How to cache Applet using  JRE 1.2.2

I have an applet that is about 500+ kb in size.
I will like to cache this Applet on the end user's
machine and to be downloaded only when the version
on the server has changed. I had done quite a lot
of search on java.sun.com and java usenet
newsgroups, but could not find definintive answer.
This what I had to use:
JRE Plugin 1.2.2 release 006, On Windows NT 4
with SP4 and IE 4.0 with SP1. I could not make
it cache on above platform as Cleint.
This is my understanding so far:
1> Java 1.2.2 jre/plugin depends on browser to cache
the Applet. There is nothing special you have to do.
Is above correct?
2>SOme of the message I had seen on usenet and sun site indicate that the people have problem opposite than me. i.e Applet is cached and they dont want that wherever I want it to be cached and it is not caching.
3> Is it true that for browser to cache the 1.2.2 Applet
(with pluguin installded on end user PC), it had to be
signed using the tools those come with JDK. Keytool
and Jarsigner etc. I tried both ways by using signed
and unsigned applet.
4> I heard that JDK1.3 plugin had additional
parameters i.e cache_option = "plugin" etc
where Applet JAR will be saved in a place other
than Browser's cache. Is it true above is not
available in JDK 1.2.2.
5> I have 'cache im memory' option checked in
Java Plugin control panel. But that did not help.
6> Is there any special way to put html tag for Applet
Jar to be cached. The Applet that needs to be cached
is already in production and html file is working fine
as such.
7>Is there any known bug with JRE 1.2.2 that will
prevent it from caching.
Any responses or pointer to responses appreciated.
TIA
Rakesh K Mittal

I am trying the same in order to implement a version control applet.
The proposal is that an applet runs previous to the main applet. It checks the JARs versions with the server and download the latest if they does not exist in the client. All the version are placed in the extensions directory of the plugin so when the main applet loads the clases it can pick them up lastest versions from the extensions directory.
It works for me. However there is some anoying bug to regard as 4215307.
However, in spite all the previous is working, I can not make it work through a proxy since Control Panel ignores when I set Browser settings or another proxy and always executes without proxy.
A caching proxy could also reduce the network traffic.
Any ideas??

  • Problem in loading an applet using JRE 1.5

    Hi,
I have an applet which is working fine under JRE 1.4, but the same applet failing to load by using JRE 1.5
    Problem Description:
    1. The images in the applet fails to load using JRE 1.5
    2. The Username and Password text box are also failing to initialize.
Can anyone help me out in this.
Is there any code changes required ?

I wonder if you have the same problem as me... Maybe we can find a solution for us both, no need for me to open a new thread for this topic then...
I wrote an applet using Swing and compiled it using JavaSDK 1.4.x. I also installed the 1.4.x JRE for both of my test browsers. In Mozilla 1.1 the applet displays properly all the time. In IE6 SP1 it sometimes works as intended but sometimes the applet simply stops working, as per my Java Console somewhere after invoking the "start" method. Parts of the applet simply become gray and when I resize it - I have a JFrame in my applet - the whole JFrame becomes gray and does not respond to input nor it redraws itself. Shutting down IE does not close the JFrame(although the java console reports normal program termination and cleanup) and the only way to close it is through the task manager. I am using Windows 98SE btw.
Does it sound similiar to your problem? It happens ONLY with IE, not with Mozilla. Anybody has an idea on what it could be? I doubt there's an error in my code...

  • Urgent - How to Run Applet without JRE installation

I am creating an applet which displays information using JTree. This applet needs to be deployed in 'n' systems which may or may not contain JRE. Is there any way where in i can deploy in all the systems without any error.

You could provide swing.jar and have the applet load that. It is
    slow though.

  • I use blackboard, since the latest update to 3.6.14, I get errors with caching applets, use IE and works fine. Whats happened and what can I do to resolve it?

    Error Cache:
Unable to update files in cache.
    Name: myApplet
    java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol: jar/dragndrop_applet.jar
I get a bunch of these Cache Errors. Happens with application only, its blackboard hosted by continuinged.uml.edu.
Run the same thing using IE it has no problems. Firefox till the latest upgrade was also working fine.
What can I do to resolve this problem?

There's a bug in 3.6.14 with Java applets. 3.6.15 was released last Friday to fix that bug. Use '''Help > Check for Updates''' to start the update process to 3.6.15.

