How to convert from ifs date format to sql based dates

I want to write a sql query using dates, to search an ifs
database. Ifs stores dates as numbers created using the
java.util.Date class. These dates are accurate to seconds.
PLSQL uses a different format.
What I need is a PLSQL function that converts PLSQL date format
to and from the java.util.date format.
This is an example of what I would like to do.

date values we store. These views are the supported way of
performing read-only operations against an iFS instance.
For yor reference, the Oracle date column is derived using the
following SQL operation (e.g. for createdate):

How to Convert Varchar2 to Date format(Timestamp)

I have a date saved in varchar2 column.
how can I convert the values into date(including Time stamp), so I can use the date to compare data.
Ex: I have the value '20-03-2007 05:31:29', but this value is saved as varchar2.
how can I take from this value the date '20-03-2007 05:31:29' as date format because later i need that date completely to add days, hours and minutes?

By Analysis:Go to edit analysis -->date(YYYYMMDD) column properties--->select Data format tab -->
enable Override Default Data Format check box and select date format as "Custom" then
Custom Date Formate mm/dd/yyy then test it
Also you can do it via evaluate function (analysis/RPD)

In short, NO, it's not possible. If you store dates correctly in the database as DATE datatype then you don't have this problem. If you store them as VARCHAR2 you have a problem.
So, you get a date of 20092012
Is that 20th September 2012? or is it 20th December 2009?

Is that 11th January 2012 or 12th January 2011?
Dates should never be stored on the database as strings. That is why Oracle gives you a DATE datatype so you can store them properly.
Also, when dates are passed from an application to the database, the application should be passing them as DATE datatype, and the application interface should be designed to accept dates from the user in a format specific to their country/locality and it would then know what that format is and automatically convert it to a DATE datatype before it gets anywhere near the database or any SQL.

I understand the converions for formatting dates. Thank you for this posting, it helped a lot. Now I need to take this one step further and that is modifying a date that comes the XML Datasource in the format I do not want.
Start Date is the name of the field. It is in XML and my RTF as 2009/10/03 and I want 10/03/2009 or 03-Oct-2009.
Any help on this is most appreciated.

How to convert internal table data to PDF format

I have an internal table data having one field with 255 chars. length.I want to send that intenal table data as attachemnt with external mail. i am thinking of converting that data into PDF format and use the FM to send the mail. How to convert internal table data to PDF format.

In which format is your data in the internal table currently. Is it returned by a smartform/script or its just data fetched from some database table into an internal table. Since its obvious that the data should appear in the PDF with some Layout, you should be using smartform to format the data properly. See the Link

How can I change the date format in both Notes and Reminders? Preference on Imac and Settings in IOS do not allow me to change the format in those 2 apps.
I Like to see 10oct rather than 10/10, as an example.

I do not have Mavericks or iOS - but the first thing I would do is reset the defaults - I'll use Mavericks as an example

Here's the result AppleScript i use to grab the " 'Short Date' ' + ' 'Short Time' " to paste into download filenames - works good until I try to post it here - the colon " : " is a no-no but is fine in the Finder

        )d can be any DATE, including the DATE returned by the TO_DATE function, above.

Converting varchar2 to date format

I've converted date formats many times, but for some reason I'm getting an invalid number error when trying to convert a varchar2 column. I've tried the to_char and to_date function and I get the same result. The column is a date and it is formatted as DD-MON-YYYY, but I want to change it to MM/DD/YYYY. My query is below:
select to_date('fccpdate','MM/DD/YYYY')
from cc_class_scmast_v
When I try to_date I get this:
Error starting at line 1 in command:
select TO_DATE('fccpdate', 'DD-MON-YYYY') from cc_class_scmast_v where fccpdate IS NOT NULL
Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-01858: a non-numeric character was found where a numeric was expected
01858. 00000 - "a non-numeric character was found where a numeric was expected"
*Cause:    The input data to be converted using a date format model was
incorrect. The input data did not contain a number where a number was
required by the format model.
*Action:   Fix the input data or the date format model to make sure the
elements match in number and type. Then retry the operation.

Literals are enclosed in single-quotes, identifiers (including column names) are not. 'fccpdate' is the literal 8-character string containing 'f', 'c;, another 'c', 'p', 'd', 'a', 't' and 'e'. fccpdate (without single-quotes) can be the name of a column.
If fccpdate is a string, such as '18-JUL-2012', then you can convert it to a DATE using TO_DATE.

This question is better answered by thinking about about how Oracle dates work. SYSDATE is a pseudocolumn (function without any arguments) that returns a date value: it already is a date. Oracle date values are stored not as we see them, say 'DD-MON-YY', but as a series of bytes with the different date components from the millennium down to the second. We NEVER see dates as they are stored but use the formats for automatic conversion.
To display a date the way you want use TO_CHAR() with an edit mask or as others suggested change your NLS_DATE_FORMAT (thought I advise against this as most systems use DD-MON-YY and porting queries from other systems or even OTN can easily break). To change a converted string back to a date use TO_DATE() with an edit mask.
