How to Move Music Library from one external HD to another

I had about 60GB of music on an external hard drive, nicely organized and "linked to" from iTunes (just upgraded to version 5). I recently purchased a larger external hard drive and basically copied the contents of my older external drive to the new one, preserving all folder structures from the root of the drives down (but the name of the drive itself is different.) I was hoping I could just do a search/replace of the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file in my Music/iTunes folder, to replace the name of the old drive (volume) with the new one. I did, and iTunes launches fine, preserving my playlists, song ratings, etc... but whenever I try to play any of the songs, it says it can't find it (I can manually point iTunes to it, but I don't want to do that for 15,000 songs...) Strange thing, though, is that if I quit out of iTunes and re-open the Library XML file, all the paths have been reset to their original location!! What am I missing? Thanks in advance,
Jesse

I just want to add that the iTunes folder (with the library xml file and such) is on my local hard drive, in the typical Music/iTunes location. I don't want to simply re-import the songs 'cuz I'd lose playlist contents and ratings, and I don't want to "consolidate" the library because I want to keep my music folders and filenames as I currently have them. Basically, I just want iTunes to realize the songs have simply changed location from one external drive to another... thanks again.

  • How do I move an iTunes library from one external drive to another?

I need to move my iTunes library from one external disk to another, because the original disk is about to fail. So, I went into iTunes Perferences --> Advanced, and set the library to a new, empty folder on the new drive.
Nothing changed. I expected all my music to vanish from iTunes, so that I would have to re-import it. However, all the music remained, still on the old disk. At this point, if I were to recreate the library on the new disk, I would have all of my music twice.
Is it possible to move an iTunes library from one external drive to another, or am I stuck with my original choice until I buy a new machine? If I can move it, can one of you clever folks explain how it could be done?

However, those are all dealing with old versions of iTunes that still contained the Advanced --> Consolidate Library command which is no longer part of the app. (I'm on iTunes 10.6.1.)
Consolidate is still part of iTunes.
It is in iTunes menu File > Library > Manage library > Consolidate.
The article you linked to is old and it is (and was) a hacky way of doing it.
Just copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to new location, hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) when launching iTunes.

I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
(including the music files) from one external disc to another without
considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.

    So am I understanding correctly?
You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.
    Good luck!

  • How do I move iTunes library from one user account to another?

I bought apps for a (now obsolete) Apple ID, however, I then created a new Apple ID, which I now use.  How do I delete the old Apple ID and is it possible to move my iTunes library and other files and folders from my current user account to a newly created user account?  Will this allow me to use only the new Apple ID instead of having to sign in/out bewteen 2 IDs which is frustrating.

  • How to move entire library from one computer to another w/ external hd

I want to move all of my music to a new mac I purchased without losing my ratings, playlists and playcounts. All of my music is on an external harddrive. Do I just plug the external harddrive into my new mac and then just drag the entire music folder from the external into itunes? It seems to me like doing this will result in losing all of my playlists ratings and playcounts. Does anyone know if I can remedy this by exporting the xml from my old mac and then dropping that in itunes on my new mac and also changing the location of my music folder in the preferences pane of itunes on my new mac? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

If you have any problems with the library in the new account you might have to download and run BatChmod on the library to reset the ownership and permissions to the new account owner for all of the files in the library.  User the settings shown in the screenshot below:
For Owner use the owner name for that account.  If the account uses a different Group then use it also.  You can find the group name by seleting a file in your other account and typing Control+i to bring up the Info window.  The ownership and group will be shown near the bottom.

  • Moving a music library from one external hard drive  / disk to another

My music library is already on an external hard drive and I want to move it to another external hard drive (along with the music filkes). I have follwed the standard setps of chaning the itunes folder location, keeping my itunes folder organised etc. When I come to consolidate my library it doesnt find anything or copy anything accross? Is it just looking on my MAC drive do you think? How can I get it to look on my 1st external hard disk?
Getting fed up with this now - must be the 4th time I've had to move libraries from one machine / disk to another and each time I always end up having to re rate music, or have lots of duplicates etc.

Hi if you have songs you bought on itunes it should go through but not all the time so I know a trick because I had songs that got deleted by mistake I bought from itunes but this lets you get all music content out
    here's how it goe's
1st pulg your ipod in then go tostart menu click on my computer or just computer depending on what your model calls it
2nd Once in my comp click on your ipod drive go to tools or view under options click on file or floder then look for
the show all hidden files section make sure because this is very important click on the option ok it or apply it
3rd then a new file or floder will apear click on it then look for the music section the folders will have codes like a letter and number click on one of them because this is a block of some of the music then you will see the songs  you will have alot of these files so highlight them all it & drag them into the my music floder by you have to do it folder by folder to highlight all the songs they are broken off into differnt sections!! so each coded folder with music must be opened & then the music highlighted then draged into my music shouln;t take too long it took me like an hour total
Btw Itunes should have my music set as it's defualt so make sure then after that you can add music same way highlight all the songs in each coded section then click open hope I helped

  • Copying aperture library from one external disk to another fails with error -36

