The hard drive on my laptop is failing: overall performance has greatly diminished, the computer has slowed down, sometimes even crashing; looking at /var/ log messages, plenty of I/O error messages are building up.
Added to this, the System Information (system report) says that the Hitachi (750 Gb, 7200 rpm, model HTS727575A9E362) SATA drive is failing (S.M.A.R.T. status)
I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2011).
So, my question: what's the best way to change it for a new hard disk drive, and be sure it's compatible?
The computer's warranty has already expired, and have no extended coverage....I've been looking around the www for laptop hard drives in Apple retail stores, and can't find any. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have royally screwed things up. The only way to fix it is to repartition the entire drive back to a single volume. If you use Boot Camp then you cannot make additional partitions. There can only be two - OS X and Windows.
You may be able to straighten things out using iPartition 3.4.5 and/or Camptune X 10.4.

If you have the newer unibody style, it's very easy. If it's one of the earlier models, it's considerably more difficult. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware and find your Model Identifier. Firewire 800 is the fastest and most reliable. Also it's bootable if you hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard. Not bootable via Airport obviously or if Filevault is used.
It's only your first clone that's usually takes the longest, it's shorter when it updates as you only do the changes which you can control to keep a pure clone if you wish.

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great. Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives. They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options. Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives. Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.

That's the way.
The drive is probably formatted NTFS which is Windows proprietary file system. Mac OS can read it, but not write to it.
You can do as suggested by TheDave if you have sufficient HD space for temporary storage. Depending on whether you need to continue using the drive with Windows machines there are a few options.
Best for Mac only use is to re-partition and format as GUID partition map and Mac OS Extended (journaled)
For dual use, Leave the partition as MBR and format as FAT32 (MS-DOS in Disk Utility). This has a file size limit of a little over 4GB, but can be read and written to by both Mac and Windows.
There is also exFAT (aka FAT64) if both OSs support it - no file limit there that you'll ever reach.
Alternatively there are software solutions which will allow the Mac to read and write to NTFS drives. I'm told they're not as good as the other solutions, but may be an option if you haven't space to store the contents while re-formatting.

Hi guys. This is the external hard drive I use for Time Machine. When in sleep mode, the external hard drive is off, but wakes up periodically when Macbook Pro Retina does its Power Sleep features including periodic back up. So...is it ok to eject external hard drive while on sleep?

Oh. Normally I leave my external hard drive connected to Macbook Pro and rarely eject it. But once in a while, I need to get that hard drive to connect to other computer for file transfer. So the question was when I need to do this (eject hard drive) while Macbook is on sleep, do I need to wake it up and log in and eject? I thought you were saying that I should always eject before the machine goes to sleep. I think I misunderstood you.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

My wifes 15 in Mid 2010 lap top running 10.8.4 has run out of drive space so we bought a new 1tb drive to install. We aren't sure where to go from here. The current contents are back up on Time Machine, but we also bought a small hard drive enclosure to take out the current hard drive and put it in the small enclosure.
So...do we install the new 1tb drive into the laptop and then try and start from the original hard drive that is now in an enclousure...then "Copy" or "Migrate" the material from the original hard drive to the new on? If so...how is that done?
Or do we try and "Copy" or "Migrate" the hard drive materials backed up on Time Machine? If so...how do we do that?

After formatting the new hdd, while still outside the mac, make a clone of your internal disk with CarbonCopyCloner on the new (still external) disk: CCC will ask you to install the Recovery Partition also, do that, and then the clone.
Then you eject the new drive, shutdown, and then you open the mac take the original disk out, and put the new one in.
On the OWC and other sites you will find instructions how to do the switch. Be very careful with the connectors inside .

Connect the two with a Firewire cable if they both have Firewire ports (or use Thunderbolt if the both have Thunderbolt ports.) Boot the new computer into Target Disk Mode and the old computer normally. The new computer's disk drive should appear on the Desktop of the old computer.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new computer's drive Source means the old computer's drive.
Be sure the old computer is running a version of Mountain Lion that is later than the version installed on the new computer. After cloning you will probably need to run the new 10.8.2 updater for the new computer. OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Update for 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 21.5" iMac (Late 2012), Mac mini (Late 2012).

I've already set up my new MacBook (which is Lion, I think the other mac had the snow lepoard version)...so I guess I'll have to use the Migration Assistant, not the Setup Assistant?
