How to dial-up my ISP

I have a USrobotics 33.6 connected to my Comm port 2.
I would like to use it to call my ISP and configure my Netscape Communicator.
I come from the Windows world and I tend to measure everything in terms of windows...So pardon me if I ask how to setup my dial-up connection in Unix. I tried to use the Admintool and there are two ports, a & b. I figured it's b so I tried to modify b from terminal to modem, but that's about it. I don't know where to go from there.
Now what? How do I call my ISP and test whether the modem is actually working?
Please help?
Thanks in advance.
Yousef

I have follow your instruction to connect to my ISP as it shows the following message:
Serial connection established.
using interface sppp0
connect: sppp0 <--> /dev/ttya
local IP address xxxxxxxx
remote IP address 1.1.1.1
But when I ping www.sun.com, it shows:
www.sun.com unknown.
I start Mozilla and it said www.sun.com not found etc...
What has gone wrong?
Do I have to configure some files such as:
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/hosts
/etc/hostname ?
or any other steps that can help me to connect to the internet?
Thanks...

  • Can't Get Airport Extreme To Dial-Up To ISP

Just bought 2 of the UFO style Airport Extremes. I set both of them up, one at my house and one at my girlfriend's. Used her iBook to set them up and went through the Setup utility and all seemed fine except when I tried to set up the APX to dial up to the ISP I can't get into the Airport Admin Utility. The setup guide tells me to use the Admin Utility to configure the dialing with the ISP's phone number, my username, password, etc., but when I open Admin Utility, it doesn't recognize the network and none of the blocks are activated so I can't enter any info. I also tried it with my friend's PC laptop and got the same thing. Both computers recognize the network but I can't connect to the ISP because I only have a dial-up connection and without getting into Admin Utility I can't configure the APX to dial up. Any ideas?

Duane, thanks for the response and sorry for my delay replying - I was out of town for several days. Your advice was right on. I did a hard reset and then set up the AirPort with an ethernet cable to my computer and was able to configure it correctly. Am a little miffed at Apple on this one as the manual was confusing. It says that the dial-up modem in the AirPort can be configured in AirPort Setup or Admin Utility but I didn't find that to be the case. Nothing in AP Setup allows input of the ISP's phone number and my username and password for the account. It has be to done in Admin Utility. Second problem was that my girlfriend's computer had taken a voltage spike during a storm a few nights earlier and I found out while configuring the AP that not only had the spike blown her internal modem but also did something to the wireless capability on her computer because it often wouldn't find the connection or it would lose it, even when the base station was only a couple of feet away. Thank again for your help.

I am new at this also, so I don't know if this helps... It is based on what I had experienced with...
There should be a "webapps" directory in any tomcat installation, I don't think it matters if it is a Linux server or NT server or a local box.
We put the WAR file inside the webapps directory, and I believed we had to restart the Tomcat service for tomcat to "recognize" the change and then automatically "expand" the war file. Accessing it from the Web will not cause the WAR file to expand... I think :D I don't think your "web hosting" company would have given you "admin" right to restart tomcat unless he/she is a good friend of yours; so you might have to ask them to do it for you... I know it sounds stupid, but I also think that tomcat need to connect with another server such as Apache, so Apache need to be running also (or some Web server that can deal connect to Tomcat); do you know what web server is running on this web hosting? I would assume Apache, but I am always paranoid about these things:D
Anyway, that's as much as I know about the subject...

  • Need help on dial backup with ISP

I've been googling around a couple hours and can't find a simple configuration for dial backup to an Internet Service Provider.
So far, what I've been able to find is direct dialing to routers and dial backup using ISDN.
All I need is for a router to dial. The ISP uses PAP/CHAP authentication and dynamically assigns IP addresses to dialup accounts.
I have an 1841 router with a T1 line on S0/0/0. I want it to fail over to the modem on the AUX port and use that as the new default gateway for all traffic.
    Any help is appreciated.

I think you can use Dial on Demand Routing (DDR) as described here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk133/tsd_technology_support_protocol_home.html
and this particular guide as well:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Internetwork_Design_Guide_--_Designing_DDR_Internetworks#Dial_Backup_for_Leased_Lines
Basically your dial connection will not be active until certain traffic will pass through.
Now, to pass traffic only when primary is down, you can define a static floating route as explained above, which is a route with a higher admin distance than the default one, so if the normal route is up, nothing will pass to the dialer, if it's down, the route to the dialer will be used.
To detect that primary route is down, either use dynamic routing or route tracking as suggested.
    I hope that helps.

    bastien.

  • How to dial automatically internet connection in firefox browser at browser startup as in internet explorer

i have ADSL modem broadband connection in which i have to connect to internet by establishing a connection by using following steps
control panel>network connection>create a new connection>connect to internet>set up my connection manually >connect using dial up modem OR connect using a braodband connection in which username and password required
creating this connection i have to provide username and password provided by ISP.
i have to dial internet connection manually after modem set local area connection automatically
i found a solution for internet explorer and by changing setting internet explorer start automatically dialling internet connection as i start the internet explorer.
is their in mozilla firefox an option to automatically dial internet connection as i open firefox browser?
and is their is any solution for as i start my computer internet connections established automatically without opening any browser , if such solution is available ,please tell about it.

The setting you set in IE also affects Firefox. For example, if you set the following, then when Firefox makes a connection request to Windows, Windows is supposed to dial the connection:
Windows Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections or <br>
Internet Explorer Tools menu > Internet Options > Connections
"Dial whenever a network connection is not present"

  • How to configure for two ISPs?

I have two ISPs, both on dialup. On my previous computer I had both showing in Internet Connect so it was simple to choose. Setting up the new one, I have set up two "Locations" but now I only see one at a time in Internet Connect. To change I have to use System Prefs to select the other at which point it will show up in Internet Connect.
Is there any information on how to set this up properly so that both ISPs appear in Internet Connect?
    Pete

I can't give any information about setting it up in Internet Connect (it is no longer on 10.5, but I see you have 10.4), but with the two locations a far simpler (and faster) way to switch is to use the Location menu item in the Apple menu (top left of your screen).
I have my computer set up with four locations and switch as needed without ever touching the preferences panels.
With two locations Internet connect would only display the one relevant to the location you are using at any particular time.

  • How to dial phone # from calendar

I am very frustrated that I can't seem to dial a phone number I entered as an event in my calendar with just a tap. Yet, lo and behold, I go onto the Apple site and I see this:
"Using Multi-Touch on iPhone makes the Calendar application intuitive and simple to use. Tap to create and send out meeting invites, accept or decline a meeting invitation, or dial a phone number from meeting notes."
What does this mean? Where? I regularly set up the phone numbers of people I need to call in Calendar and, so far, I can do this on any phone but can't figure out how to do this from the iPhone. Is this feature only available in "meeting notes?" Where is that? Is it visible on your calendar? If it isn't, who cares?

Yes, only in the Notes. Meaning, if you or whoever organized the meeting enters a phone number in the Notes field, you can tap the number to dial it. The field is only present if notes were entered - for example, you can enter notes when creating a new event on the iPhone; for Outlook invitations sent via Exchange, text entered into the 'body' of the calendar event are Notes. It +does not+ work for numbers entered the location field (which is how most of my invites are, unfortunately).
You can submit feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.

  • How to dial telephone numbers which have letters instead of digits?

I'm new to Blackberry products & just bought a 8330 curve.  Unlike my other smartphones which had the option of a dial key pad, the Curve appears to have forgotten to include one.  When a telephone number is spelled out with letters instead of digits, how do I dial it?  For example: for my pharmacy refills I would dial 1-123-345-DRUG  or when calling a company after hours and reach its automated answer system which prompts you to key-in the party that you are looking for their last 4 letters of their name.  How do you do it.  Help.

Hi and welcome to the forums!
You can enter the alpha chacratars using the alt shift for nummerics.
    For example: 1-800-(alt-shift) -IFlYSWA
The same applys when you are asked for alpha characters as in your example
    of search by person's name.

  • How can I force an ISP to refresh a file in proxy server cache?