  • How to Cache Applets when IP is Dynamic?

After the security update here, http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-103079-1 any users referencing our applets do not use the jar files stored in cache if the DNS has changed. We use an akamai hosted solution for jar distribution (though this would also occur in any DNS load balancing situation) thus the IP is rather dynamic though the content is identical. As the security issues states, any Plugin versions 1.5.0_13 and above or 1.6.0_03 and above treat a new DNS as compeltely new jar files.
Has anyone worked through similar situations? This renders the caching almost useless and we have a rather thick applet (3 Mb total jar files) which is quite an impact for a customer that is often low bandwidth to download daily.
    Thanks!

Hi (and sry for my english ) ,
i just ran into the same problem but my wget refused to work too (because of libssl.so.0.9.8...)
Download the newest source for wget on another computer and copy it to a usb flash drive.

  • Developing applets using ocf

    Hello
The wallet demo is a frame window based application using swing
We wanted an applet version of the same
So we changed the extends frame part to extends JFrame
But there are security exceptions which are thrown
So we refered the programmers guide for OCF
But it discusses only for java platform versions 1.1 and 1.2
It is mentioned that the security models are changing
Where do we get information on how to develop applets using OCF framework for java platform 1.3
Are there some examples for the same
    Thanks in advance

    Hello
    Thanks once again
But what are the resources that the applet is trying to access?
What are the permissions to be given.
Any small examples could be given
Infact now we are able to run it in appletviewer but not using IE.
    The exception thrown is
    java.security.AccessControlException access denied java.io.FilePermission images/initialize.gif read
So what permissions to set and where
Is it possible to grant all permissions to start with
    policy.grant(All)
Are there seperate permissions so that one directory alone or a file alone is accessed
    Thanks once again
    kumar
It's related to J2SE not Java Card.
Applets run in a sandbox by default, whic offers very
little access to resources of the machine it's running
on. It's a security feature that prevents your machine
from very easily being compromised. To set outside
that sandbox requires changes to the java.policies and
    java.security.policies, and certificates.

  • Could not load applet in a browser using jre 1.6.0_06

    Hi,
I am facing problem with loading applets when the browser uses jre 1.6.0_06.
Not able to understand what actually the problem is, I tried to check with a small applet that would simply print Hello World on the java console. Even this applet also could not be loaded on the browser. I could load this applet in the test environment of eclipse, but not able to load it on the browser when the applet is deployed on Tomcat.
We have no problems in loading applet if the browser is using an earlier version of the jre.
One more thing we have found out that, if we change the SSL cipher suite of the ssl.conf file such that it can support weaker protocols, my applet works with jre 1.6.0_06 also.
But one thing we could not understand is that why changes in SSL cipher suite of the ssl.conf file creates problem in loading the applet, only in case the browser is using jre 1.6.0_06. I mean to say that changes in the SSL cipher suite does not create any problem in loading the applet if my browser is using an earlier version of jre 1.6.0_06.
Please help me out as I don't have any clue regarding this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
We have found a wor around for this problem.
The following option has been unchecked and the applet could be loaded.
    Go to java control panel
    Under the Advanced Tab
    Under the Security section
Uncheck the last option "Use TLSv1.0".
    This makes the applet work.
But could not understand as why this is creating a problem.
We have tried to include TLSv1.0 in the cipher suite of our apache server, while keeping the above option in java plugin control panel checked, but even that did not solve the problem.
Please help me of how should I proceed for this problem, as I am totally stuck.
    Thank you.

  • How do I specify the JRE i wish to use to Run an Application.

    Hi Everyone;
Please bear with me if you read this before.
I have installed java 1.3.1 and java 1.4.1 in that order.
The JRE used by default is java 1.4.1
How do I specify the JRE I wish to use to Run an Application from a command prompt.
    Example:
    Java -something org.jboss.Main
    help ??
    Stephen

I was a lil embarrassed. I told my supervisor that the installation of java overwrites the JRE and that's that.
My supervisor took 10 minutes and went through it and found java.exe in the System32 file.
The java.exe file is found in guess where "C:/WINNT/System32/" folder how nice. C:/WINNT/System32/ is in the path. Not only that it's the first entry in the path. So when I execute java it is not using java.exe any one of the java files that I got from the java website.
So I don't have any control over the version.
    Oh well;
    That's life. That's 1 for my supervisor.
