 2.3ghz base model with 8gb of ram
The MB Pro 15" 2.3Ghz with 8GB of RAM should do the trick.
Save your $$$ on the retina and stick to your budget

  • How Much RAM Do I Need in a Mac Pro to edit together hour-long videos for our church?

We need a new computer to edit video together for our services at church.  We broadcast these videos each week, so we use our editing computer quite a bit.  We also produce shorter videos for use online and in our services.  Looking at moving to a Mac, and I'm not quite sure how much RAM we should purchase in a Mac Pro to avoid long rendering times.  Obviously, we need to keep costs as low as possible, but we want something that will work, and last for a while.  Thanks!

The fastest 6-core is the "sweet spot" in the lineup. near twice the compute power of the entry model at only 1.5 times the cost.
6GB is fine for "regular" stuff you do on a Mac. Video editing without pain often requires more ... up to as much as 24GB if you can afford it. Apple's prices for this are quite high (like a convenience store). Many folks buy aftermarket RAM from Mac-centric vendors who can tell Users what modules will work in their Mac -- "guaranteed or your money back".
You can run as few as a single RAM module in 2009 and later Macs. So when adding, choose the densest modules you think you might EVER need, to avoid throwing away less-dense modules later.
You also will need at least one drive (preferably two) in addition to the Boot drive. Paging and program access to the boot drive wrecks drive access for User data.
You also need a Backup Drive. Big (but can be really slow).

  • How much Ram can I add to my MacBook Pro?

Another non-techie here with a memory question
How much RAM can I add to my MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,1
    MacBook Pro (late 2006)
Processor 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Current memory: 2GB (two SO-DIMMs) 667 MHz DDRs SDRAM (PC2-5300)
The actual installation sounds quite simple.  I just want to be sure I get the right chips.  Any sources you can recommend?
    TIA

  • How Much Ram Do I Need To Run Logic Pro 9

    Howdy.
I'm getting ready to do some recording and editing in Logic Pro 9. I'm running a 2011 iMac
    2.7 GHz Intel Cor iS
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    I TB HD
    OSX 10.6.8
Is 8 GB enough memory for Logic, or should I bump it up to 16 GB?
    Thanks!

To answer your question... Much of what I do invoves "raiding" the loop library and piecing things together. As time goes on, I'm getting more & more into original "progressive" type stuff. I'm not in a band nor am I affiliated with any other musicians, so I heavily dependent on loops.
I haven't had any memory issues (yet), but I just read something about freezing tracks taking some of the load off of memory.
If you're using mostly loops you have plenty of RAM.
Also, if you're not laying down a bunch of recorded audio tracks.. (like recording a band) your single TB hard drive should do fine. Freezing comes into play when the CPU is nearing load limit because of heavy use of software instruments and effects that demand a lot of CPU.
I would say for what you're doing at this time, your system is fine as it is.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.. if/when you run into a problem then deal with it, it's not like you're operating a commercial studio.
My suggestion would be to learn how to use Logic's effects correctly.. (Reverbs, Compressors, EQ, Delay...etc)
Use a Reverb or Delay on a bus, then several tracks and use the same effect, if you use all effects as inserts you're wasting CPU.
Learning how to use your system (as is) is FAR more important than how much RAM, what model Mac or how fast your CPU is.
A good engineer can make a world class recording in Garageband. Don't get to caught up in what you have or don't have.. have fun, be creative.

  • How much RAM can I put into my Macbook Pro?

    Here's my info:
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
I want to upgrade my RAM, as the computer is showing a bit of age at 3 years old now.  I looked at this support page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link8
And judged the installation to be easy enough for me to do, but I'm confused as to how much RAM I can buy.  The conflict I see is that "Additional notes" says I can use up to 8GB of RAM, but the table says only 4GB.  What's throwing me off is basic math -- is that 4GB only referring to my slots (thus 4+4=8) or is it saying that anything over 4GB will not be recognized by my computer?
I spoke with someone at Apple, but he seemed a bit confused by my question, and eventually gave me a "yes" that was timid enough that I felt the need to post here.  So, I'd appreciate the support!  Thanks a lot, everyone.  I'm just looking to not spend more than I need (in terms of buying excess RAM), and make sure I don't ruin my Mac in the process.

The MacBook Pro 4,1 can acces a maximum RAM of 6GB
However RAM comes in 4GB modules and you have two slots, so you install 8GB (two 4GB modules) and can only access 6GB of it according to MacTracker.
Use the free Crucial.com site to make sure your getting the extact specified RAM specs, you can buy it anywhere if you like.

