How well does the MBP work for gameplay?

Now I know what you're thinking. If I'm solely looking for a gaming computer than I should get a computer solely for gaming, but this is not the case. I would just simply like to play World of Warcraft occasionally. The game is pretty intensive. I'm willing to upgrade the ram to 8gb, but that won't really drastically change the gameplay. How good is the gamecard that comes with it or should I upgrade it? If I can even upgrade it. What's the fps? All that stuff. Thanks in advance.

Hi Jesse,
I'm thinking you might have posted this question in the wrong forum. This is the MacBook Air forum, in your title you ask about the MBP and in your question you ask about going to 8GB of RAM. The MacBook Air does not support upgrading the RAM, maximum of 4GB. In addition the MacBook Air is commonly abreviated as MBA.
If there's been a mix up and you're legitimately asking about the Air, here's my impressions of it -
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15682909#15682909
For what it's worth, the GPU in the 13" MBP is identical to the one in the 11" & 13" MBA. Although the 11" MBA allocates slightly less system RAM.
World of Warcraft, as you know, can run reliably on some pretty old machines. It definitely runs just fine on the Intel HD 3000, in the fair-to-good category. I can't say I was thrilled with the performance in a 25-man Firelands raid last week but it's acceptable.

As you might imagine, without knowing a ton of information about the actual construction of the walls and ceiling of your home.....how many walls and other obstructions would be in the signal path of each device.....and the distance between each device and the AirPort Express.....along with how many users would be online at one time or another and what activities they would be involved in......etc., it's really not possible to accurately predict what type of results you might achieve.
The bottom line with any wireless installation is that you really won't know how effectively it will actually perform until you try it.
My opinion would be that you will likely need to add an additonal AirPort Express to "extend" the wireless more effectively to the bottom floor. But again, the same things apply as above.

  • How well does the TomTom app work?

Let's hear it, how well does the TomTom app work compared to a dedicated GPS device? Are you using TomTom's special cat kit? Is there a way to load TomTom binary files (POIs) onto the iphone?

I have used a Garmin Nuvi760 for about 2 years and have been very pleased. When TomTom had a sale for $50 and now seems to be $60, I bought it. I also bought a kensington car mount. (http://us.kensington.com/html/17546.html). I like it. with my 3GS, there is no need for the amplified TomTom car kit. The speech quality could be better but it's loud enough. I do like the on screen presentations a bit more than my Garmin. I'm still getting used to the interface. It's a real good thing that I can use my contacts file to set destinations. My next step is to go on an 800 mile trip this month and compare the two systems side by side. So far, TomTom has not always made the best route choice and once sent me to the right address in an adjoining city. (This is southern Cal) Not good, but these are map issues which will always be evolving. Is it worth it? Yes. At $100, maybe. The good thing is that my phone is always with me and so is my GPS. I does put a drain on the battery, so it should be on charging while using in a car.

How well does Compressor 4 work with Final Cut 6?

The short answer is that there is no interoperability between them. Of course, you can certainly export a QT movie from FCP and bring it into C4.
Honestly, I'm not sure it's worth it for someone already has C3. There is very little that C4 can do that C3 cannot. The major differences are that C4 has certain presets like  MPEG 4 h.264 and 1080 Apple TV; it can also create simple Blu Rays and DVDs. Qmaster is integrated, but I'm not sure whether that is a gain.

how well does the Droid Charge do when dropped accidentally? any screen or internal damages?
I'm probably going to have some kind of rubberized case.

Please consider getting an otterbox commuter case at least from amazon or otterbox.com
the defender series otterbox case with screen protector case isn't being shipped yet so i am using
the otterbox commuter case with verizon wireless store's 3pack of screen protectors - i do not like screen protectors but verizon sells the ones for the charge specifcally and it will
hold me over just fine until defender ships in august or september
either case helps to not accidentally press the power button easily while holding this droid Charge
    there's my advce
ps these add bulk to phone i like the commuter case it is way sturdy polycarbonate or whatever STRONG black plastic with port covers except for hdmi that already has a cover built into phone
the defender series will be bulkier

  • How well does the 2013 MacBook Air 13" Handle Adobe Creative Cloud Program's?

