How To Work Smarter With Preset Adjustment Layers ?

Photoshop CS5 (maybe CS6 too ?)
From the ‘Adjustments’ panel I often use a preset Adjustment Layer (I’ve saved some of my own in here).
I click on the preset adjustment layer I want and it appears in the Layers panel with a generic name ‘Curves [X’] or ‘Levels [Y]’ or whatever. How many times have I had to type in the preset’s name, the name which is already in the preset list (rhetorical question – loads).
Here's an example:
I insert a single preset layer into the Layers panel. In the preset list it already has the name “Compensation for Printing”; when it arrives in the Layers panel it is given a default name “Curves [X]”. I then have to type it’s name “Compensation for Printing” into the Layers panel. It would be more helpful, and time saving if, instead of having the name “Curves [X]” it had the name “Compensation for Printing”, already entered as the layer’s name.
So (to labour the point) wouldn't it be cool if, when you clicked on the preset adjustment layer, it arrived in the Layers panel with it’s name already entered. Or maybe we could have this as an option?
So if CS6 cannot do this, which from the Photoshop forum it appears not, could this be made into a ‘feature’ in a future update of Photoshop. A small thing I know but very useful. Would be awfully nice.

I just suggested using actions because it would take care of the curves adjustments you would have to make (you would just copy the same settings as the preset), as well as it would take care of the renaming process you were mentioning all in one click for you. It would be a solution for now. I definitely agree that the name should carry over, this seems very odd that it doesn't. You should request it in the ideas forum here:

How to work rtmfp with fms 4.0?

I'm working on an application to make a video chat between two people with actionscript 3 and flash media server 4.0. To do this, I followed the tutorial of Tom Krcha to do a P2P video chat with cirrus: http://flashrealtime.com/tuts/p2p-in-flash.html.
My application works fine with cirrus but not with fms:
The broadcasting netstream through a NetConnection in rtmfp works but the receiving netstream(video of the another person) doesn't work.I put a listener on the receiving netstream video(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS) but it returns nothing.However, this code works very well whith cirrus.
Miss I a configuration on the fms server?
I currently use two server side applications to make a video chat: multicast (which was already present on the server) or live (which was also present). Moreover, in Adaptor.xml, rtmfp is enable.

With one to one video chat, using rtmfp with FMS is not advisable as it will use your server bandwidth. RTMFP is useful for multicasting a video. Also, if you are trying to use FMS for one to one video chat, you will have to handle both client side code as well as server side code yourself and the same piece of code will not work which worked with cirrus as with FMS, you will need a server side application in which you need to handle both the published streams. Also, Developer's key is not required for FMS.

How to work efficiently with HDV footage in Final Cut Pro 6

Hello everyone! I am fairly new to Final Cut & Mac. I have worked with Final Cut Pro 5 on my Powerbook G4 two years ago. But when I moved to HD, I switched to a PC with Adobe Premiere. Recently, I made the move back to Final Cut as I had problem with the stability of both Premiere 2.0 and CS3. I am really happy with it so far. In Premiere, I used the Cineform codec which performed very well. I also got a license for their MAC codec but unfortunately, I still have to capture under Windows.
Since I have not worked with HDV on the Mac before, I have a few questions which I hope people on these boards can answer.
1) How does Final Cut Pro 6 handle native HDV?
2) Is it beneficial to convert to Pro Res 422 (in terms of quality, but also in terms of editing speed, rendering time, in favor of processing speed etc.)
3) Which Pro Res 422 setting is advised? I will be capturing HDV through firewire and then recompress to Pro Res 422. The Canon XL-H1 squeezes 1080i into 1440x1080. So I figured I need the 1440x1080 setting. There are two options: normal and (HQ). The HQ files are around 4-times bigger then the native HDV file. The normal setting results in files around 2-times bigger. Coming from HDV, do I see the difference between normal and HQ?
4) What systems are recommended so I can work efficiently? i.e. how to setup the scratch disks. I currently have the applications installed on Disk 1, all scratch disks on Disk 2 + 3 (RAID 0) and final results on Disk 4.

