How to export photos AND settings into a new iPhoto library

Hello,
My iPhoto library is becoming humongeous (slow, risk of corrupting the file etc), hence I'd like to split it into various libraries (which I can manage with the very useful iPhoto Library Manager (shareware)).
How can I export not only the photos themselves, but their settings (metadata), i.e. Albums and Events, perhaps even slideshows.
Any ideas/pointers/suggestions are most welcome.
Cheers,
Veit (from Austria)

Here is what I found in the iPhoto Library Manger's Help section: indeed the "elegant way" to copy pix AND their metadata. Many thanks for being so helpful.
Cheers,
Veit
Copying Albums
When keeping your photos separated in multiple libraries, you sometimes have the need to move a set of photos from one library to another. With iPhoto, the only way to do this is to export the photos from one library and then import them into another. However, in the process of doing this, you lose all the data you've worked to assign to your photos, such as titles, dates, keywords, and ratings. iPhoto Library Manager provides a way to copy photos from one library to another without losing this valuable information.
An album of photos can be copied from one library to another by dragging the album(s) you want to copy from the albums list in the main iPhoto Library Manager window and dropping them onto the library you would like to copy them to. iPhoto Library Manager will first collect the information about those photos from the source library, and then import those photos into the destination library and restore all the photo information as it was before. If a photo has been modified in the original library, then the original version of the photo will also be transferred to the destination library, so that the "Revert to original" command in iPhoto will work as expected. If you drag more than one album at once, and a photo belongs to more than one of those albums, the photo will only be imported once, but will be added to all the appropriate newly created albums in the destination library.
Some notes on what will and won't be copied when copying albums between libraries: [and so on ...]

  • How can I drag multiple photos into a new iPhoto library from search box?

I lost but found my list of photos that were in my iPhoto library. I am unable to drag more than one photo at a time from the search box into the new iPhoto library box. Am I doing something wrong or do I have to drag one at a time? (That would take hours.) Please help if you can!
    Thanks,
    Laure

    Roam,
Thanks again. I know how to highlight and drag multiple photos or a list of files, but the only place I found my list was by going to Finder>File>Find then a dialogue box comes up. In the dialogue box I put in iPhoto and checked that then put in "kind" "is" "image" and "size" "is greater than" "30" KB. When I click search, the entire list from my library comes up but that is when I am unable to drag more than one file at a time. The box that comes up when I search isn't (at least I don't think it is) a "folder" as such. Any suggesttions?

  • Import full events into a new iPhoto library

I want to divide my iPhoto library into two: one personal, one work.  In creating the new iPhoto library, I exported the events I wanted and imported them into the new library.  Much to my surprise, they were all imported into one event.  I did split the events by the dates but would prefer not to go through and have to reorganize and rename each event.  I have 4,000+ photos here so I want to make this easy.
Is it possible to import multiple, separate events, with their current names into my new iPhoto library?

  • How to Export photos and videos from Mac to iPhone?

    Hi everyone,
I was trying to export a video from my Macbook Pro (Mid 2014) running latest version of OS X to my iPhone 5 (running iOS 8). I have tried everything in iTunes and iPhotos to be able to export Photos and videos to 'Photos' icon in my iPhone, but haven't got success so far. It's easy to do in a windows computer just copy and paste but I don't know how to do it in a Mac...
Could anyone here help me with that??
    Thanks

running latest version of OS X
Is that MacOS X 10.9.5, or have you upgraded to a Beta version?
I have tried everything in iTunes and iPhotos to be able to export Photos and videos to 'Photos' icon in my iPhone, but haven't got success so far.
What are your settings on your iPhone for iCloud?  Have you enabled iCloud Drive and iCloud Photo Library?
Then you are out of luck. With these settings, syncing of photos with your iPhone is disabled, so you can no longer sync with iTunes.
And the Photo Stream is behaving buggy and will not sync from your Mac to the iPhone.
Try, if disabling these settings and restarting the iPhone will help.
Otherwise, mail the photos or put them into Dropbox, until you can upgrade to Yosemite and iCloud Photo Library on your Mac.

  • Can I 'copy' albums, or photos, into a new iPhoto library??

I am doing an iPhoto library rebuild after my iPhoto editing tool stopped working.  A quick test of a new library has solved this issue, but the rebuild of the original library is taking ages and I'm concerned this will not work. So far it's been nearly 25 minutes.
    iPhoto quickly generated this message:
    Rebuilding Library: 1974 versions restored
But it continues to 'work'.  I don't have too many photos yet, but am traveling in Gautemala and so am looking for the quickest and easiest way to get my old library photos into the new, working one.  It won't take me very long to re-create albums or anything, so this I am unconcerned about.  I simply wish to get the photos from my original library, including the ones I edited/cropped/enhanced, into my new one that has a functioning editing tool....
Is there any way to do this simply?  Can I just copy the pictures into the new library?  I've read/heard that 'importing' will not work.  If importing simply destroys the organization of the library, I don't mind.  At this point, I simply want my photos as they are now...
    Cheers!  Thanks in advance...