How Well Does The 13" MacBook Air Handle The Adobe Creative Cloud Apps?
I'm A Visual Communication Student But I Would Like Extremely Portable Setup Hence The MacBook Air 13", The Main Program's I Use Are:
    Photoshop
    InDesign
    Illustrator
And I Also Use Dreamweaver & After Effects From Time To Time.....
How Would A Top Spec 2013 13" Air Cope Running These Program's??

What about the backpack? Did you have it in one often?
College and notebooks = backpacks usually 9 times out of 10,  was that the case?
Your MacBook Air doesnt like roommates in your backpack
Many collects students or people in general are fond of using non-idealized backpacks (without a padded laptop compartment) along with their books. Sandwiching books around your notebook etc. is an extremely bad idea and can leads to your LCD screen being destroyed when heavy textbooks are pressing against same, or when dropping your backpack, these books slam into your Macbook causing great potential for damage.
~"large white blotch and pixilated lines running down the screen."
    That indicates a significant impact.
~~"They kept telling me it was "excess pressure". I told them it was impossible, it would be normal pressure"
What do you mean by "normal pressure"   ANY pressure to the LCD is abnormal pressure.

  • How well does the Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse work in a Multiboot system?

After a couple of weeks with working with the Apple Magic Mouse in my Windows 8.1 Boot Camp environment, I have been unable to find a solution for the Slow Connection Times that I am experiencing.  Takes up to a minute before the AMM is able to connect and I can use in the Windows 8.1 system.  (Yes, Bluetooth Collaboration is Enabled.)  So I am now wondering if I need to look for a different mouse and return the Apple Magic Mouse.  Anyone have experience with using the Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse in both the MAC OSX and Windows 8.1 (under Boot Camp) environments.
How quickly does the Logitech connect to bluetooth on the Windows 8.1 side?
How much does the Logitech utilize the same gestures as in the Apple Magic Mouse in Mac OSX?
Anyone use or own this Ultrathin Touch Mouse?

Do you have a Mighty Mouse already? I don't think Apple sells the Mighty Mouse anymore.
If you're looking at purchasing a new mouse from Apple, you'd be getting the Magic Mouse, which is a multi-touch capable mouse. It's a really great mouse; I use one with our 21.5" iMac all the time. Respectable battery life, and it tracks much nicer than our older (wired) Apple Pro Mouse. No lag, no interference, nothing with it. We have multiple cordless phones (including a base station about 18" from the mouse and computer) and there is never interference. It tracks as well or better than a wired mouse.

  • How well do the MBP's hold up?

I've been using laptops for some years now, mainly Dell Inspiron and Latitudes, but just picked up myself an MBP. The MBP seems to be build like a tank with its aluminun case...but how well do these things hold up?
For those of you who have them I would be interested in how much you use your MBP, how you use it...traveling, school, etc. I would also be interested in whether you shut them down or just close the lid, go to your next destination, open it up and continue on with your work?
How well do the keyboards hold up on the MBP? I've gone through a few on my work Latitude.
    Thanks,
    ~Steve

