How to Set Up Time Capsule With Airport Extreme and Airport Express

Just got a new 1TB Time Capsule. I want it to be the main base station for my network. I already have a network set up with an older Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express to extend it. I am thinking that rather than setting up the Time Capsule to "join" the old network, the best approach is to disconnect the Airport Extreme and Airport Express and reset them. Then set up the Time Capsule as a brand new network and bring the reset Aiport Extreme and Express onto the new network as if my original network never existed.
Is that the right approach or am I complicating it? Can I just join the Time Capsule to the existing network and still make it the main base station for the network?

I'd first use AirPort Utility to "Save a Copy As" of your AirPort Extreme settings. Then disconnect it, connect the Time Capsule in its place, and use AirPort Utility's "Import" function to read those settings. (Both of those functions are under AirPort Utility's "File" menu.) You may have to adjust a few settings. Once you have the Time Capsule working as you want, you can reconfigure your AirPort Extreme unit as you wish.

how to set up time capsule with BT Infinity

The easiest and sure way is to use bridge on the TC as the method of connection. The TC then becomes a device in your network and gets its IP from the main router that I presume BT supply.
    Method is,
    1. Plug the TC WAN port into the BT supplied modem by ethernet.
    2. Plug the computer you are using for the setup into the TC by ethernet.
    3. Run the airport utility .. go to internet tab on the top menu..
In the bottom option, Connection Sharing choose off (bridged mode)
    4. Go to the wireless page and setup wireless connection as you like it.. using whichever band you want. And make sure security is set to the highest setting, wpa2 personal. Put in a decent wireless passkey.
    5. Press the update and fix whatever else the TC will show as needing fixing.. usually security stuff.
    6. You can then disconnect the ethernet and connect by wireless if you want. Any port on the TC will now be a LAN port, including WAN.
This is assuming BT supply a wireless router with built in vdsl/other type of modem. If so you normally will not be able to bridge the modem, unless BT are using pppoe authentication which they haven't in the past.
If you really need to use the TC as a router then you will need to work out an alternative method. You can double NAT by placing the TC in the DMZ of the BT router if that is an option. It is not without issues in general.

  • HOW TO SET UP time capsule with time machine?

I have not been successful in setting up time capsule with the time machine, can someone give me steps to follow?

What part are you having problems with?  You need to make sure File Sharing is enabled on the Time Capsule (which is done in AirPort Utility).  Then you just connect to the Time Capsule either wirelessly or via ethernet cable and when you go to Time Machine setup your computer should recognize your Time Capsule as a valid storage for Time Machine backups.

  • How to set up time capsule with BT home hub 4.0 & Openreach

    Idiots guide needed.
My TimeCapsule (year old model) had been running well from my BT Openreach box (without using the Home Hub 4.0) but recently had issues with connection dropping - BT said they've sorted out their end and can't see any remaining issues and can't offer me any more support if I'm not using the Home Hub 4.0
I reset the TC to run straight from the Openreach Box  still have issues with wi-fi dropping in and out (both on ethernet and wi-fi).
    Can I:....
    1)     set up Time Capsule running from BT Home Hub 4.0 which itself runs from BT Openreach white box (thus continuing to get support from BT)
or should i go back to

I have an existing wirelss network using airport express. I want to upgrade to time capsule and use the A/P express upstairs. I dont want to delete the existing network.

  • How to set up time capsule with router

I have a router N 300 and would like to buy time capsule but I did not find any information how to set up bouth devises. Thanks

You can always bridge the Time Capsule.. it is easy. Once bridged the time capsule will no longer route. All routing is then handled by the original router.. N300 (which could be belkin or netgear and maybe other people call then N300). It will still work as a wireless access point.. unless you turn it off, a switch with WAN now allocated to LAN, and a network drive.
    Just look up bridge.
But there are other ways to do things. You could replace the N300, unless it is a modem.. in which case you can bridge that and use pppoe client on the TC (if you ISP does pppoe).