    Thanks for your response...
In other words, by 'changes', you mean none of my editing will be brought over??  If I want to re-crop images, etc, I will have to do so?
Also...I'm fairly new to Mac.  What exactly do you mean by restoring my backup to see if that fixed my editing problems?  Unless there is some application that automatically backs up everything in my library somewhere, I actually have been unable to back anything up yet (another issue, another story, you can see my other posts today!).
    Thanks again in advance....

  • How to export ranking and keywords from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
I like to edit RAWs in Aperture but still want to keep iPhoto for JPGs, sharing and slidshows... However, I cannot get the keywords and rankings from Aperture into iPhoto. The JPGs have other Metadata attached to them, but not the ones that matter the most here - ranking and keywords. Subtitles for example are also missing in the exported picture.
I tried various ways of exporting/importing the pictures (of course "including metadata"), but did not yet succeed. I did expect these two applications to get along more smoothly, however there must be a way to do this, right? Please let me know!

    Redgo,
I can't answer your specific question, but I too like to use iPhoto for slideshows.
I don't do this by sharing the libraries or having duplicate copies. In Aperture, I make an album with the pictures for my slideshow. Then in iPhoto, I grab that album from Aperture and make an iPhoto slideshow from that. It uses the previews, but medium-res previews are fine for a slideshow. It wouldn't be so good for printing (but I imagine you'd use Aperture to do that).
Just my 2 cents about an alternate workflow.

  • How to compress .m2v and .aiff into a new movie

I need to compress a large library of videos (1000+ movies) into several smaller versions for the web. The source movies were created using the DVD settings from Compressor 2 and 3. Therefore, for each source movie, I have two files: .m2v for video and .aiff for the audio.
What I want to do (but what does not work): I want to drag the two corresponding .m2v- and .aiff-files of each source movie into Compressor 3, then assign three settings for the web (big, medium, small) and hit "Submit". The result would be three nice video files. (I would then try to automate that workflow.)
The problem: Compressor 3 handles the two source files (.m2v and .aiff) as two separate jobs. But I want them to be combined into one job, as a video track and it's audio track. The resulting three videos should have both video and audio, obviously. I don't want to combine video and audio using QuickTime Pro for each of the three resulting videos, if I can avoid it.
Has anyone ever tried this? Any suggestions?
(My english is not very good, I'm from Germany.)

Unfortunately, you'll need to use QuickTime Pro.
    Compressor doesn't combine streams.

  • Import photo's from camera has destroyed iPhoto library

I upgraded to iPhoto '08 a couple of days ago, and everything worked fine. But, after importing a few photo's from a Nikon point and shoot just now, it appears that I've lost all the other photo's in the library. The photo's that I just imported are now the only ones in the library. Thousands of images have just vanished.
I've checked in the iPhoto Library package and it looks ilke the files are still on disk. I've also tried rebuilding the library and fixing permissions. No luck.
I don't have a recent backup of the iPhoto Library, and I'm not willing to lose several months worth of photo's to go back to an old backup. So what are my options?
I've copied the iPhoto Library to another location and I can create a new library and import everything from the old Originals folder, but what happens to all of the edits I made to these photo's. As far as I can tell they're stored in the Modified folder. Does this mean that I either have to import Orignials and lose the edits, or import the Modified folder and lose the ability to go back to the originals?
This really *****. You would think something as simple as this would have been caught in QA. How did this software ever get to market with a bug like this in it? I'll be able to get my photo's back, although not without a considerable amount of hassle, but what about the thousands of folks out there with their family albums in iPhoto who are about to lose everything as soon as they connect a camera to their Mac. I doubt they'll be thinkging very highly of Apple, that's for sure.

I just did a bit of investigating and things are getting very weird.
iPhoto '08 didn't crash when I did the import, howere I did notice something odd. I store my photographs on an external hard drive and alias to the iPhoto Library from the Pictures folder. After I imported the recent photo's I noticed that my external hard drive was mounted twice in the finder. I unmounted it thinking that it was just an anomoly.
The external drive is called Galaxy1TB. To check to see whether there were multiple libraries on my Mac I did a search in Spotlight for "iPhoto Library." Two showed up, the backup I just made and one located in /Volumes/Galaxy1TB 1/Pictures. Note the fact that it's called "Galaxy1TB 1" and not "Galaxy1TB" even though it shows up in Finder as Galaxy1TB.
Using Terminal I did a cd of /Volumes and it contains Galaxy1TB and Galaxy1TB 1. Galaxy1TB 1 is the volume that is visible through Finder, and it has the iPhoto Library containing all of my old photo's. But, I checked this library, by looking through the package in Finder, and it does not contain the most recent photo import I did from the Nikon point and shoot camera. When I cd into /Volumes/Galaxy1TB there is a single directory called Pictures and it contains another directory called iPhoto Library. Navigating through the various directories in this version of the iPhoto Library I came across the recent Nikon imports.
It seems to me that, when I did the import from the Nikon, iPhoto, which was not started at the time, mounted a new Volume called Galaxy1TB (somehow the existing Volume was renamed Galaxy1TB 1) and it created a new iPhoto Library on the volume and imported the images into it. Now, when I start iPhoto, it is using this doppelganger iPhoto Library rather than the original one.
I suspect that if I restart the Mac, Galaxy1TB will revert to its original state and iPhoto will pick up the correct library. But I don't know what will happen to the library on the currently mounted Galaxy1TB. If it vanishes I will lose the photo's I just imported. I guess there is a possibility that the doppelganger Galaxy1TB will be mounted and I'll lose everything on my external hard drive! I wonder whether it's safe to rm /Volumes/Galaxy11TB through Terminal before restarting the Mac?
Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated. This thing has got me very confused. I'm going to export the photo's I recently imported, so that I'll have copies when (if?) the library goes away after a restart. But if anyone can give me some assurance that I'm not going to lose the contents of my external drive after I restart, I'd appreciate it.

