How to share files between two accounts on the same Macbook Pro???

Hi,
I have recently purchased a Macbook Pro and have created two accounts, one for me and one for my wife.
I have all the itunes music on my account and my wife wants to load some of the songs nto her Itunes on her account but I don't want to start copying files into the "shared folder" in the "users folder" which will obviously take up more room on my hard drive.
I have noticed that I can see my folders when she is logged in but the ones that she needs to access (like the music folder) have a red dot on them and when you double click on them it brings up the message "the folder "music" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient privileges".
Can anyone help me with these problems?
Please help me!!!

Hi, remember to set the ownership & permissions for files/folders if you want to be able to amend files or change them from both accounts. If a file is created in one account. it may only be viewed in the other account. but if you change the ownership & permissions from "read only" to "read and write" then files can be amended from both accounts. To get the info, simply click once on the folder or file then command-i to get the file/folders info. you can change things there. Permissions can only be change from the account the file/folder was created in.

Can you transfer files between two user accounts on the same MacBook Pro?
Specifically, I used the Migration Assistant to move music and photos from my old PC to my new MacBook.
Somehow, I missed the fact that it was creating a new user account when it was doing this.  So none of music and photos are in the user account I originally set-up.  Instead, all these files are now in a different account.
I'd like to consolidate all my files on the one user account and delete the other one.
Is this possible and, if so, how do I do it?
    Thank you.

you can crop files from one account to another using the Public Dropbox which every user account has.  Log into the user that has the files you want to move, then drag the folder you want to the new users' dropbox:
I suggest a small scale test on a few files first before moving gigabytes of files.

  • How do I share music between user accounts on the same computer?

My wife and I have separate user accounts on the same MacBook Pro so that we can both sync our phones to this computer. My account is the primary user account, and my iTunes library is stored in this account. My wife would like to put music on her iPhone so she can run, but I can't seem to access the music library thru her account. I know the files are all on the hard drive regardless, so I just need to know how I can make iTunes on my wife's account access the library that's there. I've tried the steps I could find on Apple's website, but I can't seem to make it work. I'm running the latest versions of everything - even tho the post says I'm running 10.9.1, I'm actually running 10.9.4

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.

There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • Can you share music between iTunes accounts on the same computer

Can you share music between iTunes accounts on the same computer? My kids iPods are under my account now with all of our shared music but they want their own iTunes accounts. I would like to transfer the music and apps that they purchased under my account to their new accounts... Is this posible?

Did you enable the display of system files and hidden files and folders?
by the way, how can i stop this from happening another time.
    Make a backup!
i had music there for over 6 years.
Well you must have updated iTunes once or twice in that time. Do you have some sort of "tidying" app that is supposed to clean "unnecessary" files. If so perhaps it is too aggressive.

  • Share an itunes between two separate accounts on the same macbook pro

My Partner and I share a macbook pro - we both have indidiual accounts.
Our itunes music is all showing on the iTunes in his account.
However, I log him out and then log into mine the iTunes is empty....
Is there a way that we can share the iTunes and the music purchased between our two accounts on our macbook without having to buy all the music again??
I am not very switched on with the syncing business and the only way I can see around it is to put all the music on a hard drive and then transfer it back onto my iTunes accounts - but I would consider that that method is a little outdated now?

  • Can I share files between two different networks at same location?

Until TWC can offer DOCSIS 3.0 later this year or next...
    - In my home I have a closet where all my audio, video and network come together.
    - I have two cable modems from Time Warner
    - Modem A goes to a WRT320N; 192.168.0.1
-- This router connects all my "heavy" downloads, ie. DirecTV receivers, Netflix, home server w/videos, gaming, etc.
    - Modem B goes to a E2000; 192.168.1.1
-- This router connects my everyday use computers so they don't suffer poor speeds from all the traffic on Modem A
My question is, how or can I somehow share files between these two routers without the need for hitting the modems? Obviously I can just push files over the Internet but I am doing it at a much slower speed due to upload restrictions on the modem.
Thank you for any help on this!

The easiest way would be to assign LAN IP 192.168.1.2 to the WRT320N and disable the DHCP server. Then assign static IP addresses in 192.168.1.* to all devices connected to the WRT at the moment, e.g. 192.168.1.10, 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.2, DNS 192.168.1.2 (or DNS servers of your ISP).
Now you can connect a LAN port of the WRT to a LAN port of the E2000. All DHCP clients get the IP address from the E2000 which will assign the E2000 as gateway, i.e. they use the E2000 for internet. All other devices will have static IP addresses and use the WRT as gateway.

  • Home Sharing - Can you share between two accounts on the same computer?

I haven't been able to find any info about this, but does home sharing allow you to share files between to different user accounts on the same computer? I have been struggling with trying to do this for years, and I'm really hoping this solves my problem.

This is true in a sense; you have to use the same itunes account to activate home sharing. BUT, you don't need to use the same itunes account for general use.
    Example:
My computer and iPhone has one itunes account.
My wife's computer and iPhone have a totally separate account.
I turned on Home Sharing on both machines using one account name and ID - mine.
Now she can see and copy my music and apps, etc. I can see and copy her music, apps, etc.
However, when she goes to the iTunes store, she still can buy and so forth *on her own account*. Same with her iPhone. And I can still do the same as well on my own account on my machine and phone.
The only limitation seems to be updating apps: If you copy apps over to another machine using Home Sharing and install them on another phone running another account, it works great. But you can't seem to update those copied apps, unless you log in on the phone or the computer it syncs up to with the account it came from.
Aside from that, the apps still work even when the computer it was copied to and the phone it was synced to are active on ANOTHER account.
The key is the setup - for Home Sharing. That needs to be one account, but otherwise it's business as usual.

  • Sharing between two accounts on the same Windows Vista PC

Is it possible to home share between two different accounts on the same computer?
On my son's account, iTunes for some reason won't connect to the iTunes Store.  So I would like to enable him to purchase stuff on my account and then use home share to access it.  We both use the same Apple ID at home.

By accident I came across a solution that may work for you. This works on a Mac but I think it should work in Windows as well.
On the Mac, if I log into a user account and launch iTunes and then use Fast User Switching to log into another account leaving iTunes running in the first account. I can then launch iTunes in the second account and access all the media stored in the first account's iTunes library using Home Sharing.
I believe Windows has the same ability that allows one user to log into their account while another user is already logged in. If so you may be able to do the same thing in Windows. I'm not sure what happens in Windows to running application when the second user logs in though. If applications are allowed to continue running then I don't see why this shouldn't work in Windows as well. If applications are paused then I can see this not working. The key here to to not log out of the first account therby forcing the applications to stop running.
The downside is that your son would first have to log into your account and launch iTunes before logging into his own account. If giving your son access to your account password is not ideal you could also create a third computer account that both of you have access to that would be used only to store and buy iTunes content. That account could be used as the sharing account that you both can have access to while logged into your own respective accounts.

  • Sharing itunes library  between two accounts on the same imac

We just got a 27" imac and my wife and I have our own log on accounts. We share our itunes library. I have moved our itunes library to the shared folder so both of us can see its contents and pointed itunes on both user accounts to that shared folder. But, if she or I purchase an app or music it doesn't go into that shared folder. So I have to copy and paste it into the shared folder. Am I missing something there should be an easier way? I just want us to share the music and iphone apps we purchase.
We are using the same itunes account on the same imac, we just have different user accounts on the imac. Thanks
