How to determine which archive logs are needed in flashback.

Hi,
Let's assume I have archive logs 1,2,3,4, then a "backup database plus archivelogs" in RMAN, and then archive logs 5+6. If I want to flashback my database to a point immediately after the backup, how do I determine which archive logs are needed?
I would assume I'd only need archive logs 5 and/or 6 since I did a full backup plus archivelogs and the database would have been checkpointed at that time. I'd also assume archive logs 1,2,3,4 would be obsolete as they would have been flushed to the datafiles in the checkpoint.
Are my assumptions correct? If not what queries can I run to determine what files are needed for a flashback using the latest checkpointed datafiles?
Thanks.

Thanks for the explanation, let me be more specific with my problem.
I am trying to do a flashback on a failed primary database, the only reason why I want to do a flashback is because dataguard uses the flashback command to try and synchronize the failed database. Specifically dataguard is trying to run:
FLASHBACK DATABASE TO SCN 865984
But it fails, if I run it manually then I get:
SQL> FLASHBACK DATABASE TO SCN 865984;
FLASHBACK DATABASE TO SCN 865984
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-38754: FLASHBACK DATABASE not started; required redo log is not available
ORA-38761: redo log sequence 5 in thread 1, incarnation 3 could not be accessed
Looking at the last checkpoint I see:
CHECKPOINT_CHANGE#
865857
Also looking at the archive logs:
RECID STAMP THREAD# SEQUENCE# FIRST_CHANGE# FIRST_TIM NEXT_CHANGE# RESETLOGS_CHANGE# RESETLOGS
25 766838550 1 1 863888 10-NOV-11 863892 863888 10-NOV-11
26 766838867 1 2 863892 10-NOV-11 864133 863888 10-NOV-11
27 766839225 1 3 864133 10-NOV-11 864289 863888 10-NOV-11
28 766839340 1 4 864289 10-NOV-11 864336 863888 10-NOV-11
29 766840698 1 5 864336 10-NOV-11 865640 863888 10-NOV-11
30 766841128 1 6 865640 10-NOV-11 865833 863888 10-NOV-11
31 766841168 1 7 865833 10-NOV-11 865857 863888 10-NOV-11
How can I determine what archive logs are needed by a flashback command? I deleted any archive logs with a SCN less than the checkpoint #, I can restore them from backup but I am trying to figure out how to query what is required for a flashback. Maybe this coincides with the point that flashbacks have nothing to do with the backups of datafiles or the checkpoints?

  • How to find out which archived logs needed to recover a hot backup?

    I'm using Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.1.0).
I have backed up a database when it is online using the following backup script through RMAN
    connect target /
    run {
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup
    incremental level=0 cumulative
    filesperset 4
    format '/san/u01/app/backup/DB_%d_%T_%u_%c.rman'
    database
}The backup set contains the backup of datafiles and control file. I have copied all the backup pieces to another server where I will restore/recover the database but I don't know which archived logs are needed in order to restore/recover the database to a consistent state.
I have not deleted any archived log.
How can I find out which archived logs are needed to recover the hot backup to a consistent state? Can this be done by querying V$BACKUP_DATAFILE and V$ARCHIVED_LOG? If yes, which columns should I query?
    Thanks for any help.

    A few ways :
1a. Get the timestamps when the BACKUP ... DATABASE began and ended.
1b. Review the alert.log of the database that was backed up.
1c. From the alert.log identify the first Archivelog that was generated after the begin of the BACKUP ... DATABASE and the first Archivelog that was generated after the end of the BACKUP .. DATABASE.
1d. These (from 1c) are the minimal Archivelogs that you need to RECOVER with. You can choose to apply additional Archivelogs that were generated at the source database to contininue to "roll-forward"
2a. Do a RESTORE DATABASE alone.
2b. Query V$DATAFILE on the restored database for the lowest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# and CHECKPOINT_TIME. Also query for the highest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# and CHECKPOINT_TIME.
2c. Go back to the source database and query V$ARCHIVED_LOG (FIRST_CHANGE#) to identify the first Archivelog that has a higher SCN (FIRST_CHANGE#) than the lowest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# from 2b above. Also query for the first Archivelog that has a higher SCN (FIRST_CHANGE#) than the highest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# from 2b above.
2d. These (from 2c) are the minimal Archivelogs that you need to RECOVER with.
(why do you need to query V$ARCHIVED_LOG at the source ? If RESTORE a controlfile backup that was generated after the first Archivelog switch after the end of the BACKUP ... DATABASE, you would be able to query V$ARCHIVED_LOG at the restored database as well. That is why it is important to force an archivelog (log switch) after a BACKUP ... DATABASE and then backup the controlfile after this -- i.e. last. That way, the controlfile that you have restored to the new server has all the information needed).
    3. RESTORE DATABASE PREVIEW in RMAN if you have the archivelogs and subsequent controlfile in the backup itself !

