How often needs Mac Mini a shutdown?

After a while, Mac Mini (OS Lion installed) gets  sluggish.
Shutting off is then necessar; when I restart, it works noramlly but already after a few hours I notice it is not so fresh.
After some days it is impossible to work with.
Shutting down is not easy. If you click the Shut Down under the Apple icon. It is tedious
It is better to first force quit all programs
Is there another way to quickly shut down ?
Is there a speed up without shut down ?without  tedious procedures

The "Eject" key is at the upper right corner of the keyboard.

  • How to make Mac Mini (Early 2009) sleep in Lion?

After upgrading to Lion, my Mac Mini (Early 2009) stopped going to sleep from the Apple menu or from the keyboard. The problem has persisted with all point releases of Lion. The computer went to sleep with the same peripherals just fine under Snow Leopard.
The display goes to sleep but the computer itself neither suspends nor hibernates. The power light is lit and doesn't pulsate. Measuring how many watts the device draws from the power socket shows that it's not sleeping. It wakes up so quickly that it must be only the display sleeping.
Console log shows nothing when trying to sleep.
Changing the hibernate mode from the default 3 to 25 makes no difference. Running the PleaseSleep app make no difference.
How to put Mac Mini (Early 2009) to sleep (preferably hibernation--not just suspension) under Lion?

    Hello,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • How to backup Mac mini OS 10.4.5

    Hey guys.
I'm having on h3|| of a time trying to find out how I can back up a friends Mac mini with OS 10.4.5 on it. I need to back it up so, I can upgrade it to snow leopard.
I have already tried copying the main HDD to an external drive and, I get an error.
Also, am I able to use time machine on this early of a version? I have done some research on this but, conveniently, Apple seems to be very vague about what OS versions time machine supports or, supplying a full version on line to down load.
So, needless to say, any help at all would be great.
    Thanx

Is there a way that I can simply "copy" the hard drive onto an external HDD like one does in windowz?
Lookin for the easiest and, least cost intensive way of doing this.
Or, is there some freeware or, open source apps I can utilize??

  • How to use Mac Mini Server as media server

I recently purchased a Mac Mini Server and want to make it my media center accessed by my TV.
This is what I have on my network:
    1x Mac Book Pro
    3x Mac Books
    4x iPhones (2x iPhone 4, 2x iPhone 3Gs)
    1x iPad
    1x 1TB external Drive
    1x Time Capsule 500 Gig
I want to figure out a way to easily put all the Video/Photos and Music onto the Mac Mini Server from all phones, computers and iPad.  I then want to be able to watch them from my TV.
I then want all the devices to be able to see the videos/photos from them in real time if needed.
Does anyone know how to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    Darren

iCloud when available later this year will help a lot. However in the mean time the only option is to either
sync all the iPhones/iPads to their computers
copy all the libraries on to your Mac mini and then import them in to the master library
login via file sharing to each computer and then import them in to the master library
use FireWire Target Disk mode and import them in to the master library

  • How to connect Mac Mini with LG 19LS4D LCD TV?

    Hi all,
I just purchased my Mac Mini and tried connecting to my LG 19" HD TV using the supplied DVI to VGA adapter. When I first booted the machine "No signal" was displayed on my TV. I plugged in another 15" monitor and played around with resolutions and cable swapping and it works at 1024 x 768 at 60Hz (not ideal but better than nothing). Everytime I turn off the Mac Mini or it goes to sleep the resolution is reset and "No signal" appears again.
I have tried connecting via VNC to play around with the settings remotely but this has no effect on my TV monitor and is only resolved by the solution above or by leaving my Mac awake and not sleeping.
The documentation for the TV says that all the resolutions I have tried, and more are supported and Detect Displays under System Preferences shows these but defaults to a resolution that produces a "No signal" box.
Any ideas would be greatly welcomed.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi BSteely,
Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions, the LG shows on the mini as it should do i.e. there is a specific code (the LG model number) and lists the resolutions and refresh rates listed in the manual. Adobe Photoshop complains of a bad colour profile but I think that was only because when the LG is finally lit up it is as a result of me connecting the 15" monitor then hot swapping before OS X has change to realise.
When using VNC with the LG attached 1024 x 768 at 60Hz is shown but selecting that does not show the screen on the LG.
I did install SwitchResX from looking at other forums but was unable to save a usable state as the profile and resolutions were from a different monitor effectively despite my LG being connected. The P&D file that it gave back is listed in full below although I suspect this is for my 15"monitor (Excuse the length but I am unsure as to which bits are most useful).
The LG manual lists 1440 x 900 at 60Hz as the native default however the mini fails to recognise this. The easiest resolution I can get after hot swapping monitors is 1024 x 768 at 60Hz although the other day (not sure how) I did get 1280 x 1024 (at 60Hz?). The LG does not however have a DVI port. It does have HDMI so a DVI to HDMI cable could work but without buying a cable I don't know.
Here is the LG's information file:

