How to configure new ATA/EIDE internal drive

Hi,
I run a 1Ghz Dual Processor MDD PowerMac G4 w/ OS X 10.4.3, and originally, a single 80 Gb hard drive.
For years I have been selectively burning disks, and utilizing an external 80 Gb firewire drive to keep my internal from overflowing. Finally I have exceeded my capacity to keep everything backed up this way, and have purchased a new Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB internal.
Seemed like a good drive at a good price. The reality is I knew nothing about what I was doing.
I had the misperception that additional hard drive space worked just like additional memory. Plug and play, right? I have since learned, not so.
This brings me to my question...
How do I configure my machine properly? My aspiration is still the same as my anticipation. I want to maintain my existing 80 Gb hard drive as the start up, and use the 120 Gb as overflow, and perhaps partition a small portion of it seperately for back up of critical files. Is this possible?
I currently have the jumper set for "slave" configuration. But this has produced no different results than when I first installed the new drive with the jumper in factory default position "cable select". In both cases both disks are seperate desktop icons, and each are seperately bootable. If this is the best I can achieve, I guess that's fine. It doesn't seem any better or different than my set up with the original external. Can't I set it up so I can maintain my current home folders, but not necessarily have all the folders/files within it strictly confined to the same hard disk?
Any help from anyone on this confusing (for me) matter will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!, and Best of the Year to ya!

AFAIK, you can't spread a Home folder across volumes. You can, however, move your Home folder to another volume. I do not have the explicit instructions on how to accomplish this, but it does involve some Terminal commands and changing some entries in NetInfo Manager. Perhaps another user can chime in with instructions for moving your Home folder.
You can spread your home directory across multiple volumes if you need to. This can be accomplished by creating symbolic links for subdirectories underneath the root of your home directory.
For example, if you wanted to store your music folder on a different volume, but still have it appear as if it was physically located in your home directory, you would move it and create a symbolic link in its place. This requires using the command line, but it is not difficult.
Say you moved your Music folder to the root of the new disk, named "New Disk". The full path (in Terminal) to the new music folder would be "/Volumes/New Disk/Music" (quotes needed due to the space in the name). Since you moved the Music folder, it no longer exists in your home directory. Simply open up the Terminal application and create a symbolic link that points to the new location like so:cd ~
ln -s "/Volumes/New Disk/Music" MusicIn this example, the first command changes you into your home directory (the '~' is shorthand for it) and the second command creates the symlink. You need to hit enter after each command.
Hopefully this isn't too confusing, but you can accomplish what you desire without too much difficulty.
Cheers!

how to configure new account assignmnet group of material
Probably, the question should have been how to create Account Assignment Group for a material.
Go to IMG SD => Basic Functions => Account Assignment/Costing => Revenue Account Determination => Check Master Data Relevant for Account Asignment.
There select Materials : Account Assignment Groups and create as per the requirement and save.  Now you can see the same while creating the material master.

  • How to use FileVault on second internal drive with user-folder?!

    Hi there,
I've a problem that has not solved yet.
My MBP early 2011 with OS X Lion 10.7.5 has instead the SuperDrive two internal harddiskdrives:
The "System"-Drive (128 GB SSD) for nothing else than the MacOSX installation/applications, and the "User"-Drive (500 GB classic HDD) for all my data and my user-folder. (Yes, I moved it via Terminal commands from "System" to "User").
All works fine, but I am only allowed to encrypt the "System"-Drive via FileVault2. The "User"-Drive is not supported by FileVault2.
I tried to encrypt it with the Terminal commands:
    diskutil cs convert /Volumes/WD-Blue -passphrase
(Note: "WD-Blue" is the name of the "User"-Drive)
After confirming the new passphrase, it should be encrypting my "User"-Drive. In the HardDiskDrive-Utility is this hdd converted into a "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, encrypted)". So far, so good
    But, now the big problem:
After rebooting the MBP, it is not possible to login.
"An error has occured with this user" (or similar)
I have to reboot, hold CMD+R, and deselect in the HDD-Utility the HDD-Protection, and decrypt this drive with the known passphrase.
After this "correction", all works fine, but without the encryption...
So... any ideas, how to protect the second hdd with my user-folder, without losing my data, because I think, when the second one has been deleted and the new format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, encrypted)", it won't solve my problem, because my user-folder is not on the "System"-Drive.
Thank you, and sorry for my english
    Regards.

