How to get Time Capsule to broadcast n/ac only

Hi
I'm guessing this cannot be done as it isn't made obvious - but can it be done? I've found a lot around the older time capsules and older Airport Utilities, but does anyone know how to do this on the newest Capsule (looks like a tower) and the newest Airport Utility?
Would be much appriciated.

Thanks for the reply & answer
Thats a shame, my only reason in wanting to do so is I thought I read that when people turn off unnecessary broadcasting like a/b/g it improves their signal. Wasn't sure of this, but wanted to try it as I might as well.
Yes I do know that ac only works with my iMac (2013) and iPhone 6 - all our other devices such as iPad 2, iMac (2011) won't.
I only wanted to try improving my PS4 connection, it's in the next room pretty much and the WiFi signal varies from 70% - 90% - it averages 80% - my iMac in the same room gets 38mb download on WiFi, and the PS4 gets about 21mb. I'm guessing it's the PS4 receiver not being so good, but I remember the days I used to get a signal at the end of the garden with a Linksys Cisco, I can hardly get a signal now in my living room. Again though, that was over 7 years ago when no neigh boroughs had WiFi, problem nowadays there is so much interference.

  • How to get time capsule to stop blinking amber?

I have an Airport timecapsule and it keeps blinking amber.  I have disconnected the power source to it and my cable modem several times and it continues to taunt me, blink, blink.  Oddly it says it is backing up regularly and I have wifi.  Does anyone have any thoughts or this?

It might be a good idea to find out "why" the Time Capsule is blinking amber.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the amber dot and a message will appear to tell you why the Time Capsule is complaining...along with suggested actions to remedy the issue
It might be something as simple as a message that an update is available for the Time Capsule

  • Can't get Time Capsule to appear in AirPort Utility

Have been mucking with my new Time Capsule and somewhere during that process have done something which is preventing Time Capsule from appearing in my AirPort utility which is frustrating as **** cause now I can't change any of its settings.
I'm within range. Have attempted to connect via wireless and ethernet. Have turned on and off several times. Have reset it with the pin hole at the back.
The wireless network it is currently configured to host will appear after a reset in my wireless menu. But will still not appear in AirPort utility.
How do I get Time Capsule to re appear in AirPort utility so that I can properly configure it.

Have you followed the steps on page 30 of your TC Setup Guide?
Did you do a factory reset?

  • I cannot get time capsule back "on line" (green)

I cannot get time capsule back "on line" (green); tried reset button; tried unplugging everything; comes back on flashing amber, won't get back to green; computer now can't find my network.
    what now?

Ok.. we still need to know how are you connected to the TC.. YOU not the cable side.. the YOU side.
Are you using wireless or ethernet to your computer? If not please plug in ethernet and turn off the airport in the computer.
Now reopen the airport utility.. can it find it..
If not press the reset on the TC for 10sec.. until the led on front flashes rapidly.
The AU should now find the TC.
Make sure you leave the TC in router mode.. unfortunately the later AU tends to bridge the TC without permission from you.. one of those extra helpful things Apple did.
If you are still on Lion download and use 5.6 utility. It is far superior.

You can also load it into ML but it is tricky.

Apple have removed useful functions and ease of use.. although I guess they would disagree with the later.

  • How fast would Time Capsule restore 500GB over wi-fi, Thanks

How fast would Time Capsule restore 500GB over wi-fi, Thanks

Using Ethernet, you normally get around 30 GB per hour transferred, so about 16-17 hours that way.
Wireless would be about 3-5 times slower, on average, so a very rough estimate would be 50-80 hours over wireless. Much depends on your actual wireless connection. Do you know what that is?

  • How to Use Time Capsule to Backup Three Computers?

    Hello,
I just unwrapped my new Time Capsule today, and am starting to set it up. I did all the AirPort Utility stuff, and the Wi-Fi is working great. I now know how to set up Time Machine on my computer, but I need to know how to get Time Machine on three computers. I don't know if I have to partition or what, so may I have instructions please? Thank you!
    C h r i s t o p h

Oh that's an easy one. Simply install the TimeCapsule software onto each of the computers you plan to back up. Once installed, you will be able to use the same set-up from your computer, select the Airport Extreme Time Capsule, and begin the back up.
Time Capsule will create an individual data file for each of the computers backing up to it. My only advice (you probably already know this) is to do your first back-up using an Ethernet cable. You are good to go from there.

  • How big a Time Capsule do i need, I'm totally new to Mac!

Hi, how big a Time Capsule do I need in order for it to work as my backup? Let say if I bought an Imac with 2 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD and with that, bought a 2 TB Time Capsule for backup, would that be enough or would I need to buy a 3 TB Time Capsule? Thanx!

But if I buy the Imac I wrote about in my previous question (2 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD), would I then need to buy two, 2TB Time capsuls,
If you plan to fill up most of  the space on the iMac right from the start, then you might need more space. Few users ever use more than about 75-80% of the space on their computers. I was figuring you would fill up about 75% of the drive....around 1.5 TB or so.  3 TB backup would be about right.
If I buy 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD, then 2 TB Time Capsule will be enough, right?
    Correct.

