How to override shortcuts to special characters?
I have a Mac Book Air with Finnish keyboard and according to the Keyboard viewer, there is not any built-in keyboard shortcut for curly braces. However, there are multitude of characters (e.g. the apple sign or the greek pi letter) that do have a shortcut and that I am pretty sure I will never use. Is there any way to override the standard shortcuts so that e.g. CTRL+p will be the left curly brace instead of the letter pi?

I think that's not correct. According to my keyboard viewer, on the Finnish layout curly braces are made with alt + shift + 8 and 9.
If you want to set up something different, you could try using system prefs/language & text/text/symbol and text substitution
Also you can make a custom keyboard mapping with this app:

How to assign shortcuts to special characters?
Hello everyone,
I have a question about assigning shortcuts, so here I go: I would like to know if there is a way (and if yes, how) to assign personal shortcuts to special characters on my newly acquired MacBook Pro running Mac OS Lion.
The problem is that I use the Swiss-French keyboard layout and that I cannot use directly the keyboard to insert characters, such as 'Ó' or 'Í' (capital letters), whereas – strangely – I can insert their respective lower case characters. I also happen to use various other characters from different languages, such as 'ð' or 'þ', to which I would like also to assign personal shortcuts, so as not to constantly have to change my keyboard layout for every single one of them.
Thank you very much for helping me out!
Cheers!Wow! Thank you very much for your very clear explanations Barney-15E!
Here is what I get when I try to do what you said (and what is actually what I have been doing up to now).
So basically this is what I get when I open Keyboard Viewer (I remind you that my keyboard layout is Swiss-French):
I then have two options to type either of the two accents:
Shift+^ to get `
Option+^ to get ´
The first accent works perfectly well. I can type all the needed letters bearing a ` accent, regardless of their respective case.
However, a problem arises when trying to type capital letters accentuated with ´ accent.
Here is what I get for the lowercase (Option+^):
Everything is fine (except that the ý is missing... Which is another concern of mine)...
But look what happens when I try to do the same for capital letters.
What the devil happened to the Á, Í, Ó and to the Ú? Only the É seems to remain...
And thus my problem. I cannot type Ó,... Using this method. What I get is a silly ´O or ´I... Uppercase letters are not accentuated.
I hope this time my problem was easier to understand...
The best way to solve this would probably be to assign shortcuts to special characters, but as mentioned above, apparently such a method does not exist, unfortunately... -
How can i remove the special characters from my keyboard on my iphone3gs
how can i remove the special character from my keybord keys on my iphone 3gs
What characters are you talking about exactly and why would you want to remove any?
There is really no way to modify Apple's keyboards or add your own in iOS, but there are some apps that may provide a work around. -
Mac OSX's "press and hold" shortcut to special characters won't work in Firefox.
Need to use accented special characters (áéö...) to write in my mother tongue. On Mac OS X 10.8.3 this can be done by simply pressing and holding a key and then selecting the right character from a list that shows up. It functions well in Safari and in Chrome but no success in Firefox 21.0. This makes Firefox a no-go although otherwise a great browser.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
To Enable SafeMode
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

How to Type Diacritical Alphabets / Special Characters
Dear,
I am looking for the solution of following issues in MS Word and Excel 2007 Onward Applications:
Our group members currently working in typing English articles on different chapters / topics and we are currently facing some problem with the same.
We seek your kind help for the solution of following issues that are being faced currently:
How to set the diacritical alphabets / special characters on your keyboard keys e.g. if I want to type Ā,
then i just use the following command to type the same.
How it is possible that I can easily type the special characters / diacritical alphabets with one combination only i.e. "Alt + a" for lower case alphabet e.g.
ā & "Alt+Shift+a" for upper case e.g. Ā, using the keyboard in U.S language.
Is there any option / add-in in MS Word / MS Excel that gives me solution of drop down option / suggestions of the word(s) to be typed.
- Spell check option with accurate suggestion(s) of diacritical words to be made available.
Seeking the solution of above matters anxiously.
Regards,
Kamran DamjiThe symbols that are available when you go to Insert|Symbol depends on what font you have selected when you open that dialogue or what other font you choose from the Fonts dropdown.
I cannot see how developing an exe file would help - your users would still have to activate it and choose the desired character(s). A possible solution would be for you to create a series of Autotext entries for the symbols you require then distribute those
to your users. See:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/add-autotext-HA010255209.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326538
For the spell-checking, you should use an appropriate Paragraph Style or Character Style for the Arabic text, with the Style's language set to the appropriate Arabic dialect, and make sure that Style is applied to the text in question. You will also
need to have the same Arabic dialect installed as a Proofing Language (see File|Options>Language).

