How necessary is it to sleep the mini?

I just bought my parents a mini with a beautiful 19" flat panel display.
They adore the "flurry" screensaver. They like it to run all the time.
How necessary is it to sleep the mini? Are there any reasons I shouldn't just set the computer and monitor to never sleep and let the screensaver run?

There is no need to ever sleep a desktop Mac. I set my desktops Macs to never sleep the computer, sleep the monitor after 10-20 minutes & put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible. I do sleep my laptops by closing the lid, never through the Apple menu. I have had problems since at least OS 8 with Macs not waking from sleep, being "comatose," & needing to hold down the power button to shut the Mac off then restart. The laptops rarely exhibit this behavior. I wouldn't set the monitor to never sleep, though. It won't hurt anything, but the monitor, even a flat-panel, uses more energy than any component.

  • How do I get photos OFF the mini iPad?

How do I get my photos OFF my iPad mini so I can print them?...please

The Dropbox app has a very cool auto-upload process that will automatically upload photos from the iPad Camera Roll to Dropbox.
First sign up for a free Dropbox account from your computer.
Then, download the free Dropbox app on your iPad.
Log in to the Dropbox app on the iPad with your new account and click on the Photos icon in the lower left corner of the screen (second one from the left).
Select "Enable Camera Upload" and "Only Wi-Fi." The upload process will begin for all existing photos in the Camera Roll.
From now on, all future photos taken by the iPad will automatically upload to the Dropbox folder. You can then download your photos from Dropbox to your computer by going to http://www.dropbox.com, logging in to your account, and downloading the photos. You can then put the photos on a USB drive or burn to a CD or upload them to a photo processing website.
    Hope this helps!

  • Unforeseen benefit of migrating to the mini

I just got my electric bill today and it was lower than normal. I realized that this month I have been running my Mac mini (85 Watts) 24/7 as a webserver which replaced my dual 800MHz G4 (338 Watts) which I had been running for 2 years as a webserver.
Imagining that each computer was running at full blast for 24 hours that would be 2,040 Watthours each day for the mini and 8,112 Watthours each day for the dual 800. This makes a difference of about 6,000 Watthours per day. Ergo, I would save a maximum of 180 kWH per month by running the mini instead of the dual 800. If a 500 kWH bill runs about $100 then it is about a savings of $36 each month.
Now, I am sure that the two computers were not running at full power all the time, but still, there is some savings going on. In addition, the mini takes up much less space than the dual 800 and is much quieter. I couldn't be happier.

Electrical Watts is a measurement of potential energy store capacity to be provided by the device in question. 85 Watts is the maximum of the power supply. You will have to adjust your calculations downward. A typical power draw of a mini performing standard office/browsing tasks will be close to 20Watts, performing MPEG decoding and DVD playback pushes it up closer to 35Watts under heavy load. Now just add in the actual power draw of your monitor and you are set with your electrical cost calculations. I no longer run any tube monitors in the house anymore after measuring the wattage use of just one in the powered on state. All the LCDs I have running draw less than one of those monitors.
Doing nothing but idling around at the windows desktop waiting for input, my PC, still have it, draws 168Watts not including the attached monitor being powered on.
So in short always read wattage claims on devices as potential, like CPU usage percentages the actual amount fluctuates up and down in a zone somewhere below that printed amount.
Now sleeping the mini and leaving your standard brick power supply plugged into your average American home (unlike some countries which put switches on all the power outlet plugs preventing vampiric drains from brick power supplies, digital clocks and always on even though the unit shows powered off designs) you will find it takes just about as much electricity to sleep your mini than shut it down and leave it plugged in the wall. That is why I always sleep mine, the 1 second power-on back to the OS X desktop is just icing on the cake. The prolific chipset external hard drives I run also sleep and power up with the mini without any errors which is also really neat.

    18. What is the maximum resolution available for use with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter?
The resolution available with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is 1920 x 1200. VGA displays that use higher refresh rates (such as 85 Hz) at resolutions of 1600 x 1200 or greater may not generate video properly until you lower the refresh rate.

    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.
How do I select additional resolutions on my display?
You can use the Display pane of System Preferences to specify how your display works. Not all options appear for all display models. By default the best resolution for your display will already be selected in System Preferences.
To select a different resolution, use the Scaled option. Some additional resolutions may be available when you hold the Option button.
I hope this information helps ....

  • HOW TO PUT THE MINI TO SLEEP

    HEY ALL,
iPod mini 4GB purchased 5-05 (so whatever generation that is)
I have found a way to put my mini to sleep....it still will not show up on FireWire ports, but at least this way it will hold a charge...
Holding down Play/Pause DOES NOT WORK. This may be a glitch in iTunes 7.
    Go to EXTRAS> CLOCK>SLEEP TIMER
You will find it is off if you have updated your iPod. Set it to the desired time (I used 15 min) and the mini will power off after that time.
    Hope this helps

This can't be part of iTunes, it has to be part of the iPod Restore formatter.
Which version of restore did you use? If this true (holding down the button doesn't put it into "sleep" mode), I would want to avoid that version.

My macbook pro no longer connects to my TV with the mini dvi to hdmi adapter. A while ago the computer fell down and hit the cable. How can I tell if the computer is working ok. Doesn't show mirroring any more. Was working while watching a movie but when I pulled it out from the computer and put it back in the system would no longer mirrorr the screen on the TV.

The best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be for FREE!

  • How do I get rid of the useless grey keyboard on my mini?

I have been using a bluetooth keyboard and have had no trouble with the touch keyboard when the BT is off.  This week though a darker grey keyboard appeared that does not go away when the BT is off AND it does not function.  How do I get back to the normal touch keypad?  I looked in settings and nothing has changed!!!  The grey keypad blocks 1/2 of the screen all the time and does not allow me to access the apps it covers...very frustrating!

I Edited my post after I saw that the image did appear. I assume that you edited your post as well because it wasn't there originally. I have no idea wh that is appearing, but try basic troubleshooting. Close all apps and reset your iPad. No data will be lost.
Before you do that, you aren't using an add-on third party keyboard are you? So you use a Bluetooth keyboard at all? Do you use accessibility features?
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....
but I would be more inclined to to the factory reset and start afresh.

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

  • Mini Display to VGA adapter stopped. The Mini Display to HDMI is still working fine. How´s that possible?

The mini display to VGA adapter had stopped, whinle the Mini Display to HDMI keeps working fine. The minid display to VGA adapter was replaced and the VGA cable as well, and the problem is the same. This test was made with two diferent monitors with VGA entries. How´s that possible to happen? Is that a configuration trouble in the MBP?

The Apple´s customer support gave us the solution for this problem:
    SMC reset
    PRAM reset
The VGA adapter return to work properly aflter this procedure.

Hi, likely the easiest is to just poll the drive & get something like this...
    Get MacScan...

  • How do I store my iTunes library on an external drive and can I still access it as I would if it was still all sitting on the mini mac?

The mini mac is full and I want to be able to use the 2 tb drive as storage and time machine. How do I get the content onto the external drive and access it it and hoe does new content get downloaded and stored to the drive not the mac? Also can I have 1 drive playing storeage and back up or do I need a second? Basic questions I suspect but not to me!

    1. Drag the library to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there.
    2. Get a second. Having the backups on the same drive as the original data won't help when that drive fails.
