How to get rid of bugs or trojans off of my mac.

I believe my computer has been bugged. Long story short, I got rid of cable, my son wanted to watch football, and without permission tried to download a streaming program. I trashed the downloaded program and cleaned out the bin but I am afraid it is too late. Now I have questionable pop-ups (asian wives, date hotlines etc..), and a website called "MacKeeper" keeps popping up. I have read the warnings against MacKeeper so I have steered clear. Another issue is that I can no longer download any ".doc" files, I am an online student and cannot download any assignments the teacher has posted (all are ".doc" files). I got the Apple App "ClamXav" but have come up with no results. I have considered doing a total sweep of my computer but was wondering if there was another way without having to backup everything and then upload it all back after the sweep. I have a MacBook Pro (late 2011) with Mac OS X version 10.7.5. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Right-click or control-click the line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:

Greetings all,
My daughter's boyfriend has a 2012 MacBook Pro with a bug (yes, real insects) infestation. They live in a tropical climate and the insects are more adaptable than they are in, like, California. Anyway, the insects have gotten to the point where they actually prevented the machine from starting up. The boyfriend took the machine to his local Apple store where they were able to get the machine to boot up but they refused to do anything else with the machine (ie. get rid of the bugs) because they were afraid that the bugs would get loose and infect the other machines in the store.
Obviously, we're looking for a solution. So far, I have double bagged the machine with a No Pest strip. I opened the bag yesterday and found one or two bugs kinda flailing around in there but not much else.
Any thoughts?

The OP here is likely talking about tiny ants, ..living in the tropics same as the OP comment, thats most likely what shes referring to.

I tried the bellow. restored it twice. this morning i tried to update to ios 6.1.2 i'd be updating from like ios 4. something. i had tried to update to 5 but it never would. so i figured i'd give it a try. Stripes on screen - how to get rid of them?

Help! Since the day before yesterday, my Imac has been showing little stripes on the screen. They look like barcodes, and they're one pixel in width. I closed a diashow and then suddenly the stripes appeared. I don't know how to get rid of them. I've turned the mac off and on, I searched through preferences, changed resolution, nothing helped.

You installed the "Genieo" malware. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the malware (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If youever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.

The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
          Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
          Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

You can hide your purchases, which you can do from the QuickLinks > Purchased option from the main page in the iTunes Store on your computer. This won't hide any apps that are on your device, just those in your purchase history when you go to re-download any. Whether it will stop the new app update available messages, I'm not sure.

The banner usually indicates that the memo is "Paused." If you go back into voice memos, touch the word "Done" beside the big red pause button, give it a name, then it will show in a list. Touch the memo in the list then touch the trash can icon that should appear.
