How to password protect a numbers document

I'm trying to figure out how to password protect a numbers document.
My intention is to load this document onto a website, but only want authorized persons with the correct password to be able to access.
Any ideas??
Thanks

I am using Numbers 08
And the Numbers User Guide, supplied with iWork '08, make no mention of password protection, which was introduced in Numbers '09.
Looks like the best option is Wayne's second suggestion—open via File > Print > PDF > Open in Preview, then Save the resulting PDF document with encryption turned on.
An alternate, if you want the recipients to receive a copy of the Numbers '08 file, and to be able to edit that file, you could enclose it in a secure disk image file.
The basic procedure is to:
Use Disk Utility to create a new, blank, sparse disk image, assign a password and save.
Double-click the .dmg file (and enter the password when requested) to mount the disk image on your desktop, then Save a copy of your file to the (open) disk image.
When done, eject the image, and upload the (encrypted) .dmg file to the website.
Detailed instructions may be found in Disk Utility's Help files.
Launch DU (found in the Utilities folder in Applications), click the Help menu and choose Disk Utility help.
Go to the index, scroll to and click Security, then click a title similar to "Protecting confidential documents in a secure disk image." (a search on 'confidential' should also take you to a list containing that title.)
My version of DU is old enough that sparse images hadn't been introduced, or I'd post a copy of the article here.

Or, use a different application for your notes that does allow password protection. SimpleNote is one that springs to mind but there are many, many others.

Thanks much, just don't see it when I try to "save as" a pages document...

Sorry, clicking my old 08 icon was the problem.  Found the 09 book manual and it works (from another commenter).  Just not as user friendly as the "save as" function on a word document.  First time Microsoft has trumped Mac yet.

  • Password protect a Numbers file

Hello friends, I was wondering how to password protect a numbers file. I'm creating a financial report and only some eyes can see it. Anyway to force a user to enter a password before it opens is the goal. I appreciate your assistance. Gary

I advice against using the built in password function for really confidential data.
Apple has not specified what level of encryption is used, and it is possible that the encryption level is so low that any hacker can open the file.

How to password protect numbers file on iphone?
I've made a password protected numbers file on iMac and saved it to itunes.
When i open this file on my iphone for the first time i have to type in the password. But afterwards it's not protected anymore and i can open the file without the password!
How can i secure my files?

There is at this time no way to put a password in the Numbers app nor on a Numbers spreadsheet, and as Michael said it's not something a third-party developer could add. You can suggest that Apple add a password feature via their feedback pages:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
or you can look for a third-party spreadsheet app that does allow password-protecting a sheet. Documents To Go from Dataviz is a commonly-recommended app that supports spreadsheets, but I don't know if they support passwording.

    Hi there,
i have Q i have excel file it need to be block with password. Could you please explain how i make password protect to Excel document
    Thanks

On the File menu, click Save As.
On the Tools menu, click General Options.
Do either or both of the following:
If you want users to enter a password before they can view the workbook, type a password in the Password to open box, and then click OK.
If you want users to enter a password before they can save changes to the workbook, type a password in the Password to modify box.
NOTE   Unlike passwords you specify in the Password to open box, passwords you specify in the Password to modify box are not encrypted. These passwords are only meant to give specific users permission to modify workbook data. For optimal password security, it's best to assign both passwords. An encrypted password to access the workbook, and one to provide specific users with permission to modify its content. IMPORTANT   Use strong passwords that combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords don't mix these elements. Strong password: Y6dh!et5. Weak password: House27. Use a strong password that you can remember so that you don't have to write it down.
If you want to use a different encryption type, click Advanced, click the type you want in the Choose an encryption type list, and then click OK.
If needed, specify the number of characters you want in the Choose a key length box.
NOTE   Document property encryption is enabled by default for most encryption types and providers. It prevents unauthorized users from viewing summary and custom file properties (such as the author or any custom file information) in theProperties dialog box. When users right-click the password-protected file, and then click Properties, information won't be available on the Summary tab and Customtab. Authorized users, however, can open the file and view all file properties (Filemenu, Properties command). To disable document property encryption, clear theEncrypt document properties check box.
    Click OK.
When prompted, retype your passwords to confirm them.
    Click Save.
If prompted, click Yes to replace the existing workbook.
NOTE   You can also secure a workbook with a password on the Security tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu, Options command).

  • How do i password protect a pages document?

i have a document that i created in pages.  it is a worksheet for brides (we are wedding photographers).  i use to have the document set up so when i email the document to a client, they can read the questions/timeline but cannot edit my text.  i have cells in tables that they can answer in.  the cells were grey in color.  the way i did this was by maybe putting a password on the document (which left the area grey for them to respond in).  but i cannot remeber how i did this.  i'm wondering if anyone knows what i'm talking about and/or how to do it.