  • How to use time capsule with a pc

I am thinking about getting time capsule for my home.  My wife has a pc.  Can she back up to the time capsule and ho difficult is it?

For desktop computers always use external drives.. they are faster and more reliable than network drives. And cheaper.. plus the drive can be formatted in the native OS format.
But if you have a laptop or both are laptops, connecting external drives is just one more thing to be forgotten.. whereas the TC is a wireless backup point designed by apple specifically for Time Machine. It was never designed for any other OS.. but you can store files in it.
Read the info from our TC and TM expert Pondini.. especially on the issues of sharing data and TM backups.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
    See Q3 in particular.
You can use a USB drive plugged into the TC to keep the backups from the PC separate to the Mac.

  • How to use time capsule for wireless back-up but not internet?

    Hello,
I have a tower and recently a laptop at work. The tower is connected to our local network with an ethernet cable and the laptop with wireless. So, the internet connection is fine for both.
I was hoping to use my time capsule to do time machine backups on my laptop. Do you have any advice on how to configure this? I do not want to use the time capsule to extend my Internet, as I believe my work I.T. would prefer to handle all access to their  network.
Perhaps there is some documentation about doing this that you could point me to? I have not been able to find it.
    Thank you for your help.

Your original question was How to use Time Capsule for wireless back-up but not Internet?
There is no reason for you to connect the tower....or anything else...using Ethernet if your goal remains that same as you stated.
If you are asking if you can backup the Tower using Ethernet, and not wireless, then you can connect the tower to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule....not the WAN port.
Yes, it appears to work without plugging into my tower.
    Correct, it will work.
I just have to select the network that it created. Of course, I have no access to the Internet while this is happening and it can not auto backup, unless I am on that wireless signal.
As I stated, that is the downside to trying to back up without an Internet connection.  You have to establish another network...and backup over that network.
If you are asking if you can stay connected to the work network while also backing up to your non-Internet "private" network, that is not possible.

  • How to add Time Capsule to a Telewell ASDL Router

I tried to connect Time Capsule (2 TB a bit older model) to a Telewell ASDL Router and then run Time Machine through WiFi to Time Capsule. However, the only way I was able to make it work was to plug Time Capsule to the MacBook with an ethernet cable. When I tried to plug Time Capsule to the Telewell Router (with an ethernet cable) the internet connection of the router got disconnected. So I believe I am asking how to connect Time Capsule to the router, and if I need to do something in addition (i.e. is is possible to run two WLANs - the one from Telewell and the other from Time Capsule simultaneously?).
    Thanks for your help!
    Matti

Put the TC in bridge mode and plug it into the Modem.. it will work fine if you set it up before you plug it in.. I have given extremely detailed instructions here..
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5703308?tstart=0
Are you really using Snow Leopard?? If so the manual setup from 5.6 utility is a bit different but the overall information is still correct..
You can run two different WLANs without issues.. you must setup the TC to create a wireless network anyway.. do not try to extend or join the modems' wireless .. that is wrong.
It has to be plugged into the modem by ethernet.

  • How will the Time Capsule support IPv6 and coop with the new emerging security threats that will emerge due to the new technical possibilities that IPv6 provide?

How will the Time Capsule support IPv6 and coop with the new emerging security threats that will emerge due to the new technical possibilities that IPv6 provide?

    Cross your fingers and hope.
Obviously if there is any big or known threat Apple will send out a firmware fix.
But the TC is designed to be end user simple device. It has no firewall that is visible at any rate. I don't know that it truly doesn't have a firewall but it is not part of the end user controls.
IMO if you have major security concerns that go beyond end device firewall, which is where Apple do put most of the security, since firewall in the router is plainly not a stop to anybody deliberately downloading an infected file or website, and most end users.. do not want a firewall that prevents them using the web like a business does, where only certain ports are allowed. Everything else tough luck.. you are not allowed to use it. Then TC is unsuitable for you anyway.. buy a proper firewall appliance.

  • How to setup TIme capsule with a DSL router step by step?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know how to conncet Time Capsule set by step through a DSL router?
I already have a DSL router, but want to connect my time capsule to that router.
Do i connect it through ethernet?, and is it possible to have my time capsule as a different router at home with a different password than the DSL router?, if so how is that possible?, is going to have the same download/upload speed as the DSL router?
    Please help, thanks

    You simply bridge the TC.
Plug it by ethernet into the adsl modem router and it will work fine.
nd is it possible to have my time capsule as a different router at home with a different password than the DSL router?,
No, the TC will cause trouble if you set it up as a router.. it has to be bridged. You only have a single adsl connection but there are some ISP that allow a secondary pppoe login and some modems that allow it. It is pretty difficult setup. Ask your ISP as there is often a charge that is very high for the second connection. It will still share the same link so there is no improvement in speed, merely two different authentications sharing the same line. The TC can do pppoe client but has nothing very fancy about it.