    Hi there,
I solved my problem by inform myself...
Here is the solution to encrypt the second internal drive, without losing data, if your user-folder is on the second one (and not on SYSTEM). I will type "WD-Blue" in this example. You have to type in your drivename, that you want to encrypt.
Please note, that modifying your system this way is at your own risk!
Add new user in the ucp with admin-permissions
    logout your user
    login as new user (admin)
be sure, that no file on the second drive is in use
    open terminal
type diskutil list to see your drives
type diskutil cs convert /Volumes/WD-Blue -passphrase YOURPASSWORD
Terminal should encrypt your drive. To check the status type diskutil cs list
If the amount of bytes the same, the drive has been encrypted
So, now still use terminal and type (after encryption has been accomplished):
    curl https://raw.github.com/jridgewell/Unlock/master/install.sh | bash
Follow the promts and enter your given password for the encrypted drive (i.e. for "WD-Blue")
    Exit terminal and reboot
    Done
This way works fine. My user-folder is still on WD-Blue (2nd Drive) and the hdd is encrypted without losing my files.
    Regards,
    Marc.

  • HT201250 How can I revert to my internal drive for time machine backups after using an external drive?

Hi. I've been using an external drive for time machine back ups and decided to revert to my internal drive, but it isn't available in the time machine options. The only available option is to set up a time capsule, which I don't own.
Is it because not enough space is available on my internal drive (approx 50GB)?
    Thanks!

50 Gb free on your internal drive is relly very low and of course not enought for a any kind of backup.
How big is your internal HD ?  If you have left only 50 GB free it is probably 90% full. Let's imagine you have a 500 Gb. This means 450 Gb data and 50 Gb free.  How can you backup 450 into 50 ?
Second point. The backup on your internal HD is a nonsense evenif it is big enough. If it stops working you will have no bakup.
Do you have an iMac or a portable ?
The portable automatic uses the internal HD if the external is not connected, but this is intended for a short time.

  • How do I set up an internal drive in my Mac pro as a mountable network drive

Hi! I basically would like to know how to use one of the internal hard drives in my Mac pro as a mountable network drive to enable me to do full time machine backup and restores for my MacBook pro. Thanks in advance for the help!

If it's just for you, you can access and or all of your Mac Pro drives from your MBP just by logging onto the Mac Pro using the Mac Pro name and password. This is a very bad idea unless you are in a trusted environment but if you're on a home network and you trust yourself, it really works.
I've been using this technique for years on a gigabit LAN in my home. It also works logging on the other or both ways. Just pay attention to things like re-boots and shut-downs.

  • How can I make the second internal drive bootable drive bootable for trouble shooting?

I suspect that a newly installed SSD boot drive may be causing instability in my new 2012 Mac Mini Server. The logic board and RAM have been replaced and boot drive wiped and partitioned and 10.10.2 reinstalled. I'd like to make the second drive bootable in order to take the SSD boot drive out of the equation.
Could some please describe the correct method for making the second internal drive bootable.
    Thanks.

A quick addendum: your Mac will have a default boot drive set, and if not then it will choose the first one it identifies on the disk (usually the first partition on the first disk, followed by subsequent partitions on this disk, and then moving to the second identified disk, etc.). As a result, if you have to hold Option to select your second boot drive, the next time you restart, your Mac will boot back to the first drive. To make the second boot drive the default one, you will need to select it in the Startup Disk system preferences. This will update the hardware to use this as the default boot drive.

  • How to move iPhoto Library from internal drive to ext. drive?

    Hello,
If someome can assist me with the procedure on how to move my iphoto library from my internal drive to external drive, so that I can keep and access all my iphoto library files primarily from the external drive. In addition I would also like to know once the process has been completed if it would be safe to delete the internal iphoto library? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jag

First and foremost, before you begin, make sure you're doing some sort of backup of those photos and your systems.  Preferably with Time Machine to some sort of external drive (besides the one that will store the photos) or Time Capsule.
Then you can follow these steps:
    1) Make sure the external drive is formatted for the Mac.  You can use Disk Utility (applications-->utilities) and select the drive to find out if it's HFS Extended format.
    2) Quit iPhoto, then drag the iPhoto library onto the eternal drive and let it copy.
    3) Once it's done copying, hold down the Option key and click to launch iPhoto, it will ask you to select an iphoto library and you would choose the one on the external drive.
    4) You're safe to delete the original iPhoto Library from there.. however I still recommend you've made extra sure to back your stuff up.

  • How to install windows on separate internal drive?

    Hello,
I've been at this problem for a few days and need some help if anyone has a clue.
I have a late 2008 macbook pro 15". I've taken out my optical drive to install a SSD so that I can run both the existing internal drive and SSD as a DIY Fusion Drive. I'm in need of Windows now and tried to partition the existing fusion drive like I would normally do to install bootcamp. This doesn't seem to work. I then unfused the fusion drive back to two separate hard drives with the OS X Yosemite on the SSD and I want to install Windows on the existing Hard Drive. I've created a bootable Windows USB through the Bootcamp Assistance, but when it comes time to install the Windows install menu does not pop up. I would get a blank black screen which then I would have to restart and boot up into my OS X. In the OS X I can see that a bootcamp drive has been created, but it doesn't show up when I hold Option during the reboot.
If anyone knows what's going one, please let me know!
    Thank you!

