How to shift from ERP tester to SAP Functional Consultant?

Hi friends,
I'm currently working as a Software tester and have worked with ERP applications(Not SAP) for more that 2.5 years now. I do have a decent domain knowledge of ERP at present.
I want to learn SAP and make a career as a functional consultant.
My question is:  If i do a course in one of the functional modules of SAP will i be able to get a job in SAP with my prior experience of ERP?
Thanks and Regards,
Arjun

Dear Mr.Arjun Nair,
Welcome to the world of SAP. Congrats for choosing sap as your career platform.
I appreciate your interest on SAP ERP.
Based on your interest you can choose any module ( technical / functional ).Each module has its own importance in real time.
If you want learn more about any / preffered module, you can always access help.sap.com which will give you a list of results and among them you can choose whichever link you want to start studying on that subject.
Based on your research choose a right module which suits you better.
It might depends on your Interest also, Like if you are interested more on Programming side then think about Technical module ABAP.
Or if your interest is more on Functional side ( Requires business process knowledge on various / any industries & configuration skills in ERP ).
Based on your experience I  believe that the  below functional modules will be more suitable for people who has some Business / Domain / experience . Just think & try to follow the SAP Help to take a right decision.
MM – MATERIAL MANAGEMENT  ( More about Purchasing related activities  / Goods receipts / Inventory Management / vendor management )
SD – SALES & DISTIBUTION ( All sales related activities)
PP – Production Planning
Wish you all the best.

    Dear All,
    I am shifting towards SAP functional consulting job. I want to know the Pro's and con's of SAP functional consultant job.

    You can unload a lot of work on the technical consultant / developer and let him join the logical dots of what you're trying to design, and you get paid 50% more on top, now how's that?
    All you need to do is look business and talk business.

    P.S. wait, I'm a technical consultant, arrrgh...

  • What is the future of SAP Functional Consultant?

    Helo All.
    Can anyone guide me regarding the future of SAP Functional consultants in the wake of impending technologies such as eSOA, Netweaver?
    How these new technologies will change dynamics of job market for functional consultants especially MM and SD?
    What new skills will be required by functional consultants?
    Regards.

    Hi Anay,
    Future of SAP Will Remain Same as of what we have now. Coz Somany Companies Converting To SAP Hugely. And the Core Modules like MM,SD,FI. Will have their Own Significance and will Have the Same Impact what we have now.
    SO Dont Worry About New Technologies. New Technologies will Helps to the Companies to get the Best From Technical Prospective also Helps to the Functional.
    I Dont Think These New technologies Will Change the Functional Market.
    As a Consultant it is better to have knowledge and expert in multiple modules. Nowadays Companies are hireing Multi Specal Functional Consultants.

  • SAP Functional consultant roles with S/4 HANA

    Hi
    in the current scenario there is huge role for SAP functional consultants, along with ABAPers and BASIC guys, in implementations,
    with SAP S/4 HANA (both on premise and cloud) would there be similar roles available ?
    we can see there is some talk about ABAP in HANA on premise, but could not find much information about the SAP Functional consultants roles in SAP S4 HANA (both on-premise and cloud)
    what do you guys thing, would there still be a IMG in S4 HANA and there will be great needed for SAP functional consultants in new SAP Implements with S4HANA

    thanks Richard,
    for taking time to clear some doubts, it will help alot,
    so its the customer who will drive this....
    if every customer moves to cloud (both HEC or public cloud) - SAP Functional consultants will be obsolete by 2025
    even if there are some onPrem, due to pre-packaged S/4, there will be very less work
    so the 40K odd SAP Functional consultants careers would be ended by 2025

  • Sql for sap functional consultant

    Hi sap consultants,
    I have a query related to sql for functional consultant.
    My question is what is the use of sql for functional consultant and what is the future prospect
    after learning it, means will it help in career growth in sap and also to build my candidature strong.
    Please suggest me regarding this.will highly appreciate your replies.
    Thanks in advance.

    Prafulla,
    Have a look at some of the blogs collected under SAP Career Blog Links. Your best route to becoming an SAP Functional specialist is to work your way into the support group of the company in which you already work. Experience is more important than the certificate. Get your experience supporting SAP as an SAP CRM specialist first, THEN get your certificate.
    If you try to do the reverse, you're signing up for a lot of heartache (see blogs in the previous link page). Whatever you do... do NOT quit your job to sign up for training/certification on the hopes that you'll find a job easily after you are certified. End user experience is better than nothing, but does not necessarily "count" as experience when you're trying to get a job for the first time as a functional specialist.
    Only AFTER you've been a specialist for a while does the end user experience add clout to your credentials as you can say " I've experienced the FULL spectrum of SAP" while folks who never had the end user experience seem somewhat lacking by comparison.
    So *eventually*, end user experience + specialist experience + certification = more than the sum of the parts.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,

