How to create a smallest file size pdf from indesign CS4 document

How to create a smallest file size pdf (suitable for upload to a website) from indesign CS4 document which contains multiple illustrator CS4 illustrations.
I have chosen the "smallest file size option" but the pdf file is over 30MB, can anyone help please.
Thank you

One trick is to
Set the placed graphics to have a transparency of 99.9% (you can do this with Find/Change and select Objects)
This is enough to force the graphics throught the Transparency Flattener
Next set the Transparency Blend Space to RGB (Edit>Transparency Blend Space)
Next set a custom Transparency Flattner Preset Edit>Transparency Flattner
Next
Use File>Export and choose
Smallest file size
PDF Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)
In Advanced Section - go to transparency and selec the new Flattener Preset you created.
*this will convert your vectors to raster, but it should reduce your file size

    what happened?

I used default setting each time...now that its updated, I cannot compare it to before the date
    can anyone check these settings?

  • Exporting file to pdf from internet, the document its in blank or incomplete

When i export a file to pdf from internet, the document is in blank or incomplete. Its the same if i donwload in a PC or opening online. The trouble is only in this PC, and i try with diferent browsers.
I try deleting temporary files, upgrading a latest version of Reader and modifying the security configuration in the browser.
    Any idea?

    Hi da23841142,
What are you using to export the file to PDF? Or, are you simply downloading a PDF file from the Internet, and then trying to view it in Reader? What version of Reader are you using, and are you on Mac OS or Windows?

  • Cannot print to Adobe PDF from InDesign CS4 under Snow Leopard (10.6.2)

    Hello All,
Hopefully the subject line says all. Running SL and CS4, and after manually deleting the "old" Adobe PDF 9.0 driver, I am unable to print to PDF — or select "Save As Adobe PDF" under the Mac OS print dialog. This is insanely frustrating on may levels, as this was once a 3-minute operation and now has stretched into two days of futile searching for a solution.
There is a "tech doc" somewhere out there that offers a "solution". But beware, as it has not worked for me. Once you manually search for and remove the Adobe PDF 9.0 driver, you are supposed to magically be able to select the "Save As Adobe PDF" option. This is not the case for me.
Am trying to print, once again, from InDesign CS4 (NOT via the Export command as that will not allow me to set page size, or print separations). There is no Adobe PDF driver there anymore and there is no option to print PDFs. Of course, I can rest easier with the knowledge that everything is easier now in SL.

For a long time I was printing out of InDesign CS4 to a PS file and Distilling to a PDF, either composite or separated. Then Snow Leopard came along and that workflow seemed no longer available. It seems some well meaning people didn't understand a professional DTP workflow.
I had to work between two Macs to create a project and then make separations.
Eventually I went back to the Adobe InDesign forums and folks insisted that a Adobe PDF 9 printer should be available in my print drivers.
On that suggestion I completely uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and then reinstalled it.
It worked, I had the PDF printer back and can now print to a postscript file and do separations as I always have.
(Another story is that Snow Leopard killed my Epson 2200 printer)
At one stage I did an update of Acrobat 9 and it caused me to lose the Adobe printer again. Going through the procedure again brought it back and this time after a Acrobat 9 update it stuck.
In my opinion somebody screwed up. It's not enough to be able to create PDFs out of Microsoft Word. There are people out here trying to make a living and need to be able to create print separations for some offset printers.

  • How do I scan large black and white documents, creating the smallest file size possible?

I am attempting to scan a 70 page document and prefer it to be a file small enough to send through regular email.  I am not interested in zipfiles, i am not familiar with them.  I have been scanning and converting to .pdf for years, using the lowest dpi reasonable, but my file sizes are still quite large (compared to other .pdf's that are emailed to me).  I know there is a way, just haven't figured it out.

  • Why does text in Smallest File Size PDF change point size and vertical scaling?

If you have a document with 6 pt. type (no scaling) and Save As a Screen-Quality PDF, when you open that resulting PDF in Illustrator, the 6 pt. type has become 5.1 pt. type with vertical scaling of 117.65%! Normally, I would have no reason to open the PDF in Illustrator, but our clients are doing it. They want the smallest possible PDFs but still want to be able to check the point sizes for legal reasons. If you Save As a High Quality Print PDF, the type is fine, but that won't always work if there are alot of images and the file size needs to be kept as small as possible.

sorry for 2 posts, technical problem with forums and images.
Leading changed to 7.2, but as you know when going to pdf paragraphs are broken up into seperate lines.

  • How do you make the smallest pdf from InDesign CS4 but retain some sharpness?

I have a 2 page brochure, front and back with layered photoshop files and when I make the small pdf I need to make a 100kb file like a client has done in the past. The smallest I can make the pdf file is 460kb.  It will not go smaller no matter what I do. Of course I can enter final resolution as 72 dpi but the photos become very fuzzy. I have even reduced the file sizes of the photos and replaced them in the document. The file size remains the same.  My client said that Illustrator reduced the size for him smaller in the past but I don't think that is the solution.  How do you retain some sharpness in a pdf but keep the file size at a very minimum?