- Apple Mac Pro Quad-Core (2.66Ghz)
- 5GB of RAM
- ATI X1900XT 512MB
- Harddisks:
-1- Western Digital 750GB SE

Just like the Cineform codec you will benefit from an all i-frame codec when working with titles and graphics. I wouldn't recommend capturing native then converting to ProRez as this will take an extremely long time. Many have found editing native up until the compositing then dropping the sequence into a ProRez timeline to render. I prefer to uncompress the HDV with hardware into a capture card and transcode on capture in real time. Depending on the flavor of HDV and the equipment you use you can probably find a method for this. I shoot run & gun field work on to tape, then with the deck I can export via HDMI and together with another product from Convergent Design it is converted to HD-SDI in the a Kona LHe into FC. The benefit for me is the all digital decompression from 1440x1080 4:2:0 to a 1920x1080 4:2:2 uncompressed HD-SDI signal to use anyway I need to. As to which level of PR I can't comment but I have used the lower level and it looks great. As to raid setup I can recommend www.maxupgrades.com to help you add two - four more drives internally for unbelievable speed and expanded storage space you will want. The owner (Syed) will give you all the support you need to take advantage of the Mac Pro capabilities for a low cost high performance raid solution. Sounds like you have a great setup in mind, you may want to look into the Kona LHe capture card for capturing and monitoring and a Convergent Design product like the HD-Connect SI or MI depending on the deck you are using. If you need broadcast quality monitoring look into the Matrox MXO.

Just create another MobileMe account in Mail. Go to Mail -> Preferences, click the Accounts icon and click the + button at the bottom left corner of the window. Enter the requested info.

Ask Best Practice How to Work Together with ADF

Hi,
I'm using JDev 10.1.3.3 with CVS. Could someone show me best practice to work together in team to build an application using ADF Faces, EBJ and TopLink.
I've read ADF Developer guide about collaboration with CVS, but still doesn't give enough best practice for me.
For example, let say i have Oracle DB 11g as database and my application have 3 module (finance, sales and callcenter). The 3 module will access same database, schema and tablespace.
I have 5 developer in team, now my problem is sometimes DataModel can make conflict with the other because we edit the file together (toplink.mwp), UserInterface also can make a conflict with file FacesConfig.xml, databindings.cpx etc.
Please share some best practice.

Editing Adjustment Layers Not Working

Using Photoshop Elements 10. I am unable to edit an Adjustment Layer. When I doubleclick the layer thumbnail or click layer content options, nothing happens. This is the case with new files as well as files that had adjustment layers created with Photoshop Elements 6. Fill layers work ok, but adjustment layers such as Levels and Hue/Saturation won't work....need help desperately.

Good evening. I am using PSE 11 Mac version and I am having the same issue as the original post. I am unable to edit adjustment layers. No problem with fill layers.
I have tried your solution, which worked on deleting the file, but PSE 11 is still not letting me do anything with the adjustment layers.
As an FYI, I am also unable to select any of the "Window" menu selections, such as "Actions", "Histogram", etc. I am attaching a quick screen capture to show the menue that I am talking about.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