  • How to CATCH error from call to standard SAP Function Module

    Please, is it possible to catch the following error with the TRY CATCH ENDTRY construct?
    From a custom program, am calling CS_BOM_EXPL_MAT_V2.
    Several nested calls in, Form STL_DATEN_HOLEN (LCSS4F1I) calls FM CS_ALT_SELECT_MAT.
    However, that call is missing the CALL_INVALID Exception.
    CS_ALT_SELECT_MAT is raising CALL_INVALID, but since it was not included in the FM call, the RAISE_EXCEPTION runtime error is issued.
    I added a TRY CATCH ENDTRY construct around the call in the custom program using CATCH cx_root, but the program is still short dumping.
    All the research I have done has been misleading...some articles indicate all errors should be caught, some indicate only catchable runtime errors can be caught, others are not quite clear.
    So, I would like to find out if, in this scenario, it is even possible to catch this error and avoid the short dump.
    I will open a message to see about having the SAP code fixed as soon as I get authorization to do so, (as well as fix the data causing the issue in the first place), but in the meantime, I would like to handle it in my code if possible.
    ECC 6.0
    Thanks for any information!
    Kind Regards,
    Deb
    Edited by: Debra Garner on Jan 26, 2012 5:19 PM

    Hi Debra,
    You cannot catch non class based exceptions using the TRY/ENDTRY.  You might also find no luck with help from SAP since the FM in question 'CS_BOM_EXPL_MAT_V2' is not released for customer use.  The best bet is to examine why the error is occurring and figure out what needs to be done to fix it and/or avoid it in the future.

    Please suggest;
    Thank you.

    Hi Kimi,
    HANA is related to database, there are basically two types of mode in HANA, one is called HANA developer who developes model and another is HANA technical who configure, install and monitor all these stuffs. When it  comes to learn HANA without having prior knowledge of BW/BI , yes this will gives you an advantage if you have prior knowledge of BW/BI , but its not mandatory for you because you have so rich experience in another modules, so i will suggest you to please see these threads which might help you at some extent.

  • How to convert from Grayscale to single color channel

    I hope that someone here might be able to help. I am writing an application which loads in color channels separately, to be merged by the application The images are multi-page TIFF files. The trouble that I am running into is that the application loads the images into grayscale, so when I merge the channels, they are merged as grayscale, not as the correct colors.
    I use the following on each color channel to load them in:
    public static BufferedImage[] loadTiff(File multiPageFile, int colour) {
        BufferedImage[] img = null;
        ArrayList<BufferedImage> tmp = new ArrayList<BufferedImage>();
        try {
            SeekableStream stream = new FileSeekableStream(multiPageFile);
            String[] names = ImageCodec.getDecoderNames(stream);
            ImageDecoder dec = ImageCodec.createImageDecoder(names[0], stream, null);
            int numPages = dec.getNumPages();
            for (int i=0; i<numPages; i++) {
             try {
                    RenderedImage im = dec.decodeAsRenderedImage(i);
                    BufferedImage bi = PlanarImage.wrapRenderedImage(im).getAsBufferedImage();
              //In case not all pages are valid images, we use ArrayList as it is dynamic
              tmp.add(bi);
                }catch (RuntimeException re) {
              //Once the exception is caught, we can decode the layer here for whatever means.
        }catch (FileNotFoundException fnfe) {
            System.err.println("File not found.");
            fnfe.printStackTrace();
        }catch (Exception e) {
            System.err.println("General Exception caught");
            e.printStackTrace();
        //Convert to an array to be returned.
        img = new BufferedImage[tmp.size()];
        for (int i=0; i<img.length; i++) {
            img[i] = tmp.get(i);
        return img;
    }So a BufferedImage array is returned (one element in the array for each page in the multi-page file). Before I return the BufferedImage array, though, it would be good to convert it to the correct color. I know which channel is currently being loaded. Does anyone have any tips on how to shift from a grayscale intensity to a single color intensity? I have tried a number of things regarding byte shifting, but I am really none the wiser.
    I have tried, for example, reading the int color value:
    int color = bi.getRGB(w,h);The trouble is that this number is not in the region 0..255, so I don't know how I can use it. If I shift the number:
    color = color>>16I get a number smaller than 255 (although it seems to be negative), but I don't know whether I can use this value for a single color channel, i.e. if the current color is red, saying:
    Color redC = new Color(color, 0, 0);
    bi.setRGB(w,h,redC); //Slow and inefficient. There must be a better way.When I try doing that, I end up with nothing drawn or visible.
    Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Edited by: doughnuts64 on Jun 12, 2008 6:27 AM

