How to crop 16x9 to 4x3  ?

I have some footage which is 16x9. I need to crop to 4x3. Please tell me how. Thank You.

as david showed... there are many other solutions... here are two ideas…
with the little info you gave (what fcp u r working in, dv/hd/other, etc) here are some thoughts:
in the canvas window, (turn on/click) image + wireframe and show tile safe (so you can see results in canvas window).
In the Viewer window go to the Motion tab.
1 (under basic motion) you can scale down the footage to keep the full frame in play (it will letter box the footage)
or
2 In the Viewer window go to the Motion tab.
(under crop) you can crop the left and right of the image.

    Welcome to the forums.
You can use the crop effect.
You can use the scale effect to "zoom" into a specific area of a clip.
You will also find links to many free tutorials in the PremiereProPedia that will quickly show you how things are done in Premiere Pro.

  • How to crop or cut a clip on the top or at one side?

    Hi,
I would like to know how to crop a clip either on top or at one side?
    Thank you in advance

I havent cropped that way before, but this should work. Double click the part of your clip you want to crop, in the viewer click the motion tap and select crop. You can adjust your parameters there, you should see your result in the canvas window. You will need to add markers if this effect ia for a portion of your clip.
Check out the tutorials on apples website about adding motion.

  • Beginner question: can i have 16x9 and 4x3 footage on the same timeline?

    Hi,
I am assembling a highlight promo reel for somebody and i have 16x9 and 4x3 footage. not sure what to do or which footage to convert, since i need them both for the promo. any suggestions would be appreciated, or please direct me to a past discussion.
    thank you

If the majority of your footage is 4:3 work in a Timeline that is 4:3.
Your 16:9 footage will letterbox automatically to fit with black bars at top and bottom.
You could also cache the 4:3 material with the Widescreen filter to fake a 16:9 look.
If the majority is 16:9, use a 16:9 Timeline. Your 4:3 footage will pillarbox -black bars at left and right.
You could fill that area in by placing a copy of the 4:3 above itself on the Timeline. Enlarge and blur the lower layer to give your clip a complimentary "border". Simply blowing up 4:3 video to fit a 16:9 Timeline will make it look horrible.

  • New filters - how to crop and level?

I can see how to crop, using the motion filter, or to use one of the filters to mask off a certain portion of a clip. And I see where you can use the motion filter to rotate a clip a bit in order to correct for tripod tilt.
But I don't know how to use them together to get the result I want, which is a cropped clip with straight edges with a slightly rotated clip inside the straight edges. What I get is a tilted, cropped clip, the sort of thing you routinely do for a still photo in iPhoto.

You don't want to crop. You need to scale up. The more you rotate the more you'll have to scale up the image.

  • How to crop a QuickTime movie to delete black top and bottom areas?

How to crop a QuickTime movie? I mean, a ".mov" movie that shows a black area on top and bottom, which I want to delete.
I have tried with iMovie 8.0.5, yet its "Window - Cropping..." to fit, crop and Ken burns does not allow to select the area that I want, which is extra wide.
    Thanks.

How to crop a QuickTime movie? I mean, a ".mov" movie that shows a black area on top and bottom, which I want to delete.
Basically, you have two options. 1) You can use an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) which allows you to reset the top/bottom/left/right screen edges (i.e., crop the active viewing area) and then re-compress the remaining content as a new file (as recommended by QTKirk) or 2) if you have QT Pro, you can simply "mask" the player display which crops the display screen to the desired mask dimension and location within the original area. The advantage of the latter work flow is not having to re-compress the file which can be very time consuming. Since the latter method may seem confusing to some, I have prepared a "quickie" tutorial which may be able to "talk" you through the process:

To edit pixel you should use Photoshop. There are workarounds to crop pixel images in Illy, but all demand that you embed the image. Then it gets converted into the document's color space, which might not be desired. So do your pixel editing in Photoshop.

  • How to Crop an .AVI media in PP CS4 if possible at all.

Yes I'd like to know how to crop an AVI clip" I googled the question and got a lot of photoshop answers instead. What I wanted to do is, using an original clip get  2 short portions of it. that is of two different people jumping out of a plane and have them both spinning inversely 360 degree to the length of a song. I did it but was annoyed with the black edges on either side of the clips, especially interfering with the spinning of each clips (BTW I did export these two short clips after fitting them to the frame in a new sequence but the result is still the same, I hoped the new avi would not have the black edges, but it did not work!) I even would have preferred my two clips to be square for better visual balance but was unable to do this either. This may be a kind of picture in picture or in this case two pics in one. Thank you in advance for any tips

In the Effects Panel (not the Effects Control Panel), there is a little query box. Just type "crop," and it would have popped up - just do not forget to clear that query box, of you will not see your other Effects.
As for a Google search, I would have done advanced, with the string "Adobe Premiere Pro" and then the word "crop" and "effect" above.
THIS is the second hit, with about the same, but for CS3, that I got. Cropping is more commonly used in still Image editing, such as with PS, so most hits on "crop" will probably throws 1000's of PS references. By putting in that string, where all words are kept together and in order, we eliminated nearly all of those.
    Good luck,

How to crop and remove some part of a photo

You can use the crop tool for that, assuming you want to take a slice off it.
(in my menu it is listed above the eyedropper tool, or you could just press C)
You can then drag the box edges to fit the selection you want to keep.
To be more precise, turn off snapping by unchecking snap at View > Snap
If this does not do what you want, it would be handy if you added an image and description of what you want to change.

