How to backup a MacBook pro using 10.4.11 to an external drive?

Hi all!
I have a MacBook Pro with 10.4.11 and am going to update my OS version to the latest. I want to back up my entire computer onto my external drive first because I'm scared I'll lose everything. I have a 500 GB LaCie external drive (p'9223 porsche design, if that helps!). The guy at the apple store told me, and showed me how, to use Time Machine. I then get home and find out my computer didn't come with it, even though the Apple guy knew which MacBook version I had! So now I'm lost. I heard using the restore function in Disk Utility works but I'm not totally sure I underestand that whole idea. How do I easily back up everything onto this external drive?

Carbon Copy Cloner makes a 'snapshot' of your internal drive. I really wish that you had Time Machine - it would be much simpler to simply restore those files after updating your OS.
Go ahead and make the clone - and then just update your system to 10.6.x. You SHOULDN'T lose ANY DATA during the update or afterwards. The clone is only for safety's sake. I'm 99.8% certain that you will not lose any data by simply upgrading your OS.
That said, after the successful update, you can continue to use the clone method of backing up or use Time Machine. If I had to chose only one, I'd go with Time Machine because it makes incremental backups rather than one-time snapshots. I use both Time Machine and clones - having at least one of each is my preferred method.
Good luck,
Clinton

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can't back up a MacBook to iCloud, as there isn't enough storage to make backups of a Mac. Instead, you can use services like CrashPlan, but the best way to back up your Mac is by using Time Machine or a cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner onto an external drive. Doing this, you can be sure your data is with you everywhere

  • Double backup two MacBook Pros each physically connected to their own external disks?

We have two MacBook Pros 17" (an early 2008 and a late 2011) connected by WiFi, both running OSX 10.9.3 and each physically connected to their own My Book external disks.  After I started the first MacBook Pro's backup to add the second MacBook Pro's external disk, I couldn't set up the second MacBook Pro's backup to add the first MacBook Pro's external disk.  Each of these My Book external disks had previously been used for backing up each MacBook Pros.  None of the help pages helped.

On the computer to which the drives are connect enable File Sharing via Sharing preferences. Select the drives you want shared and CTRL- or RIGHT-click then select Get Info from the contextual menu. In the upper pane is a checkbox labeled "Shared." Check the box to enable sharing the device.
On the other computer select Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu. Click on the Browse button to locate the shared computer. Double-click on the icon which should bring up a login dialog. Log into the admin account of the shared computer using the Registered User button. You will then be prompted for the admin password of the account. Enter it and click on the OK button. This should connect you and provide access to the shared computer and devices connected to it that have been marked as shared.
For more help select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing."

  • My MacBook Pro was erased and back up on external drive was reloaded.  How do I reload my address book and bookmarks?

When my MacBook Pro was erased and reloaded, my address book, stickies and bookmarks on all my browsers were gone!  How can I re-load the old contents.  I've looked at all the back-ups.  I find the applications, but not the contents.

    You had two choices:
1- you save the files from your user library
2- use icloud which would put them back
    You used neither is seems.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro won't detect my USB 3 external drive

I've got a late 2011 MacBook Pro, running OSX Yosemite with all available updates installed.
I recently purchased a 1TB USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 backwards compatible) external hard drive (Seagate) to use for Time Machine backups.
Quite often when I connect the drive to my Mac it doesn't get picked up - i.e. it doesn't appear in Finder or Disk Utility. The drive does get power each time (you can hear it if you put your ear close enough), however the small light on the drive doesn't come on when the problem occurs.
If I unplug it and then plug it back in it sometimes picks it up - often I have to restart a few times for it get picked up.
Other times it connects first time without any problems at all, which is strange!
It was doing this before upgrading from OSX Mavericks to OSX Yosemite.
My USB2.0 500GB external drive connects and appears in Finder without any problems at all.
I've performed the following troubleshooting steps:
    - Connected the drive to different USB ports (no change)
    - Tested the drive on various Windows workstations (works fine every time)
    - Tested with different USB 3.0 cables (no change)
    - Formatted the drive (no change)
    - Tried different USB3.0 drives (same problem occurs)
I'm not really sure what else to try. You can't seem to get just USB2.0 drives any more in the UK (not 1TB or greater).
    Has anyone else had problems?