  • How CSSCAN determines which indexes need to be rebuild ?

    Hi everybody,
i'm currently migrating 3 Oracle databases that contain CP1252 characters unproperly stored in WE8ISO8859P1 instances.
The key steps of the migration are :
    1. ALTERing CHARACTERSET to WE8MSWIN1252
    2. changing CHARACTER SEMANTIC LENGTH for CHAR and VARCHAR2 columns
    3. truncating data stored in VARCHAR2(4000) columns
    2. Full export
    3. Full import in a ALL32UTF8 instance
To do all of this (and especially the step 3), i use the CSSCAN utility (very practical !!!).
And i have a question about CSSCAN: how CSSCAN determines which indexes need to be rebuild. What is the logic ?
Looking at the CSSCAN report, i have a lot of cells/columns that are affected by the characterset migration, and i have just a few index to rebuild.
Why would i like to understand the logic ? Because i would like to rebuild ONLY indexes that REALLY need to be rebuilt and i am not sure that all the indexes specified by CSSCAN really need to be rebuilt.
Thanks for any information about that.
    (and sorry for my english)
NB: i have managed "function-based indexes" specifically: i drop them before the export, and i recreate them after the import. So my question mostly target the "regular indexes"

    1. All indexes whose key contains at least one character column with convertible or exceptional data, excluding indexes with names equal to some constraint name for the same owner.
    plus
    2. All functional indexes on tables that have columns needing conversion, excluding indexes with names equal to some constraint name for the same owner.
The condition regarding constraints does not seem to be very fortunate but it comes from times when the appropriate flag in index metadata was not yet available.
But note that in your migration scenario, you do not actually have to care much about indexes. Step 1 & 2 do not need any modifications to the user data and hence to index contents. Step 3, if done through UPDATE, will modify affected indexes automatically. Step 4 does not affect the database. Step 5 will recreate all existing indexes anyway.

  • How to determine which elements are queryable via Web Services QueryPage

I am trying to query opportunities by associated opportunity product revenue records, but I continue to receive errors like "Unexpected text: = '9598015'".
From reviewing the forums, it looks like this is when I am querying a field that is not defined to be queryable.
Could someone please tell me how to determine which fields are queryable on a particular record type like this? I have tried using basic short text fields and indexed short text fields - but continue to receive the error message above.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to determine which Visual C++ Redistributables are really required?

A client's PC came with a whole load of unwanted Desktop-Applications pre-installed, which were consequently removed. Unfortunately, there are still various generations of Visual C++ runtimes to be found on the system. - Is there a reliable way
to determine which of those are still needed after cleaning up those unwanted apps?
    ________________ drahnier

    Hi,
Let's take Microsoft Visual C++2010 Redistributable Package as example:
The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package installs runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run applications developed with Visual C++ on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2010 installed.
This package installs runtime components of C Runtime (CRT), Standard C++, ATL, MFC, OpenMP and MSDIA libraries.
While, I don't think there any reliable way to determine which of those package still needed after removed them.
In my opinion, these package doesn't occupy too much space, why not keep them in case an application that need them.

  • How to determine which photos are not in an album?

I have @ 5500 photos in V2.01 vor Os 10.2.8. I would like to determine which photo's are not in an album. I know I can write a perl script to do print this information, but it might be nicer if done from within iTunes.

