How-to find all songs with exclamation mark?

Hi,
Is it possible to have iTunes show all songs for which it can't find the file? The external hard disk with all the songs failed and I want to verify that I have restored all of the library.

  • ITunes Match sometimes skips / plays songs with exclamation marks

Using iTunes Match (v10.5.3) from my MacBook (OS X 10.6.8) I synched about 60G of music located on an external hard drive connected to my home-based AirPort Extreme base station into Apple's cloud. It works great from my iPhone and the iMac in my remote office, but occasionally when I connect with my MacBook I get these confounding exclamation marks between the song list number and the selection check box.
When this happens and I attempt to play a song with an exclamation mark sometimes iTunes prompts me to connect to the hard drive connected to the Airport and when I don't the exlamation points appear. Other times I can play the songs, but only if I individually select them; otherwise it skips all the songs with exclamation marks until it finds a local song (or recording) (i.e. without an exclamation mark).
Sometimes restarting iTunes gets rid of the exclamation marks, sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed that I often have this problem when I upload new music to the Airport-connected hard drive. But sometimes it happens without me uploading.
Through trial and error I'm starting to get a sense of what's happening but it still feels kind of arbitrary. Can someone explain what's happening?
    Many thanks in advance.

The problem is that iTunes thinks the external HDD is not connected so it can't find the actual song files. So the problem you need to solve is why is the external HDD not connected.

  • How to delete the tracks with exclamation marks?

I have just moved about 10 gigabytes of music I don't listen to off my hard disk to an external hard drive. This was to declutter my hard drive and get me down to about 50% free. Itunes now has all the moved tracks still listed with exclamation marks next to them all now. I want rid of these songs from my Itunes view. How can I get rid of these moved tracks now without manually deleting the batches. Annoying that exclamation mark field is not sortable or would be easy to mass delete.
Anyone got a neat solution out there?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, but now you have lost all your regular playlists, ratings, play counts, last played dates, non-embedded artwork etc.
Hope you don't miss them. If you do it might be possible to restore an earlier version of your library file and then bring it up-to-date with the free scripts at Doug's site.
An all iTunes, no loss of data approach would have been as follows:
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Command-A to select them and Option-Delete to remove them. You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.
I normally recommend the scripts as being an easier way to do things that you may want to do again.

  • I have duplicates, triplicates and songs with exclamation marks.

I keep an external drive for iTunes. When I reinstalled iTunes and pointed it to that drive, it imported my playlists, but the songs have exclamation marks. When I click on a song a window pops up asking if I want to locate that list; then the beachball kicks in and I have to perform a force quit.
Now I have three of every playlist and in the Music library, duplicate songs, some with [!] and some without.
Can/should I start over? If so, what are the steps?
    Thanks.

  • I recently removed duplicate songs in iTunes. Now my library has a bunch of songs with exclamation marks by them.  How do I get all my iTunes working again, but remove all the duplicate files?

I had manually deleted a number of duplicate iTunes that I originally have as mp3s.  I want to only have one iTune of each song, but they do need to be working copies.  However now, I have a bunch of iTunes that will not play now and they have an exclamation mark beside them.  How do I get these working again and still only have one copy of them?

I suspect you might have been suffering from logical duplicates. See this  thread for a discussion of the topic. Restore any files that are in your recycle bin, import any disconnected media either by adding the media folder to your library or using a tool such as iTunes Folder Watch. Once the files are back in your libray you can use the methods I outline in that thread or my DeDuper script to tidy up.

  • How to delete songs with exclamation mark and duplicates?

I have a large iTunes library, around 600GB. Due to a HDD failure some of the files are no longer in existance and so show up with a '!' in front of them. Is there a way to automatically find all of these and delete them?
In addition, according to iTunes, using the 'Show Duplicate' feature, I have around 50,000 files that are duplicates. Is there a way to sort this out (not manually)?

For the dead tracks, there is http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=removedeadsuper - I'm currently running it now.

  • Deleting Songs with Exclamation Mark (!) in Bulk

I have hundreds of songs, all (I think) duplicates that have an exclamation mark in the left most column. All these need to be deleted - is there a quick way of doing this or do they all have to be done manually.
I can't work out how to order the first column to put them all together. And I realise they represent songs that iTunes can't find.
    Thanks...

You can do this with a script called itunesremovenotfound which you can find here:
    http://home.comcast.net/~teridon73/itunesscripts/
Or if you prefer to say in iTunes, iT can be done with a combination of playlists:
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

Once you have all the dead tracks in a playlist, they can be deleted together.

