How to reset second hand iMac without installation disc?

Hi,
I recently purchased a second hand 24" iMac from 2007.
How is ist possible to reset it without installation disc of snow leopard?s there any possibility to reset the system having installed Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
As I own also a MacbookPro from 2009, is it possible to reset also the iMac using the disc of my Macbook,
or is it possible to restore it using my apple Id, with the purchased Mountain Lion / Mavericks via internet recovery.
Thank you for your quick answers,

Ok, so I will call a local store to see if they have one left for me!
Thank you
Brick and mortar stores will not carry the disc, you can get it online on Apple's online store. If you are in the USA the link is:

  • How to Reset Second Hand Mac Mini?

I'm about to purchase a second hand mac mini from ebay. It's the MD387LL/A model. I've verified that it is still under the one year warranty.
How do I reset the mac mini so that:
I get a factory fresh install so it's like new
The one year warranty will be in my name/appleID
I can purchase an AppleCare extended warranty and apply it to this unit that I'm purchasing.
Any advice? Am I going to need the previous owner to do anything to it? Or can I do this on my own without their help?
    Thanks!

I baught second hand iMac and having trouble to reset to factory setting Help pls

The previous owner left a Recovery HD partition on the drive. You cannot use it because it will only install a version of OS X that is tied to that persons Apple ID. You cannot use his/her Apple ID nor reinstall his/her copy of OS X. You must start, literally, from scratch.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How do I install CS5 on new iMac without a disc drive, if remote installation isn't working?

I purchased CS5 for my laptop (Macbook Pro 2007 I believe) and now have the newest iMac without a disc drive.  I have tried remote installation, but it did not work.  I attempted to copy the installation files onto a USB and then transfer them, however, the iMac then prompts me to insert the installation cd.  How can I install it?  Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I was signed in with download assistant, no just in at adobe.com... I've tried different perferences and settings but when I click on the links nothing seems to happen. I've been messing around with this for a few hours now and it dawned on me that it may have something to do with my internet. I live outside the city- totally nice for gardening, totally terriable for internet thus I have a verizon data plan and not unlimited internet, I think possibly verizon is shutting it down because of restrictions I have on my data. This type of thing also happened when I upgraded to Mavericks. The file itself was larger than my month's data so it seemed like it wouldn't initiate the download... I don't know for sure if it is the same problem here but if you're telling me that you are having more successful results than I am that might be the reason.
I'll take my computer to work or to my mom's house or somewhere where I can have unlimited access and see if I have any better success.
Thanks so much for all your help!

See the post by R-C-R and the others. If the disc you have IS the grey install disk for your machine you should be able to install it without the direct use of a password. If it is some other disk for OSX not so.
It is not clear if you are trying to install the correct way. That is to boot up the machine holding down the c key. That boots from the disk and a sort of desktop comes up, you make some menu choices and wait a while as the OS on the disk is installed. You then install third party apps and configure wireless or such.
The above pre-supposes you can get the install disk for OSX into the machine and you don't say if you can even boot up to the desktop without the disk and so allow yourself to insert the thing. Can you? If you can that means the former owner's OS install and maybe some other things of theirs are in there and the wise move would be to clear the HD and start from fresh. That involves more than you directly ask for.
There is a way to get a disk into the machine (other things being well) even if you cannot get to the normal desktop. That involves the use of a 'Single User' start up and a couple of command line entries. 'Single User' start up has it's risks especially for a novice, but I did use it recently to get a disk into a Mac and boot from it to install the OS as you want to do, when a builder had cut the house power and nothing else was working. In that instance we had no worries about the existing user data and configurations so chose to re-install keeping the same settings and only replaced the system proper
Tell us more and we can help. Remember what Roam said about an Open Firmware Password. That would stop you getting to a Single User start up.
Your last post asked about a 'newer disk'. The first answer is yes. Get Panther but first be sure you have a functioning machine with a functioning OS before you spend money on an UPGRADE.

  • HT201240 I've forgotten my administrator password and can't download software. can anyone advise how to reset a new password without having the original?

I've forgotten my administrator password and can't download software. can anyone advise how to reset a new password without having the original?

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

Your phone has "told" you it was dying; you didn't listen.  You ignored the broken power button, you ignored the frequent crashing, and now your battery is probably dead.  And despite this, you never thought to import the "important" pictures and data off your phone?
If you cant turn on the phone or get it recognized in iTunes, there's no way to access the data.

  • If one buys pages , can i download it and run it on my desktop AND my laptop or do I have to buy it twice? its only me using one machine at any one time. (Have recently purchased a second hand iMac and secondhand Mac book pro 17")

If one buys pages , can i download it and run it on my desktop AND my laptop or do I have to buy it twice? its only me using one machine at any one time. (Have recently purchased a second hand iMac and secondhand Mac book pro 17")

I have a couple or dozen or so excel spread shheets that I use origionally created in M/s Excel v.5.0 ( yup some time ago although have run and updated them on office 2007  perfectly etc.  AND numerous word files that I refer to. I have also run these files using Open Office on a small 13" mac Book Pro. successfully.
I have now decided to change my personal use computers > macs.
Ok, so in summary then i think you kind guys are saying:
    (1) That if i buy Pages & Numbers or even iworks which is Apple's suite of such programs i believe, then I can download and Run these apps /programs on each my personal  mac computers whether they be my second hand Imac or second hand 17" mac book pro. ( basically i have purchased these so that I am converting to the "Apple Side" and can use the Imac desktop while at home and Mac book pro when out and about) , under the one purchase and one licence.
    (2) The decision as to whether to Buy M/s Office for Mac v Pages & Numbers or the iworks suite is that if I have lots of MACROs in my existing files written in M/soft that it would be better to go for M/s Office for Mac. I understand that Macros are the automated thingys ?? I have formulae obviously inthe fairly simple spread sheets but not aware of any macros. So I guess that means ~ I could purchase either product by the sounds of it. yes? Are there any other obvious things i need to consider?
    Other INFO:
Also, I have snow leopard on one system and Maveric ( pretty impresive!) on the other. i am slightly reluctant to upgrade the snow leopard o/s as I would have to upgrade the paralles software and probably Windows software as well in order to run an old Kitchen, drawing program that I use occaisionally. I know that one should be able to partition / and Boot camp but I really don't want to do that. I feel at this stage its not worth payingtoi up grade all these bits of software for something I rarely use. But I am open to anyones comments / views.
    Thanks.

  • Second hand iMac 20" A1224 issue

as above, i have bought a second hand iMac. i have used disk utilities to erase any previous data but have an issue reinstalling. if i use my apple ID i get the error message regarding my Id having not purchased Lion before. now i just have a large paperweight unless i can get past this step. i fully intend on installing mountain lion, having bought an itunes card specifically for this. i was going to buy it on my mac mini and then use my ID to set up the iMac but my mac mini can not support mountain lion so, help?  it is obvious that the serial number is still linked to a previous owner as i cant add to my products in apple ID. what can i do? thanks in advance.

I do not think you can just install Lion or Mt. Lion from a completely erased and formatted drive .
I believe you need to purchase retail copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard first, install the OS from disc, then use Software Update to update it to OS X 10.6.8, then try installing OS X 10.7 Lion.
Format the drive using Disk Utility, format as HFS+ extended format (journaled) and use the GUID partition scheme.
You can purchase Snow Leopard from Apple here