I am trying to duplicate my aperture library (449 GB) from one external hard disk to another. I get an -36 error and the copying fails before 1 GB is copied. I have repaired permissions and repaired my aperture library and have repaired both the source and destination disks. I am using a MB Air with a 256 GB HD (155 GB free) to perform the copy operation. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Rahul,
I have also used the Aperture First Aid to repair the perminssions and the library (just the first two options out of three provided).
    What else can I do?
Sorry, I overlooked that you already had done the repair options.
To prevent permission issues, I'd enable the "Ignore Ownership" flag on both drives, if you have not already done so.
Your copy-problem may be caused by a bad media file in your library.
You could try to copy in small installments.
Open the Aperture library package in the Finder by ctrl-clicking (right clicking) the Aperture library.
You will see a Finder window with folders like Masters, Previews, etc.
Create an empty folder on your new drive, name it something like ApertureLibraryBackup and drag the items from your current Aperture library on by one to this new folder.
When the copy fails, e.g. for the Masters folder, check, how much could be copied. The first file, that not could be transferred, is probably the bad image or video.
Delete this file from your Aperture LIbrary (using Aperture) and then try to copy the rest.
Post back, when you discover what cannot be copied.
    Regards
    Léonie
    P.S.
You enable the "Ignore Ownership" flag from the "File > Get Info" panel of the drive.

  • How to move iTunes Music Library from an external HD to another?

Yesterday I tried to move all my music from an external HD to a new bigger one.
Well, I encountered various problems, the most important one is that the “iTunes Music Library” file messed up.
I transferred all files and both “iTunes Music Library.xml” and the “iTunes Library” file in the new HD. I have to say that I didn't know so much about those two files and I thought that it was enough to move them in the new location; I discovered that those files included the information about where the music is located (among other infos), so it still redirects to the older HD.
However, now I’m trying to recreate the previous situation on the older HD, and I’m trying to “rebuild” the iTunes Library (I have a back-up of the xml file, even if it is not the running one).
This operation is very important for me because about two years ago I used (for a long time )an earlier version of iTunes that had a bug: even if wrote all the tag infos on an a mp3, the “artist name” and “album name” tags didn’t remained. But I still can see all the informations through the iTunes browser (thanks to the iTunes Music Library DB). So, I cannot recreate it from zero. I absolutely need to export the existing “iTunes Music Library” to the new HD, or at least to use the existing “iTunes Music Library”, leaving it where it already is and moving only the “iTunes Music folder” (even if I don’t want to use two external HDs, the older one holding the existing “iTunes Music Library” e “iTunes Library” files and the newer one holding the “itunes Music” folder I moved!).
As far as you know how can I move safely “iTunes Music Library” e “iTunes Library” files on the new HD applying them to the new “iTunes Music” folder??
    I really need your help!
    This article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307074 didn’t help.
    Stefano

Sorry, I wasn't responding to you, just the original poster. I didn't look at the date on that posting and didn't realize that you'd added a post that wasn't quite the same problem. In future, you'll find you get better answers if you start your own thread. You're issue really is a bit more complicated.
If iTunes currently recognizes all the music on both internal and the external drives, it should work. You have to make sure that both drives (old and new) are mounted. Make sure you have both "Keep iTunes music organized" (you probably already do) and "Copy files to iTunes..." (you probably don't) checked.
If not all of the music is currently in your iTunes library, perform the procedure with the music that is a part of the library and add the other stuff afterwards.
    Best of luck.

  • How to use one music library from one external hard drive on two different computers

I have 57 gigs of music in my itunes library on my laptop (Windows Vista).  I backed up the library onto an external hard drive.  I would like to play the music on a second computer (Windows XP) without putting the music on the second computer, just keeping it on the external hard drive.
I have the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime installed.  In iTunes on both computers, under Advanced Preferences I changed the iTunes media folder location to the folder on the external hard drive and checked the boxes for "Keep iTunes media folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".  Also under the File tab, "Organize Library", I clicked on "Consolidate Files" and "Reorganize Files in the folder itunes music".
On the second computer I tried holding SHIFT while launching iTunes until the prompt appears asking to create a new library or point to an existing library.  While attempting to point to the new location, I am only able to open the music folder, not set it as the location.  In advanced preferences when I click "change" for the itunes media folder location, I can locate the folder but the only button I can click on is "open" or "cancel".  "Open" will open the folder showing all my music.  I tried typing in the location.  It shows the correct location.
I was able to see the songs in the library in itunes on the second computer but it won't play the music.  There are no exclamation points next to the songs.  I am also able to see the playlists but there aren't any songs in the playlists.
There are no problems with itunes on the first computer.  Everything works as it should.
Ideally I would like to use the same folder on the external hard drive for both computers if possible.  But for now I want to at least get the music playing with the playlists on the second computer from the external hard drive.
    Please help.

  • How to move iphoto library from one account to another?

For one reason to another I'm making myself a new account on my mac. I'd like to move my iphoto library from the old account to the new one. I was wondering if the instructions about moving the library to a new location (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/9.0/en/pht6d607c42.html) is just for moving the library within an account? Or does it also work for moving from old account to a new one on the same machine.
If not, any instructions for moving the library to a new account on the same machine?

If you have any problems with the library in the new account you might have to download and run BatChmod on the library to reset the ownership and permissions to the new account owner for all of the files in the library.  User the settings shown in the screenshot below:
