How to export the original raw file?

I have read a few threads about this but have not seen the answer.
The original file from my camera (.PEF) now exists only in the Aperature library. I want to export a copy to my desktop so I can do some special processing with Pentax software. How do I export the original .PEF file? (Exporting Masters only gives me processed file types like TIFF and JPEG.)

Export Version gives you a processed file such as a TIFF or JPEG.
Export Master will give you a copy of the original RAW file.
Please double-check that you used the correct export command...

How to find the original RAW file # from a Lightroom exported JPG?

Hello, this is in regards to a Lightroom 3.5 exported JPG. This was a year ago when I had been told it was best to export files with simple renumbering of them from 1 to x... instead of retaining the original RAW 4-digit file name.
I've currently lost the original files, and need to do a search for them via these 4 digits to see if I have them tucked away in any of my drives. I downloaded a metadata explorer, and it's telling me all the lightroom editing information, and everything else, but somehow does not have the simplest of information — that 4 digit original file name.
Am I grasping at straws or is there likely to be any way to find this information out? I don't work with metadata, so there wouldn't have been any customizations to how Lightroom configures this....hoping that's in my favor. Any help is much appreciated!!!!

(4 groups of up-to-3 digits separated by dots is the format for a literal internet (IP) address, instead of domain-name...)
Summary: if you learn the anatomy of a URL, and pay attention to the URL's you are clicking on, or entering directly, you can take more responsibility for security, and assure (to a greater extent) you don't download from an unfriendly source.

Looking for answers on XMP files - where should they be stored as sidecar files? With the original raw file or in a separate folder?
Relatively new user of Adobe LR5 and PS CC, about a year old.
If they should be stored somewhere beside the folder that contains the originals, where and how to change the settings?
If I choose to write metadata to the original files, is that sidecar files or does the XMP file show separately?
To be honest, I usually find a video and I cannot figure this out. I have never received an answer on any of my questions by the way.

if you have a backup of your catalog you can do the following:
1. Backup your catalog first
2. Restore your backup catalog to some location
3. Open your current catalog and select "files->import from another catalog".
4. Select your backup catalog and your lost images. LR ask you if you want to overwrite the current settings or save them as a virtual copy.
As an alternativ you can open your backup catalog, select the "lost" images and save the development settings as xmp sidecar fiels (using ctrl-s). Then open your current catalog, seletct the images and use "Metadata->Read Metadata from files".

after launching the application I can fread resources from "/resources/images/myimage", but I Cant read the from the manifest file.

How can I REPLACE original RAW files with JPG's and keep my 'Develop mode' edits?

'edits' = Edits made in develop mode.
'CR2' = My RAW image file format.
I have existing CR2's with edits for them saved in Lightroom.
I want to replace the CR2's with JPG's, and do nothing else. I want those JPG's to inherit the CR2's edits, but I DO NOT want the edits to be permanently applied to the image.
If I export the CR2's (which have edits) to JPG's, the edits will be permanently applied to them. I do not want this.
If I export the CR2's to JPG's without the edits, I have no way of getting the edits back and will have to redo the work if I use that photo again.
Any solutions? I've been trying for a while and have no idea how to do this.
Q: Why not keep the CR2's?
A: I am uploading these files to an online host (S3) as my primary storage method and uploading CR2's takes way too long with my internet speeds. Furthermore, online storage costs money.
Q: Why not shoot with JPGs instead of shooting raw?
A: I do my initial edits with the raw files and then archive them as JPG's to save storage space. They won't be raw anymore if I apply future edits, but I still have the option of retouching them from the 'original' state and still have my old edits preserved.

Probably the best thing for you to do is simply use lossy DNG format (e.g. export as, or convert to..): raw data is re-formatted with jpeg compression (full-rez or reduced-rez), but all raw settings apply.
If you insist on trying to have a true jpeg file with (mostly) raw settings, then:
The simplest way I can think of to do it without a script or plugin:
* Reset the raw photo (consider preserving things that don't translate well, like profile-based lens corrections and white balance).
* Export jpeg
* Un-reset the image (e.g. using edit history or pre-reset snapshot).
* Sync settings from raw to jpeg (note: omit settings that don't transfer well, or that were not reset..).
* Optionally: Delete raw
To automate/streamline would require a script or plugin.