    Billy,
There is a way that will take a little time but will give you the results.
Write down the name of all your Albums and number them.
In iPhoto add the new numbers (corresponding to the albums) as keywords.
After all the number keywords have been added you need to give the images in each album that numbered keyword.
Highlight an album in the source column, select all, then assign them the number keyword for that album.
do this for all the albums.
Make sure your view is set to view keywords.
You should be able to see any photo that does not have one of those number keywords.
there might be a simpler way, but I don't have iPhoto 2 to test for you.

  • SharePoint Databases - How to determine which ones are being used and which ones aren't

I am not sure where to exactly post this question.  On the SQL Server side or on a SharePoint side.
I am a SQL Server Database Administrator who is monitoring some SharePoint databases.  On a daily basis it seems that they are creating new databases but don't delete the databases that they are no longer using.  For example, they might be testing
on a development server and if things aren't working properly instead of asking that the databases be deleted they just go ahead and create new databases to do what ever they need to do.  Is there a way on the SQL Server side to determine which SharePoint
databases are being used and which ones aren't being used?  Or does one determine this information through the SharePoint Central Administration console?

  • Archive logs are being shipped, but are not applied

    Hi everyone,
Some strange things are happening when I try to configure an Oracle Data Guard setup. Currently I am at the point where the configuration has been completed, and I just need to sync the standby database to the primary one. I can see in the log files that the archive logs are being shipped, but they are not applied on the standby system.
If I run "recover standby database;" manually in sqlplus I can see that it is trying to apply an archive log which is way too old (ORA-00279: change 9656498443 generated at 04/29/2008 08:45:08 needed for thread 1).
In the alert log I can also see this error: Warning: Recovery target destination is in a sibling branch of the controlfile checkpoint. Recovery will only recover changes to datafiles.
At this point I was thinking that the standby database might be on a different incarnation compared to the primary, but this is not the case, they are both in incarnation 6:
    6       6       MVF      4023175798       CURRENT 48493546257 13-06-21
Does anyone have an idea how this could happen, and how I could fix this issue?
    Thanks, JM.

The restore did not cause any errors to be displayed, so I assumed everything was ok.
    That's fair enough.
One thing I think might cause this behaviour is that the backup on the primary database is incremental,
Yes...that may be an issue.  Best bet is to re-run your standby creation.....as you are doing.
With version 11gR2 you also have the option of duplicate from active database which negates the need to copy your backupsets over to do the restore:  I find it a much simpler process than the rman backup, copy files over, restore and then recover process.

    Something worth considering.

    Hi,
<i>How to know which master data objects need to activated from delivery version to active version in R/3 for a particular standard cube like 0SD_C03.</i>
I think, you are looking for master data sources(text, attributes, hier).Am i right?
If so, This cube has almost all SD master data characterstics. So you can activate all the all master data datasources of SD in r/3 (SD-IO).
Any way you requirement does not stop only by using this cube . You will activate all other cubes in SD also. So if you want to activate only needed master data datasources when you are activating a cube, the job becomes senseless. There is no problem(wrong) in activating all master data available under that application , even though you want to activate only one cube.

My archivelog files are not deleted on standby.
I have set the CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default on the Primary server.
I've checked the archivelogs with the FRA and they are not beign deleted on the STANDBY. Do I have to do something for the configuation to take effect? Like run a RMAN backup?
I've done a lot ofresearch and i'm getting mixed answers. Please help. Thanks in advanced.