How to define and use special characters
I need to define some special characters (such as an up-arrow and a down-arrow). I need to add these characters to Strings along with "normal" ASCII characters, and finally display the Strings with graphics.drawString().
Can anyone get me started or tell me where to look? I looked at the archive but apparently I'm not using the correct keywords.
Thanks in advance, Rickpublic void paint(Graphics g) {
super.paint(g);
g.drawString("up arrow: \u2191 down arrow: \u2193", 100, 100);
}Works for me.

Assign keyboard shortcuts for special characters.
I am using Microsoft Word 08 and taking a Latin course. I want to be able to make a keyboard shortcut to insert the long symbols over vowel: Ā Ē Ī Ō Ū ā ē ī ō ū. When I go to Insert then Symbol none of these show up on the pallet. As of now I have to copy and paste every vowel individually from the save file in which it is currently written.
I've already checked out that list, but it doesn't include the ones I'm looking for.
Go to system prefs/international/input menu and check the box for US Extended, plus the box for "show input menu in Finder." Then select US Extended in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder.
The characters you need can then be made by typing Option/alt + a, followed by the base character. Some fonts may work better than others.
Here is a list:

How to restrict special characters for a specific column
Dear gurus,
i have a table emp with a field field_1
in this particular field_1 is an address column where data can be like '12 st first floor' but suppose mistakenly user has entered the data as '12 st first floor & ' it should be restricted (not using trigger but can this be possible by using constraints )so for this how can we restrict the special characters not to get entered into the column.
regards,
friendAnother way of doing it.
drop table test_table;
create table test_table (col varchar2(50));
alter table test_table add constraint chk_address check (NOT regexp_like(col, '[[:punct:]]+'));
insert into test_table
(select 'some text' col from dual);

insert into test_table
(select 'some text!' col from dual);

Finding special characters in a string
Hi all, I'm using Oracle 10g.
I have a column name with special characters. how can i replace the special characters in the column with space and no space depending on the special character. please see the example below. can i use REGEXP_REPLACE?
create table
create table sample_test (
Name VARCHAR2(20 BYTE))insert table
insert into sample_test values ('O''NEIL')
insert into sample_test values ('B.E.VICTOR')
insert into sample_test values ('WILLIAM,L')
insert into sample_test values ('MARY-ANNE')
insert into sample_test values ('VON_ANCKEN')
insert into sample_test values ('BROWN;L')i would like the output as follows
Special Character Name Expected Name Remarks
Single Quotes O'NEIL ONEIL Remove quotes and no space
Dot B.E.VICTOR B E VICTOR Replace with space
Comma WILLIAM,L WILLIAM L Replace with space
Hyphen MARY-ANNE MARY ANNE Replace with space
Underscore VON_ANCKEN VON ANCKEN Replace with space
Semi Colon BROWN;L BROWN L Replace with space Please advise.
Thanks
BobA simple solution without regexp usage:
-- Test Data
with sample_test as
select 'O''NEIL' name from dual union all
select 'B.E.VICTOR' name from dual union all
select'WILLIAM,L' name from dual union all
select'MARY-ANNE' name from dual union all
select'VON_ANCKEN' name from dual union all
select'BROWN;L' name from dual
-- Query:
select name old_name,
translate(replace(name,'''',''),'.,-_;',' ') new_name
from sample_test;Explanation:
REPLACE deletes the quote
TRANSLATE replaces dot, comma, hyphen, semicolon and underscore