Adjustment Layers Irregularities

This is a twofold question.
1. What is the best order to put adjustment layers in?
2. Are adjustment layers slower than the "old" way?
More details
1. Stacking Order
After noticing some irregularities in my render times, I have discovered that it matters A LOT which order you apply effects in adjustment layers--how they are stacked.
For example, I have a simple sequence with 30 CamA/CamB cuts. I want apply an RGB Curves color correction ("CC" below) and Neat Video Noise removal effects to the entire sequence, so I do it in the form of the new adjustment layers--one for CC and the other for Neat.
Here are my observations and render times of the exact same sequence with different stacking orders of the exact same effects:
0:43 CC + Neat
2:30 Neat + CC
0:14 No Effects
0:15 CC only
0:42 Neat only
0:30 Neat only - Effects applied to each individual cut with no adjustment layers
I haven't done extensive research on with other effects (I'm hoping someone else, or especially Adobe has). But I couldn't figure out why two similar sequences would take 2 hours and another just 30 minutes since they were very similar and I noticed that my adjustment layers were in different order.
QUESTION
It's obvious, at least from this limited test above, that the stacking order of effects is important. Only now, after doing the testing, I know that I need to do my CC first THEN my noise removal. But what about with other effects?
2. Adjustment Layers Slower?
From the above testing, I noticed another irregularity (IMO). In my test result #6 above, when I applied the exact same noise removal effect to each individual clip as opposed to an adjustment layer, my render time was reduced by 33%.
Does using adjustment layers present a render hit when compared to using effects the "old" way (clip-by-clip basis)?

1. The order actually applies to the effects themselves, as the stacking order can produce different results, depending on the effects used.
2. In my tests, no. I get the same render times whether the effects are applied to the clip directly or to an AL.

'Ignore Adjustment Layers' when auto selecting

Auto select - being able to highlight layers based on where you click in the image, is a very useful option. Especially for design based work.
What I want is a way to specify the auto-selecting of active layer content only (this could be pixel or vector of course). And for it not to pick up adjustment layers.This could be an additional option in the move tool options bar. It would also be picked up with the Command and Shift command shortcuts (control on PC) which are so useful as they are.
Unfortunately for those of us that work with very complex layered structures, with many adjustment layers at the top level - auto select will also pick up WHITE areas on masks which have content other than 100% white or black. Its actually quite rare than you want to highlight adjustment layers in this way, and it really gets in the way. It very quickly becomes impossible to auto-acivate layers underneath any masked adustment layers
I am also aware of the contextual Control click and choose any layer under the icon, but this is not a replacement.

A workaround to avoid auto selecting adjustment layers is to lock the adjustment layer.
But an option in the Move tool will be more elegant solution.

Adjustment layers lose effect when merged

This is the look I am trying achieve while the Curves, Levels and the base image are in their own layers.
But when I merge the layers...this is what happens.
What's going on? What am I doing wrong?
I've tried accessing the adjustments in the "Image" tab...same results. I have tried merging a combination of two layers first, it becomes messed up. Is there a way for me to save these three layers together and have my desired results?

I'm curious to hear what people say on this, as it's something I've observed plenty of times, but haven't spent enough time figuring it out to really say I fully understand it. I usually encounter it when one of the layers has a blending mode applied and the others do not. I wouldn't have thought that it would occur with just adjustment layers (do yours have a blending mode applied?). I'm sure that I merge groups frequently with adjustment layers and it usually works. But as I said, I don't fully understand it, I just know when it occurs to step back and use another method:
My workaround is that I do a stamp visible (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E) of the image I want instead of a merge. It seems to work, hence I didn't dig anymore into exactly when and what makes this occur. I'm sure someone has a better solution than mine...

Adjustment layers effects not applying when flattening image or merging layers CS6

So about a week ago I noticed something changed with my adjustment layers. In an image I would make a selection and start using adjustment layers to edit that selection, and then once I was finished, I would merge the adjustment layers together so that I could erase outside areas where the effect was not intended. However, whenever I merged the layers, the effects would go away and the thumbnail preview by the layer title would become blank (gray and white transparent) as if there was not anything on the layer. I messed around and I reset Photoshop, and then I thought the layers were fixed. They were somewhat fixed, except I've started having trouble again. Now I'm having difficulty editing this one image i'm on. It's a portrait with a photoshop-created red mask going around eyes, and I used the dissolve layer effect on the original mask creation which was black at first. Then I selected that selection and made more layers editing the hue, saturation, brightness/contrast, and exposure.
I tried to save the image as a jpeg, and the effects were messed up. The hue and all other adjustment layers seemingly applied, except the dissolve effect does not show up at all. So I tried to fix it manually. I flattened the image first with intention to then save it as a jpeg, but as soon as I flattened the image, again the dissolve effect was not applied. Then I tried to merge the layers, and yet again, the dissolve effect was not showing up. It shows up fine in PSD form, something's wrong with the conversion process. Please don't be mean to me. I'm not great at photoshop, I'm not saying that I am or claiming to be a pro or anything I just want help from people who actually get it. I have CS6 and use a Macbook Pro.