Setting the Policy will not delete the Archive logs on the Standby. ( I found a thread where the Data Guard product manager says "The deletion policy on both sides will do what you want" ). However I still
like to clean them off with RMAN.
I would use RMAN to delete them so that it can use that Policy are you are protected in case of Gap, transport issue etc.
There are many ways to do this. You can simply run RMAN and have it clean out the Archive.
    Example :
    #!/bin/bash
    # Name: db_rman_arch_standby.sh
    # Purpose: Database rman backup
    # Usage : db_rman_arch_standby <DBNAME>
    if [ "$1" ]
    then DBNAME=$1
    else
    echo "basename $0 : Syntax error : use . db_rman_full <DBNAME> "
    exit 1
    fi
    . /u01/app/oracle/dba_tool/env/${DBNAME}.env
    echo ${DBNAME}
    MAILHEADER="Archive_cleanup_on_STANDBY_${DBNAME}"
    echo "Starting RMAN..."
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / catalog <user>/<password>@<catalog> << EOF
    delete noprompt ARCHIVELOG UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-8';
    exit
    EOF
    echo `date`
    echo
echo 'End of archive cleanup on STANDBY'
    mailx -s ${MAILHEADER} $MAILTO < /tmp/rmandbarchstandby.out
    # End of ScriptThis uses ( calls an ENV) so the crontab has an environment.
    Example ( STANDBY.env )

  • How to set no archive log in MS SQL

    Dear Gurus,
I'll already did the support package upgrade and need to run the SGEN.But before that I'll need to set the archive log in MS SQL 2005 database.
Kindly please help me,how to set "no archive log " in MS SQL .Then I can run the SGEN.After that how to revert back to "enable archive log mode".
All the posting told about the archive log with Oracle.
    Thanks
    /Shah

    Hi Shah,
In MS SQL Server, Transaction log is used to write log files.
For eg., Intially if you allocate 10GB to the Tr.Log and can set the limit based on your requirement, say as 11GB. It means it wont grow beyond the point 11GB.
If you take a transactional log backup, the data present in the 10GB file is freed up, but the size of the file would remain same.
This can be truncated by shrinking the log file.
    1. Open SQL Mgmt studio.
    2. Right click on the DB(SID)> Tasks>Shrink-->Files.
    3. Choose "Log" in the file type and "Log File Name" in the Filename column.
    4. Shrink Action should be "Release Unused Space"
    5. Then Click Ok. The unused space will be released.
The Transaction log can be switched off by changing the Recovery Model to "SIMPLE"
    1. Click on the DB(SID)
    2. Properties>Options>Recovery Model.
    3. If the recovery model is set to Simple, the Transaction log wont be written.
Hope this would help you. Revert for any other clarification.
    Regards,
    Kamesh

  • How to determine which chipset my Satellite L300/700 has?

I have a SATELLITE L300/700 (PSLB8A-047004). The User Guide covers several models. It indicates that the chipset determines which memory modules I need for a memory upgrade. How do I find out which chipset I have, please?
    Kev.

    > I'm still curious about how to determine which chipset I have - any thoughts?
Go to the device manger and click on IDE Ata/Atapi controllers:

There you will see your chipset installed on your laptop. In my case, as shown on the screenshot is Intel ICH9m

  • How the Payload Message and Logs are stored in the B1i Database Table: BZSTDOC

I would appreciate it if someone could provide any documentation regarding B1i database further maintenance.
    for example:
I want to know how the payload message and logs are stored in the table BZSTDOC, and how can we retrieve the payload message directly from the column DOCDATA.
As described in the B1iSNGuide05 3.2 LogGarbageCollection:
to avoid the overload of the B1i Database, I set the Backup Buffer to 90 days : so this means Message Logs from the last 90 days will always be available, but is there some way we can save those old messages to a disk so that I can retrieve the payload message anytime?
in addition, let’s assume the worst, the B1iSN server or the B1i database damaged, Can we just simply restore the B1i database from a latest backup DB then it can work automatically after the B1iSN server is up and running again?

    Dear SAP,
Two weeks passed, I still haven't received any feedback from you guys.
Could you please have a look at my question?
How is this Question going? Is it Untouched/Solving/Reassigned ?

  • How to disable the archive logs in SAP IDES(Windows) using SQL Server

can any body tell us How to disable the archive logs in SAP IDES(Windows 2003) using SQL Server 2000.SP4.?

    Hi,
Unfortunately, SQL Server does not have the option to turn off transaction logging. You can set the recovery mode to SIMPLE, instead of FULL. This will result in the transaction log being truncated on checkpoint.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873235 - check this microsoft article
This will help in reduction of the size of the transcation log.
