How to fix a 1st generation ipod touch that wont restore out of recovery mode

My iPod touch (1st gen) is currently in recovery mode, however when i go to restore it so i can use it, the iPod turns off after iTunes extracts the software, and when it turns back on, i get an error message.

- Try DFU mode and then restore

- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 1st Generation Ipod touch  keeps crashing/going into stand by mode 3.1.3

I have a 1st generation ipod touch that I recently restored to the newest firmware 3.1.3. My problem is that after this restore and subsequent restore attempts is that the device keeps clicking off to a black screen when I use wifi or transition from different desktop screens. The device does not completely crash as once the screen goes black I can hit the home button an slide to unlock. I have found that if I disable wifi this problem does not occur. I have tried to both reset and restore with no success. Any suggestions or ideas?

If a restore did not help, I'm afraid you have a hardware issue there.

You can't. That is the last version for that model, which is a 2nd Generation:

If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. • How to wipe a 1st Generation iPod Touch keeping the 2.2.1 software

I want to sell my first generation iPod Touch (have an iPhone now).
I want to wipe all personal data from the iPod, but I want to keep the 2.2.1 software update that I purchased from it.
Not sure how to do it.

    You could restore.
    Page 111 of the manual:
"If you restore, the latest version of iPod touch software is reinstalled, default settings
are restored, and data stored on iPod touch is deleted, including downloaded
applications, songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other
data. In iTunes, you can also restore from a backup without deleting data stored on
    iPod touch.
    Page 96:
"Erase all content and settings: Connect iPod touch to your computer or a power
adapter. Choose General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.”
This feature resets all settings to their defaults and removes all your information and
media on your iPod touch by overwriting the data stored on iPod touch."

By updating the iOS on the iPOd.  The 1G can go as high as 3.1.3.  That works with a lot of apps.  But some apps require a higher iOS and/or newer iPod.