  • Iphoto 08 photos all blank with Exclamation mark

Hey everyone... so I've been using Iphoto for years had a bunch of photos on there and then wanted to import old photos which I had in my picture file in finder, into iphoto so I could organize them better and view them easier... so I imported them and then all of a sudden all of the pictures in iphoto became blank even those from before and even pictures in the trash and recovered photos all blank when I go to open any of them there is an exclamation mark.
The files names and album names are all there all same as before no actual pictures.. so I went to help and it said that this was a common problem in iphoto 5 and to upgrade and restart iphoto i did this but nothing happen..
    anyone who can help?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The ! is an indication that the library has broken the file path to the original files. First make a backup copy of the library and run the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How to find all songs that do not have album art

I create several smart playlists for housekeeping, like songs with no year, songs with no album name, etc. I wanted to create a similar one that lists all songs that do not have any album art associated with it. I have not seen this option when creating a playlist, but I didn't know if there was a way to write a script (that could run on Windows) that could create this playlist for me. I can (and have) gone through each song individually to note which did not have album art, but I have almost 5000 songs, and this is not really feasible any more.
Has anyone else done anything similar to this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Awesome !!! Thank you very much. I did not realize you could use JavaScript to code against iTunes ...
I don't know if you have written any of these yourself, but do you know how to maybe create a smart playlist with this information via script? If not, no big deal. At least I know have something which I can use, I will just have to run it every so often.
Thanks again for pointing me to that site!

  • All songs got exclamation marks next to them after organizing media folder and consolidating

I don't know what to do anymore. After hours of moving things around in my media folder with all my songs in it and then consolidating (which is what I thought I was supposed to do, nearly all of my songs now have "!" marks next to them and I fear that I lost all my music.
Does anybody have any idea what I can do?

Hi there, moving your files about manually tends to get iTunes confused. I have written some scripts which have previously had some success in finding things for some people, while being no help for others. It all depends on how disimilar the structure you've created is from the standard one.
Coincidentally I've been revisiting this topic today and I've uploaded a new script called FindTracks which I'm hoping may do a better job than my previous script for the task. Currently it can make a good stab at finding tracks in both the "new" (iTunes 9 or later) or "old" layouts of the media media folder, misfiled as a compilation or vice-versa, with or without track or disc numbers and when the folder names may have been truncated. I've also got ideas to extend it with a fuzzy matching mechanism to cope better if/when files have been reoganised by say Windows Media Player which generally uses longer file & folder names and has different substitution rules for characters that can't be used in file & folder names.
If you're interested in the script, download it and test it out on a few tracks first. Yse the No option to manually confirm each path that it wants to fix until you're sure it behaves as you want it to. If it can't find your tracks I'd be grateful if you can give me some an example locations so I can tweak up the script to make it work better.

  • "delete all" songs with exclamation point.???? Too many to delete seperatly

how do i delete all the songs that don't work?(all the ones with the exclamation point). there are several hundreds of them in my library, so it would take forever to delete them individually.

You can get rid of dead tracks by a nifty use of playlists:
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

  • How to find all exclamation marks/error photos in library

    Hi,
Thanks to the forums, I know how to get rid of the exclamation marks (rebuilding, etc). But first, I want to locate all the dead links. The only way I'll know right now if a thumbnail is dead is if I double click on it and see the exclamation mark. Is there a way to filter them all out? Otherwise, I have over 5,000 pictures, and I definitely don't want to doubleclick through all of them to check.
Basically, I want to identify the error files first before I rebuild the library. Otherwise, I won't know which photos I'm missing in the new library, right?
For example, currently, photo #123 brings up the ugly exclamation mark. I can see #123 thumbnail, so I know which photo it is, but iphoto can't find the original link (I probably deleted it from the root folder a while ago). If I rebuild the library, I'm guessing the new library will know not to include #123, since it can't find the original file. This means if I didn't know #123 was there to begin with, I wouldn't know it was missing from the new library, right? In this case, I know I'm missing #123, and I want to make sure I find it first before rebuilding. So, is there a way to make iphoto just show all the problem files?

    No.
If you rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager it will list the files it cannot find.

Shouldn't really be the MPE at fault here ... what is the codec of the footage/sequence/project?
Second, can you create a new project in PrPro, then in the media browser, import that sequence from the other project?
