How to go from leopard to snow leopard

I am trying to figure out how to upgrade to Snow Leopard.  Currently I am at OS X 10.5.8.   I have checked all the updates and upgrades through Apple and have not found anything.  What am I missing?  In the end I want to get all the way to Mountain Lion if possible.  Thanks for the help.

10.6 has to be purchased, it is not available through Software Update.  The way to obtain it is to call you country Apple online store, which in the US is 800-MY-APPLE. Order 10.6 Snow Leopard from the legacy products list. When you get it, install it, then use Software Update to bring Snow Leopard to the latest 10.6.8 release.
After that, if your system will support it, call the Apple online store again, and purchase a download code for Lion. Mountain Lion can only be purchased from the App store.
If you do upgrade to Lion, one gotcha to be aware of is that support to run PowerPC programs was dropped in Lion. Many discovered this when their Office 2004 programs wouldn't run.  Also, the Lion minimum memory is 2GB, however, many have found that they need 4GB for reasonable performance.

  • How to publish from iweb using snow leopard

    Hi,
Having had my iMac for some 4.5 years I finally have a real reason to use iweb and now can't work out how to publish from it.
I only have a mobile me option come up when I click the publish option. My mobile me account was deactivated some time ago and reactivation is not an option. I can't see any other option for publishing. Is there one or have I missed my chance?
Has anybody faced the same problem and found a solution?
    Thanks,

What version of iWeb are you using?  iWeb 09 or 08?
If using 08, then you'll need to select publish to a local folder and use Cyberduck or FileZilla or Transmit to upload your site to another server.
If using iWeb 09, then select your site name and a drop down menu should appear that has 3 options - publish to MobileMe, publish to ftp and then publish to a local folder.  You either need to select publish to ftp or local folder to upload your site to another sever.  This is what you will need to do anyway come the end of June when MME will be no longer.
    Find a new host now.

  • How to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

My brother recently donated his imac(Tiger version) and bought a new Mac with snow leopard already installed. So I cleaned up my new imac with a fresh install and tried to upgrade it to snow leopard but no to avail.
popped in snow leopard (upgrade disc) -> installer rebooted -> i selected the language -> then Error: "Mac OS X Cannot be installed on this computer"
Anyone can help me? Thank you.

Yes like V.K. said a retail copy is your best bet, but still check that you have an Intel Mac before you spend money on a new copy of Snow Leopard.
a PPC mac wouldn't be able to even boot from a Snow leopard DVD. as the OP has gotten as far as booting from the DVd it means he has an intel mac.

  • How to upgrade from leopard

Hi. I have an aging Macbook but it's still perfectly capable of doing what I ask of it. I need to upgrade the operating system from Lion and I'm wondering how I can do that and what the best of the later systems is for me given my hadware constraints
    Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook5,2
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
    Hard Disk size is 120gig
    Thanks for any advice

You can upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Then, make a backup, insert the disc and upgrade. Finally, open  > Software Update and update to the most recent version.
Open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. Check if your programs are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com
I recommend you to add more memory to your Mac. 2 GB are enough for OS X Mountain Lion, but the system could be slow. You can use 6 GB > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook/White/2.13GHz

  • How to upgrade from Leopard Server 10.5.8 to Lion Server?

In anticipation of Lion, I finally retired my G5 2.7GHZ Mac Desktop running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 and moved the start up drive to an 2 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo MacMini.
    It is running fine.
I would like to now upgrade to Lion Server, but without spending $499 for Snow Leopard Server. I do have a Evaluation Copy of Snow Lleopard Server 10.6. Can I use this as an intermediary transition to Lion?
Any other suggestions short of spending the $499?

There is no way at this time to go from 10.5 to 10.7 with out extra steps.
If this is a Mac Mini and Not a Mac Mini Server you can get the 29.99 Snow Lep client disk and install client on the mac mini then install lion and server on it making it a server and then bring your data back
If this is a Mac Mini Server you can install it from a Snow Lepored Client Via target disk mode. then you can erase the drive and install fallowing this apple support document.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4766
Now Migration will only mode your data and not update the OS, so migrating is not the solution for you. if you where to buy a new machine with Lion installed then migrating your data would he a help, but to update the OS you need to have 10.6.7 or higher
or a secound machine and be able to do the install over Target Disk mode.

    Hi there,
You have to purchase 10.6 first & update it to 10.6.8 to get the App Store, which is the only place you can get 10.7, 10.8, or 10.10/Yosemite...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)

        * DVD drive for installation

  • How to Boot from Leopard Upgrade disk??

I bought a Leopard upgrade disk last year for my iMac. Today I am having computer troubles. But there seems to be no diagnostic programs on the Leopard upgrade disk, nor does it seem to be a bootable disk. What should I do next?
The problem with the computer is, everywhere I click I get the rainbow colored spinny wheel. When I want to open an app, I get the spinny wheel. When I want to scroll in a window, I get the spinny wheel. It may take several minutes before the spinny wheel goes away, and the command carries out. Illustrator flat out refuses to launch, as well.

That's different. It's not an upgrade disk. It should be bootable. Insert the disk in your Mac and reboot while holding down the 'c' key. What OS are you running? What model iMac? Give some some info please. It will not have hardware diagnostics on it. It will have Disk Utility so you can run Repair Disk.

  • Want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I spent over an hour through the apple store web site and cant find a way to upgrade directly from Mac OS 10.4 Tiger to the latest Snow Leopard version.
The Apple web site gives only one purchase possibility : to upgrade from Leopard 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6. But how to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard ?

this has been oft asked and answered. you can buy a Macbox set which will give you snow leopard, ilife and and iwork. or you can buy a $29 standalong snow leoaprd dvd although there is a big disagreement on the board whether using it to go from tiger to snow leopard directly violates ULA (I think it does). but the actual disk is the same as in the macbox set and either one will upgrade you to SL.

  • How can I downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard?

    Hello.
Yesterday, I upgraded my Mac to Mac OS X (10.7 Lion) from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. However, I wish to downgrade.
Obviously, I would like to not lose any data at all. However, I have never downgraded before.
I still have the Snow Leopard installation disk that came with my Mac.
How should I do this? I was thinking it would be easiest to simply head on over to an Apple Store...
I did some research (aka Googling), and I read up on the subject quite a bit.
If I simply put in the disk, will I be able to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard as easily as the upgrade was?
Also, I have heard about holding down the "C" button to do this... how exactly?
I have never backed up my Mac, nor used Time Machine.
Also, is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a separate disk, and set it up so that I can switch between them on command?
Will all of my preferences be saved, or does this wipe everything, not just the system and libraries folders?
I realize that I have a lot of questions, and therefore I appreciate everyone's help in advance. Thanks again.
    Sincerely, Zach

    Backup your files.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Erase Drive
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Upon completion quit DU and return to installer. Install Snow Leopard. Restore your files after the installation has completed.

How do I upgrade to snow leopard from leopard if I don't have the Mac App Store?

It has never been on the MAS. It's never been a download anywhere (except, maybe, as a pirated version on a torrent, which, along with being "free," will probably bring along some nice malware.)  It has always been a DVD, which may be possible to obtain by calling Apple and asking for Phone Sales. Should stlll only be $29.

my mac is running OS X 10.6.8, I want to up grade but the oldest option is from Leopard to snow leopard. How do I get there?

You are already running Snow Leopard. To upgrade further:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard on my 2008 MacPro. How do I avoid problems with the upgrade process?

#1 Do a complete bootable backup of your drive before upgrading. That way should anything happen you can revert back to the start and try again.
Make sure you meet Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