But InDesign CS4 outputs the file no matter what at 460 kb for me.
Still don't know why they got 100 kb.
By not using InDesign. Scott is on the right track by mentioning Distiller - which makes PDFs that are smaller than what InDesign can export. Illustrator can be used (improperly*) in the same way. Both methods can strip out stuff that you don't need if you don't care about printing quality, don't care about reliable display across multiple platforms, don't care about precisely how your fonts are embedded, don't care about the lawsuit that the blind people using screenreaders are going to bring against you, and so on. I don't know which of the above is not in your client's 100k file, or which of the things in my above list will be stripped out by using Distiller or Illustrator, but I bet that one of the people who has already posted in your thread does know, and might be talked into telling us.
But, if you're trying to make your client happy and aren't actually personally invested in making the smallest PDFs known to man, and if you're located in the US, then perhaps the phrases "screenreaders... blind... accessibilty... lawsuit" spoken together might induce your client to rethink this arbitrary desire for miniscule file size of PDFs.
Alternately, you could just save postscript out of both PDFs and just look at the .ps files in your favorite raw-text viewer.
    * I'm surprised that Adobe Employee Dov Isaacs hasn't come along to tell us what a bad idea this is.

  • PDFs from InDesign CS4 too large

I'm trying to make a small PDF of a 20pp A4 publication (magazine) to email to my client (file/adobe PDF presets), but no matter what I do the files are huge. This never used to be an issue in earlier versions of CS??? Help Please

    Boy, things are running along.
phairway: What's your goal? Are you all set? Do you want to fix the bug in CS4 (ha ha) or just want a workaround? It sounds like you've got a workaround so you are basically all set?
Hawkeye_Tui: You should have the tools necessary to either solve your problem or tell us more about it so we can help you solve it. How are you doing with that?
    Moving right along...
I'm going to go out on a limb a little bit here and disagree with the "conventional wisdom" on this forum, that EPS files are somehow "bad" or "deprecated." There's nothing wrong with them inherently, and they do fill some niches that are otherwise unfilled, which makes them important. But they can cause you problems, and they are no longer the format of choice.
A ".ai" file is just a PDF file (with extra information). PDFs are less likely to run into problems with EPS files.
    Bob says:
As already pointed out, EPS is ecapsulated. Stop using it.
There's nothing wrong with "encapsulation." In this context, it means that EPS files are a restricted subset of PostScript files that are only permitted to use a subset of the PostScript language (things like not modifying global state, not printing on more than one page, not drawing outside the bounding box that the comment at the top of the file indicates it will adhere to), and that it follows particular Document Structuring Conventions (DSCs) with special comments at the top of the file that tell an EPS-compliant application information about the file, such as the bounding box of the image.
PDF files are similar to EPS in this way -- they are almost an even-further restricted subset of the PostScript language, except they have their own format and are containerized differently, and the restrictions are...better-enforced.
It used to be the case that it was easier to specify a bounding box in an EPS file than a PDF file, because in a PDF you had to specify the page size, which always "felt wrong" to me...
Anyhow, an EPS file may have several ways of specifying the bounding box of the image, and [speculation] it's possible that CS3 and CS4 look at different methods. Or your EPS File may not be properly compliant, and might disagree with itself. It's [mostly] just a text file, so you can look at it in your favorite text editor (e.g. Notepad under WIndows or TextEdit on a Mac), and it should start something like this:
    %!PS-Adobe-2.0
    %%Title: patch.eps
    %%Creator: fig2dev Version 3.2 Patchlevel 4
    %%CreationDate: Thu Jan 19 14:45:39 2006
    %%For: [email protected]
    %%Orientation: Landscape
    %%Pages: 1
    %%BoundingBox: 0 0 612 792
    %%DocumentPaperSizes: letter
    %%BeginSetup
Sometimes you might see a  %%HiResBoundingBox  in addition, or maybe a %%CropBox. If those differ from the BoundingBox, they might be the source of your problem. It's instructive to look.
phairway, can you post screenshots of the exported PDFs from CS4 and CS4? I admit I'm having some trouble visualizing the effect you're actually describing. You might also try the CS5 trial and see how that works -- since the chances of a fix to your problem in CS4 seem vanishly small.
Back on the philosophical rant...I don't really feel like PSD files are a good substitute for EPS files...They're not an open format, not publicly documented. (Though, I was quite surprised to discover ImageMagick can read them...). That pretty much leaves PDF files.
Anyhow, I think Acrobat Professional's PDF optimizer should certainly be able "see inside" EPS files inside PDF files.

  • Problem Exporting as PDF from InDesign CS4 on XP SP3

  • Special letters do not export to PDF from InDesign CS4

I have just installed Indesign CS4 and gathered all the fonts I needed from my old computer. Everything has gone well until I tried to export my document to PDF. The PDF showed the Icelandic special "Ð" and "Þ" letters as a missing letter, a white space or a simple box. This only happens in several typefaces, namely Helvetica Neue, Cohin and Times. (and maybe some others). Note that the special letters are shown in InDesign. I reckon that there is some problem whit the export… Can anybody help me?