How to export the best quality file from FCE?

Hi people. I was wondering which is the option that I have to choose to get the best quality on an exported file from FCE4. The best quality I get is from the "Export - Quicktime movie..." option, but there is a huge compression as I see. The final product isn't as good as it should. Obviously, it won't be the same as the original material, but I was wondering if there was another way of getting a movie with much more quality, like when you use "Compressor" from the Final Cut Studio. I imported the material through firewire (it was recorded on a miniDV tape). I respected the format of the source and the files I got are top notch. The final movie looks great on the computer, the differences come when burning it to a DVD. I'm using IDVD, and the .mov file exported through the option I mentioned.
I want to burn that .mov file to a DVD, which means there will be another compression to MPEG2 once I burn it through the DVD authoring app, but the product has some kind of "shaking" in the dark areas. It's not so bad, but I would like to get the best quality, like the ones I've got from Compressor. Is it possible using the Export - Quicktime movie option?

How do I convert multiple RAW files to JPEG with the same settings?

I have a considerable number (800) RAW files to convert to JPEGs. I am happy to convert them in batches requiring similar settings to save time whilst of course, leaving the original RAW files to make more individual adjustments if required later.
I thought there was a way of doing this in small batches to save time but can't recall how to do it.
Can anyone help?

What I didn't mention is that I'm using PSE 5 with ACR 4.6, if its relevant. I'm thinking of updating to the next version when its out in the hope that it will run with Windows 7 64 bit or I may go to Lightroom.
I can now see that I can batch convert a whole folder of files using "process multiple files" as dj_paige suggested but that is too many at once as the settings I choose won't be relevant for all the pics in the folder.
I was hoping to batch convert say 5 or 6 similar photos at a time with the same settings. I'm not quite clear what you're suggesting but I'm hoping that its a "work round" using two stages to achieve this.
I can't see a list of open files within ACR to ensure that they are all selected as you suggest.
What does clicking Open rather than Done mean? Does this amend the original RAW file to the settings selected so that if I then "process multiple files" on the whole folder to convert from RAW to JPEG they will in fact have already been processed in smaller groups so I can convert without applying any further changes?
If so, what settings should I apply to "process multiple files" to ensure a simple conversion of file type rather than any further adjustments?
Any further help on this would be much appreciated.

Aperture exports jpeg files larger than original RAW files

Can anyone tell me why a RAW file (10.6mb), when exported as a jpeg (10.8mb) from Aperture ends up larger than the original RAW file. The same RAW file when opened and then saved as a jpeg (6.4mb) in Photoshop is a lot smaller. The photo dimensions and resolution are the same in both saved files (34.5mb open file 300dpi 4256 x 2831 pix). I have tried this on several photos, all with similar results. For information I am saving the photos in both Photoshop and Aperture at 300dpi, original size and at a quality setting of 12. In these examples/tests I have done no work to the photos, obviously the file sizes increase after work has been carried out on the photos (in both Ps & Aperture)
Almost doubling the size of saved jpegs has a massive implication on my library and may be one reason to consider Adobe Lightroom as this gives similar jpeg file sizes as Photoshop, i.e. almost half the size of the original RAW file
Reducing the quality setting on saved jpegs is an obvious way to reduce file size, but not answering the question of the considerable discrepancy when saving to the same quality in different software
Is this a feature of Aperture and nothing can be done about it ? I would prefer to use Aperture but cannot cope with the large jpeg sizes !

Think you might be right Allen - The 12 quality saved jpegs seem to be pretty high quality, closer to the original than maybe the files saved in Ps at quality 12. I have just run an identical set of processing actions on all the files in Photoshop and the jpegs previously saved in Aperture at 12, 11 and even 8 quality settings seem to be better than the same files saved at 12 in Ps
Bizarrely the file size drops from 10.6mb at quality setting 12 in Aperture, to 3.2mb when saved just one notch down at quality setting 11 in Aperture. That is a massive drop, esp considering the next one down, saving at quality 10 results in a 2.8mb file
rw just ran some checks and tests on the file export settings and file sizes in Aperture, on a file I sent him, and we get the same results. So at least my version of Aperture is not up the wall !!
Would be useful to have the explanations from Apple as to the vast variance in settings and file sizes, but I guess we will just have to keep guessing - and buying more and more hard drives for all the large files
I am considering keeping the RAW originals in future, and I suppose in this case I need only save smaller jpegs, and issue at whatever size they are needed at the time - just needs a bit of planning to look after an ever increasing collection, which is about to have two sets of images added at a time now. Added to the already amassed 80 000 images at last count !)