  • I started with a brand new iPhoto Library and I still can't get it to work.

I have almost 40,000 photos and iPhoto simply stopped working altogether. You can read all about my trials and tribulations here: http://www.davidgagne.net/2014/01/02/dealing-with-my-iphoto-library/
Eventually I simply resigned myself to not being able to use iPhoto and started using a program called Lyn. (http://www.lynapp.com/index.html)
The only problems are that now there is no way to synch photos with my iPhone and now I have no way to use iCloud.
So I decided to create a brand new iPhoto library on my laptop and use it *only* for (a) dealing with iCloud and (b) managing the (copies of) photos I want to synch to my iPhone.
I opened iPhoto and created a brand new iPhoto library. This new library is completely empty.
As soon as I connected my iCloud account, iPhoto started using 250% of my MacBook Air processor, 99.9% of its RAM, and absolutely punishing the laptop fan. My entire computer basically becomes unusable; and remember -- this is a completely empty library.
Also fun: iPhoto was downloading every photo from my iCloud account to my laptop.
Am I the only one suffering like this?
Does anyone have an alternate way to synch photos between iPhone and computer?

Does Lyn put the image files in a special package or just accesses them in their folders on the hard drive?
You can sync photos to your iPhone using iTunes.  Put copies of the photos you want on the iPhone in a folder on the hard drive and select it in iTunes to sync with the phone.
The screenshot shows syncing from a folder named NanoPics.

  • How to Import/Export Photos AND revisions

I have Lightroom 1.3.1 installed on my home machine, and that's where I process my RAW photos. I've recently installed Lightroom on a machine at work, and would like to occasionally export pictures from a specific folder on my home machine to my machine at work. In addition to importing my photos, I would also like to retain all of the revisions I've made to them (cropping, WB adjustment, color adjustment, etc.). I don't think that I need to import the ENTIRE catalog, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I just want the ability to move photos and settings on a per folder basis at this time.
With that said, can someone please provide me with step-by-step instructions on how I should export all photos AND catalog settings from a single folder? I recently tried to do this, and while I was able to bring the photos into my work machine, the revisions were not recognized on my work machine. My picture rotations, crops, WB and color adjustments were all lost, even though I exported (and tried to import) the catalog.
Thanks for any help you can provide me.

How can I export photos from APERTURE with a new sequence and ignore the embedded JPEG number? Have tried renumbering to no avail.
    has anyone resolved this issue?
This is now the second big Problem with using Apple's Appeture with NO apparent FIX...
Aperture has NO DIRECT way to Burn to a CD/DVD & apparently NO way to RE-SEQUENCE the numbering system????
ANYONE... I wish APPLE would address/fix these 2 problems... LIGHTROOM I guess is next?

    Hi David,
Coming in and whining loudly is rude.  We are all volunteers here, voluntarily sharing our expertise so that users like you can make the most of their time with Aperture.  Speaking just for myself:  although I do care about your success with software (it's why I'm here), I don't care what software you use.  If you want to use Lightroom, do so, and post your questions in an appropriate forum.
Burning files to a CD is a file operation done at the system level (it is built into OS X).  Aperture lets your create sharable image-format files from your Images.  You then use OS X's tools to burn those files to a CD.  Iirc, you can set up a "Burn Folder" in Finder, into which you can export files created from your Images, and with a single click burn your CD.
Naming the files you create by exporting your Images can be tricky.  There are _many_ possibilities.  Some things can't be done.  Sequencing can be done in a number of ways (see Léonie's answer above).  What have you tried?  What was the result?  In what way did this differ from what you expected?

How do you export photos and movies from iPhoto to your iPhone?  I synced the devices and noticed that some photos and movies on my laptop iPhoto were not transferred to my iPhone?

I am not sure, which answer you found - so just in case:
If you sync your iPhone with the iPhoto library, the photos will only stay on the iPhone until the next sync and they are not in the Camera Roll. If you transfer using the Photo Stream, they will only be vidsible in the stream, until they are replaced in iCloud by newer content.
So, if you want to transfer the photos permanently, save them to the Camera Roll.