  • How much RAM can i put in my MacBook Pro 13inch?8GB or 16GB?

I want to upgrade the RAM in my MacBook Pro and wanted to know how much is possible technically. I read 16GB are possible but Apple says 8GB optional. What is right?16GB or 8GB

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Apple says that it only supports 8 GB of memory, but the truth is that you can install up to 16 GB (2x8 GB) of memory on a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.
If you want 16 GB of memory, you can buy memory in OWC or Crucial (Crucial is cheaper and offers the same compatibility as OWC). If you need help installing memory > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link1

  • How much RAM can I put in my Macbook Pro (late 2006), and how much will it cost me?

I am currently running at a:
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM in Memory
ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB in Graphics
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) in Software
& it's a 15inch Macbook Pro incapable of upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I know i have a lot of limitations due to the age of this mac, but I would like
to know as to how far I can go with the one that I have. Please help.

Your MBP will be able to use a maximum of 3 Gb RAM.  The exact specifications are: 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  Best sources are Crucial and OWC.  Their websites will have the prices.
Snow Leopard is an excellent OS.  I have it on my 2010 MBP and have no intention of installing Lion/Mt Lion.  It is stable and efficient, more so than the newer ones.  Do not view that as a handicap.
You might also consider installing a larger HDD.  Your MBP can handle the largest ones available to day (1 Tb).  For a pre-unibody MBP, it is a bit harder than the current crop but achievable of you have rudimentary mechanical skills and a bit of patience.  See the OWC website for excellent how to do it videos.
    Ciao.

  • How much RAM can I install on my MacBook Pro?

I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM on my MacBook Pro 13-inch Late 2012 Non-Retina with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 chip in it. I currently have 4GB of RAM in it (2x4) and I want to upgrade to 16GB of RAM (2x8). Can I do this upgrade?

Sure, you can remove the Ram that you have and replace it with 2 x 8GB chips. Macs are picky about Ram, buy it from OWC, or Crucial.

  • How much ram can i upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro running 2.26ghz

i currently upgrade my MacBook Pro mid 2009 with 2x 4GHZ 1066 mhz ddr3 and keeps on quitting while I'm using it. why?

What brand of RAM did you purchase?
Have you taken out the modules , cleaned the contacts and reinstalled them?
Have you tried the original RAM?
Have you run an Apple hardware Test?

Note an error free AHT is not definitive.

  • How much ram can you put in a Macbook Pro 7,1?

I have what I thought was 2011 macbook pro, but when I just looked it up the 7,1 appears to be a 2010. Anyway, I want to max out the ram. OWC says you can put in 16GB of the DDR3 1066MHz SO-DIMM; here is the link: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/8566DDR3S16P/ Has anyone done this and does it work?

If OWC says it will work, it will work.  The 2010 13" MBP can accept 16 GB RAM due to a relatively new firmware update.  Other 2010 MBPs cannot (still).
    Ciao.
Carefull on the specifications!  They should be:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.

  • How much RAM can I install in my Macbook Pro?

    I have a late 2011 model Macbook Pro. It is a 13 inch with 2.8 Ghz Intel i7 duo core processor and 4 GB (2 x 2) RAM. Can I upgrade to 16 GB (2 x 8) RAM?

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
    2011 models must use:
    •204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    And 2012 models must use:
    •204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    So here's the video:
Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only three 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Corsair, Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • How much RAM will I need?

Considering buying a Macbook Pro, but I wanted to ask around and find out approximatly how much RAM I would need so that I dont get a model thats too powerful or too weak for my usage. I was considering 4 Gbs but im not sure if thats enough.
What im mainly planning to do on the Macbook is:
    internet browsing (chrome, safari etc)
    Mail app
Word processing software like Microsoft word
    Eclipse (java programming)
    skype
    utorrent
Say I have all these programs running at the same time, how much RAM will I need to have?

Oh also, I just remembered wanting to ask this, have you ever tried downloading an OS update for a macbook and apple wont let you because you have outdated technology? Like trying to download ios 7 on an iphone 3G for example.
I've had that exact problem - someone gave me what was, supposedly, an iPhone 4s but turned out to be a 3Gs. Couldn't update to iOS 7.x so it just sits on my desk right now.
And when I had my MacBook Pro (1,1 2006 model) I couldn't upgrade to Lion - was 'stuck with' Snow Leopard.
O'd technology that no longer plays nice with new OS's? Time to get a new machine.

  • How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with?

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.
Are their any other options that I'll want to make sure that I get?
Oh, and this will also be my very first Mac.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

In the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.