I stopped even trying to read this append. For is seems very complex and overwhelmed my little mind. Please consider including some screen captures showing your Photoshop window with your document that your writing about open and the layer palette shows the structure of the document. For me examples and screen capture of the steps involves involved would be very helpful.

Can I convert a series of adjustment layers into a single action?

I have a Photoshop CS6 document with 20-some adjustment layers and would like to be able to apply their effect to multiple image files. I'm looking for a way to convert the series of adjustment layers into a single action so that I can batch process a set of images. Can this be done?
Unless I'm missing something, it appears that no trivial solution exisits. For example, there's no option that allows for selecting the adjustment layers, right clicking them, and choosing 'convert to action.' What I want to avoid is having to redo each adjustment layer just for the sake of recording an action.
Also, I understand that I can always "place" (i.e. drag and drop) the image requiring processing into the Photoshop document containing the adjustment layers, saving a merged copy as jpeg, and repeat... but such a manual method would border on insulting to this prowess of a program.
If anyone can get creative and suggest a method of recording an action that can make use of the document with the adjustment layers and a variable document that will be passed through during the batch process, I'm all eyes!

You have the other choice with drag/drop or duplicate where you copy the adjustment layers into the other image document. Target all the adjustment layers in the layer palette click on the first one the Ctrl|CMD+click on the others or if adjacent Shift+click on the last one to target all the adjustment layer then use menu Layer>Duplicate Layers... and use the pull down menu in the pop-up dialog to choose the other open image document.
You can of course record an action when you add all the adjustment layers then play that action on the other images. Twenty adjustment layer on top of an image seems a bit extreme to me.

How do I save a stack of adjustment layers that I want to then apply instantly to another image ?

Can anyone help with the following Photoshop question please ?
I've been working on a 16bit image in PS CC on my Mac that has a stack of approximately 15 Adjustment Layers (AL's) which has taken a fair amount of work to put together and then saved as an unflattened PSD. The AL's consist of Curves, Selective Colour, Hue & Sat, Vibrance, Col Bal and Photo Filters with a variety of Masks. All AL's have been renamed with their own unique names.
My question is:
How do I save this stack of 15 AL's, as I want apply them to other similar images that where shot during a motor drive burst either side of the image mentioned above ?
I know I can achieve exactly what I want by dragging all 15 AL's from the original image on to newly opened individual images.
Although this method works absolutely perfectly and is instant I want to be able to somehow apply these AL's in an instantaneous automated way to enable me to deal with the large numbers of images that I want to apply this to.
It appears to be the case that it isn't possible to simply select the complete stack of AL's from the original image, copy them and then paste them into a new image ! If this was possible I would simply create a simple action to deal with it.
I know already that I can create an action to deal with this now, however that entails laboriously retracing what I did to the original image by saving presets to the many AL's, then reloading them, putting them in the correct order and finally renaming all of the AL's but as you'll appreciate it's a fairly long drawn out process which would take forever.
I also need a method which has instant built in flexibility for when I tweak some of the AL's settings. At this point I wouldn't want to then have to go through the whole process of re-writing an involved action.
I hope the above makes some sense to you all and that you can understand what I want to do.
I've briefly looked over the Adobe forum where many people have been trying to find unsuccessfully the answer to this question for many years. If anyone has some sort of workaround for this I would very much appreciate hearing from you.
