How to view hidden folders in Finder

Sometimes, it's not just folders, it's files too. Sometimes in non-mac sources, like my SMART TV, I see files named .filename.mp4 along with filename.mp4. And these fraudulent files are really bothering. And the worst part, I can't see them in Finder. So I need help to remove the .file.mp4.
I used the term 'filename.mp4' to represent an MP4 video file. But the files that have a . before them need to be deleted.
Thanks!!
Emmanuel Isaac

As Jeff Shenk says, they are "Apple Double" format which Mac OS X uses when storing Mac files on a non-HFS+ file system.  The ._ files contains the resource fork of a file.  Some applications store additional information about a file in the resource fork.  This could be things like font information, custom file icons, album art, track information, information about file formatting from a word processor, etc...  This is no limit to what an app might store in a resource fork.
For future reference you can easily take Mac OS X screen shots using:
Command-Shift-3
- Capture entire screen
Command-Shift-4
- Drag to select copy region
Command-Shift-4-Space   - Capture Window under cursor
If you want a menu or pop-up, then do the
Command-Shift-4-Space
after the menu or pop-up is setup as you like it.
If you want to capture the screen shot to the Clipboard, then add the "Control" key to any of the above, and you can then paste the screen shot from the Clipboard into any app that accepts picture input.

  • HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES?????

i have searched for days on my computer for some hint a program or option that allows me to view any hidden files in an application folder, but it has yet eluded me.
I am having trouble with a program of mine, and the tech service there told me to send them the programs log file, which they named. i looked in the applications folder, and the only files i saw was the program icon, and the uninstall folder, which contained the uninstall icon. i told them this, and they replied:
"i'am sure that these files are on your computer. Maybe they are invisible.
Please search (automatic) the folder ".********" ."
if anyone knows, eitehr what this means, or how to view hidden files, please let me know
    Thanx

To see inside an application package select the application then CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Show package contents from the contextual menu. You can navigate through the application package's content. It's unlikely you will find anything useful there.
To see invisible files open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the command line prompt enter or paste the following command then press RETURN:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files substitute FALSE for TRUE in the same command line.
Invisible files are invisible for a reason - to hide them from the prying eyes of novice users and ignorant tech support people. Perhaps it would be more helpful if you could detail the problem you are having.

  • How to view hidden user files and reset permissions

I am having difficulties getting the hidden files to appear first of all. I have tried a couple of different things that have been suggested in other posts. And I would really like a point in the right direction to find information on resetting permissions. Thanks in advance for any help.

To view hidden files, I use a third party program called Desktop Utility, takes only a few seconds to activate and have them shown. Quick and easy.

    Resetting Permissions info and How TO;
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
When you use the Disk Utility app and Repair Permissions — it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder where your documents and personal applications reside.
There is an additional Repair Permissions application utility hidden away. This tool is located inside boot Repair Utilities. Here’s how to access it.
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.
You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.

  • View hidden folders on Mac

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and I want to backup my iPod on it. I have done this before on Windows by viewing the hidden folders, but I don't know how to do it on a Mac. Help?

    Hello Buffa1o,
    And welcome to  Discussions!
There are a couple ways to do this, but I am going to stick with the terminal method, because I find it to be the quickest and most convenient. So head to *Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal*. When the window pops up, type this command in verbatim:
*defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE* -> Hit Enter to execute it and then type...
*killall Finder* and again hit Enter.
From there you should be able to open your iPod via Finder and see the iPod_Control folder that contains all your iPod's stored media. When you are finished, type the same 2 commands supplied above, except change TRUE to FALSE.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to view iPhoto library in finder so photos can be transferred to PC?

I'm going to store my iPhoto library on an external hard drive by default because I want to be able to view the photos on a PC. However when I import photos from my iPhone, they appear in the iPhoto application but how do I view them in the finder so that I can easily view them as individual picture files on a PC?

You can not do that  --  the iPhoto library must be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and the PC can not read that - and iPhoto has no cross platform capability and the library is not designed for direct access - it is not supported
You neet to use a different program tha does have cross platform capability
Or you can export photos from iphoto and have them on the PC or a drive the PC can access

  • How to view hidden files OS X Lion 10.7.3

Cannot find some files (my templates folder in Microsoft Word, I know the location of the folder but it will not show in Finder), tried holding down option key when selecting folders to show hidden folders but it did not work. Does anyone have any suggestions please.

Show Hidden Files in Mac OS X
If the files you are referring to are in your home directory's Library then rather than enabling all hidden files just use the Finder Go menu, Go To Folder..., and enter ~/Library and click the Go button.
If you want to make the Library visible then launch Terminal (in Utilities) and copy/paste the following line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
The hit returned and relaunch the finder.
You can reverse this operation to hide it again using:
    chflags hidden ~/Library

  • HOw to view hidden properties in BPC?

Hello, how do i view hidden properties in BPC? and also, does CaLC =Y always mean its a non base member? thanks.

    Hi,
As suggested, you can definitely view these properties in the BW side. In addition to this, this can be viewed in excel also. When you login to BPC excel, click on any of the dimensions from the CV. You can select any of the member and there is a button to display the properties.
Whenever a member is at the parent node or has a dimension formula, the CALC will be Y. Having said this, there might be a member whose CALC = Y, but its a base level member in the hierarchy. The reason behind this will be that the member has a dimension formula.
CALC basically determines whether the value of the member should be calculated or not. This calculation can take place either through roll up of child members or through some formula.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to remove Duplicate Folders in Finder

  • How do I view hidden folders?