  • How to buy mac mini from USA

HI, there, I want to buy a Mac mini from USA but I'm in New Zealand. The price here is so crazy!!! Is it possible to order one from apple store in USA and ask them to post it? How to do that? Cheers

There are some things to know about buying things in the US. The prices do not include sales taxes. There is no standard federal sales tax, it differs from state to state and large city to large city and can be between 6 to 10+%.
If you buy from Apple you will always pay sales tax. If you find an online 3rd party Apple reseller, you may pay as much as US$20 to 30 less for the product, but many also do not charge sales tax and if you buy enough, offer free shipping within the US. I have friends in Dallas, so I buy things in the US there. For example, if I had purchased my Mac mini from an Apple Store in Dallas it would have been US$499 plus US$41.00 sales tax (8.25%). (It would have been the same cost from Apple Online, but sometimes they charge for shipping, sometimes they do not.) However, I ordered it from Other World Computing for US$479.00 with no sales tax and free shipping to Dallas. So I saved US$61.00.
However, as mentioned, shipping to NZ and paying customs' duty fees may not save you anything over buying it there.

  • How does the mac mini perform with cs5

    Just curious
How does the Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the new mac mini perform with cs5 photoshop  cs6 photoshop?
    thanks
    Ted

Jeff, I appreciate your comment, so you haven't had any problem with using the painttools in CS 6 photoshop and the 3d type etc, in other words all the features that CS6 photoshop has.
I was thinking about buying the mac mini but was concerned how it works with CS 5 (which I have) I will have to take another look at the MiniMac server with the 3000 card. I do a lot of Digital Painting primarily Painter 12.2 but and would like to use the Painter brushes in CS 5 ( have not upgraded to CS 6.) My Imac is 6 years old and really is not fast enough.
    Thanks for replying

  • "Start Idle Timer Stopped" How to boot Mac Mini?

I was following Apple's procedure to setup Boot Camp - I had partitioned the drive on my Mac Mini, installed Mac OS X 10.4 and was setting about the upgrade it to Leopard, when it crashed with the prompt:
    localhost:/root# CSRHIDTransitionDriver::stop
    IOBluetoothHCIController::Start Idle Timer Stopped
No mater if I started by resetting the parameter RAM, Safe boot (Shift Key), Option key, or from the System DVD (C Key), it came up withe the same message. It is a command prompt - and I can do a "reboot" command (with the same result). I did a "/sbin/fsk -fy" and the disk checked out okay.
Any ideas on what I might do to get this thing going again? How can I get it to actually boot, either from the hard drive or the system DVD?

I also reset the System Management Controller:

...and tried booting diagnostics (D Key), both also to no avail.

  • Need Mac mini with 10.7

I cannot purchase a new Mac mini because the printer and touchscreen monitor I want to use do not have the supporting drivers for mountain lion (10.8), or the companies' tech support says things like "it should work" not "it has confirmed functionality."  Therefore, I feel forced to look into used or refurbished Mac minis with 10.7 or 10.6.  Apple's refurbished page currently shows only two Mac minis for sale  - both have OS X server, which also comes with Mtn Lion.  This leads me to my question:  Is my best bet to find a used or new-in-the-box (but sitting on a warehouse shelf) Mac Mini from 2011 or so with 10.7?  Apple is of little help with only two refurbished machines with Mtn Lion.   Two potential problems come to mind - slower dual core versus quad core processors, and 2.0 USB ports instead of 3.0.  I wish I could just buy a new Mac mini with the 10.7 as this OSX has confirmed compatability with the touchscreen and printer drivers.
    Thanks for any help anybody.

    BDaqua -
Thank you so much for your help.  I reviewed the website you provided.  If we are going with used or refurbished, we'd like to find 10.7 with a quad core.  I found this company:
http://www.gainsaver.com/Catalog/Detail.aspx?cICode=168550&CID=103&SID=MC936LL/A &gclid=CNLoq4-TnrcCFYZaMgodiS4AGg   but have no idea how reputable, or what "pre-owned" might mean to them.  Are there Apple-certified refurbished products out there besides Apple?  If we were going to buy a "pre-owned", used or refurbished item, are some companies better to work with than others?  Any other leads?
Also, do you see where you can upgrade some of the components on the right side of the screen at gainsaver.com?  What do you think about having a 3rd party company like this install, say a hard drive (they don't list whether any of them are Fusion or SSD) or RAM?
Yes, ebay has many used Mac minis but it has been hard to find the one with the quad core that I want with the older OSX.
We don't want to run Parallels or Fusion, etc.  We'd like to just stick with Apple and products that are compatible.

  • How to attach Mac mini to iMac as monitor

I bought a Mac mini server. I have an iMac on my network and thought I could view it through that, but when I attach it to the router, nothing shows up on the iMac. I'm guessing it is because it isn't set up yet. Can I use my iMac screen to view it if I attach it directly to the iMac? What cable do I need to do this if it will work?  Thanks.