USB Ports can sometimes be funny like that. If you haven't already, these are some little things you can try:
    - First things first, unplug all your usb devices. Try plugging a device that you're sure works on your MBPR over EACH of the usb ports (just to check if they're both working correctly & supplying power on the mac itself).
    - Check the USB cable's A plug (the end that connects to the mac) and make sure both the contacts are clean, and that the crevass is free from dirt/lint buildup, as it can interfere with a proper connection. (This can happen if you store cables in cases or bags).
    - Sometimes easing the USB plug slightly out from the computer may help mount certain devices. If it DOES mount (abruptly) after this, then see item above on making sure your cable is clean, or swap out usb cable as it may not be working properly & try again with a new cable.
    - Lastly, some devices may need a firmware update to even connect, as with the cases of the Lexar USB3.0 Card Readers and some Seagate USB HD's some folks here are experiencing with their Retinas.
Here's another thread that may also be useful concerning an external Toshiba Canvio HD.
It's not much, I know, but hope this helps, if a little.

  • How do I get iTunes to use the iTunes folder on an external drive?  Windows 7

I have used iTunes on an external drive on a Windows XP machine.  I moved the drive to a Windows 7 computer, authorized it with Apple.  However, when I go to preferences/advanced and try to change the Media folder location, the location is changed but the music is not recognized in Itunes.  Help!

I experimented and discovered the solution by trial and error.  I don't understand why this is not documented in a way that a naive user would understand.  It is step 2, below, that is not obvious.  Unless you know that there is this thing called a library and that you must import it, you would be at a dead end.  I originally assumed that when I point iTunes to the folder on the external drive where iTunes was located it would recognize everything from there.
    1.  When installing iTunes, if music iTunes Library is on another disk, In iTunes Go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced - select the iTunes media on the other disk.
    2.  In order to bring in the library & playlists, in iTunes, Go to File/Library/import Playlist go to the iTunes  location on the other disk and select the file iTunes Library.  The file type is labeled XML document.
This will bring in the songs, albums and playlists.

  • My macbook pro retina 13inch won't recognize my external drive (LaCie 1TB  porsche design)

    Hello,
I've had this drive for about 8 months and it's always worked fine. But when i connect it now to my macbook it won't show up anywhere, not with disk utility system profiler, nothing. However it does turn, i can hear and feel it spinning. Also when i connect to a windows it does show up. So I checked if it was the usbport of my macbook but when connecting my ipod there was no problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thx!!

    Hello valleke92,
It sounds like you are unable to see your external HDD when you plug it in via USB. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article named:
    USB and FireWire Quick Assist
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1151
    Check the connections
If you're using a cable, make sure that both ends of the cable are properly and securely connected to your device and Mac. Try unplugging your device and then plugging it back in. If you're connecting a FireWire device, make sure that the cable is no more than 15 feet (4.5 meters) long. If you're connecting a USB device, make sure that the cable is no more than 16 feet long. If you're making a direct connection, make sure that the device's connector is fully seated in your computer's port. If your device also connects to a power outlet, make sure it has power.
    Check the system requirements
Check your device's documentation or packaging again, or go to the manufacturer's website, to verify that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements to use the device.
    Check your device's power
If the device has a power switch, make sure it is on. Try turning your device off and then on again.  Some devices require more power that the bus supplies. If your device came with an external power adapter, always connect it to a power source in for the best performance from your device.
    Restart your Mac
Sometimes a simple restart can resolve issues. From the Apple menu, choose Restart to restart your computer. Once your Mac is finished starting up, test your device again.
    Check the software
See if a newer version of software is available for your device if it requires software. Visit the product manufacturer's website.
    Check your device's power
Make sure that your device is on if it has a power switch; try turning your device off and then on again.
Try a different port and cable
Connect your device to a different USB or FireWire port on your Mac. If you connected your device to a USB or FireWire hub or to a port on another USB or FireWire device that's connected to your Mac (known as daisy chaining), connect your device directly to a port on your computer. Some devices need to draw power from a USB or FireWire port to work; if you connect a device to a non-powered hub (one that isn't plugged in to a power source) or to a low-power port (such as the one on your USB keyboard), it may not work. If you have another known-good cable, try swapping the cable to see if that works. If it does, you should replace the problematic cable.
There is additional troubleshooting in the article if you need it, but it should all work you towards a resolution.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Can I boot my new MacBook Pro running ML from SL on an external drive