Password protection prevents a document from being opened without the password.
Locking an object (such as a text box or table) prevents the object of its contents from being altered without first unlocking the object. No password protection is available for this, though, so the recipient could easily unlock the object and change its content.
At least one of Adobe's PDF applications offers the features you want—non-editable base document with fields that can be filled by the user, then saved and the file returned.

    Barry

  • How do I password-protect a PDF document that doesn't let me change the security settings?

I want to password-protect my PDF document (so when I email it, it can only be opened/read by intended recipients as it contains confidential/sensitive information) but when I go into document security, I'm unable to change the Security Method (which is currently set to 'No Security' - not by me).  There's a 'show details' icon but it's grey so I can't click on it.  What can I do to protect this document from being opened by non-intended recipients?

Ah, yes, I'm using Adobe Reader!  That makes sense.  Thanks so much for your reply.  At the moment, I scan Word documents into my computer and they're automatically converted to PDFs.  If I had Adobe Acrobat on my computer, and scanned in documents, would they open in Reader automatically or could I open them in Acrobat and therefore add password protection?

  • Applying Password-protection for Numbers files?

It looks great -- at first view. I grabbed my standard Excel file with all my misc. stuff in it, and hit the first snag. It was password-protected, so Numbers wasn't going to let me import it. Okay, that makes sense. So I figure out how to unprotect the file and manage to get it into Numbers. But when I went to apply a password requirement to open it, no joy.
This seems to be a no-brainer to me, a must-have feature. But the Help tool couldn't find anything on it. If it truly isn't supported then what was supposed to be the Red Letter Day of finally getting rid of the last Microsoft applications is going to have to be delayed until Apple releases an update.
    Ideas?

    - 1 - remove the protection

Yes, but that is not the case I am talking about. You talk about a sender who uses a Mac and knows that the receiver may have problems opening his files.
I am talking about a PC user who sends out encrypted MS Office documents in the belief that all the recipients have MS Office.
Example: Let's assume that you work for one of the big companies in Sophia Antipolis or for Carrefour in Antibes. Their management asks all the employees if they can read MS Office files. Everyone who says "yes" gets a confidential encrypted Excel file with pension calculations mailed to them. The other ones get the form in paper format. If you have iWork, you will have to wait for the paper version to arrive. You will have to fill it in on paper and you will have to verify the calculations manually. In some cases there may not even be a paper version available.
And I am talking about the Mac user who wants to send protected data to a PC user. As the PC User cannot open a Mac disk image, the only solution I can see for an iWork user is an encrypted PDF, and that one will not be editable by the receiver.
I am not saying that Apple has a duty to fulfill those requirements or that Apple should promote MS Office as a format. I am only saying that as long as iWork does not support password protection, some of iWork's users will have this kind of problems.
But maybe we are not giving the same meaning to "file protection".
For me it means "keep it from others view" aka "access denied"
Maybe, for you, it means "don't give the ability to edit it" aka "read only"
We give exactly the same meaning to the expression "file protection".

  • Password Protect a Pages document

How can I set a password protect on a document when saving it?

Another method is to save it as a password locked PDF.
    From your open Document, Print,
    click on the PDF dropdown
    Save as PDF
Click Security Options and set a password.
    Save.
Whether this suits your needs I don't know. I thought I'd throw it in there.

How do I print a Numbers document on my Mac?  All I get is the heading!

    Hi L,
What do you see after Menu > File > Print?
Are you using Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09) or Numbers 3.1?
Please reply with a screen shot of a small part of your screen (large shots are often difficult to read).
    To take a screen shot,
    1. hold down the shift and command keys, then type 4. The cursor will change to crosshairs. Release the shift and command keys.
    2. Drag over that part of your screen then release the mouse/trackpad. A screen shot will appear on your desktop.
    3. In a reply to a message, click on the camera icon in the Toolbar above your reply and
    4. Choose File > Choose > Insert Image.
If this does not work, Close the Insert Box (red cross on the top right) and go back to Step 3. Camera icon sometimes needs a wake-up call, but works the second time.
Remove any personal details before taking the screen shot.

    Ian.

  • How do I close a numbers document without closing the entire app?

Can anyone tell me how I can close a numbers document without closing the entire app? i.e. go back to the folders display page - is this even possible?

It is not a bug, but a new feature.<br />
Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825).
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or other menus like the Edit menu (Alt+E) and Bookmarks menu (Alt+B) and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.
*[https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=626825 bug 626825] - Hide redundant menu commands unless the user invokes the menu using the keyboard (make use of the openedWithKey attribute)