  • How to set up time capsule with att uverse

So I'm thinking about getting a time capsule for my home network. I have several apple (Macbook pro, Ipad, Iphone) products and i think it would be convennient to have. The only problem I think I will be facing is seting up the time capsule along side with my Att uverse 2wire router. So i have several questions:
    1) I have wireless receivers for my tvs that receive the signals from the main uverse 2wire modem/router. Now I read online that you can turn of the wireless router function of the main 2wire modem/router and just turn it in to a modem (from what I understood at least). So my question is if I turn of the wirless function of the main uverse 2wire router, will that affect me watching tv with the wireless recivers that uverse provided me???
    2) I know I can probably go around the issue on question 1 by putting the time capsule in to bridge mode, but will I loose any functions on the time capsule by doing so? Will accessing the hard drive be possible if its on bridge mode?.
    3) If getting a time capsule is not worth it bacause there is no way around the issues in the first two questions then is there another product that I can use that might be better for my situation?
Im no IT genius but I know my way around so I am comfertable trying to set it up I just need some guidence. Any help will be greatly appreciated it!!

So my question is if I turn of the wirless function of the main uverse 2wire router, will that affect me watching tv with the wireless recivers that uverse provided me???
The other receivers will not work if you turn off the wireless on the Uverse gateway.
I know I can probably go around the issue on question 1 by putting the time capsule in to bridge mode, but will I loose any functions on the time capsule by doing so?
The Time Capsule will need to connect to the Uverse gateway using an Etherent cable. The Time Capsule will be able to provide another wireless network when it is set up this way, but it will not be able to provide an additional Guest Network.
Will accessing the hard drive be possible if its on bridge mode?.
    Yes
If getting a time capsule is not worth it bacause there is no way around the issues in the first two questions then is there another product that I can use that might be better for my situation?
This really depends on how many Macs that you need to back up. The Time Capsule can back up multiple Macs on a network. If you don't need that type of capability, then it would be much simpler, and a lot less expensive to connect a hard drive directly to your Mac and back up the Mac that way.
Half of the cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in a wireless router, so if you don't plan to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, you will be paying for features that you do not use.

  • How to set up time capsule with ethernet?

How do I set up a Time Capsule using just ethernet? I have to do a complete backup (1 TB) (AGAIN!) and it will take forever using WIFI. And the instruction manual even says that the first complete backup should be done using just ethernet, --but you know what, it does NOT say how in the world to do that.
I thought I had stumbled into a few minutes ago, as I had turned off the WIFI and just had it connected to my MacPro just using an ethernet cable, and yet Time Machine was able to find it and start backing up to it ... but that shut off my internet connection! I couldn't log into this site or any other site until I pulled the power plug on the Time Capsule.
I have FIOS internet connected to my ethernet 2 plug and the Time Capsule connected to my ethernet 1 plug -- would it help if I reversed them?
This thing is seriously fouled up. Should have just bought a Firewire hard drive.

    Your TC setup is wrong.
You should bridge it.. If using Lion.. you poor guy.. expect endless networking issues..
This is not caused by the TC.. guess where the issue is??
To bridge you need to load in 5.6 utility because the one in Lion is useless.
Then see these instructions.. particularly the last bit for how to bridge.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4074627?tstart=30
Then plug the computer directly into the TC and all should work fine.. don't forget to turn off wifi otherwise it might slow it down still.

  • How to set up Time Capsule with no internet or router wirelessly?

Hi, I would like to know if it is at all possible to setup a Time Capsule wireless without the use of Internet or a router altogether.  I want to wireless set it up directly to a an Apple MacBook Pro.
    Thank you.

If you decide to do this, the simplest way to accomplish your goal would be to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule to get it back to default settings using this Apple support document:
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Then open AirPort Utility 5.6 and click Continue to follow the guided setup to "Create a wireless network".
You will need to click "ignore" for messages that you see telling you that you do not have an Ethernet cable connected to the WAN port and also that you do not have an Internet connection.

  • Setting up Time Capsule with Fairpoint DSL and AT&T Micro Cell

Looking for help here. Have a Time Capsule, which as worked before, and have just moved. Want to hook up to Fairpoint DSL and AT&T Micro Cell. Not having any luck. Suggestions/recommendations/graphs/drawings/CAM-CAD mock ups would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, Bob! If I may impose on you a little bit more, would you be able to guide me a little bit in terms of the setup?
Would I need to connect my time capsule directly to the router for first time set up?
If so, would I have to keep it connected to the router all the time after the first time set up, or can I keep it in another room?
Our wireless network was created back when we were a Windows household, so we still control it using Network Magic on an old laptop.
I unlocked the network (using Network Magic) when I tried to set up the Time Capsule (wirelessly, and before calling Apple), and after entering the network password my macbook recognized the TC and I got the good little green light on the TC. As soon as I locked up the network, I got the flashing amber light on the TC and airport utility couldn't find it anymore (using Airport utility version 6.1)... I unlocked the network again, the light turned green. I locked it back up, the light started flashing amber again...
Thanks, I really appreciate your help!