    Hi all,
In my applet I am getting a remote file. But with some ISP's I have the problem that when I try to get that file again I get the older version which they had in their proxy servers cache.
Is it possible for me to enforce refresh on this ISP's proxy server with some code in the applet or in the web page or in any other way?
    If yes, how?
I would appreciate your answers very much, because I am in an urgent and desperate situation.
    Thanks and bye.

    If you are using URLConnection
myURLConnection.setRequestProperty("pragma:","no-cache"Actually, the 'pragma' header is an HTP 1.0 (old) concept. The one for HTTP 1.1 is 'Cache-Control'. That said, you should always use both to support old/new browsers.
You could also use the following headers :
    Expires, must-revalidate, proxy-revalidate etc...
You could also implement a getLastModified() method in your servlet, which returns the time (as a long) at which the content was last changed. The server could then intercept 'If-Modified-Since' requests.
Keep in mind that, because of several notorious browser bugs ( http://www.web-caching.com/browserbugs.html ), it can be difficult to effectively turn off caching across the board.

  • EXCH2013: How to leave messages at ISP server?

Using Exchange 2013 SP1 and it serves both roles. It is not in deployment yet as we are still testing. Currently we have a problem trying to receive mail (have not been able to since testing started) and we got to thinking we need a contingency plan should
Exchange stop receiving mail for a period of time so that users could go to the ISP's webmail interface to see their mail. Plus, once we get the receive working we still want to have this "backup" to compare to for some period of time.
We use SMTP to send and receive mail using the  default connectors. Is there a setting to allow messages to remain at our ISP's server after they are brought into the mailboxes?
Or is this controlled at the ISP?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
For the ISP server, I suggest contact your ISP Support to double confirm whether this goal can be achieved.
According to your description, I notice that you are suffering "Can't Receive" issue with the new Exchange server 2013 SP1. Please correct me if I have anything misunderstand.
    Suggestions:
    1. How is the impact, can't receive internally/externally or both? All external domains or some specific domains?
    2. Please make sure the DNS can be solved.
    3. Please make sure Port 25 is available.
    4. Please double confirm the Receive Connector settings. More details to refer:
    Receive Connectors
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996395(v=exchg.150).aspx
    5. Please check whether the external senders get NDRs, and any related Error/Warning/Information messages in App Log. If yes, please paste the details without sensitive information for the further troubleshooting.
    6. Also suggest try to open a new thread on "Can't receive" issue, so that you can get more targeted suggestions.

  • CISCO Projectsquare / spark, how to dial VCS

How do you use the new alternative Sparks to dial in to an sx20 of Expressway Server
I normally would use jabber movi to dial [email protected]
I am not seeing the option in spark to do so.

This is, as far as I know, not possible at this stage. Spark now has its own support forum which you can find here: https://communities.cisco.com/community/technology/collaboration/cisco_spark

YOu will need some phone dialing software which you would interface to Forms vis ORA_FFI or using the Java Importer. The ability to dial a phone is not native to Forms.

  • How to dial a 086 number

Can you dial a 086 number using Skype? If so, how?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
When making a call with Skype, you just have to ensure that you dial the number using the international format, even for local calls.
The format should be as follows:
“+” “country code” “area code” “phone number”
So a corresponding Washington DC number in the US would be:
    “+” “1” “202” “1234567” = +12021234567
Remember, you will need a little Skype Credit or a subscription to make calls to mobiles and landlines. You can find out more and purchase some at the following address: http://www.skype.com/go/skypeout
To answer your question, when you say "086" are you referring to one of the South Africa's Special services numbers? If so, yes, you should be able to use Skype to call this number. Just dial the number according to the format mentioned above.
    Thank you.

  • N93 and Dial Up to ISP

I have just purchased a N93 after having a 9500 and I do not see any way to make a data call using my dial up to a ISP. With the 9500 I could do this when outside GPRS range . Is there anyway to do this with a N93? Thanks!

Unfortunatley, this hasn't been possible for a few years now. Due to the more popular methods of connecting to the internet, such as HSDPA 3G, 3G, & GPRS.
The only method you can use is a "Dial Up" connection to 3G or GPRS
    Cheers
