HP continues to ship defective Intel 6 series chipset to customers after recall.

Something folks should be aware of is that HP has instituted a "fix" that isn't really a fix.  I had a DV7T QE (product number XN093AV) that was ordered in January.  The laptop was affected by the chipset issue and after about a month of checking back with HP customer service I was finally told that they had a resolution and that I could exchange my machine for one with the newly revised chipset.  The replacement machine was delivered to me in mid March, it was the identical product number (XN093AV) and contained the identical faulty chipset.
Some background for those not familiar with the chipset issue.  Intel initiated a recall of their 6 series (cougar point) southbridge chipset designed for use with the second generation core i-series "sandybridge" CPU's.  Among the chipset's functions is the SATA controller interface for storage devices.  The chipset manages 6 SATA ports, 2 at 6 Gb/s and 4 at 3 Gb/s.  It is the 3 Gb/s ports that are affected by the design flaw which can lead to data errors for an attached storage device.  Intel's mobile version of this chipset is called HM65 and the stepping (version) of the chipset with the problem is "B2".  Intel has implemented a silicon fix and released a new stepping "B3" which does not have the problem.  However, Intel has continued to ship the affected "B2" stepping to manufacturers for applications where only the 6 Gb/s ports would be used as they are unaffected by the design flaw.
Back to HP's "fix" - my original machine had the faulty "B2" stepping HM65 chipset with a hard drive connected to a 6 Gb/s port and an optical drive connected to one of the faulty 3 Gb/s ports.  The replacement machine I received also had the same "B2" stepping HM65 chipset with both drives now connected to the 6 Gb/s ports.  Unfortunately this isn't an acceptable solution on at least two fronts.  First, in addition to the primary hard drive bay and the optical drive bay this particular 17.3 inch laptop has a secondary hard drive bay.  I have independently purchased an SSD drive that I intend to install in addition to the factory installed drives.  This requires the use of a third port which would have to be one of the faulty 3 Gb/s ports.  Moreover the laptop also has an e-SATA connector for connecting to external drives which I intend to use for backups.  I didn't verify this but considering that the primary hard drive and the optical drive are consuming the only two working ports it stands to reason that the e-SATA connector is connected to one of the faulty ports.
After about 5 hours of being bounced around in the HP customer service void and being told that there was nothing wrong with my machine they agreed to exchange it yet again for one of the newly released DV7T QE models (product number XW899AV) which I am hoping will have the HM65 "B3" stepping chipset.  I haven't received it yet so I can't verify whether or not the new product has the same issue.  I will post when I do get it.
Does this impact you?  You can determine which stepping of the chipset you have by running CPU-Z, a free and widely trusted system utility, available at www.cpuid.com.  Select the mainboard tab and look at your chipset revision.  If you have the "B2" stepping and you intend to use more than two SATA devices at the same time you may have an issue.  The following link outlines your options from hp.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02712015&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=505...
I will point out that the answer to FAQ # 2 is definitively untrue.
Is HP still making products with the affected Intel chipset?
No. HP has stopped manufacturing products with the Intel technology at issue and has placed a shipment hold on products in HP and channel inventory.
Good luck.

  • Intel 9 series chipset driver problem

    hello
i know this is intel driver's problem, but as a manufacturer who use intel products especially chipset, can anyone tell intel that their "9 series" chipset driver is totally crap, absurd and so on? for those who are using this series of chipset, try checking their chipset driver via device manager and click any of "intel 9 series chipset family" driver under system devices or "intel 9 series chipset family usb..." driver under usb controllers and you can find that its driver provider are from microsoft and dated 2006. right, it is installed by operating system and chipset installer utility did nothing.
until intel knows about this thinsg, those who using 9 series chipset are using drivers from microsoft.

    Hi,
Do you actually have any problems? Because Quote
chipset driver is totally crap, absurd and so on?
    doesn't explain anything.
Follow >>Posting Guide<< and if possible we'll help you with the problem.
The fact they're dated 2006 doesn't mean anything. As long as thing is working fine, there's no need of updating. Possibly you're one out of xxx people that has some problems with it, but Intel (nor MSI, M$ and so on) couldn't really catch the issue since millions of tests before release is impossible.

  • Intel C600 series chipset not recognized

I have some brand new HP Z420's. They use the Intel C602 chipset. ZENworks imaging is not identifying the hard drive or cdrom.
HP does have SLED 11 x64 drivers on its website, but as far as I can tell they only released x64.
Any ideas to get this working?

OK, I think I have the exact same issue that you have resolved. Can you assist me through the changes you made?
Did you alter the settings.txt file on the Zenworks boot disk?
I can boot from CD or PXE with a new Z420.
    Thanks

  • Intel (r) Series Chipset PCI Express x4 Ports 3-7

I have seen several of these questions but no one seem to have the answer. I am running Windows XP Pro with new MAC Pro using the latest Bootcamp and Firmware. Every thing seem to be peachy except for these 4 exclamation marks on these devices in my device manager. Any one find out the clues to theses mysterious marks and how to solve the problem? Help Please.