I recently did a clean install of Lion on my MacBook Air and I have a copy of my previous home folder sitting on my desktop. How do I view the hidden Library folder that is in the previous home folder on my desktop? I'm sure there is an easy "Go to Folder" command, but I don't really know how the syntax for that is supposed to work so I can find it.
    Thanks!

No, but you can hold down the option key while clicking on the 'Go' menu in the Finder menubar and that will show your current ~/Library folder in the menu, which you can then click on.
However, as I understood your original post, you're trying to look at a hidden folder on your desktop (an old Library folder? Not sure how that's happened, but anyway).
If you don't want to show ALL hidden files you can just make one specific file visible by using this command in Terminal instead of the global one I gave you before (NOTE: this assumes there is an invisible file on your desktop called 'Library'. If that's not the case, change the path to wherever the hidden file is):
    chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/Library
Then press 'Return'. To make the same file hidden again just use:
    chflags hidden ~/Desktop/Library
    Then press 'Return'.

  • Fresh Install: Hidden Folders in Finder not Hidden... Need Help.

I just did a complete reformat/install of 10.5 and did a completely standard install, didn't modify anything. Ran all the updates to 10.5.2, and now folders on the root of my hard drive that are normally hidden are showing up for some reason... it's the "bin" "core" "etc" "private" "bin" "tmp" and a few others. I've tried everything to get them to go away (ran Disk Permissions, booted from the install DVD and ran Disk Utility, etc) and they refuse to go away. Even tried logging in as root and changing the visibility of the folders with File Buddy and that didn't work.
Anyone else have this problem and have a solution?

    Hello
I had to reinstall a new hard drive and experienced this problem myself, here is the fix I found at
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071107023334449
I can confirm that this WORKS.
"Have you just reinstalled Mac OS X Leopard? Are you one of the unlucky ones that now has visible Unix files in your root file system? I sure did, and after digging around a little, it seems to be a bug in the Mac OS X installer -- but it only happens when you install a clean copy of Leopard (not updating). The question however, is how to get rid of them.. Obviously, deleting the folders is NOT an option.
    Here's how you hide them:
    Insert your Leopard DVD
Choose Open Apple Install Discs in Pacifist
    Choose the Leopard DVD
Find and Extract the following two files to a directory of your choice:
    Resources » OSInstall.mpkg » OSInstall.pkg » Scripts for hidden_MacOS9
    Resources » OSInstall.mpkg » OSInstall.pkg » Scripts » Tools » SetHidden
Open Terminal and cd to the folder you extracted the files to.
    Run this command sudo ./SetHidden / hidden_MacOS9.
Enter password and reboot your Mac once the command has executed.
After rebooting, the unix folders and links should now be hidden from the root file system again, just like in Tiger. "
    Please download Pacifist first.
    Cheers

  • How to view hidden window file in a memory card?

I am connecting a memory card to a mac
But i cant view the hidden files in it
    It is a window file
    Can anyone help ?=)

Symbian^3 currently has no way of looking at stored messages in the memory card. If you would like to access them, load the memory card back to your old phone and sync them to your PC via Ovi suite where these messages can be read on the program. You can move these to the C6-01 via Ovi Suite should you desire to do so.

  • How to view hidden files on a mac

I have certain hidden files on my mac that i know are there because they are taking up file space i was wondering how i can make them unhidden thanks

One of those multi-purpose gizmos is overkill for this simple task (unless you already have one – I personally don't use them). Save (to any location you like) Gnarlodious's script as an app, and then slide that app into the sidebar of any Finder window. From then on one click on that sidebar alias toggles 'see invisibles' on and off. My script is virtually the same:
    set {currentSetting, toggle} to {do shell script ¬
        "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles", "ON"}
if currentSetting is in "ONO" then set toggle to "OFF"
    try
-- If you know how to, optionally insert a 'whoosh' sound here.
        tell application "Finder" to quit
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles " & toggle
delay 0.25 -- Alter this value by trial & error to suit your Mac.
        tell application "Finder" to launch
    on error errTxt
        display dialog errTxt
    end try
Paste that block of green text (or Gnarlodious's) into Script Editor, hit your <enter> key and the text should now display in pretty colors with no error message. You can click on "Run" to test it. Save as an application with all the Options UNchecked.
If you know how to, give it a suitable icon – mine is a "switch".
Heed the warnings about interfering with 'invisible' items. Looking is fine, altering is only for those who know what they are doing – that's why they're invisible!

  • How to merge 3 folders in finder?

The thing is I have multiple finder windows open and have these three folders that have the same name each in their own directory.
I simply hold option and drag so that one is copied from one directory to another dirctory on my computer.
I do the same to another folder and a pop-up ( as I expected) come up and asks whether to keep the newer files. I click yes keep the newer files.
I was relived and thought that I could do this for the third folder but for some strange reason I get a more stern ultimatium, whether to stop the copying of the folder or replace the folder entirely so that only the third folder remains and the previous two I merged together become removed from my computer.
my question is how can I merge together all three folders?

Their isn't any easier way to do this?
And also this exactly what I ended up doing, Thank a lot.
    This really helped me..
But I guess my question is now more along the lines of why after my atempt to merge the third folder does the promt in the pop-up change, from when I simply just wanted to merge two folders?