I have a new MBP with Mountain Lion.  I want to put Snow Leopard, I have the full install DVD, on an external drive.  Can I boot from that drive so I can run a few old applications that won't run in Mountain Lion?

As per Mende1's suggestion: install your Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and run your PowerPC applications (which ones are they?):

  • How to manage a MacBook Pro + Time Capsule + Apple TV combo?

Hi, everyone. I'm a new user to Mac techonology and I have a few doubts I'd like to clear before I acquire some new stuff and avoid a useless expense.
I just bought a 500 GB 15" MacBook Pro, and I've always used several external USB hard drives for backup (one HDD) and releasing space from my computer (two HDD). So you can imagine how much I have to juggle with since I'm an avid iTunes store customer for TV shows, movies and music, on a weekly basis. So, you can imagine also a 500GB internal HDD will fill up eventually with all the rest of the data I have.
I'm thinking about buying a 2TB Time Capsule to get rid of all the cables, countless copy/drags/syncs, and reduce the number of external HDD's. And I just got a new Apple TV as a birthday gift (don't have it yet with me) so I can enjoy all my media in the living room.
So, would Time Capsule be the best option? To backup my MacBook AND use it as a data storage external HDD for files that fill up the MacBook (movies and tv episodes)? Also, can both options be accessed remotely for sharing purposes and for Apple TV playing?
I hope I'm making myself clear enough. Does anyone have an accurate idea if what I'm trying to go for is possible? I'd hate to spend 500 bucks on a Time Capsule and not defeat my current "management" of data.
    Please help.
    Best regards,
    Martin V.F.

You don't want to mix Time Machine backups and other types of files on the Time Capsule disk. By design Time Machine will eventually fill up the Time Capsule disk, making it hard to manage your other files. Instead, connect a USB disk drive to the Time Capsule and put those other files there. Size the Time Capsule disk strictly for Time Machine backups. Since Time Machine won't back up the files on that external Time Capsule drive, you'll have to arrange for that some other way.
Also, can both options be accessed remotely for sharing purposes and for Apple TV playing?
If you want to share the Time Machine backups, why?? If iTunes can find the files on the Time Capsule external drive, then the AppleTV should be able to access them.

How do I use iCloud to backup my Macbook Pro?

    Hi Rob
It sounds like my problem is the same as yours..... Sorry, but I'm a bit of an iPad dummy so am writing for some more clarification...
My problem is..... I am away from home and only travelling with my iPad, however we have sold our house and my bigpond email address on my iPad is getting clogged with all the solicitors stuff etc, so I really need these emails for my files...
I want to be able to backup these up (so that I can retrieve them later to print out and file) and delete them from my iPad...
I've just created an iCloud email account (I think) is this what you did? So should I forward all my emails to this iCloud email account? And will I be able to retrieve them later?
I hope you login here to see my question.....
    Thanks Janet

  • How can I backup my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive

How can I backup my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive?

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

You need to purchase an external drive and start moving some files to it or you can try trashing some files that you no longer need.
Download OmniDiskSweeper and see where your larger files are... you can move them to an external drive or trash them: it's up to you.
I would also begin, since it's obviously don't have backups, a backup scheme or two. See Most commonly used backup methods.