    Hi there,
the question marks refer to the unused PCIe slots on the mainboard.
Since they don't interfere and everthing works I prefer to sit and wait for updated driver from Apple.
    Have Fun

  • No sound with ALSA and/or Pulse from built-in Intel 5 Series Card

    Hello,
I posted a thread about a similar problem to this 4 years ago, but that solution is no longer working for me, and I'm just now returning to Arch after floating between a few different distros, so I'm not as knowledgeable about this as I might once have been.
Basically, my problem is that sound does not work on my laptop, neither through the internal speakers or headphone jack, and neither with plain ALSA nor Pulseaudio. This leads me to believe that there is some underlying problem that once solved, will allow plain ALSA and Pulse to work properly, but that's just speculation. I've put several hours of research into this so far with no luck. Everything in alsamixer is unmuted and looks right. I'm going to dump as much relevant info on my setup below in hopes that someone more knowledgeable than I can spot the issue:

same problem with me on Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series.
actually, internal speakers works, it's just on mute (you can change it with alsamixer), but headphone/external speakers doesn't work. and there's no sound card detected in gnome control center -> audio section.

  • Right, MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(Built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G not working, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III.

My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.

  • DV6-1230us Intell 4 Series Express Chipset Family Driver Update

    Hello,
I am looking for an updated driver I can download for my Intell 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I started having an issue with being able to edit my GoPro videos with GoPro Cinform studio on my laptop. After contacting GoPro and working through several recomendations nothing seemed to fix the issue so they suggested I download the most current driver. However there lies the problem, because the most current driver on the site is from 2009. Is there a more up to date driver I can download and use?
    Please help,
    David

Hi The intel chipset update manager refuses to do the update due to not accepted by the laptop mfgr (hp).
My original trouble is also with GoPro Studio 2, wherein part of the EDIT function screen, the storyboard panel, is missing and cannot be displayed, even with a pre-canned template.
Here is the output from dxdiag: (regret the verbose output)

  • Touchsmart 310 1110 uk. Intel (R) 6 Series chipset problems.

    What are these issues?
Although the site explains it reasonable well it isn't crystal clear, in fact the graphics are terrible, if I didn't know beter i would think that they didn't want me to find out if I have a PC with chipset issues.
Is there a place to go to automatically test and diagnose for the presence of these chipset issies?
I have only recently discovered this and according to their site I have to act within 15 days, I have 2 days left. I think that's a bit naughty anyway. Surely when you register your product they should have automatically informed me that there may be a problem. I do think that a have these problem chips.

  • Intel Sandybridge 6 series chipset recall

I just completed building an Intel I7 2600K system with the MSI-P67A-C43 motherboard.  I just found out today that intel is taking a $700million charge due to problems with the 6 series chipsets designed for use with second generation I5 and I7 sandybridge processors.  The problem is the chipset degrades over time slowing down anything connected to SATA, like your hard drive and DVD.  Will I be receiving a motherboard replacement when available, or should I return the product immediately? I sure hope I receive my chipset replacement out of that $700m rather than suffer performance and reliability loss. How long will it be before we find out what we are suppose to do?
    Thank you

One possible bright side to this is that (is is said by Intel) that the derivative Cougar chipsets are not affected (or have already been fixed).
As this includes the Z67, it may be possible there introduction will be pushed up a bit.
For those who haven't heard, this guy combines the attributes of both the OC P67 and the use of on board video of the H67, plus a few more goodies.
Just another user with a positive outlook.
In the mean time I'm going to attempt a return of my board and wait until the dust settles a bit.  After all, the silicone in the CPU doesn't rust.   (Does it?   )

  • How can I fix Intel 5 series/3400 USB driver installation problem?

I am using Boot Camp to install Windows 7 64 bit on an iMac (mid 2010). After Windows and Apple Windows drivers are installed, I get an error message about the Intel 5 series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Universal Host controller 3B3B failing to install. Reinstalling the driver does not work. I get the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark on the computer icon in the list of devices, indicating there is a problem.
I searched for this problem on the Apple website. I found info about this exact issue with the MacBook Pro, (mid 2010), Windows 7 64 bit and Boot Camp. The article said to ignore it, that this wouldn't be a problem. Would this also not be a problem for my iMac?
    Any comments or suggestions?
    thanks, Kevin

  • Intel 530 series SSD in a Mac Pro - can't warm restart

Has anyone tried an Intel 530 series SSD (I have a 240GB) with their Mac? I just put one into my Mac Pro and installed a fresh copy of 10.8. If I try a "warm" restart it will hang on boot - I get a "circle-slash" and verbose mode shows "still waiting for root device". But if I turn the machine off and cold boot it works fine.
I've tried updating the SSD's firmware and went to 10.8.5 - still doesn't work. I even tried another identical SSD, no luck. Do you think this is a bug in the drive or an incompatibility in the Mac OS? I've posted a similar question on Intel's forum.
    Thanks!