Rather easy enough to do. People install XP and Vista all the time on 2, 3rd or 4th drive in Mac Pro. I know Vista 64-bit on Mac Pro has best support for addressing RAM and drivers.

  • Waiting for the disks to reappear with new 1 TB internal drive

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro 17inch Late 2011 model with OS X installed 10.10.1
Ran for two years with a 256 GB ssd boot drive and a 750 GB toshiba secondary internal drive.
Last week I replaced the 256 GB sad with a 1 TB SAMSUNG ssd, cloned it and it works fine.
I am writing this email on said mac
This week I updated the secondary 750 GB drive with a 1 TB Seagate ST1000LM014-1EJ164.
The Seagate is recognised by Disk Utility and when I try to format it as a 1 partion Mac OS Extended (Journaled) it allows me to do so.
Then the message comes up that it is waiting for the drive to reappear message. I have waited over night, all day, tried all combinations of the format, etc with out luck and with the same error.
So I took an identical model drive that I installed on one of my windows notebooks that had been running for a week with out issues and it has given me the same problem.
    Any comments appreciated !
    Br, mitch

What happens when you connect that 1 TB Seagate externally via USB?
    Ciao.

  • Does the late 2013 imac come pre-configured with a pcie internal drive or just "support" one?

Im looking at buying the new Imac. Is it just configurable after purchase (which no one would do given the complexity and cost and voided warranty)? There is no option to select pcie configuration during purchase and the language "The updated iMac now features support for PCIe-based flash storage..." from the official press release is vague.

The September 24, 2013 iMac press release states:
"The updated iMac now features support for PCIe-based flash storage that makes Fusion Drive and all-flash storage options up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation.*"
The Apple iMac page says the hard drive is:
Configurable to 3TB hard drive, 1TB or 3TB Fusion Drive, or 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of flash storage.
The Apple Mac Pro page says the hard drive is:
    PCIe-based flash storage
    Configurable to 512GB or 1TB2
So… does the iMac use PCIe or not. Perhaps some iMacs do and some don’t and Apple doesn’t want to say???

  • How to create new folders on iCloud Drive from iOS or with document picker?

Recently I wanted to share several files from my iWorks suite with my colleagues. I do not want them to edit these files, instead I made templates in Numbers for easier management of hours worked. Everyone could download their copy and keep a track of their hours themselves. The problem is, not everyone has an Apple product.
Unfortunately, iOS does not support native browsing of iCloud Drive (except the document picker, which, to me, isn't helpful at all), the only way I know of - to create a new folder - is to open iCloud.com in Safari, request the desktop site and make a new folder from there.
Is there another way of creating new folders, preferably an official app from Apple or from within an iWorks app or the document picker that I do not know of? Or is this actually a missing feature?
Also, if Apple could make an app similar to Microsoft OneDrive, that would be great.

Yes, there is a way. Here is the workaround. You can add notes folders directly with your iPad or iPhone.

  • How can I select a different internal drive to boot from?

I have 2 drives (bay 1 and 2) that are both bootable.
I'm just wondering - at startup how do I get a choice of which drive to boot from?
Right now it is booting up with the drive in bay 2, but I want it to boot from the drive in bay 1 (I want to do this so I can completely erase the drive currently in bay 2 and use it for something else).
A basic one. I'm sure there is some startup key command that I should use that will let me pick, just can't figure out what it is....
    Thanks!!

Press the Option key at startup, select the desired drive, and push the button with the straight arrow. To permanently change the setting, use the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

    hi Anil,
Check your settings in the Transaction code OKB9. In this transaction, default cost centers are maintained for each Company Code and Cost element.
Else you have defined default cost centers in your Cost Element. In such Case, use t-code KA02 and change the cost Center

  • How to configure new system landscape in portal server for bsp iview

    Hi
can you tell me what are the necessary parameters (apart form default parameters that were there while creating new system landscape) for configuring a system landscape for using it in bsp iviews.
    thanks & regards
    Ashutosh

    Hello,
what you call system name has to be the system alias, and this alias has to be the same between DEV/QUAL/PROD environment.
Your portal application will look for data/BAPIs/etc... with this alias. Your portal application will know on which environment it has to retrieve data/BAPIs/etc... will be defined in each system object you have defined for each environment.
