How to access my IMAC remotely?

Hi,
When I had my Dell with XP running, i had software called GOTOMYPC installed which allowed me to access my home computer from anywhere via my laptop.....
Does the IMAC already have a program like this installed that allows this? Or is their something I have to buy?
Thanks in advance..
JW

It's call Apple Remote Desktop or ARD. Your computer will already have the client software installed. Go to System Preferences/Sharing and enable Remote Management. You will need to purchase the Admin software though from Apple. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?s=topSe llers&fnode=home/shop_mac/software/apple&nplm=MA232Z/A&mco=C9E1F8CC
Also if your machine is behind a router/firewall you will need to forward ports 3282 and 5900 to your machine in order to manage it from off site.

I work away from the office for much of the time.  How can I access my iMac remotely?

Unless this is critcal for some reason I would not do this.  Unless you understand all the techinolticcal pit falls you can leave your computer dangerusly exposed doing this.  If you are not technical your best bet is going to be to get a wireless router with built in VPN support ($200 - $500) to give you a secure connection home.  And then you will need the Apple Remote Desktop app ($90 I think) and even then it will only work if your work compute is also a Mac.  There are probably other comerial apps that will let you remote into your Mac desktop on windows but will probably be in the $200 price range.

  • How to access a DSNless remote MS-ACCESS DB ?

I have tried this with local system and working fine.
    String conString="jdbc:odbc:DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};SERVER=myserver;DBQ=c:\\my.mdb";
I think here the SERVER is dummy. Even without SERVER its working fine with local system.
But assume the 'my.mdb' DB is in remote 'myserver' and how to access that from a local system as a client ?
Its saying "errorjava.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Could not find file '(unknown)'."
(I knew that using type 3 and 4 we can do that. But Is there any way to do this without that ?)
I think Access is a desktop related application and doesn't support client server like SQL server.
    Is that right ?
    Expecting your answers......

why?Because to do that you have to 'share' your drive with the internet. That is considered a security hole. This presumes that you meant internet rather than intranet.
can ualso tell me why we should use middle tireI can't say for certain that you need that. An application server allows for the possibility of more security, better data abstraction levels (data, gui, rules) and allows for connection pools amoung other things. Whether that is useful depends on exactly what you are doing.

  • Access Home iMac Remotely from Work

I have almost identical setups at home and work. At both locations, I have a 22" iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I would like to access both my iMacs wether I am at home or work. I am a bit confused on how to properly achieve this. The main idea is to access either iMac without anyone being there - that takes iChat out of the equation. Any thoughts?

The easiest solution, especially since you may not be in control of the necessary hardware at work to make this happen without such a solution, would be to use Back to My Mac with a MobileMe account. See System Preferences -> MobileMe.
If you don't have a MobileMe account, try a third-patry solution, like LogMeIn.
If you want to try your hand at making it work without these solutions, see my post at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9436505&#9436505
It's an old post, but still applies... the only difference is that I've since learned you should set the Configure IPv4 setting to "Manually" instead of what I said in that post.

  • Can I access my iMac remotely from my MacBook without buying new software?

I have an iMac G5 and a MacBook, both running OS 10.4.7. I'd like to be able to remotely access files that are on my iMac when using my MacBook away from home. Is there a way to do that inexpensively (i.e., not spending $299 on Remote Desktop)? I don't need to run programs remotely, just pull a file off once in a while. Thanks.

Well... the IP you see in Network is the local IP, to see the IP that the outside world sees, check this...
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/
Since you have a router, you must go into it's setup and Forward Ports to the IP you see in Network>TCP/IP... Port 80 for Web Sharing, 21 &22 for ftp...
    Well here's the whole list...
    http://support.stat.ucla.edu/view.php?supportid=39
548 for File Sharing, and so on.
If your ISP provides a Static IP, then you just need to enable the Services you want in the Sharing Pref Pane, if your ISP gives you a Dynamic IP, (outside one... the Router's IP is different), then no-ip.org can help fix that part.

  • Re:iMac remotely accessed from another computer and location?

Can you access an iMac remotely from another computer and location if there is knowone to switch it on?

    Barbara,
Both are legitimate concerns, I'll address each as best I can.
As for the the power issue, well that's going to be the case with any computer. We have many choices, most of them impractical for example take your house off the grid, put in your own power source (solar or wind powered) which clearly for most of us is totally impractical. The next thing would be a backup-generator like a hospital or other mission critical facilities (police & fire houses) have. While this is more practical again it's stretching the limits again for most of us. So the next thing is a healthy battery back up system that can maintain power to a computer for several hours if necessary. While they are still expensive they are far less expensive than the first two solutions. Of course you can set the energy saver settings to power on your computer after the power comes back on if even the UPS battery goes dead. I haven't tried this remotely however I think it might work.
Next is security, DropBox and Logmein both address this themselves so I would recommend looking into their solutions. Personally I find them trust worthy and don't have an issue. Even if you use MobileMe you would still have the same concerns, and how about Google, and all the other major players. To me Google while it's a vast resource and extremely helpful if for some reason they decided to become the Evil Empire they have far more access to your information that anything. Anytime you do a simple search they are collecting information about you. For example let's say you are looking for ATM's in a new city, they can capture your search and if they were evil enough they could track your every step. Is this far fetched and ridiculous, of course it is but it is possible. However this is the case with any Internet based computing, if you use some basic common sense for the most part your data is pretty secure. I'm much more nervous about the minimum wage clerk at Taco Bell taking my credit card information than Google, Apple, Logmein or Dropbox doing so.

  • Accessing my imac from my macbook?