Random Original RAW files unavailable in managed library. :(

I've had an Aperture library that has traveled with me through all of the various updates (up to and include 3.4.3), but now in random projects (and most but not all photos) the original RAW file isn't available, only the preview. The problem, is that now I can't edit or even export the photos. I recently went through a whole "corrupt library" restore from a vault that I keep up to date, but now I'm going to try to rebuild the database.
Very disconcerning. Hopefully there is a simple cause and remedy someone can help me with.

Thanks for the reply! I went through all three first aid steps over the last two days (in increasing order), so first was permissions, then repair, then rebuild the database. I haven't updated the vault since I noticed this issue a few days ago, but I don't know how long it's been going on.
Also, I opened the library file by showing the package contents, and navigated to a masters file folder that I could compare to the viewer, and if you look at the screenshot below, IMG_4870.CR2 is the first RAW file in the folder. It then skips two files (IMG_4871 and IMG_4872) which both show the yellow "!" icon in the viewer, then the next raw file is IMG_4873. What this tells me, is that, in fact, the RAW files really DON't exist in the folder of that import.
Is there a way to browse the contents of the vault without restoring? I'm also thinking I might restore the library from the vault to a different drive to see if the RAW files are there. Lastly, I'm going to check my Backblaze backup to see if the RAW files are there.
For future reference, I'm going to set up a mirrored RAID drive set and do a live backup of the masters during the import.
I REALLY hope I can recover the originals from this...

Jpeg link to original raw files bridge or lightroom?

I have recently exported jpegs and given them to a librarian to add metadata. He used Bridge to add the metadata to the jpegs. Is there a simple way to give him the original raw files and they will automatically link together?
The filenames have been changed. I am hoping there is a residual filename in the metadata.

Not that I know of. And with a new name it is a new file.
There will only be old name if he did batch rename and had the box check to preserve current file name.

ACR Makes Changes to Original RAW File

I think Ive seen this explained before, but it didnt, and still doesnt make any sense to me. Whenever I open a RAW image in ACR and make changes, including saving as a jpg to another folder, all the changes are made in my RAW file. Why does ACR do this? I keep reading that ACR does not do this, but it does (seem) to do this. The fix is to open the RAW image back up in ACR after I have saved the jpg, and undo all the changes. I shouldnt have to do this, and no other software Ive used to process RAW images does this. Im Baffled.
By the way, Im new to CS3, but come from years of using Paint Shop Pro and Nikon Capture.

Okay, it looks like I need to clarify my oxymoronic statement. First of all, I need to stipulate that I use XMP files with my raw images when I use the original original raw files and not DNG files. And since this is the Camera Raw forum I was talking specifically about raw images. So in that context of how I use raw files, the raw file is not changed at all. The metadata changes are stored in the external XMP file and the original raw file remains unchanged. I might be wrong, but I have assumed that this is the way most people have their workflow established. But maybe I am wrong.
In the case of DNG files, ACR is able to write the metadata to the header of the DNG file without altering the picture data. Hopefully this will clarify my statement.
Yes, I also realize that Pentax and some other camera makers offer DNG as a native raw format. The same DNG statement that I made applies to those images as well.

Embed original RAW file in DNG?

Is there any way to set the DNG conversion in Lightroom to embed the orginal RAW file upon import (similar to how it works in the DNG converter program that is put out by Adobe)? It appears that the Lightroom DNG converter will only convert the RAW file to DNG without embedding the original...any suggestions or comments??? Thank you in advance.

