How to make Excel, Word, Powerpoint the Default programs?

Hey guys,
Just got my new MBP, and I need to know how to make Excel, Word, Powerpoint the default programs when opening one of their files? Currently, the trial version of Iwork opens the programs which drives me crazy.....
So, for example, for an Excel file, I want Excel to open it, NOT Numbers......etc....

Select a file of that type in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, change the Open With entry for it to the desired application, click on Change All, and confirm the action.

How to make a custom template the default for Apple Mail (10.7.5)?

Hi,
I'm OK with making a new custom template in Apple Mail. It shows up fine once under "custom" in the stationary pane (and once I take off signature in a new email). But... that's a lot of trouble to go through everytime I want to send an email.
So the question is: can I make my custom template my default for all my emails, unless I want to manually change it? Seems like this should be possible but I can't figure it out and haven't run into any solutions (only on how to make a template).
Do I really have to select it each time?

As an FYI: I just solved the problem by going the "low road." I'll be a bit laborious in case someone else wants a solution at a later date (I know I Googled the topic and found nothing). I experimented by simply:
Opening a new email message
Selecting my custom template
Copying the custom signature (Select All)
Opening another new email message
Selecting Edit on the Signature pulldown menu
Hitting the plus symbol to create/add a new signature in the pane
Pasting into the new signature
Naming it
Selecting "Choose signature" at the bottom of the signatures pane
And violà!!
It now appears as a possible selection *and* as the default.
Better yet - it is now my default and will work as a reply to an email.
I think I got it all right in the list above.
OK, granted, this is a pretty simply signature - a list of my website, SoundCloud, twitter etc with those names in bold and a graphic of my color logo - but... it works! YMMV.
Give it to Apple to make it so simple that any fool could do it (that would be me), you wouldn't need a "specialized" app, and - of course - there wouldn't even be instructions on how to do it!

How do I —once and for all— tell my network to always link to my Airport?

To give a network the highest priority, drag the name of the network to the top of the list. This is the network your computer will attempt to join first.

How to make COPY drop action the default?

I've a working drag&drop implementation for copy and move actions.
The thing is, the by far predominant action for the application is copy, so users need to nearly always press the control button during D&D. So I'm looking for a way to make copy action the default and if the user wants to do a move, can still do this by holding shift during D&D.
Until now I couldn't find out how to do this. Do you have an idea?

I've just downloaded Adobe Flash Player 13, but .flv files and .f4v files are not played by Adobe Flash Player. I've tried to make it default player but i didn't release which file .exe to browse for (by right-clicking and choosing Open with > Choose default program...).

There's a Flash Player Projector (standalone) in the Flash Professional CS6/Players folder, but it's usually outdated.
When browsing to an app to use from the Properties window, go there, but... download this one: Windows Flash Player 13 Projector and replace the Flash Player that's in that folder.
If you're looking to test Flash files you've authored, then you'll need the Projector, but if you're just looking for a good player for FLV and F4V, then you should use VLC Media Player. http://www.videolan.org/

How to make "Show All" folders the default in Finder

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and I'm having a lot of problems customizing my Finder folders to my liking. I love the new "Arrange By..." function, but the only thing that's bothering me is having to manually click "Show All" for my folders and files every time. Is there any way of making this the default setting?
If not, is there an alternative way for keeping my folders locked in a set order? For example if I have the a main folder and within it are the subfolders "Art" "Music" "Photos" "Misc" can I have them so they always show up in that order and won't rearrange themselves everytime I add new files into the folder?
I hope that question makes sense.

I am using Indesign CS 5 with Win7 and have followed the instructions (eg. http://www2.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/msl/Images/Computers/p3_07_howto_setup_document.pdf) of how to change my Units/Meas. from picas to inches several times. However, it always goes back to picas when I start a New document. Then I have to change the margins in Prefs to inches then go back to the new document. To set default preferences, they must be saved while no documents are open.
Close all documents but leave InDesign open, and set preferences the way you like. Now when you create a new document, it will follow those preferences.

I have to create the subscription programatically, which is different from what you mention. To further clarify my challenge:
I have three parameters in a report: date-interval (string), start-date (date), end-date (date). If the user selects for example "last week" as the date-interval, the DEFAULT values for the other two are as follows:

The user can then select intervals like "today", "yestarday", "this month" etc, and the other two parameters are calculated based on that date-interval parameter. Now, If I programatically create a subscription to a report that contains these three parameters and set a value of "last week" for the date-interval parameter, the subscription stores the fixed days (say september 10 to september 16) producing a report of the same week every time the subscription is run and not updating the correct interval to LAST-WEEK!. What should I put as the value for start-date and end-date when I create the subscription to have these two params get the DEFAULT calculated value based on the third param date-interval?

How to make JRE1.5.0 the default JRE

Hi all,
I have downloaded JRE1.5.0 and put it into the /usr/java folder where SJDS default JRE also is located. Then I went to -> Launch -> Preferences -> Java. In the Plug-in Control Panel I went to -> Advance, but JRE1.5.0 is not listed there. I clicked on Other and linked to /usr/java/jre1.5.0 and applied the change. But if I check java -version from the command line it is still the jre1.4.2_02 version.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The command line java will still pick up the one in your path:
#which java
/usr/bin/java
and as you can see that is a link:
#ls -la /usr/bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2004-04-20 11:41 /usr/bin/java -> ../java/j2redefault/bin/java
So this is the link you'll have to change
#rm /usr/java/jdredefault
(you have to remove the old link first or the next command will create a link inside the /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/ directory!)
#ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.5.0 /usr/java/j2redefault

I have been using photo stream to share photos between my iPhone and iPad for the past several years. I recently turned on the iCloud Photos Beta program for my iPhone, but when I go to activate it on my iPad it warns me that I'm going to lose some 6,000+ photos. I use my iPad for editing and storage of final prints before I send them to my Mac to be printed. I have a unique library set up on my iPad, but the one via iCloud library mimics my iPhone's library as a default. Is there a way to set it up so that iCloud mimics my iPad library rather than my iPhone? I don't organize photos or the library on my iPhone, but heavily rely on my iPad and don't want to lose the 6k photos to transition to iCloud.

How to make "no delivery receipts" the default?

Is there a setting to disable the delivery receipt for all files you send? Instead of having to go to each file in the "Sent Files" list and manually uncheck the "Notify when recipients viewed" box? Currently, in SendNow, you can set that option before even sending the file and the option remains sticky when you log-in the next time.

Adobe Send doesn't currently offer the option to set notification preferences as a default. I can't comment whether that feature will be available later, but you are welcome to continue to use Adobe SendNow if you prefer.
