- Did you purchase the device from Apple or an authorized reseller? If not, then you were scammed.
- It means you bought a gray market phone that was replaced, reported lost, or reported stolen, then re-sold illegally. It has no warranty and Apple will not service it with an out of warranty replacement.
- If your phone was replaced, it was most likely refurbished.
- You cannot tell the difference between a refurbished phone and a new one.
- check your serial number if its starts with 5K then its refurbished model
Not true. All it does is identify it as 'service stock'. It may be refurbised, or it may be new. There is no way for you, or even someone at an Apple Store, to tell the difference.

If there is ever a hardware problem that requires service, you will most likely not be able to get it serviced or replaced by Apple.

How to know that iphone is locked or unlocked ?
In my case when I put the sim card of SK telecom the iphone display the carrier of SK telecom and when I replace the sim card with KT then it displays the carrier with KT telecom in the settings.
Does that mean my iphone is unlocked and it is carrier free?
In my case these both sim are expired so they dont show any networks.
They just display "Searching " and then "No service" but in the carrier section (settings) it displays the corresponding telecoms and the phone numbers.
So is it unlocked phone.
If it is unlocked phone then I was thinking o use a mini sim card(SK telecom) in it which is not expired by cutting it into micro sim card .Will it work ?

If you can open the phone, you can go to Settings>General>About>Carrier and it should be listed there. If you cannot get into the phone, you can try calling Apple Care and asking them. You are not addressing Apple here, so no one can check that.
Only the carrier the device is locked to can authorize the unlock. Once you finid out who that is, contact them to see if they provide unlock services. If the do, see if you qualify. If you do, then follow their instructions. If you do not, there isn't anything that you can do.

This would be an iPhone 3Gs with no doubt. If the model is a MC model, it has to be the 3GS. The iPhone 3G was never sold long enough the produce MC models.