Maybe I've misunderstood the question or else I'm missing something here.
I have Adobe's standalone DNG converter on my Desktop which I used to use previously, and yes, there is an option of embedding the original RAW file which I chose to use. At the end of the day this process produced on file - the dng - and buried within it was the original RAW.
I had reservations about LR's convert to dng process in the beginning but am now beginning to see the advantages of it. When I convert my RAW file to dng I now get 2 files in the original image folder - one being the ORIGINAL Raw image, the second the dng conversion. So now I have the best of two worlds, and although it takes up more HD than previous I'm beginning to like it this way. Some posts on this issue seem to imply that in the conversion to dng process the original Raw is somehow being lost and this quite simply isn't the case.

I am able to 'create a new version from original' but when I try to export the original, I only get a .jpg with the XMP file. The original is obviously there but why can't I access it please?

In Aperture 3 when I right click on an image I am able to 'create new version from original' which suggests that the original is there. When I try to export the original I only get a .jpg with the XMP file. These particular images are from 2010, has the RAW file become disconnected somehow? Sorry leonie, 'Use RAW as Original' is not an option for the image shot with the Canon.
Then your Import settings must have been different, when you imported the Canon photos.
You can check, if there is still a hidden raw file somewhere. If the image has been imported as a pair, you should see the "J" badge in Browser and Viewer, if you enable badge overlays. This indicates a pair, with the jpeg as original.
Select one of those images, and then relocate the original files "File > Relocate original" to a folder, where you can inspect it. Use "File > Show in Finder" after ward. Look, don't touch .
Then put it back, using "File > Consolidate".
Do you see your raw files in the folder, or is only a jpeg there?

How do I reset a RAW file to it's original settings?

[I use PS CS3 (Although I have access to CS4) and an intel imac]
I want to keep my RAW files unadulterated, in the state that they were shot, so that I can return to them at a later date to 'play' again, with a fresh point of view. However, when I open Bridge, i see they have the icon on them indicating that changes have been applied to them. I don't need the RAW files with the changes, I already have the jpgs and tiffs that i created from them.
Yes, i searched the forms here and found how to prevent the settings from being applied to RAW files that I open from now on: tested the method and it's good.
I also followed the remove xmp file advice and that worked, too.
However, I still have a couple of RAW files that didn't have xmp files associated with them, and I can't get rid of the little icon, hence i assume the changes are still there.
How can I recover the original unchanged RAW files for these?
What I've tried: in Camera Raw i 'reset camera raw defaults', because I thought that would return all the sliders to the unchanged state, but as you can see, it still indicates changes. The camera is panasonic, and came with Silky Pix to work with the RAW files: last night I tried SP on the same photo (created the spd file). Would the spd file have anything to do with my problem?
By the way, SP opened the raw file while it still had the CR changes applied and I think SP might have been working from the already-adjusted raw file. (Which is another reason why i want to keep the RAW files clean and original)

I just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 6 and installed Camera Raw. I’m taking RAW photos since some time so I hope this will improve my workflow.
Like Elizbonn, I’m a bit lost about some features of Camera Raw and the files it manages.
I understand what a RAW file is and I think I understand what a DNG file is.
Is there a reference document more specific than the Help files?
I found out by myself a couple of stuff but I’m not quite sure I guessed correctlt and I have some questions here. Maybe they are answered some place.
1. The RAW file is never modified (by any soft that I know of actually). Right?
2. DNG is a universal format that stores the same data as the original RAW with no loss. Right?
2.1. Yet creating a DNG file is optional. I have a Canon camera so my RAWs are in CR2 format which is widely supported and since I’m just an amateur photographer I don’t need to go for DNGs. Right? Or I could just trash the CR2 files without losing anything. Right?
3. The xmp file stores parameters about both the RAW file and the DNG (if I create one). It has to remain in the same folder at all times. I tried renaming: it works if it's applied to all the files. Some under-the-hood details are still unclear with Camera Raw:
3.1. When a RAW image is opened, if I do no modification and I click the Open Image button, an xmp file is created. What for? If I trash it nothing happens.
3.2. When a RAW image is opened, if I do some modifications and I click the Open Image button the modifications I did are stored in the xmp file. In the future, whenever I open that RAW file, Camera Raw will display the modified image provided the xmp is in the same folder. Right? The only way to revert to the original image is by moving the xmp file somewhere else. Right?
3.3. The Undo function with Camera Raw goes only one step backward. Right?
4. Camera Raw’s functions are in part similar to Photoshop Element’s and some are specific. Do they work the same?