    Thanks for the response. It has been helpful in getting my problem sorted. I was not creating a new BufferedImage - I was just using the one that had been loaded in, and as such had not realised that the type was not TYPE_INT_RGB. As soon as I instantiated a new BufferedImage of the same dimensions and colour TYPE_INT_RGB as you suggested, it worked! So thanks for that.
    Whilst that does work, it does slow the application incredibly as it has so much data to cycle through. Ideally, I would be able to load the image in directly as the colour channel in question, rather than loading in as grayscale. This way, the application would only require the amount of time needed to load in the images, not to process them on a pixel-by-pixel basis (typical images are made up of over 16,000,000 pixels for each colour channel, and we typically load two files in at once - both for separate colour channels, so over 32,000,000 pixels to process).
    As I am loading in multi-page tiff files, I am having to use the JAI (Java Advanced Imaging) toolkit. I use the following code to load in my multi-page tiff into a BufferedImage array, where each element of the array represents one of the 'pages' in the multi-page tiff file:
    SeekableStream stream = new FileSeekableStream(multiPageFile);
    String[] names = ImageCodec.getDecoderNames(stream);
    ImageDecoder dec = ImageCodec.createImageDecoder(names[0], stream, null);
    int numPages = dec.getNumPages();
    BufferedImage[] finalImage = new BufferedImage[numPages];
    for (int i=0; i<numPages; i++) {
         RenderedImage im = dec.decodeAsRenderedImage(i);
         finalImage[i] = PlanarImage.wrapRenderedImage(im).getAsBufferedImage();
         //...colour changing code currently here - loops through finalImage array, and on every pixel of every layer
    ...To be able to automatically convert the colour channel without having to loop on every pixel (and thus save an incredible amount of loading time) would be helpful.
    Thanks.

  • SAP EHS Functional Consultant Role

    Hi All SAP Experts!!!
    Seeking help from all of you for enlighten me with inputs for enabling me to take next step as a SAP EHS Functional Consultant Role.
    Quick information about myself, I am 43 year young guy, have done my Masters in Chem, Post Graduate Diploma in Safety Health and Environment, Certification in NEBOSH-International General Occupational Health & Safety, Lead Auditor of ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 with 20+ years of industrial experience of implementation of Safety Health and Environmental Management in various industries (Engineering, Oil & Gas, Automobile, Automotive, Chemical, Facility Management & Infrastructure at India, Middle East, South Africa & US) by working and auditing them for respective EHS Standards.
    As I have personally used and witnessed usage of many of the EHS related software which were ERP/ SAP based and found them very useful for making an fool-proof arrangement for effective EHS implementation. I did found some of the functional improvements areas during usage of the same i.e. by deploying EHS best practices I have witnessed at other industries directly or through software which will finally benefit the end-user and hence for the society too.
    Following are my queries -
    1. What can be the career path for person like me, who is having EHS functional knowledge & experience but does not have direct SAP implementation related experience and certification?
    2. What are the minimal certification and qualification I will be requiring before switching to SAP Functional Consultant Role?
    3. Who can be some of the best employer for me start this role?
    Any other information, suggestions and inputs in this regards are more than welcome.
    Thanking you all for the help and guidance you are going to provide.

    Looking forward for your valuable suggestions please !!
    Future  Scope of SD for an abaper.
    Therefore these are my hints:
    Check first: SAP EHS Management for Beginners
    Try to understand what SAP is doing (what means which solution exists and which solution is the right one to start with etc.).
    To act a functional guy in SAP area you need basic understanding about SAP solutions.
    1.) Shortly: there is no SAP certification in place for the SAP EHS solutions.
    2.) Career: normally you ned first some basic SAP and SAP EHS training. The SAP training is available nearly worldwide. SAP EHS training is limited. E.g. there seems to be no  good training option available in India (has been discussed as well in this FORUM).
    Based on you "starter package" (know how) the "SAP EHS end user" option may be is the best. If you know about legal aspects/regulations etc. then by working on that in a company using SAP EHS solutions you will get closer to "technique" For work in EHS environment you need to have knowledge at least in the area (as called by SAP): product safety, dangerous goods management; as these are the "core" topics to cover in a company handling chemistry. On the top: if you have knowledge in the area of "Label Management" or "Waste" topics then you are in good starting position.
    PLease check this FORUM. A lot of more threads can be found easily may be helping you to decide to go on.

    PS: please check first any SCN forum; it took me only "10" seconds (Ok less then one minute; but it was very easy)  to generate the list of threads as part of this thread.

    It will really be helpful if I can get some insight from the perspective of
    a functional consultant as nothing concrete has been said on the approach to be
    followed.
    The answer were helpful but I am looking for more suggestive help; in that
    respect I wrote additionally so that I can reach out to more people for a
    career changing decision.
    If you still want to restrict the free flow of ideas then it’s against the
