How to share USB superdrive?

I'm trying to share my Macbook air's USB superdrive with my iMac (the iMac's superdrive broke for the 3rd time in 2 years time). How can I do this?
I set my Macbook air to share it's external superdrive, but it doesn't shw up on my iMac as a remote drive. How can I do this? I read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287 and it doesn't provide the solution.

The superdrive is connected to a USB port on a cinema display, which on its turn is connected to the macbook air.
Your SuperDrive will need to be directly connected to your MacBook Air.  Unfortunately (and for reasons, which to this date years late, I have yet to understand) Apple has designed the SuperDrive to ONLY work with Macs which do not come with a built in SuperDrive.  There's some debate between it being something they've done with the USB ports or drivers... but regardless, it will only work plugged directly into the Air.
With the SuperDrive connected to the Cinema Display... can you see it with your Air?  This is a bit of a unique configuration and I haven't heard of anyone trying to use a USB SuperDrive this way.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • How To Share USB Devices Between Two Mac's?

I am musician and have several USB controllers that I would like to share between my Mac pro and my Macbook Pro. (drum pad, keyboard controller,USB midi interface etc.) I have seen several switches offered on the net, however they all seem to be for PC from what I have found really.
Belkin 7-Port Desktop USB Hub (F4U017) was recommended but the language in the the description does not mirror the same types of functions I am seeing mentioned in units made specifically for the PC. (ie "share USB devices between 2 computers.") Did I taint my mind by looking at the PC items first? Is it really as easy as to plug two Macs into the same USB hub and share their devices? Does anyone have a working solution they are using for this type of situation? How do you do it?
If I could share 7 USB devices between the two systems, I think I would be just this side close to Heaven in ease!
    thank you!
    Cheers,
    Marty

Thank you for the lead Direwolf, it felt like there might be a little more to it than just connecting to a hub. I just converted from PC about 8 months ago. Loving my macs!! A KVM switch I had not thought of that. I will look into. I read the wiki page and it seems like a kvm would replace the screen sharing feature the two machines can now use easy enough, only without using the cpu overhead to do it??? (i think is what I understood)
Does anyone have a model they are using and can recommend? (it's a jungle +out there+) I just did a quick search and found mostly kvm switches with 2-ports USB,. ... looking for seven, come on lucky seven! lol!
I will keep looking. In the mean time if readers have additional ideas, I will be very grateful! Cheers!

  • How to share USB drives from iMac to Macbook?

I have an iMac that has 2x500GB external USB 2.0 drives connected. I want to be able to access these drives via my Macbook as I have my entire Photo collections as well as iTunes on them.
I have turned on file sharing on both systems, I am able to connect form my Macbook to the iMac using:
    afp://imac.local
However it will only display the "Macintosh HD" and "<Username>" mounts, that's all.
I am also authenticating using my iMac administrator account.
If anyone can help, please fill me in. I am also assuming this can be done, I mean its simply 2 USB drives being shared, shouldn't be too dificult.
    Thanks a lot

If all you need to do is share your iPhotos and iTunes libraries, then there is an easier way. Open each apps preferences, click on the Sharing icon in the respective toolbars, check the box to share the library with all local machines on your network.
Otherwise, what you've done appears to be working. You say the shared machine is mounting. You should then be able to access the mounted disk volume. When you log in to the 'server' computer you must use a username and password of an existing account on the 'server' machine otherwise you will be logged in as 'guest' and have limited access.

  • How to share external USB drive connected to airport time capsule

I have a 4TB Seagate USB Hard Drive connected to my Airport Time Capsule.  The Time Capsule connected to a newer iMac running Maverick.
I use the Time Capsule for Time Machines Backups and as a Router, as it was designed for.
I want to use the external Seagate drive to share content with other devices (Mac, IOS, Windows) on my home network
Problem:  I cannot figure out how to SHARE the external Seagate drive so that any other devices can see it.
Steps tried:  Go to System Preferences, Sharing, and I am unable to add this Seagate drive to list of sharable objects.  It is grayed out.

the drive is formatted as AppleShare. Is that a potential problem?
No, that is the correct setting if you want to share out the drive.
Finally, when I run Disk Utility I don't see the Seagate drive (nor the Time Capsule) at all.
Remember that the Time Capsule is a network drive. Any other drive connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule is also a network drive.
Disk Utility cannot be used on a network drive.  It only works on a drive that is directly attached to a Mac.  If you need to partition the USB drive or something similar, you will need to connect it directly to your Mac for the operation.
Otherwise, everything looks correct in AirPort Utility.

  • How to get an Apple USB Superdrive to be recognized in Windows 7 VM

    Hello,
I have just installed Win 7 VM under FMWare Fusion 7.x, and cannot get Windows to recognize the USB external Superdrive.  I go up under Virtual Machine and click to connect, it says it will and do I want it to always do this?  I click YES.  And nothing.  When I look under USB and Bluetooth drives, SATA is the one selected, but USB is not a choice.  Just SATA, IDE, and SCSI!!
If I unplug the drive and plug it back in several times, MAYBE it will be recognized, and sucks the DVD in.  Once it actually let me install software.  But that was it.
I had it set to ask what to do, so I could pick windows or mac, and it did to that, so I know it is recognizing the drive is plugged in.  I then set it to always be windows, but does not matter.
I got error saying device requires installation of Apple Bootcamp driver disk in the virtual machine.  NOT sure why, since I am not using Bootcamp at all.  However, I went thru the motions in Bootcamp Asst, downloaded the driver from the machine with the VM, and saved it to a thumb drive.  Relaunched the VM, went into the thumb drive to set up, and it comes back with error, this cannot be installed on this system.  What?????
So I am in a loop right now.  REALLY need the VM to recognize the external Apple Superdrive, so need to know how to accomplish this.
VMWare Tooks are installed, and VMWare is up to date.  As is Windows.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    Hi,
As mentioned in my initial post, it's an Apple USB Superdrive.  A generic drive works, but the Apple one does not, or works sporadically.  Seems to me that Win 7 does not have the right driver for it, but no idea how to get it.....
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • How do I install an apple usb SuperDrive with my macbook that already has a superdrive but doesnt work?

I bought a macbook off of a friend but the CD drive to the computer doesnt work and was broke awhile ago. I needed to install some software onto this computer so I bought the Apple USB SuperDrive thinking it would work, but later finding out that it is only compatible with macs that dont have a superdrive built in. An Apple support technician told me that it could be done through a process, but she couldn't help me with. So it would be greatly appreciated if someone can help me with this problem. Thank You!

There is some useful information here about the process mentioned:
    http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2011/10/how-to-make-the-macbook-air-superdrive-work-w ith-any-mac/
Of course you need to be very careful with any use of Terminal.

  • HT5630 how do I burn a dvd using usb superdrive to mac or itunes?

How do I burn my dvds onto either my Macbook air or onto itunes using external USB superdrive please??

"Burn my DVD" refers to the process of taking data FROM the Macbook and copying them TO the DVD, not potentially the other way around, as you have asked the question.
Are you wanting to copy (rip) movies from a DVD and place them into iTunes?
                        -or-
Are you wanting to copy (burn) a movie from a digital copy on your computer to the DVD?
The way you have asked the question makes no sense.