You can check the "Advanced" section when you export the PDF to make sure that fonts are being embedded. Both d-with-bar and thorn are part of the glyph complement of Helvetica Neue, so either the font is not being embedded, or something is wrong in ID. You can also go to the "Composition" section of the Preferences and put a check into the "Substituted Glyphs" box to make sure that the d-with-bar and thorn that are appearing in your ID doc are actually part of the font (which they should be).

  • Images chopped off when creating a mobi file with kindlegen from inDesign epub

I'm having difficulty with a reflowable ebook project which includes line drawing illustrations. They are mainly looking good all sized at 600px wide (all greyscale gifs under 127k) and exporting with object export options set to CSS: relative to text flow. Where they fall in the middle of text on a page they look great, most are landscape format, wider than they are tall. However once they are exported if they fall near the bottom of the page they just disappear off the page, in some cases you just catch a tiny glimpse of the top and the rest has gone, it does not appear on the following page. I've tried a variety of export combinations include page breaks before, after and before and after and it's just not making a difference.
I'm using Indesign CC (2014) on a mac and then opening with Kindle previewer and letting kindlegen convert to a .mobi. If I open the epub with digital editions the same thing is occurring. It is an mobi file I need at the end of the process. It seems to happen whatever device I use to emulate the preview on The Kindle previewer and illustrations may appear whole in one view then disappear on another, depending on how it's reflowing. I've also sent it to my kindle and it's definitely chopping the images off on that.
Is there anyway I can ensure the whole image is displayed, I thought adding a page break before would do it but this doesn't seem to be working I'd even live with the nasty gaps that would give me. I've applied paragraph styles, object styles and looked at the export options, wondering if I've got in a mess here somehow - what takes priority?
I'd like to do this in inDesign, I have looked at the code in sigil and can only tell that the images are consistently coded, not sure how they should read.
Any help with this would be great as I'm going round and round now!

    Hi Monica
Thanks for your reply it made me focus on the export options and stop messing with styles. I decided it was time to start again, so I created a new document with the intent set to digital publishing (I've not bothered with this previously and it's not seemed to matter) and copied across the contents of the book I only had to recreate a TOC everything else styles wise copied across fine and I re-imported the meta-data then tried epub export again, in Object settings I selected use original image and selected relative to text flow, and it's working! I wonder if something has changed in InDesign CC 2014 because I never used a digital publishing intent document before as I thought the page setup had no bearing on the epub export..? (This was exactly the same export settings I had tried with my original document which was derived from a print version) Anyway I have a solution, I'm not needing to use the page breaks as the images are being put as I wanted in the text flow if they fit, on the next page if not, which is fine. Now if I could just sort the space before in paragraph styles when it's the first item in a text box, so that a dedication could sit in the middle of the page... but I guess that's another question!

  • How to create and instance of Java Object from an XML Document.

    Hi,
How can we use a XML Document to create an instance of Java Object and do vice versa ie from the Java Object creating the XML Document.
XML Document is available in the form of a String Object.
Are there helper class available to achieve this.
I need to do this in a Servlet.

JAXB is part of JavaSE while Xmlbeans claims full schema support and full infoset fidelity.
If the standard APIs do all that you need well then use them.

  • Problems exporting pdf from indesign CS4

when I export a pdf using flattening the pdf contains lines (1 pixel) that contain 1-2% more black. The image used in the file (see below) is a transparant psd on a gradient.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
    Thank you
    Jeroen

Just because a printer demands flattened transparency in PDF files they accept, doesn't mean that it is proper practice. Flattened transparency and lack of full color management requires what is effectively a highly device dependent PDF file where you know exactly what the device's color space and resolution are at the time you perform the transparency flattening. As far as we are concerned, any print service provider that refuses a properly created PDF file with live transparency and color management is a print provider, where the word service is definitely not appropriate. Such printers would rather blame you, the customer, for problems as opposed to using their professional skills and provide service to you.
Although Adobe is a vendor member of the Ghent PDF Workgroup (in fact, I am Adobe's representative to that group), Adobe does not endorse use of its PDF/X Plus standards and settings until such time such standards and settings are based on PDF/X-4. Such a change is supposed to occur within the next year.
In terms of the actual artifacts you are seeing, do the same artifacts show when you print to a local PostScript printer?
What do you see and how does it print if you export using the PDF/X-4 settings?
And finally, to respond to Peter Spier's comment, I highly doubt that TIFF or PSD would make any difference in theory (although I have learned that you can't always count on theory ).

    On first sight:
    myJPGSaveOptions.interlaced = false;
JPEG save options don't have an 'interlaced' property; that was for PNGs only. Check Photoshop's Script Help for the specific JPEG options.