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • HT4628 Intermittent reception when streaming music via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. Is this a problem with the Extreme?

i get intermittent reception when I stream music from I Tunes via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac.  The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?

  • How do airport extreme and airport express routers connect to modems?

I've heard that airport extreme and airport express are wifi routers, not modems. if they are routers, they need to connect to my modem. Do they connect using a wire or wirelessly?

It must be connected to your modem with an Ethernet cable.

  • Airport Extreme and Airport Express conflict and failure

I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple and still could not get my Airport Extreme and Airport Express to function. My Apple TV failed as well:
    * Connected AEX through Airport Utility to internet. Airport Utility replaced my old configuration on my LinkSystem router. Green light.
    * Checked Apple TV. No connection available. Unplugged cable modem, waited 1 minute and tried again. Apple TV connected. No problem.
    * Flashing amber light on Airport Express for Airtunes. Does not show up in wireless device list. I call Apple.
    * Reset Express. Still no signal. Connect via Ethernet cable. Reconfigure. Green Light. Music works.
    * Check internet connection, in order. Apple TV fails. No connection to server.
    * Apple TV reset. No connection. No wireless network found.
    * Reset Airport Express. Reconfigure channel specifications. No connection with ATV or Airport Express.
    * Disconnect Airport Express. Reconfigure. With ATV disconnected I get Airport Express back. Green light but this time no music. Remote speakers appear on itunes, but no music is transmitted.
    * Did a total wireless reset on Extreme, and now both Express and ATV are not working.
Frustrated and dissapointed I disconnected everything put back my 5 year old Linksys router and within 15 seconds both ATV and Airport Express worked flawlessly.
How can this happen? What is wrong with this device? It is my second one in a week. The first one made no wireless connection to my Mac at all.
After sulking for hours I tried again, this time leaving the Express out of the equation and reconfiguring the ATV to take over airtunes. After a reset it did fine. Now I have a pure n signal running at 5hz. ATV works again. So does internet.
Any suggestions? Is there something I did not try?
I tried the Firewall trick, the accept all incoming connections trick, the disabling of the iv6 trick, the join a wireless connection trick, and everything else Apple Care could think of.

Maybe I was not clear enough on my post and configurations,
I had a Linksys before I purchased the airport extreme. My airport express joined the Linksys network for the purpose of airtunes. This worked flawlessly from day one.
Airport Extreme asked in the utility to take over an existing network or replace a router. If you chose this option it adopts all passwords, wpa/2 configurations for security and such.
I chose this option thinking that since it is an apple product it would take over everything and work. My airport express had origianlly been set to join my old Linksys network. Since the airport extreme took over this configuration it should work.
Apple stated many times that there seemed to be a conflict and kept asking me about the placement of my airport extreme.
My Linksys was never part of a bridge or a network within a network. It was removed before the Extreme was ever turned on.
After all the problems and hours of trying with Apple, i find it funny that all I had to do to restore eveything was plug my old Linksys back in and conect all the cables, and bam....it worked.
So what is wrong with the airport extreme, or is there something wrong with itunes 8 and its interface with the express? For whatever reason the extreme cannot make the express and my ATV work at the same time.

  • Difference between Airport Extreme and Airport Express

What is the difference between Airport Extreme and Airport Express? My son is home from college and would like to use his Macbook for an online class. So I need a wireless router and I would also like to be able to play our iTunes over multiple speaker locations with my home stereo. Which one of these could accomplish this. Thanks in advance.

If you can use just one device to both set up a WiFi network and connect to your stereo you have to use an Airport Express. If you have to use separate devices, for instance because your internet connection device and your stereo are not in the same location, you have to use an Express to stream to and you can use either an Express or an Extreme to set up the WiFi.
By the way you have to use an Express for each stereo you would like to connect.