At work I've used a IBM T42 for the last 2 years including lots of international travel.
In short the T42 is a slow (pentium M) bulletproof laptop that has taken everything I've thrown at it without any issues. This includes airports, hot/humid countries and I've never had a problem with presentation projectors.
I have a MBP 15" 2.4 SR with 2GB for home. My first Mac too. Here's my impression:
    1. Aluminium is thin compared to the feel of the T42
    2. Screen wobbles (flexes) more than the T42 this could lead to fatigue when working on the move, when the screen is shut on the T42 the overlap against the side of the laptop prevent side ways knocks to the screen breaking the screen pivot.
    3. Heat issues without smcFanControl. The T42 isn't afraid to ramp up/down it's fans.
    4. No form of desk dock. It's quite useful just to place the laptop in the dock and have everything (power, network, keyboard, mouse, second monitor, skype headset, etc) all connect up in one go. I suppose apple's answer is wireless..
    5. MBP is faster performance than the T42 by a long way.
    6. MBP SR has better battery life by far
    7. T42 wireless experience has been better than the MBP - mainly due to OSX's desire to look for a different connection if the preferred wireless becomes unavailable.
    8. Keys on the T42 becames nice and shiney quite quickly but I don't have a problem with that. MBP has no issues.
    9. MBP has far better trackpad usability - down to OSX. On the move I'd often loose files with the T42 with the trackpad as windows double click on the pad causes drags etc.
10 Webcam in the MBP is a master stroke. With my T42 I carry a Logitech Fusion webcam around to record white board sessions. Now the MBP internal cam can do that - although it does require some odd looking manovers with the MBP!
    11. No getting away from it - MS Office. The move by MS to support Applescript instead of VB for the mac:Office 2008 is a little worrying as VB scripted templates from the business will no longer work. I've yet to see if this will be a problem but it makes me apprehensive.
    12. MS Visio - I've not found a OSX substitute. This needs to be available for integrating into mac:Office 2008 documents, slide sets etc.
    13. HDD movement protection. The T42 has very good movement protection. I don't feel the MBP's is quite up to that standard.
    14. Second monitor/projector support is good with both. I think the MBP OSX has the lead over windows but it does require an adaptor. Just a bind to remember it..
So in short - I would say that the MBP isn't ready for mainstream travel business abuse. The build design is great for sitting in coffee bars or places without much movement but needs more armour and architectural integrity for mainstream business abuse.
The T42 is designed from the bottom up for abuse and it shows it. Now lagging behind in performance and features it's still one of the best (if not the best) business laptops out there.
Working practice perspective - I would prefer the MBP/OSX as a work platform.
I hope I don't get shot by the applofisi but that's my experience.

  • Was wondering how well does the 1Ghz titanium runs Leopard?

    Hi
Could some one put up a youtube video of how well leopard runs on the last titanium g4?
I mean the minimum for leopard is 800mhz ... but how well does it actually run? is it worth purchasing leopard if you have 1Ghz?
    Thanks
    Chris

Hi, Nomad.c. How fast any OS runs on any computer is a lot more than you could reasonably expect to learn from any YouTube video.
We've seen posts here from people who had installed Leopard even on Tibooks that didn't meet the minimum processor-speed requirement of 867MHz (not 800MHz). They seemed to be happy with it by and large, but they may have had reasonable expectations going in. It won't be faster than what you're running now, but it will have some new features; you may or may not find them valuable. But you'd better have your Tibook's RAM maxed out at 1GB, because Leopard is much greedier for RAM than Tiger or Panther. That means if you use RAM-hungry applications on top of Leopard, you're going to make greater use of virtual memory than you have up to now, and VM is many times slower than real RAM.

  • How good does the Isight work?

    Hi,
I was watching the video on the homepage of apples website. Where steve jobs talks about the new products, he talks about the imac with isight built in. Does the isight work that smooth, if someone is in another state, if you both have a cable connection? i have a powerbook, and I would like to get a isight.
    Thanks

It all depends on your connection. I've gotten good video connection, nothing as good as the demonstration tho. If I had to bet, the connection that Steve was working on was an internal or some speedy internet connection like a T3 or something. For the average person with good broadband connection, the video outperforms anything else I have used with a PC.

  • Does the "Anamorphicizer" work for FCE and FCP?

    I have:
    Final Cut Express HD 3.0
    iDVD 6.0.2
Just downloaded the anamorphicizer from this link
    http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
to help my project maintain it's 16:9 aspect ratio in iDVD.
Before I spend $30.00 for quicktime pro (so that I can start using the anamorphicizer with it) can someone tell me if the anamorphicizer works for Final Cut Express?
If you go to the page above it says, "Export your video from FCP like you normally would for going to iDVD," and does not mention FCE.
Or, is there another website to download a "anamorphicizer" version that works for FCE?
    Thanks!
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Final Cut Express

I've had kind of iffy results with Anamorphicizer, but I suspect that's because I don't know what I'm doing (or am trying to convert funky file formats). But when I drop a file on top of Anamorphicizer, it automatically opens up QT Pro and instructs me to save the converted file. I think you might have to get QT Pro in order to use it—I'm not sure, but don't think that the regular (free) version of QT has the "save as" capabilities of QT Pro. (Could be wrong, though. . . )
Anyway, sure, if you save a file after it's been converted by Anamorphicizer, it should be able to be opened in FCE. (I save my files as a "Hinted" Quicktime movie.