Is there a way, or program i can use to access my imac remotely and control things on the desktop and such? I really know nothing about this sort of stuff except for transferring some files wirelessly a few times.

It should work flawlessly, are you sure you setup the sharing preferences on both computers?
Also you can use any finder window, click on the network icon in the side bar and make sure you are in column view, and click on 'my network'.

  • How to: Setup AAE for Remote Disk Access & Serve PS3

    Hi there,
I've read so many tutorials, and tried so many combinations, but haven't found anything for my specific purpose.
I was wondering if someone might have the insight to do a quick run-through (including specific settings) on how I would setup my Airport Extreme for the following scenario/purpose.
    Setup:
    1. Netgear DGN2000 ADSL Modem + Router in one
    2. Airport Extreme = Model #A1354
    3. Western Digital Studio 1TB (mac os extended journaled formatting - not used as time machine)
    4. PS3 80gb
    *To accomplish:*
    1. Access the Western Digital HDD remotely. So I can access my files from work.
    2. Use the Western Digital HDD to serve media to the PS3 when I'm at home, so I can watch movies without having my computer turned on.
    Caveat:
    1. I don't want to use/pay for MobileMe.
    Many thanks,
    Glen

Hello nelga. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since most of your questions are not really AirPort networking related, I will do the best I can to provide assistance.
    1. Access the Western Digital HDD remotely. So I can access my files from work.
I know you don't want to use BTMM, but to best understand the hurdles you will be up against, it might be worth taking a quick look at how BTMM works "behind the scenes" to allow you to access a HDD remotely.
    BTMM - Basic Communication Flow
o For a computer connected to the Internet via a router, BTMM "asks" the router for its configuration information. For a router, like your AEBSn, that uses NAT-PMP, BTMM will ask the router to assign arbitrary public ports. In turn, the router will provide these port assignments (& the router's Public IP address) back to BTMM.
o BTMM then sends this information to the MobileMe account. In background MobileMe updates a special set of DNS entries to be used by BTMM. These entries are then made available to all BTMM clients using your MobileMe account. When a computer, with BTMM enabled, uses your MobileMe credentials, it automatically retrieves a list of all other computers/routers that are registered with the same account. All these devices should then appear under the SHARED section of the Finder.
o When attempting to connect to a remote computer (or router), BTMM creates a secure connection to that remote device using the information from the MobleMe account.
o Once the connection is established, the devices can then communicate with each other.
The key to all this is that you will need the following in order to be able to remotely access the HDD:
    1) Your ISP must provide you with a publicly reachable IP address.
    2) If your ISP provides you with a Dynamic (vs. a Static Pubic IP address), you will need to keep track of that IP address in order to consistently have access to the HDD. Without knowing this address, when your ISP changes it periodically, you will have to manually "retrieve" it to connect again. You can get around this by using a service, like DynDNS.
    3) You will have to configure your NAT router for port forwarding/mapping to allow the necessary file sharing communication to pass through the router to the AEBSn with the shared HDD. Specifically you want to open the appropriate ports for both the AFP (TCP: 548) & SMB (TCP: 445) file sharing protocols.
    4) Similarly you want the AEBSn to be enable for file sharing.
    2. Use the Western Digital HDD to serve media to the PS3 when I'm at home, so I can watch movies without having my computer turned on.
In order to stream video from your WD HDD, you will need a DLNA-compliant Media Server to stream that data to the PS3, which is a DLNA client. With that said, you will need at least one computer (Mac, PC, or Linux-based device) running in order to run this server. The WD HDD has no means to run this server as it has no operating system.

  • How can I notify staff of updated data if they do not have access to the remote data?

We have a shortcoming on one of our major programs that will not be fixed for at least one year. I want to create a notice for staff when there are pending requests for local offices. I am using a remote view to check if there are new requests from
    local offices:
    SELECT xxx_yyyyy_request_queue.COMMENTS;
    FROM xxx_yyyyy_REQUEST_QUEUE xxx_yyyyy_request_queue;
    WHERE xxx_yyyyy_request_queue.MODIFIED_BY IS NULL
I use the remote view as the data source for a table and have a small window that stays on top that I can see if there is an order. I trigger the remote view using a timer event.
This is fine as a stop-gap. However, I cannot run this on the machines of the staff that need the notice: they do not have the correct version of Oracle, they do not have access to that remote data, we do not want multiple machines triggering the same query
    every 15 seconds, etc.
Is there a way that I can notify other users of the change in the data fro the remote view. My original thought was to update a local table with the view reults and have a companion routine notify them of changes to that table. However, I do not see how
the SQL used by VFP accomodates the "INTO" clause.
    Your help is appreciated.

    data.
At least your query seems to get data where MODIFIED_BY IS NULL, doesn't it?
So if the reccount is>0 there is a reason to inform your employees.
    Bye, Olaf.

  • How to access the remote Objects Without Db_links?

    Hi ,
I want to know how to access the remote objects without db_link.That is i want to access a object in some other server which has different database.

SanjayBala, just so you know that it is possible to create a database link in Oracle to non-Oracle databases in some circumstances. Look up Generic Connectivity aslo know as Heterogenous Services. With 11g Oracle has basically renamed the feature and replaced it with somethinkg named ike DG4ODBC.
I have not spent time studying the details for DB4ODBC but with HS Oracle provided the interface and you had to obtain the necessary ODBC driver on your own. I had Oracle on AIX reading and writing to SQL Server on Windows but the developers chose to write a java program and connect to both via it. On Windows and Linux platforms the necessary ODBC drivers might be available without the requirement to go out and purchase one.
The Oracle Open Gateway product is an advanced version of the above features with drivers for specific non-Oracle databases included like DB2 or Informix.