    Hi
Instead of spending more time on these SSD's I returned them and instead bought Samsung 840 Pro's, which works with no problems.
If you want to check what is happening with the firmware for the Intel SSD, you can follow this thread at Intel: https://communities.intel.com/thread/44258?start=0&tstart=0

  • Intel 6 series/C200 Storage controller and AHCI

    Hi All,
I have a T420s with the Intel 6 series/C200 storage controller and an Intel 160Gb SSD.
Its currently configured to use IDE. I've been reading that switching to AHCI will improve the performance.
What i haven't been able to figure out is, does this storage controller support AHCI?

I could not agree more with you Jaco,
Since it is working very well, I should not make any further change. Thanks for your kind note.
I only wanted to have more supporting comments about the referred issue in order to proceed. Particularly from HP.
    Thanks again Jaco....

  • Intel 845E Max Series Chipset Based

    Hi,
i have few questions need to ask.
i'm using Intel 845E Max Series Chipset Based (MS-6566E v1.0 ATX Mainboard)
i want to know is that, is my this mainboard can support the harddisk which have 160gb of capacity?
will it slow down my p4 1.7 speed if not support that high of capacity?
what can i do in order to let this mainboard support it?
what information u need to know to help me solve my problem?
    thanks.

The worst case would be it only recognizes approximately 130 GB of it.  Check mobo manual for hard drive support.  also check for bios updates to add support.  Try partitioning it into 2 drives.  I know that works when OS is the limiting factor.  Not sure if that works when hardware is the limiting factor.  If you have not already bought the drive the safest answer is to buy a 120 GB drive.  The other solution is to purchase a PCI controller card that supports 160 GB drives (sometimes even packaged with the drive if you do not have the drive yet).

  • MSI Z77A-GD65 Intel 7 Series Motherboard Integrated Graphics

Hi i'm a newbie to computer parts and the computer world in general on what does what. I'm only 15 but i'm looking to upgrade my Mobo and CPU I have found a bundle (MSI Z77A-GD65 Intel 7 Series Z77 Motherboard and Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40 GHz Quad Core Unlocked Bundle) on tiger direct and it looks like a good deal. But before I buy it I WAS going to upgrade my GPU before I were to get a new Mobo and CPU. I've done some research on the MSI Z77A-GD65 and I saw it has integrated graphics, but I don't entirely know what that is. I was curious if that's a graphics card and if so what it compares to. I have a Nvidia GTX 9800 graphics card that's fairly old now and I was wondering if a Mobo with integrated graphics acted as a graphics card and if so what it would compare to. If you want to know anymore specs about my computer let me know and i'll be happy to give them out.

It's not the mainboard to have integrated graphics, it's the cpu. The Core i5-3570K has Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated. The mainboard only offers the output connectors to use it. All current generation Intel cpus have integrated graphics which can be used or not. The HD Graphics 4000 is not meant for gaming of course and would perform worse than your GTX9800 in a 3d game. With a supported mainboard (like the Z77A-GD65) the integrated graphics can be used along the discrete vga for Lucid MVP to better performance and gaming experience (see for more details: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=160519.0).

  • Intel HM77 Express/C210 Series Chipset using eSATA port multiplier

I have just purchased a Zotac Nano computer which uses Intel HM77 Express chipset and has an eSATA port. I was surprised to notice my 8-bay hard disk enclosure did not work on this machine. I have read online that the Intel chipset supports eSATA port multipler in hardware but that the Windows drivers do not have it supported. However, some reports are that it should work under Linux.
Does anyone have any idea about getting the on-board eSATA port to work with port multipliers?
    Many thanks,
    Graham

    see the following doc:
Acquiring from GigE Vision Cameras with Vision Acquisition Software - Part I
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5651/en
Compares the Universal to High performance driver,
specifically both provide the same max bandwidth of 125MB but the high performance driver takes advantage of the intel pro1000 chipset to offload some of the CPU load, again this is less important as processors become faster.
    "Advantages
While the high performance driver provides better CPU performance compared to the universal driver, it will only work on Gigabit Ethernet cards with the Intel Pro 1000 chipset. The universal driver can work on any Gigabit Ethernet card recognized by the Operating System. CPU usage during acquisition will affect the CPU cycles available for image analysis. So if your application requires in-line processing, it is better to invest in a Gigabit Ethernet card with the Intel Pro 1000 chipset like the NI PCIe-8231. While your choice of driver affects the CPU usage, it does not limit the maximum bandwidth possible. Either driver will be able to achieve the maximum bandwidth of 125 MB/s."