  • 16x9 and 4x3 mind blowing weirdness

    I'm stumped.
I have a DVD project containing both 16x9 and 4x3 material. All are in separate tracks, no mixing of the different aspects in the same track. When I click on each track, the info is correct. 4x3 material is flagged as 4x3, it displays full screen in the 4x3 simulation and pillar boxed in the 16x9 simulation. Same with the 16x9 material. It all looks right in DVDSP.
Then I play the disc in both a 16x9 TV and a 4x3 TV. On the 16x9 set, the 16x9 material looks fine, it fills the screen. But the 4x3 material also fills screen and is therefore stretched horizontally, making everyone short and fat.
Of equal bummerness, on the 4x3 TV, the 16x9 material fills the frame , and is therefore stretched vertically, making everyone tall and skinny.
I've set the display mode for 16x9 assets to 16x9 letterbox and 4x3 assets to 4x3.
What the heck am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your help on this by the way!
    Good experiment. Here's what happened...
I made a disc with just a single 4x3 asset. Into the DVD player, and it still filled the full 16x9 screen... distorted.
So I did the unthinkable... I pulled out my TV manual. There are 4 settings for the screen aspect. "normal" "full" "zoom" and "wide zoom". There's also an "autowide" function. Which is now and always has been , on.
The autowide function seems to work fine when watching TV. I switch to a channel that's 4x3, the screen displays 4x3, and when I click the screen button, it says the setting is "normal". Then I switch to an HD channel, the picture goes wide, and I click the button and it's changed to "full". So it appears the TV is switching properly, based on the input, at least when it comes to TV.
the same doesn't appear to hold true for the DVD player. I have to manually set the screen to "full" and then 16x9 material looks right, then when the 4x3 comes on, I have to set it to "normal" and it looks right.
So, either the "autowide" setting on the TV is not getting information from the DVD player about aspect (in which case is it the DVD player or the disc I made?) or the "autowide" function just simply doesn't work with DVDs and you always have to manually set the screen.
And... I still don't know why my 16x9 "letterbox" assets played vertically stretched, filling the screen on a 4x3 TV.
Does this help you at all? I'm still stumped... but again, thanks for sticking with me!

  • How can I go from 16x9 to 4x3 in Final Cut Pro X?

I have cropperd my clip to a correct size but I still have the black side bars in the viewer even though I have changed the resolution from the properties to 1280x1080. So how can I get rid of the black boxes in the end result?

Only standard definition is 4:3. There is no 4:3 in HD. What is media?

  • Cropping from 16x9 to 4x3, possible in FCE4?

I look and look but can't seem to find the place in the manual that talks about this.. can I crop an HD wide video to 4 by 3 dimensions, taking the middle of the image like they do when they bring movies down to TV size?
I have some productions under way that will be viewed on a regular TV and I'd like my existing HD shots to fill the screen, so I want to crop to the center and change aspect ratio... can I do this?

Put the edited HD material into a DV sequence. It will automatically scale down so it's letterboxed. If you want it center cut, scale the nested sequence back up so it's cut off left and right, put fills the screen top to bottom.

  • Import 16x9 from 4x3 camera MiniDV

I have footage shot in 16x9 on a Canon camera. I want to import with an older Sony camera that is 4x3. Will this work?
Reason: Canon firewire port stopped working and causes any Mac it's connected to to freeze/crash.

How does it look on the Sony camera? It really would help to know what the camera model is. Make sure you you use a DV NTSC anamorphic preset.

  • How to create 16x9 HD QT movie using photos?

While I kind of know photography, I am far from an FCP expert. I am trying to create a time lapse movie of my photos (i.e. a sunset) in HD 1920x1080 and end up with a HD QT movie. So far I have created a 16x9 frame that looks more like SD and the image in the frame does not fill it (get black bars above and below it so that the 1920x1080 image is squashed vertically inside the 16x9 frame). Over the past few months, I have asked many people who know fcp well but they don't seem to know how to work with photos.
The image files are from a Nikon D2x; image is cropped to 1920x1080, square pixels, 10 quality jpeg.
    FCP 5 settings: sequence preset is HDTV 1080i (16x9)/have tried pixel aspect ratio of HD (1280x1080) (there is no 1920x1080 option?) and square, have tried compressor DVCPRO HD 1080i60 & H.264, Quality is 100%;
Capture preset is HDTV 1080i(16x9) but I don't plan to use footage (for now)just photos. And have tried many other setting - with no better result.
I then export in QT Conversion in 1920x1080HD & H.264
And I always get black bars & squashed image and not HD quality (certainly nothing near the quality of the photos). Sorry for the long post but I really hope there is a way for this to work. Hopefully it's something simple that I'm doing wrong. Thank you.

Double click on an image. It will open in the viewer. On the Motion tab tab twirl down the Distort tab and check your aspect ratio. Set it to 0 ( or whatever it takes too fill the frame). Go back to the original image in the timeline. Right click (or control click) select copy. Select all the other images right click again, then Paste Attributes. Select the distort option. You should be there.
